The leaders and organisations representing the South Asian community in Seattle met Mayor Bruce Harrell, Police Chief Adrian Diaz and other city leaders on Saturday.

“Effective public safety is built on trust between City government and the communities we serve. When that trust is breached, it is the City's obligation to do the work necessary to restore and rebuild it,” Mayor Harrell was quoted as saying by Komo TV.

Harrell further said "We want to express our extreme condolences for your loss. Many comments that have been made do not reflect the sympathy and the empathy and the condolences that we have."&nbsp;

"I'm standing with our Chief of Police, Adrian Diaz and again with the Indian...The who's who in the Indian community in the greater region, are all coming together because of unfortunate and insensitive remarks that we believe were made. Making sure that our apologies as a city official are felt to your community and your family."&nbsp;

More than 100 members of the Seattle area's South Asian community also gathered at Denny Park on Saturday where they held signs saying, “Jaahnavi had more value than Seattle Police Department” and “Justice for Jaahnavi, jail killer cops”.&nbsp;

“The South Asian community and I grieve for Jaahnavi and are in shock over the lack of empathy and deeply offensive remarks regarding a young woman's life and potential,” news agency PTI quoted State Representative Vandana Slatter as saying.

“Jaahnavi is a part of our community, and her story is reflected in every one of us. It is time for swift and accountable action, not apathy so that Jaahnavi's family can have justice and the community can begin the long journey to rebuilding trust,” she said.

“We're not a monolith, the Indian community,” Slatter said to the crowd.

“There's diaspora in the community, but we are all united today,” she said.

The 23-year-old student was hit by an overspeeding police vehicle earlier in January this year. The police car was cruising at a speed of 120 mph

A video released by the Seattle Police Department on Monday (September 11) showed a police officer laughing and making insensitive comments about the accident.

In the video, which has now gone viral on social media, Seattle Police Officers' Guild Vice President Daniel Auderer can be heard saying, "She is dead" before bursting out into laughter and referring to Kandula as "a regular person".

Towards the end, the officer says, "She was 26 anyway, she had limited value"

South Asian community members demand justice for Jaahnavi Kandula, meet Seattle mayor

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Sunday (September 17), launched the Rs 13,000-crore PM Vishwakarma Yojana (scheme), aimed at benefitting traditional artisans and craftsmen.

PM Modi made the announcement and inaugurated the Rs 5,400-crore first phase of the state-of-the-art India International Convention and Expo Centre (IICC), named 'Yashobhoomi', at Dwarka in New Delhi on his birthday.

The Indian prime minister, during his address, said that the artisans will be given proper training and during that period, they will also be given a stipend of Rs 500 per day.

“The friends who have been at the root of India's prosperity for thousands of years are our Vishwakarma,” he told artisans.

“With the blessings of Lord Vishwakarma, 'Pradhanmantri Vishwakarma Yojana' is being started today. PM Vishwakarma Yojana comes as a new ray of hope for millions of families working traditionally with hand skills and tools,” the Prime Minister said.

He then urged the artisans to purchase Made in India toolkits from only those shops which are GST-registered.

The PM Vishwakarma scheme is fully funded by the Union Government with an outlay of Rs 13,000 crore where the artisans will be provided recognition through PM Vishwakarma certificate and ID card, skill upgradation involving basic and advanced training, toolkit incentive of Rs 15,000, collateral-free credit support up to Rs 1 lakh (first tranche) and Rs 2 lakh (second tranche) at a concessional interest rate of 5 per cent, incentive for digital transactions and marketing support.

Under this scheme, the government will cover 18 traditional crafts which include Carpenter; Boat Maker; Armourer; Blacksmith; Hammer and Tool Kit Maker; Locksmith; Goldsmith; Potter; Sculptor, Stone breaker; Cobbler (Shoesmith/ Footwear artisan); Mason Basket/Mat/Broom Maker/Coir Weaver; Doll &amp; Toy Maker (Traditional); Barber; Garland maker; Washerman; Tailor; and Fishing Net Maker.&nbsp;

Earlier in the day, PM Modi inaugurated the extension of the Delhi Airport Metro Express line from Dwarka Sector 21 to a new metro station ‘YashoBhoomi Dwarka Sector 25’. He also took a ride on the Delhi Metro.&nbsp;

Mahsa Amini's father was briefly detained by security forces in Iran on Saturday (September 16) and was released after being warned against marking the anniversary of Amini's death, said a human rights group.

"Security forces detained Amjad Amini today and returned him to his house after threatening him against marking his daughter's death anniversary," the Kurdistan Human Rights network said.

State-affiliated media reported arrests of several "counter-revolutionaries" and "terrorists" in different Iranian cities and stated that security forces had thwarted plots to create disruptions around illegal protests.

