Hawaiian Electric denied accusations that it was responsible for prompting the devastating wildfires that wreaked havoc in Maui earlier this month, saying that the power lines had been shut by the company hours before the fire broke out and claimed the lives of at least 115 people.

Hawaiian Electric claimed that its power lines were responsible for the earlier of the two fires that ignited in Lahaina.&nbsp;However, it added that the town was left in shambles by another fire which ignited in the afternoon and could not be contained by the county's fire department.

The claims by Hawaii's electricity company came after Maui County sued it last week over the deadly fire in Lahaina alleging that the destruction could have been avoided if power lines had been shut off. &nbsp;

In a statement, the company's CEO Shelee Kimura said, "We were surprised and disappointed that the County of Maui rushed to court even before completing its own investigation."

Calling the lawsuit filed against it by the county of Maui "factually and legally irresponsible," the utility said that its power lines in West Maui had been shut down for more than six hours prior to the afternoon wildfires that broke out in the area.

"To the extent HECO (Hawaiian Electric Co) has information of a second ignition source, HECO should offer that evidence now. The ultimate responsibility rests with HECO to de-energize, ensure its equipment and systems are properly maintained, and ensure downed power lines are not re-energized," said John Fiske, an attorney representing the county of Maui in the lawsuit.

"Ultimately this will need to be done in court rather than simply via press releases," he added.

"Defendants knew that the high winds the (National Weather Service) predicted would topple power poles, knock down power lines, and ignite vegetation.

"Defendants also knew that if their overhead electrical equipment ignited a fire, it would spread at a critically rapid rate."

Maui County released a statement saying that it was standing strong with the people and communities of Lahaina and Kula.

"Maui County stands alongside the people and communities of Lahaina and Kula to recover public resource damages and rebuild after these devastating utility-caused fires," it said in a statement.&nbsp;

The Express Tribune, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that the PIA management met with caretaker Finance Minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar and sought the financing. However, the airline could not immediately win the bailout package.

According to the news daily reports, the PIA is the country's most heightened public sector loss-making commodity and subsequent governments have been giving out money from the budget to keep it buoyant.

The management of the Pakistan International Airline (PIA) informed the caretaker finance minister in the meeting that there was a financing gap of Rs 23 billion.

However, the finance ministry asked the PIA management to arrange Pak currency Rs 13 billion in funds from the banks against the available space of the annual sovereign guarantees limit.

The government, in the last fiscal year, increased the limit of the sovereign guarantees to over Rs 263 billion for taking more loans to maintain a steady position.

If the PIA fails to service its debt, the banks have the option of cashing these sovereign guarantees.

The rising dissent in loyalist areas that once stood with Assad now pose the biggest challenge to his hold on power after winning a more than decade-long civil war with crucial help from Russia and Iran.

Officials have heightened security in Mediterranean coastal areas, the ancestral homeland of Assad's minority Alawite sect that holds a tight control over the army and security forces, to preempt growing calls to strike and protest about living conditions, said Kenan Waqaf, a prominent journalist who was imprisoned for criticizing the authorities.

Across the province, scores of local branches of the Baath party whose officials hold top government posts were also closed by protesters with its cadres fleeing, residents said.

In a rare act of defiance in areas under Assad's rule, protesters tore down posters of Assad, where the party has promoted a personality cult around him and his late father.

Sweida, a city of over 100,000 people, has seen most public institutions shut and public transport on strike and businesses partially open, residents and civic activists said.

"This is civil disobedience that is unprecedented and draws wide societal support from a large section of the Druze community and its religious leaders," said Ryan Marouf, a civic activist and editor of the local Suwayda 24 news website.

The authorities have kept silent about the widening protests but instructed the security apparatus to stay out of sight and even vacated some checkpoints to avoid friction, officials privately said.

Rapper Eminem has asked Vivek Ramaswamy, Republican Party hopeful for nomination in US Presidential Elections, to stop using his music during the campaign trail, as per a letter disclosed on Monday (28 August).

