Apart from the UAE, the crescent Moon was also seen in Saudi Arabia on Sunday, following which the month of fasting started&nbsp;on Monday. Saudi state television reported authorities there saw the crescent moon. Soon after, Gulf Arab nations largely followed the announcement to confirm they as well would start fasting on Monday.

World leaders also shared messages extending wishes to the Muslims across the world celebrating.

Ramadan 2024: Crescent moon sighted in India and Pakistan

The Indian government on Monday (Mar 11) announced the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act by notifying its rules but the opposition was quick to slam the government over the decision&nbsp;and linked it to the upcoming Lok Sabha polls due in April-May.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to the social media platform X and termed the announcement as the BJP's latest move to polarise the elections, especially in West Bengal and Assam.&nbsp;

"It has taken four years and three months for the Modi Government to notify the rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act that was passed by the Parliament in December 2019. The Prime Minister claims that his Government works in a business-like and time-bound manner. The time taken to notify the rules for the CAA is yet another demonstration of the Prime Minister’s blatant lies," he wrote.

"After seeking nine extensions for the notification of the rules, the timing right before the elections is evidently designed to polarise the elections, especially in West Bengal and Assam. It also appears to be an attempt to manage the headlines after the Supreme Court’s severe strictures on the Electoral Bonds Scandal," he added.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh questioned why the government was announcing the decision now after ten years.

"Why did they delay it so much, and if they are implementing it, why not after the elections? Their sole objective is to make every issue a Hindu-Muslim issue. This goes against our Constitution," he said while talking to reporters.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan reacting to the announcement said that it was aimed at "disquieting the nation".

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that centre's decision to notify CAA is against country and that people would respondto it in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Reacting to the government's announcement, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that it was ruling BJP's "publicity for elections" and if the rules "deprive" people of their rights, her party will fight against them.

"Let me see the rules first. The notification has not been issued yet. If people are deprived of their rights under the rules, then we will fight against it. This is BJP's publicity for elections, it is nothing else," the Trinamool Congress chief said at a press conference in Kolkata.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi slammed the Central government for implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, claiming the law is based on Mahatma Gandhi's murderer Nathuram Godse's thought and alleged that it will reduce Muslims to second-class citizens.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav slammed the BJP for releasing the CAA notification and claimed that it&nbsp;was its “game of distraction”.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, security was beefed up in the national capital Delhi and across the country after the announcement.&nbsp;

The rules for implementation of this citizenship act will facilitate the granting of citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was passed in December 2019, and it got the president's assent. The law, however, could not come into effect so far as rules have to be notified for its implementation.&nbsp;

India: Opposition slams decision after Centre notifies CAA rules ahead of polls

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Sunday (March 10) said that Donald Trump will not provide funds to Ukraine for its fight against Russia if he gets elected as US president in this year's elections.

This he said would further expedite an end to the war between the two sides.

Nationalist premier Orban lent his support to long-time ally Trump's bid to return to the White House after meeting the former US president in Florida late on Friday (March 8).

"He will not give a penny into the Ukraine-Russia war and therefore the war will end," Orban told state television late on Sunday (March 10). "As it is obvious that Ukraine on its own cannot stand on its feet."

"If the Americans do not give money and weapons, and also the Europeans, then this war will be over. And if the Americans do not give money the Europeans are unable to finance this war on their own, and then the war will end."

Orban stated that it was "another matter" how the conflict would come to an end with peace negotiations following a truce and how a secure and stable Europe would be established, however, first and foremost peace must be achieved and "he (Trump) has the means for that."

Among noteworthy candidates, Mahua Moitra will fight from Krishnanagar, Saayoni Ghosh from Jadavpur, Gopal Lamba from Darjeeling, Abhishek Banerjee from Diamond Harbour, and actor Shatrughan Sinha from Asansol.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC had secured 22 seats, a decrease from its previous count in 2014. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of the NDA alliance had made significant gains, capturing 18 seats. While the Congress at the time only managed to secure two seats.

As West Bengal gears up for the elections with 42 parliamentary constituencies in the state, TMC attempted a seat-sharing agreement with the Congress as part of the Opposition's INDIA bloc but failed.

As recently as Sunday (Mar 10), the West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee declared that there would be no seat adjustments with Congress in the state.

As per the local media reports, the authorities point towards a potential link to Swetha's husband Ashok Raj's involvement in the incident who abruptly flew to India with their three-year-old son shortly before the victim's body was found.

The local residents in Buckley immediately informed the police after spotting the bin that was dumped alongside the dirt road.

A probe has been launched into the incident. The investigators believe that Shwetha was first murdered at her home where she lived with her husband and son and her dead body was later disposed off in the bin.