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, died in the custody of the country's morality police on September 16, 2023, for allegedly violating the strict dress code for women in place since the 1979 revolution.

Her family contends she died from a head injury in police custody.

Earlier this week, Amjad Amini, Mahsa's father, had released a statement announcing plans to hold a commemoration for his daughter in their hometown of Saqez in western Iran.&nbsp;

One of Amini's uncles, Safa Aeli, was also detained in Saqez.

As per human rights groups, on Saturday (September 16), the first death anniversary of Amini, a massive security force presence was deployed in Iran's mostly Kurdish areas in anticipation of unrest.

According to news agency Reuters, footage on social media showed apparent protests in areas including Gohardasht, a neighbourhood of the city of Karaj west of the capital Tehran, and in the northeastern city of Mashhad.

Widespread strikes were reported in multiple cities in Iran's Kurdistan region.

However, IRNA said Amini's hometown of Saqez was "completely quiet" and that calls for strike in Kurdish areas had failed due to "people's vigilance and the presence of security and military forces".

It quoted an official in the Kurdistan province as saying: "A number of agents affiliated with counter-revolutionary groups who had planned to create chaos and prepare media fodder were arrested in the early hours of this morning."

<h2>Biden hails protesters</h2>

US President Joe Biden, on Friday (September 15), said that the United States would remain committed to supporting Iranians, a year after Mahsa Amini's death triggered massive demonstrations, as Washington revealed fresh sanctions against "egregious" rights abusers.

Biden released a statement saying, "Today—as we remember Mahsa’s tragic death—we reaffirm our commitment to the courageous people of Iran who are carrying on her mission. They are inspiring the world with their resilience and resolve. And together with our allies and partners, we stand with them."

"Iranians alone will determine the fate of their country, but, the United States remains committed to standing with them, including providing tools to support Iranians' ability to advocate for their own future," he added.

The British government has announced that a proposed hike in visa fees will become effective from October 4, when a visit visa for under six months will cost GBP 15 more and student visas will be GBP 127 more expensive for travellers from around the world, including Indians.

Following the legislation tabled in Parliament on Friday, the UK Home Office said the changes mean that the cost for a visit visa for less than six months will rise to GBP 115 and the fee for applying for a student visa from outside the UK will rise to GBP 490 – to equal the amount charged for in-country applications.

The hike comes after British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had announced in July that the fees and health surcharge paid towards the UK's state-funded National Health Service (NHS) by visa applicants are set to rise “significantly” to meet the country's public sector wage increase.

“We are going to increase the charges that we have for migrants who are coming to this country when they apply for visas and indeed something called the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which is the levy that they pay to access the NHS,” he said at the time.

“All of those fees are going to go up and that will raise over GBP 1 billion, so across the board visa application fees are going to go up significantly and similarly for the IHS,” he said. The Home Office indicated a 15 per cent increase in the cost of most work and visit visas, and an increase of at least 20 per cent in the cost of priority visas, study visas and certificates of sponsorship.

“Income from fees charged plays a vital role in the Home Office's ability to run a sustainable immigration and nationality system. Careful consideration is given when setting fees to help reduce the funding contribution from British taxpayers, whilst continuing to provide a service that remains attractive to those wishing to work in the UK and support broader prosperity for all,” the Home Office said this week.

The hike in fees applies across most visa categories, including health and care visa; applications to register and naturalise as a British citizen; fees for up to six months, two, five and 10-year visit visas.

The hike also applies for the majority of fees for entry clearance and certain applications for leave to remain in the UK, including those for work and study; fees for indefinite leave to enter and indefinite leave to remain; and fees in relation to certificates of sponsorship and confirmation of acceptance for studies.

The changes are subject to parliamentary approval and are expected to be in force from October 4, the Home Office said.

UK visa fee hike for visitors and students to be effective from October 4

Two cosmonauts from Russia and an American astronaut, on Friday (September 15), rocketed toward the International Space Station, marking the first time Moscow launched astronauts to an orbiting outpost in almost a year.

The launch also came amid heightened tensions between the United States and Russia over the Ukraine war.

Soyuz MS-24 spacecraft lifted off from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, at 11:44 am ET, with Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub and NASA astronaut Loral O'Hara on board.

As per reports, the crew was expected to dock at the ISS three hours later.

Kononenko, while hinting at the tensions between Washington and Moscow during a pre-flight press conference that took place on Thursday (September 14), said that "unlike on earth" cosmonauts and astronauts took care of each other in space.

"We hear each other there, and we understand each other, and we are very sensitive to our relationships," he said. "We always take care of each other."

O'Hara applauded the station's "legacy" and said it had been bringing the countries together.