"BMI has received a communication from Marshall B. Mathers, III, professionally known as Eminem, objecting to the Vivek Ramaswamy campaign's use of Eminem's musical composition (the "Eminem Works") and requesting that BMI remove all Eminem Works from the Agreement," BMI says in the letter.

The 38-year-old candidate, who dubs himself "Trump 2.0," has surprisingly ascended to the third position among Republicans who are in the race for the 2024 presidential primary elections.

As an undergraduate at Harvard, his side gig was to rap libertarian-minded lyrics with the stage name "Da Vek."

"It is extremely regrettable and worrying," Yoshimasa Hayashi said while interacting with the press in Tokyo.

"We would like to urge the Chinese government again to take appropriate measures immediately, such as calling on its citizens to act calmly to prevent the situation from escalating, and to take all possible measures to ensure the safety of Japanese residents and our diplomatic missions in China," he said.

He added that China should "provide accurate information" about the Fukushima water release "rather than unnecessarily raising people's concerns by providing information without any scientific basis".

He also confirmed that a brick was pelted at Japan's embassy in Beijing.

The Japanese embassy in Beijing also released a statement on Tuesday saying that it was "extremely worried" about the harassment by the Chinese nationals over Tokyo's release of Fukushima wastewater.

"Some individuals have come to our (embassy) entrance," they said.

"They took these kinds of actions then were led away by armed police," they explained.

"Harassing calls are answered every day, especially on weekends, beginning last Thursday and Friday, delaying our normal work," they added.

Japan, on Monday (28 August), condemned harassing phone calls it received since the Fukushima wastewater discharge calling the action "extremely regrettable".

While raising concern over these phone calls, Japan's Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Masataka Okano summoned Chinese Ambassador to Japan Wu Jianghao to the Foreign Ministry and strongly denounced the harassment.

Okano told Jianghao that Beijing "should not unnecessarily raise people's concerns with information that is not based on scientific evidence."

He also called on the Chinese government to disseminate accurate information and said that the authorities must ask their citizens to act calmly to prevent the situation from escalating.&nbsp;

A journalist in London lodged a police complaint against former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif's security guard for allegedly engaging in “misconduct” outside Hussain Nawaz’s London office, according to ARY News reports.

As per the details, Nawaz Sharif’s security guard acted aggressively and also abused reporters who had assembled at Hussain Nawaz’s office to report on the meeting scheduled to take place between the Sharif brothers.

The journalist who, according to the reports, claimed that the former Pakistan prime minister's bodyguard used offensive words and profane gestures, expected the police to punish the culprits severely.

The Pakistani media representative had gathered outside Nawaz Sharif’s residence in London&nbsp;to capture Shehbaz’s arrival for a crucial meeting. As per ARY News reports, the journalists were mistreated by the security guard as soon as they started recording Shehbaz’s video when he arrived.

In the footage, the security personnel could be seen shouting abuses and also threatening the journalists for covering the affair. &nbsp;

The media representatives kept telling the guard that they were doing their job but as per the footage, he seemed unconvinced.

The press then asked the former Pak PM to take note of the situation and condemn the security guard’s bad behaviour.

Shehbaz Sharif had travelled to London in order to have a discussion with Nawaz prior to the general elections and to finalise the PML-N Quaid’s return to Pakistan.

PM Modi is set to attend the 15th BRICS Summit at the invitation of the country's president Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, which is being held in Johannesburg from 22-24 August 2023.

This will be the Indian prime minister's third visit to South Africa and will also mark the 30th anniversary of the diplomatic relationship between India and South Africa.

PM Modi in his departure statement said, "I am visiting the Republic of South Africa from 22-24 August 2023 at the invitation of HE Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, to attend the 15th BRICS Summit being held in Johannesburg under the South African Chairmanship."

"During my stay in Johannesburg, I will also participate in BRICS–Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue event that will be held as part of the BRICS Summit activities," he added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will join the BRICS summit virtually while the country's delegation will be led by foreign minister Sergey Lavrov. He is also set to attend a special event with the theme “Brics – Africa outreach and Brics plus dialogue”.