A police spokesperson released a statement saying that the authorities believed Shwetha knew who her killer was, however, they were still working to ascertain the circumstances that led to her death, according to The Age.

"At this stage in the investigation, it is believed the parties involved are known to one another and the offender may have fled overseas," the spokesperson said.

"There is no immediate threat to the community and no arrests have been made."

The 80-year-old columnist filed a defamation case against the former US president after he branded her a liar following her accusations of rape.

In his appeal to the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan, Trump said he would cover "all adverse orders, rulings, decrees, decisions, opinions, memoranda, conclusions, or findings" leading to the January 26 verdict.

He further disclosed that he had lined up a $91.63 million bond from Federal Insurance Co for the appeal.

The appeal originated from a Manhattan jury's finding in June 2019 that Trump had defamed Carroll, a former journalist for Elle magazine, by refuting her&nbsp;claim that he had sexually assaulted her in a Manhattan dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in the mid-1990s.

Jurors awarded Carroll $18.3 million of compensatory damages, which included $7.3 million for emotional harm and $11 million for reputational harm.&nbsp;

They also awarded her punitive damages of $65 million.

Trump has argued that he shouldn't owe anything, or as an alternative, the amounts owed should be much decreased.

Donald Trump appeals $83.3mn award to E Jean Carroll in defamation case

In a major setback for Congress, India's Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) on Friday (Mar 8) dismissed the plea moved by the grand old party seeking a stay against Income Tax Department proceedings of recovery and freezing of their bank accounts stating that the application was without merit.

ITAT bench of GS Pannu, Vice President and Anubhav Sharma, Judicial Member passed the order that said, "We do not find that the recovery notice under Section 226(3) of the Act issued by the Assessing Officer on February 13, 2024 is lacking in bona fides, so as to require us to intervene."

"At this stage, we may also refer to the reliance placed by the Senior Counsel on various judgments of the Coordinate Benches in order to support the proposition that it was an accepted practice at the level of the Tribunal that the taxpayer is entitled to a stay on the recovery proceedings on payment of 20 per cent of the demand during the pendency of the Appeal before the Tribunal. The aforesaid argument, in our view, is too general and does not merit acceptance," the bench said.

"Moreover, as we have already discussed each application for a stay has to be decided on its own facts and circumstances, and there can be no generalized approach. The Stay Application is without merit and, it is dismissed accordingly," said the bench.

Senior Advocate Vivek Tankha who appeared for Congress had requested to keep the order in abeyance for 10 days so that the party can approach the High Court.&nbsp;

However, the bench declined the same saying that "we have no such provision or prayer before us".

<h2>'Will move to High Court very soon,' says Tankha</h2>

Tankha, who is Congress' legal cell head, said the party was disappointed by ITAT's order and that they would be approaching the Delhi High Court very soon.

"We are disappointed with the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal order. We will be moving the High Court very soon. They have not followed their own past precedents in granting relief on payment of 20 per cent penalty and that too to a national party which is now on the verge of contesting national elections, which are going to be notified soon," Tankha told news agency PTI.

Congress treasurer Ajay Maken accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of deliberately choosing the timing to coincide with national elections.

"How can one expect fair elections in such a situation when funds to the tune of Rs 270 crore have been frozen or taken away by the Income Tax authorities from Congress party's accounts," he said.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge took to his official X handle and wrote, "Power drunk Modi Government has frozen the accounts of the country's largest Opposition party - the Indian National Congress - just before the Lok Sabha elections."

"This is a deep assault on India's Democracy," he added. &nbsp; &nbsp;

The grand old party's main bank accounts were frozen in February over an income tax demand of Rs 210 crore. However, later an I-T appellate tribunal allowed it to operate&nbsp;pending further hearings.&nbsp;

"At this stage, we may also refer to the reliance placed by the Senior Counsel on various judgments of the Coordinate Benches in order to support the proposition that it was an accepted practice at the level of the Tribunal that the taxpayer is entitled to a stay on the recovery proceedings on payment of 20 per cent of the demand during the pendency of the Appeal before the Tribunal. The aforesaid argument, in our view, is too general and does not merit acceptance," the bench said. "Moreover, as we have already discussed each application for a stay has to be decided on its own facts and circumstances, and there can be no generalized approach. The Stay Application is without merit and, it is dismissed accordingly," said the bench. Senior Advocate Vivek Tankha who appeared for Congress had requested to keep the order in abeyance for 10 days so that the party can approach the High Court. Following the arrest of a former DMK official in connection with a global drug trafficking racket, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin to explain his relationship with the accused.