"I'm excited to get on board and see the crewmates who are waiting for us," she added.

Kononenko, 59, and Chub, 39, are scheduled to spend a year on the ISS, while O'Hara, 40, is to spend six months aboard. It was the first mission to space for both O'Hara and Chub.

The liftoff took place after Russia's first lunar mission in nearly 50 years failed last month.

Russia's Luna-25 probe crashed into the Moon after it spun into an uncontrolled orbit. Roscosmos said that there had been an "abnormal situation" during a manoeuvre earlier.

Preliminary investigations showed that the lander "has ceased to exist following a collision with the Moon's surface". The scientists at the agency then started a probe to determine the cause of the crash. &nbsp;

"During the operation, an emergency situation occurred on board the automatic station, which did not allow the manoeuvre to be performed with the specified parameters," &nbsp;Roscosmos wrote in an update on Telegram.

Rocket with two Russian cosmonauts, NASA astronaut launches toward International Space Station

An Irish tourist, on holiday in Belgium, was captured climbing a historic statue outside the Brussels stock exchange, causing a portion of it to break off. This is the latest in a spate of bad tourist behaviour incidents.&nbsp;

The incident, which was first reported by local newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, took place on Sunday (September 10).

The man was allegedly drunk and wanted to have his photo clicked while sitting on the back of the statue that comprises a lion and a figure of a man with a torch in hand, as per local media reports.

The video of the incident, which has been doing rounds on social media, shows the man climbing on the statue, but when he tries to get down, he somehow loses his balance and holds on to the torch, causing it to break off.

He was later arrested at a fast-food restaurant that was located near the statue, according to Het Nieuwsblad.

"The police arrived at the scene and found the tourist a bit further away. He was temporarily held in police custody and will face criminal charges," Insider quoted Brussels police as saying.

The incident took place just a day after the statue was opened to the public after a three-year restoration project that cost 17,600 euros, or around $18,750.

The Brussels Stock Exchange in a statement said that it expects the tourist to pay for the restoration of the statue that he broke.

"On Sunday evening, an Irish tourist in a merry mood wanted to climb onto the lion in front of the Brussels Stock Exchange building," project manager Nel Vandevennet of the renovated stock exchange building told VRT. In the process, the man broke off a newly restored sculpture 'The hand with a torch'."

"The repairs are going to cost a lot of money because the work will have to be done by real craftsmen. It is listed heritage and there will be follow-up from the monuments and landscapes agency of the Brussels region."

"We would like to carry out the repairs quickly, but it will surely take a few weeks or even months. The whole building has only just been restored to its former glory, including the two lions which were in a bad way. We thought the sculptures would enjoy greater respect. We just think it’s very sad this happened."

In another bizarre incident, a tourist, who was later identified as Ivan Dimitrov (27) from England, was seen carving his and his fiancee's names on the walls of the Colosseum using a key.

Dimitrov said that he was unaware of the antiquity of the ancient monument and then handed a letter of apology to Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri.

The Madras High Court issued consequential remarks over the Sanatana Dharma controversy. The court underscored that Sanatana Dharma is a set of 'eternal duties' which can be gathered from multiple sources relating to Hinduism or the ones practising the Hindu way of life and includes “the duty to the nation, duty to the King, King's duty to his people, duty to one's parents and Gurus, care for the poor, and whole lot of other duties”.

In his order on Friday (September 15), Justice N. Seshasayee said that the court is aware of “the very vociferous, and at times noisy debates on pro- and anti-Sanatana Dharma” and the court could not help considering the genuine concern for what is going around.

It further asserted that when free speech is exerted in matters pertaining to religion, it is extremely important for one to make sure that no one is hurt and “free speech cannot be hate speech”.

“Somewhere, an idea appears to have gained ground that Sanatana Dharma is all about, and only about, promoting casteism and untouchability. Untouchability in a country of equal citizens, cannot be tolerated, and even if it is seen as permitted somewhere within the principles of 'Sanatana Dharma', it still cannot have a space to stay, since Article 17 of the Constitution has declared that untouchability has been abolished. It is part of the fundamental right,” the court said.

The remarks by the court were made in the wake of recent comments made by DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin that triggered a massive backlash.

The son of the Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin had sparked a row earlier this month by saying that Sanatan Dharma is against social justice and that it must be "eradicated".

He then compared it with diseases like dengue and malaria, inviting sharp criticism.

"Few things cannot be opposed; they should only be abolished. We can't oppose dengue, mosquitoes, malaria, or coronavirus, we have to eradicate them. In the same way, we have to eradicate Sanatana (Sanatan Dharma). Rather than merely opposing Sanatana, it should be eradicated," Stalin had said.
