Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited United States President Joe Biden to be the chief guest at the January 26 Republic Day celebrations in the national capital Delhi, revealed the Ambassador of the US to India, Eric Garcetti on Wednesday (September 20).

Garcetti said that PM Modi extended the invitation to Biden on the sidelines of the bilateral that took place between the two leaders at the recently concluded G20 Summit.

Also during their talks, the two leaders settled the seventh and last outstanding World Trade Organisation (WTO) dispute.&nbsp;

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed United States President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., to India today, reaffirming the close and enduring partnership between India and the United States. The leaders expressed their appreciation for the substantial progress underway to implement the ground breaking achievements of Prime Minister Modi’s historic, June 2023, visit to Washington,” the India-US joint statement read.

PM Modi and Biden also reaffirmed the importance of the Quad in supporting a free, open, inclusive, and resilient Indo-Pacific.&nbsp;

The official joint statement said that both leaders called on their administrations to continue the work of transforming the India-US Strategic Partnership across all dimensions of our multifaceted global agenda, which is based on trust and mutual understanding.&nbsp;

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to "deepen and diversify the India-US major defence partnership through expanded cooperation in new and emerging domains such as space and AI, and accelerated defence industrial collaboration".&nbsp;

The first C-295 medium tactical transport aircraft landed in Vadodara on Wednesday, days after it was handed over to the Indian Air Force (IAF) in the southern Spanish city of Seville.

The aircraft, which was flown by Group Captain PS Negi, would be formally inducted into the IAF at a ceremony that will be held in Hindon near Delhi on September 25.

The plane took off from Spain on September 15 from Seville and made three stopovers in Malta, Egypt and Bahrain before landing in Vadodara.

“The IAF’s first C-295 MW aircraft landed in Vadodara today. The aircraft would be handed over to the #IAF in a formal ceremony on 25 Sep 23 at AF Stn Hindon by the Honourable Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh,” the IAF shared a post on X.

After receiving the delivery of the aircraft, IAF Chief Chaudhari termed it a major milestone for India and said that the induction of the aircraft would improve IAF’s tactical airlift capabilities.

“For Atmanirbhar Bharat, after the first 16 aircraft roll out from this plant, the 17th aircraft onwards will be made in India. It's a big step for the Indian aviation industry where we will be manufacturing the first military transport aircraft in the country," he added.

On September 13, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari received India’s first C-295 transport aircraft, two years after India finalised a Rs 21,935-crore deal with Airbus Defence and Space to procure the jets to replace its ageing Avro–748 fleet.

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi over the weekend, officials said Sunday, in the latest effort to ease tensions between the superpowers.

Sullivan and Wang met in the Mediterranean island nation of Malta on Saturday and Sunday, the White House said.

"This meeting was part of ongoing efforts to maintain open lines of communication and responsibly manage the relationship," a statement said.

President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping have not talked or met since a summit in Bali last year but US officials say they are working to renew contact between the two leaders.

A string of high-level US officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, have met recently with Chinese officials to prepare a possible Xi-Biden meeting.

The White House said Sullivan and Wang "committed to maintain this strategic channel of communication and to pursue additional high-level engagement."

A Chinese government statement on the Malta meeting largely echoed the US version, saying "the two sides conducted candid, substantive and constructive strategic communication."

Wang brought up the issue of Taiwan -- a self-governing, democratic island that China claims but which also receives strong US support -- as a "red line that cannot be crossed in Sino-US relations."

"The United States noted the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," according to the White House readout.

Biden's national security advisor Jake Sullivan meets Chinese FM Wang Yi

Awami Muslim League (AML) chief and PTI ally Sheikh Rashid was arrested on Sunday evening (September 17), from his residence in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, said his lawyer Sardar Abdul Razzak Khan, as per Pakistani outlet Dawn.

“Men clad in plain clothes arrested Sheikh Rashid from his residence,” Khan said.

He stated that Rashid was moved to an “undisclosed location”.

Khan further stated that along with Rashid, his nephew Sheikh Shakir and houseworker Sheikh Imran were also arrested.

The former interior minister's nephew, Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, released a video message in which he claimed that his uncle was arrested from Bahria Town Phase III in Rawalpindi and that his present location was still not known.

As Russia's war on Ukraine continues for a second year, the global leaders are set to meet at the United Nations on Monday (September 18), where the West will continue to push its agenda to seek the support of developing nations over the conflict.

With the main focus on Russian aggression in Ukraine, this year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is expected to attend the annual gathering in New York for the very first time since the conflict broke out.

Also this year, concerns of the Global South will be high on the agenda, in part a reflection of the increased attention put on the developing world by Western nations to secure its backing for the effort to isolate Russia.

Several top-level meetings, that will be transpiring during the General Assembly, will mostly focus on priorities of developing countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia: climate, health, financing for development, and how to get the Sustainable Development Goals - a global "to-do" list created in 2015 - on track.

"This is a year when the countries of the Global South have set the agenda," said Richard Gowan, UN&nbsp;director of the International Crisis Group think tank.