The party charged that the arrest demonstrates that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has transformed into the "Drug Marketing Kazhagam".

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested 36-year-old Jaffer Sadiq, an expelled DMK functionary of Tamil Nadu, on Saturday (March 9), over his connection with the agency's probe into the drugs trafficking racket estimated to be valued at over Rs 2,000 crore.

In response to the development, BJP Mahila Morcha chief Vanathi Srinivasan took a dig at Stalin and alleged that "it seems" that the accused had close ties with the family members of the Tamil Nadu chief minister.

"Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi, daughter-in-law of Chief Minister M K Stalin has directed a film produced by Jaffer Sadiq. All his social media posts show how close he was with Tamil Nadu sports minister (Udayanidhi Stalin), son of M K Stalin," she said at a press conference at the BJP headquarters here.

"Some of the ruling party (DMK) ministers seem to be very close to Jaffer," she alleged.

"We believe that Jaffer Sadiq used all his political connections in illicit drug trafficking in various countries. It seems that while being an office-bearer of the ruling party (DMK), he developed a very strong network with the police. In one picture, DGP is seen presenting some kind of award to this accused," Vanathi Srinivasan said.

Following Jaffer Sadiq's arrest, NCB deputy director general (operations), Gyaneshwar Singh, told reporters that Sadiq's links with the Tamil and Hindi film industries and some "high-profile" people apart from some instances of "political funding" were being investigated by the agency.

While addressing the press conference, BJP leader Tom Vadakkan said that following Sadiq's arrest in connection to an international drug-trafficking racket, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party had become "Drug Marketing Kazhagam". &nbsp;

"Stalin and company have reduced the DMK government (in Tamil Nadu) into a drug marketing Kazhagam," he charged.

Vaddakan further slammed opposition parties' INDIA bloc asking Congress leader Rahul Gandhi if drug trafficking was acceptable to him.

"Is this the kind of alignment you are trying to bring in Tamil Nadu?" he further asked Gandhi.

Human rights group Amnesty International had placed signs around the museum directing Herzog to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague&nbsp;

South Africa has cited some of the remarks by Herzog in its International Court of Justice lawsuit against Israel.&nbsp;

He previously has said that not only militants but "an entire nation" was responsible for the attack that took place on Oct 7 and that Israel will fight "until we break their backbone".

Herzog claimed that his comments were misrepresented and that only a part of what he said was cited in the lawsuit in order to frame a case against Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The museum officials said that the invitation to Herzog was extended before the war broke out between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The museum released a statement saying it recognised that Herzog's presence raised questions however, it said he represented the homeland of Dutch Holocaust survivors who moved to Israel.

Meanwhile, in a continued effort to secure the release of hostages still held captive in Gaza, the Israeli spy chief met with his US counterpart on Saturday (March 9), Tel Aviv said.

"The head of the Mossad, David Barnea, met yesterday (Friday) with the head of the CIA, Bill Burns, as part of the ceaseless efforts to advance another hostage release deal," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement on behalf of the Mossad.

"Contacts and cooperation with the mediators continue all the time in an effort to narrow the gaps and reach agreements," said Mossad.

The statement comes amid mediators scrambling to secure a new ceasefire deal in the Gaza war before Ramadan which could begin as early as Sunday, depending on the lunar calendar.

"At this stage, Hamas is entrenching its positions like someone who is not interested in a deal and is striving to inflame the region during Ramadan at the expense of Palestinian residents of the Gaza Strip," it said.

Mossad also stated that Hamas was aiming for unrest in the area to worsen during Ramadan.&nbsp;

Israeli officials have stated that the conflict between the warring sides would come to an end only with the defeat of the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

"Last night, HMS Richmond used its Sea Ceptor missiles to shoot down two attack drones - successfully repelling yet another illegal attack by the Iranian-backed Houthis," Shapps said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday.

"The UK and our allies will continue to take the action necessary to save lives and protect freedom of navigation," he added.

US, French and British forces have shot down dozens of drones in the Red Sea area overnight.

On the other hand, Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebel group on Saturday (March 9) said that it targeted bulk carrier Propel Fortune in the Gulf of Aden.

“The naval forces and the air force of the Yemeni Armed Forces carried out two specific military operations. The first operation targeted the American ship “Propel Fortune” in the Gulf of Aden with a number of suitable naval missiles," the group's military spokesman Yahya Sarea said in a televised speech.

"The second operation targeted a number of American war destroyers in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden with 37 drones, and the two operations successfully achieved their goals,” Sarea added.

The Houthi rebels have been launching attacks against ships in the Red Sea since November. The group dubs the attacks as a campaign of solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing war in Gaza between Israel and militant group Hamas.