This event is scheduled to take place after the BRICS Summit and will welcome dozens of countries, primarily from the African continent, invited by South Africa.

From South Africa, PM Modi will travel to Athens, Greece on Friday (August 25), at the invitation of the country's prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

China on Tuesday (August 22) expressed grave concern over Japan’s announcement to release wastewater from Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean, saying that it was extremely 'irresponsible' on Tokyo's part to take such a decision.

"The Government of Japan has defied the serious concerns and resolute opposition of the international community. It has insisted on announcing that the discharge of contaminated water from Fukushima will start on August 24. It is blatantly transferring the risk of nuclear contamination to the whole world and putting its own selfish interests above the long-term well-being of all humankind,"&nbsp;China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said.

"This is extremely selfish and irresponsible. China is gravely concerned about and strongly opposes it, and has made solemn representations to the Japanese side."

Wang added that Japan should "rectify its wrongful decision" and dispose of nuclear-contaminated water in a responsible manner.

"China strongly urges the Japanese side to rectify its wrongful decision and withdraw its plan to discharge nuclear-contaminated water into the sea. It should communicate in good faith with its neighbours in a sincere manner.

"Dispose of the nuclear-contaminated water in a responsible manner and accept strict international supervision. China will take all necessary measures to safeguard the marine environment, food safety and public health," he said at a press briefing.

An IndiGo flight, which departed from Mumbai for Ranchi, made an unscheduled landing at Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur on Monday evening (August 21) after a senior citizen passenger reportedly suffered a fatal medical emergency.

The 62-year-old male passenger, identified as D Tiwari, vomited blood aboard the flight.

He was offloaded from the aircraft post-landing and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for further medical assistance, the officials said. However, the passenger did not survive.

Tiwari was suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease and tuberculosis, news agency PTI reported citing Aejaz Shami, DGM, Branding and Communications of KIMS Hospital in Nagpur.

Shami said that the passenger was brought dead to the hospital.

Passenger on board IndiGo flight vomits blood mid-air, dies

National Science Foundation (NSF) telescopes are being targeted by mysterious cyber attacks, as per a new report by Science.org. Since the beginning of August, a major “cyber incident" has disrupted the NSF centre which coordinates international astronomy efforts. The attacks have knocked out telescopes in Hawaii and Chile, further halting operations, and preventing the scientists from conducting research, the report said.

The apparent cyberattack was detected by NOIRLab, a coordinating centre run by NSF for ground-based astronomy.

“Quick reactions by the NOIRLab cyber security team and observing teams prevented damage to the observatory,” the centre said in a press release.

The first telescope to be affected was the Gemini North telescope in Hilo, Hawaii, which is operated by the International Gemini Observatory.

NOIRLab’s cybersecurity team and observing teams retracted quickly, which helped prevent physical damage to the observatory, but the attack forced operations at the Gemini North and Gemini South, located on Cerro Pachón mountain in Chile, to completely shut down.

As per the reports, the forced closure due to the incident impacted research as scientists missed out on significant observation windows, affecting international projects.

“We’re all in this together,” Science.org quoted Gautham Narayan, an astronomer at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign whose team is trying to save its chance to observe new supernovas using one of the affected Chilean telescopes, as saying.&nbsp;

The astronomy community has a “grim determination to press on, despite the trying circumstances,” he added.

On August 9, NOIRLab's computer systems, which usually permit astronomers to operate ground-based telescopes remotely, disconnected its computer network from the Mid-Scale Observatories (MSO) network on Cerro Tololo and Cerro Pachon, making the remote observations impossible at the Víctor M. Blanco 4-meter and SOAR telescopes.&nbsp;

According to the reports, the closure impacted eight other affiliated telescopes in Chile.

The NOIRLab team is making efforts to help find out temporary solutions in the absence of remote observing capabilities.