"Non-western countries have played this moment quite effectively," he said. "I think they have taken advantage of the fact that they know that the US, on one hand, and then Russia on the other, want their support."

<h2>Zelensky expected to address General Assembly&nbsp;</h2>

The Ukrainian President is expected to address the General Assembly on Tuesday (September 19) and speak at a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine on Wednesday. This could also place him next to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Western diplomats are inclined to demonstrate that their efforts to target Russia over its aggression in Ukraine diplomatically&nbsp;do not mean they cannot highlight other crises and issues of significance to the rest of the world.

"It's not a case of either/or. We need to do both," said British UN&nbsp;Ambassador Barbara Woodward, describing Russia's invasion as "an attack on everything the UN&nbsp;stands for."

Still, a senior European diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, cautioned that geopolitical tensions could push more developing countries away from Western-led efforts and toward the BRICS group - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - in the hope that it can "better deliver on some of the interests of the developing world."

Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, in a move to encourage healthcare accessibility and inclusivity, on Sunday (September 17), inaugurated India's first dedicated Outpatient Department (OPD) for the transgender community.

The inaugural ceremony was led by Professor Dr. Ajay Shukla, Director of RML Hospital, who laid stress on the significance of providing equitable healthcare services to the transgender community.

"Transgender individuals were facing numerous difficulties in accessing our hospital's services. I spoke to some transgender groups and found that they feel stigmatised. They feel uncomfortable in availing medical care along with other people in public spaces," Dr Shukla said.

"Their numbers in the hospital were negligible, largely due to discomfort and the fear of discrimination. Hence, on the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday, we have initiated this special OPD dedicated to their healthcare needs," he added.

"Government hospitals need to be accessible for every section of society and this is the motivation behind opening a separate OPD to provide healthcare services for the transgenders," Dr Shukla said.

The Libyan Red Crescent released a statement on Sunday (September 17), denying that last week's catastrophic flooding in Derna claimed the lives of 11,300 people after the United Nations shared the death toll in an update citing the rescue group.

"We are shocked to see our name mixed up with these figures," Libyan Red Crescent spokesman Tawfik Shoukri told AFP from Benghazi, adding that "they add to the confusion and distress of the families of the missing".

On Saturday, the United Nations, citing Red Crescent figures, said that the flooding had resulted in 11,300 deaths and added that another 10,100 people were missing in the city.

"These figures are expected to rise as search-and-rescue crews work tirelessly to find survivors," the UN update said.

Nearly a week after Storm Daniel hit northeastern Libya, "the humanitarian situation remains particularly grim in Derna," the update said.

The United Nations (UN) said on Thursday (September 14) that most of the deaths due to floods in Libya's Derna could have been averted if early warning and emergency management systems had functioned properly.&nbsp;

During a press briefing in Geneva, Petteri Taalas, head of the UN's World Meteorological Organization (WMO), said, "With better functioning coordination in the crisis-wracked country, "they could have issued the warnings and the emergency management forces would have been able to carry out the evacuation of the people, and we could have avoided most of the human casualties."

Taalas said that the lack of weather forecasting and dissemination and action on early warnings was a large contributor to the size of the disaster. He also said that the years-long internal conflict in the country meant its meteorological "observing network has been very much destroyed, the IT systems have been destroyed."

"The flooding events came and there was no evacuation taking place because there was not the proper early warning systems in place," the WMO chief further told reporters. "Of course, we cannot fully avoid economic losses, but we could have also minimised those losses by having proper services in place," he added.&nbsp;

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Saturday (September 16), accused the European Union of distancing itself from Turkey and further threatened to part ways with the EU.

The report, which was adopted earlier this week, said that Turkey's acquisition process with the 27-member bloc cannot resume under the current circumstances and also called for the European Union to explore a " parallel and realistic framework" for its ties with Ankara.

"The EU is trying to break away from Turkey," Erdogan told reporters ahead of a trip to the United States. "We will make our evaluations against these developments and if necessary, we can part ways with the EU."

Earlier this week, Turkey's Foreign Ministry released a statement saying that the European Parliament report held unsubstantiated accusations and prejudices and took "a shallow and non-visionary" approach to the country's ties with the EU.

The EU's enlargement commissioner Oliver Varhelyi travelled to Turkey earlier this month, where he said that while the membership had "huge potential", the bloc needed to see action on human rights issues before the talks resumed.

Varhelyi said, "There are very clear criteria set out also by the European Council that would need to be addressed".

In July, Erdogan released a statement saying that he would only support Sweden's NATO candidacy if the European Union resumes membership talks with Ankara. His remarks came at the time of the NATO summit.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had reacted to Erdogan's demand terming it as 'unrelated' to the issue of giving Sweden the security guarantees afforded by the world's most powerful military organisation.

Erdogan asserted that many of the same leaders who were blockading Turkey's EU membership now wanted him to support Sweden's candidacy.

“I would like to underline one reality. Turkey has been waiting at the EU’s front door for 50 years,” Erdogan said.

