Khalistani terror organisation leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, whose death has sparked a row between India and Canada, was granted Canadian citizenship months after a Red Corner Notice (RCN) was issued against him.

It is pertinent to note that after an RCN is issued by Interpol, a country is bound to arrest and deport the accused back to his/her homeland. However, Canada did not do so in Nijjar's case.&nbsp;

As per reports, during talks with Canada, the Indian government had raised concerns over Nijjar's citizenship being approved by the authorities, months after the very first Red Corner Notice was issued against him on November 14, 2014. &nbsp;

The first RCN was issued after a case (FIR No. 159) was registered against Nijjar at the Kotwali police station, Patiala, by the Punjab Police. The second RCN was issued in FIR No. 19 lodged at the Nurpur police station, Ropar, in 2016, reported The Tribune.

Meanwhile, Canada’s Immigration Minister Marc Miller took to social media platform X, on Tuesday (September 19), and shared a post saying Nijjar was granted citizenship on March 3, 2015. Later he stated that the Khalistani terrorist became a Canadian citizen on May 25, 2007.

"Mr. Nijjar became a Canadian citizen on May 25, 2007, earlier than I stated below. The error in dates is my responsibility to assume. Again, nothing justifies the killing of Mr. Nijjar," he wrote on X responding to his earlier post which said, "I can confirm that Hardeep Singh Nijjar became a Canadian citizen on March 3, 2015. I hope this dispels the baseless rumours that he was not a Canadian."

Canada granted citizenship to Nijjar despite Red-Corner Notice issued against him: Report

The Indian foreign ministry, on Thursday (September 21), asked Canada to cut down on its diplomatic presence in the country.

This statement by External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi came in the midst of strained diplomatic ties between the two countries after Ottawa accused New Delhi of killing a Khalistani separatist on Canadian soil.

Bagchi, during a presser, said that the size of Canadian diplomatic staff in India is larger than that of New Delhi in Canada, further adding that there should be a parity in strength and rank equivalency in the joint presence.

"We have informed the Canadian government that there should be parity in strength and rank equivalence in our mutual diplomatic presence. Their numbers here are very much higher than ours in Canada. The details of this are being worked out," he said at a media briefing.

"I assume that there will be a reduction from the Canadian side," he added.

<h2>We'll certainly provide security to all foreign diplomats, says Bagchi</h2>

Amid reports of threats to Canadian diplomats in India, Bagchi said that New Delhi will be certainly providing all security to foreign diplomats in India, and hoped that Canadian authorities would show similar sensitivity to Indian diplomats.&nbsp;

The Canadian High Commission on Thursday claimed that some of its diplomats have been receiving threats on social media in the wake of the diplomatic row between New Delhi and Ottawa, and added that it is “temporarily adjusting staff presence in India”.

"Our High Commission and all consulates in India are open and operational and continue to serve clients. In light of the current environment where tensions have heightened, we are taking action to ensure the safety of our diplomats. With some diplomats having received threats on various social media platforms, Global Affairs Canada is assessing its staff complement in India,” the High Commission of Canada in India said.

The Canadian mission had urged the Indian government to provide security to its diplomats.

Dozens of protesters took to the streets in Canada to stage a demonstration targeting gender and sexual education in schools across the country.

Thousands of parents and conservative groups gathered around the Greater Toronto area on Wednesday (September 20). The initial demonstrations were categorised under the pennant of the "1 Million March for Children", as per Canada-based outlet CBC News.

As per the group's website, the reason behind organising the protest was to "protect our children from indoctrination and sexualisation."&nbsp;

A 47-year-old woman from Toronto was also arrested by the police over allegedly carrying a weapon to the demonstration. She, according to CBS reports, was charged with one count of possessing a weapon and one count of carrying a weapon while attending a public gathering, said Toronto police.

While speaking to CBC News, one of the protesters, Jane Agosta said that she took part in the demonstration to support her child who was currently in the transitioning phase. She said that she wanted to speak up against the "inflammatory messaging" of the provincial government.

"We spend a lot of time just keeping children safe and loved and accepting of themselves - and to insinuate that we might actually be spending time indoctrinating them is absolutely ridiculous. We just want our children to be safe, loved and cared for," she said.

Counter-protests were also organised in the country with groups meeting at places like Queen's Park

"I grew up in a household where I wasn't able to be myself until my 30s and it is really important that all children know that there are people that love them and support them."

In separate statements, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), Peel District School Board (PDSB), Durham District School Board (DDSB) and Halton District School Board (HDSB), said that they all supported the LGBTQ community before the demonstrations.

"We support everyone's human rights and expression of gender," the TDSB statement said, according to CBC News.

"Harassment, discrimination and hate have no place in TDSB. In our schools, we do not tell students who they should be, but welcome them as they are."

United States President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on Wednesday (September 20), vowed to together make efforts towards forging a historic peace deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

“I think that under your leadership, Mr. President, we can forge a historic peace between Israel and Saudi Arabia,” Netanyahu said, adding that “Such a peace would go a long way first to advance the end of the Arab-Israeli conflict, achieve reconciliation between the Islamic world and the Jewish state and advance a genuine peace between Israel and the Palestinians.”