"Almost all the NATO members are EU members. I now am addressing these countries, which are making Turkey wait for more than 50 years, and I will address them again in Vilnius," Erdogan said moments before boarding his flight for the summit in the Lithuanian capital.

"First, open the way to Turkey's membership of the European Union, and then we will open it for Sweden, just as we had opened it for Finland."

Turkey first applied to be a member of the European Economic Community in the year 1987.

It then converted into an &nbsp;EU candidate country in the year 1999 and formally launched membership negotiations with the bloc in the year 2005.

The talks paused over human rights violation concerns from the European countries that surfaced amid a sweeping crackdown launched by Erdogan after surviving a failed 2016 military coup.

President Tayyip Erdogan says Turkey could 'part ways' with European Union if necessary

The CIA has unveiled the name of the second officer who played a significant role in the 1980 rescue mission of six American diplomats from Iran that inspired the 2012 Oscar-winning film 'Argo'.

Ed Johnson, who is also unofficially known as the 'Canadian Caper,' helped smuggle the diplomats out of Iran disguised as a Canadian film crew.

With his help, two CIA officers and the six diplomats were able to board their flight to Zurich.

His name was revealed on Thursday (September 14), in an episode of the intelligence agency's podcast, The Langley Files.

Even though the CIA always acknowledged that a second officer was extremely important for the operation, his identity was hidden as Johnson did not want to seek public recognition for his role, according to the New York Times.

"And he was very much happy to keep it that way. But it was his family that encouraged him, later in life, to tell his side of the story because they felt there would be value to the world in hearing it."

As per reports, Johnson, who is now 80 years old, is suffering from medical issues that prevented him from appearing on the podcast.

<h2>The daring rescue mission</h2>

Canada and the United States joined hands to make the brazen rescue operation a success. Both countries devised a plan to smuggle the diplomats out of the Iranian capital, Tehran on authentic-looking Canadian passports with fabricated Iranian visas demonstrating that they had been in Iran for just a few days.

The diplomats pretended to be a Hollywood crew who had been looking for perfect locations to shoot their science fiction film 'Argo'. They were successful in walking freely through Iranian customs and boarded their plane to Switzerland in January 1980.

The story of this mission was retold in the movie 'Argo' which was released in the year 2012, featuring actor Ben Affleck who played the role of CIA operative Mendez. &nbsp;

CIA reveals name of second officer involved in 'Argo' rescue mission of 1980 in Iran

The Seattle Police Officers' Guild, on Friday (September 15), defended its official who made insensitive remarks about Indian-origin student Jaahnavi Kandula earlier this year, saying that some of the videos of police that have been shared, do not fairly elucidate the context of the story.

"The video captures only one side of the conversation. There is much more detail and nuance that has not been made public yet," the Seattle Police Officers Guild said in a statement.

It also released a letter written by its officer Auderer in which the latter said that he intended the comment as a mockery of lawyers.

In the letter dated August 3 to the Office of Police Accountability, Auderer said he laughed at the ridiculousness of how these incidents are litigated and the ridiculousness of how he has watched these incidents play out as two parties bargain over a tragedy, as per news agency PTI reports.

"At the time I believed the conversation was private and not being recorded. The conversation was also not within the course of my duties," he wrote in his letter to Gino Betts, director Office of Police Accountability. &nbsp;

<h2>University to&nbsp;award Kandula her degree posthumously</h2>

The Northeastern University released a statement saying that it&nbsp;will award Kandula her degree posthumously.

Chancellor of the University, Kenneth W Henderson made the announcement and reaffirmed that the probes that have been initiated in the incident will bring a measure of justice and accountability.

“The university plans to award Jaahnavi her degree posthumously and present it to her family,” the university stated on its Facebook page.

The university further added that the friends and family members of Jaanhavi are enduring the “additional pain” of new developments related to this tragedy. It also called the remarks by the Seattle police officer “callous and insensitive”.

“We also recognize that our Indian student community, across all Northeastern campuses, has been especially impacted by this tragedy and its aftermath. We stand in solidarity with you and have every expectation that the ongoing investigations will bring a measure of justice and accountability,” the statement read.

It also recalled the time when the Seattle campus community joined together in a surveillance of remembrance and solidarity, after the incident earlier this year.

It then stated that it would be convoking campus gatherings to allow the community to join together in harmony next week.

Kandula hailed from Andhra Pradesh and was pursuing a master’s degree from the Northeastern University campus in South Lake Union. She was set to graduate in the month of December this year.

The 23-year-old student was hit by an overspeeding police vehicle earlier in January this year. The police car was&nbsp;cruising at a speed of 120 mph

In the video, which has now gone viral on social media, Seattle Police Officers' Guild Vice President Daniel Auderer can be heard saying, "She is dead" before bursting out into laughter and referring to Kandula as "a regular person".

Towards the end, the officer says, "She was 26 anyway, she had limited value", getting her age wrong.

After India raised the issue, senior officials in the Biden administration have reportedly assured that prompt action would be taken against the ones involved.