Netanyahu said they could work together to make history.

Meeting for the very first time since the Israeli leader returned to power in December last year, both the leaders showed a desire to normalise the relations between the countries. However, Biden also emphasised that he was determined to discuss their differences.

“Together,” Biden reiterated, hinting at his commitment towards normalising the strained diplomatic ties, which he said would have been unthinkable years ago.

The two leaders held talks on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York after Biden withheld an invitation to the White House.

Netanyahu further appreciated Biden for his commitment towards preventing Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability.

Desperate to keep Varroa out of the country, authorities have destroyed more than 14,000 infected beehives since the tiny red-brown pest was first detected north of Sydney in June 2022.

The government on Wednesday conceded its US$64 million eradication plan could not stop the mite from spreading, saying the country's beekeepers should now prepare to live with the incursion.

"The recent spike in new detections have made it clear that the Varroa mite infestation is more widespread and has also been present for longer than first thought," officials said in a statement.

Australia was one of the last major beekeeping countries to successfully keep Varroa at bay.

Smaller than a peppercorn, Varroa mites attach themselves to honeybees and slowly feast on their body tissue from the outside -- eventually spreading through hives and causing colony collapse.

They are the "most serious pest of honeybees worldwide", according to the Australian government.

Australian National University ecologist Saul Cunningham said the Varroa infestation would also damage agricultural industries reliant on pollination.

"Varroa mite will cause significant economic damage in agriculture, and so it is vital that we focus on adaptation to life with Varroa," Cunningham said.

Australia's native honeybees have proven resilient to Varroa mites but do not currently play a major role in honey production or agricultural pollination.

University of Sunshine Coast researcher Volker Herzig said the "final nail in the coffin" was a government decision that allowed beekeepers to transport their hives across state boundaries to help with pollination.

Every year, some 270,000 beehives are trucked into the state of Victoria to pollinate almond orchards -- an annual pilgrimage billed as the "largest movement of livestock" in Australia.

Herzig said Australia must "now find permanent solutions for managing our beehives", which "most other countries around the world" have been doing for years.

The government's decision was "quite a shock", said native bee researcher James Dorey of Flinders University.

"The impacts of this decision will be felt for decades to come in how beekeepers manage their hives and how farmers pollinate their crops," he said.

"In particular, farmers may not be able to rely on passive pollination from feral honeybees any longer."

India's Supreme Court (SC), on Thursday (September 21), refused to intervene in the dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over the release of Cauvery River water for irrigation purposes.

The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) in its September 12 order, which was upheld by CWMA, directed Karnataka to release 5,000 cusecs (cubic foot per second) of water every day for the next 15 days to Tamil Nadu.

A bench of Justices BR Gavai, PS Narasimha and Prashant Kumar Mishra, while declining to meddle, said that both CWMA and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) are conducting meetings regularly and also observing the water requirements every 15 days.&nbsp;

The bench further highlighted that both CWMA and CWRC, have experts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), who have weighed in on all the pertinent aspects like drought, deficit rainfall, and water level in the river and only then passed the order.

"We are therefore of the considered view that the factors which have been taken into consideration by both the authorities cannot be said to be irrelevant or extraneous. In that view, we are not inclined to interfere with the orders," the bench said.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who appeared for Tamil Nadu, submitted that both the authorities despite having acknowledged there was scanty rainfall since August and the state was eligible for 7,200 cusecs of water, reduced the volume to 5,000 cusecs a day.

He then added that Tamil Nadu has over five lakh acres of standing crop and on top of it is facing a drinking water issue for which more water is required in the Indian state.

"If the drought-like condition was taken into account and the authority calculated it to be 7,200 cusecs per day, then there was no occasion to further bring it down to 5,000 cusecs per day," he submitted.

On the other hand, senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for Karnataka, said that the state was also facing drought-like conditions, and the release of 5,000 cusecs of water ordered by the authorities is against the "interest".&nbsp;

"We are facing a drinking water crisis, especially in urban areas including in Bengaluru," he said.

"They have taken into account IMD data, rainfall, water level in reservoirs and other relevant data after which they have arrived at the figure of 5,000 cusecs," Bhati said.

He also alleged that the Khalistan movement chief in the country was trying to “provoke” the Hindu Canadians to react and “divide the Hindu and Sikh communities” in Canada.

Further stating that the majority of Canadian Sikhs do not back the Khalistan movement, Arya said, “Let me be clear. The vast majority of our Canadian Sikh brothers and sisters do not support the Khalistan movement. Most Sikh Canadians may not publicly condemn the Khalistan movement for several reasons but they are deeply connected to the Hindu-Canadian community. Canadian Hindus and Sikhs are connected through family relationships and shared social and cultural ties.”

There would be an outrage in Canada if a white supremacist attacked any group of racialized Canadians asking them to get out of our country. But apparently, this Khalistani leader can get away with this hate crime.”&nbsp;

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the expansion of protected status for Venezuelans was warranted due to "Venezuela's increased instability and lack of safety."

Frosty diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Venezuela make it difficult for the U.S. to deport Venezuelans to their home country. But a U.S. agreement with Mexico has allowed thousands of non-Mexicans — including Venezuelans — to be deported to Mexico in recent months.

Venezuela's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The number of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally dropped in May after the Biden administration rolled out stricter asylum rules, but crossings have rebounded in recent months.

To help free up Border Patrol agents, the Pentagon will send 800 additional active-duty troops to the border on top of 2,500 National Guard troops already deployed, the White House said.

In addition, the Biden administration will expand nationwide a programme launched in May to rapidly process migrant families seeking asylum and potentially deport them.

DHS said it would increase the time that work permits are valid for certain immigrants, including asylum-seekers, to five years, to allow the government to focus on processing new applications.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, on Wednesday (September 20), said that Britain will soften the policies that were aimed at achieving net zero carbon emissions by the year 2050 and will instead follow a "pragmatic" approach to reach the set target.

''I'm confident that we can adopt a more pragmatic, proportionate and realistic approach to meeting net zero that eases the burdens on working people. And that's the second part of our new approach. Now, I'm not saying there will be no hard choices and nor am I abandoning any of our targets and commitments. I am unequivocal that we will meet our international agreements, including the critical promises in Paris and Glasgow, to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees," Sunak said during a press conference.

He further announced that a ban on petrol and diesel cars would be pushed from 2030 to 2035.

"I'm announcing today that we're going to ease the transition to electric vehicles. You'll still be able to buy petrol and diesel cars and vans until 2035. Even after that, you'll still be able to buy and sell them second-hand. We're aligning our approach with countries like Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Australia, Canada, Sweden and the US States such as California, New York and Massachusetts," he said.

"If we continue down this path, we risk losing the British people and the resulting backlash would not just be against specific policies, but against the wider mission itself," the UK PM told a press conference.

He further announced an ease in the speed of transition to heat pumps from gas boilers in homes claiming that he wouldn't compell any household to improve their insulation.

Sunak then emphasised&nbsp;the fact that "no one can doubt" the reality of climate change and said that he believes in net zero and the UK's ability to achieve the net zero target.

He however added that "too often motivated by short-term thinking, politicians have taken the easy way out, telling people the bits they want to hear, and not necessarily always the bits they need to hear."

"We haven't had an honest conversation about these issues in a long time. It's not enough to just announce these targets -- great headlines in the short term -- to will this thing to happen. That's not right," he said.

The UK had the freedom to ease targets as it had achieved "the fastest reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the G7", he asserted.

In a shocking development amidst strained diplomatic ties between India and Canada, a link between the Khalistan movement and Pakistan has come to the fore.&nbsp;

As per sources, it has been found that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has been providing funds&nbsp;to intensify Khalistani activities in Canada.

The report citing sources said that in the recent months, funds were given to some top Khalistani leaders in order to accelerate anti-India activities.&nbsp;

The funding, according to the report, has been utilised to take people to the protest site, make posters and banners, and also to instigate youth against India.&nbsp;

The report came amid both India and Canada issued travel advisories cautioning their respective nationals against travelling to the countries.

“In view of growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence in Canada, all Indian nationals there and those contemplating travel are urged to exercise utmost caution,” the travel advisory issued by India reads.

A similar advisory was issued by Ottawa earlier on Wednesday, in which the Canadian government asked its citizens to ‘exercise a high degree of caution’ while travelling to India.

In its travel advisory, the Canadian government said, “Avoid all travel to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir due to the unpredictable security situation."

"There is a threat of terrorism, militancy, civil unrest, and kidnapping. This advisory excludes travelling to or within the Union Territory of Ladakh. Avoid gatherings and demonstrations," the Canadian government said.

A diplomatic standoff erupted between India and Canada after PM Trudeau suggested in his address to the House of Commons that India might be linked to the death of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. Ottawa also expelled a senior Indian diplomat even as the investigation continues.

However, India has strongly rejected these claims, while reiterating its adherence to the rule of law. New Delhi has also called on Ottawa to check the rampant anti-India activities on Canadian soil and respect the territorial integrity of India.

Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence funding Khalistan activities in Canada: Report

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), on Wednesday (September 20), revealed details of 43 people associated with a terror-gangster network having links to Canada, amid strained diplomatic ties between the two countries.

The NIA, taking to its official X handle, also asked people to share information about properties, assets or businesses owned by these individuals which can be further taken over by the central government.

It has also asked to share details of their business partners, workers, employees, and collection agents.

In its post, the NIA issued pictures of Lawrence Bishnoi, Jasdeep Singh, Kala Jatheri alias Sandeep, Virender Pratap alias Kala Rana and Joginder Singh.

"Persons shown in photos below are accused in the NIA Cases RC-38/2022/NIA/DLI or RC-39/2022/NIA/DLI. If any of you has any information about properties/assets/ business owned by them in their name or in the name of their associates, friends &amp; relatives, please WhatsApp DM @ +91 7290009373," the NIA said on X.
