Nearly 40 workers were wounded after a boiler exploded at a spare parts manufacturing facility in Haryana's Rewari on Saturday evening (March 16), said officials. The incident occurred in the industrial area of Dharuhera.

The people were immediately rushed to the hospital with burn injuries.

Many of them were taken to the Civil Hospital in Rewari and some were referred to hospitals in Delhi and Gurugram, said police.

Civil surgeon Dr Surender Yadav said one serious patient was referred to Rohtak.

"A boiler has exploded in a factory in Dharuhera, Rewari. We have alerted the hospitals. We have sent the ambulance to the factory. Several people have burn injuries. Around 40 people are injured and there is one serious patient who has been referred to Rohtak," Dr Yadav said.

After receiving the information about the incident, a police squad arrived at the scene and took the wounded to the trauma centre in Rewari.

"We received information that a boiler exploded at a factory in Dharuhera. The injured have been admitted to the trauma centre in Rewari. Those who are in serious condition are being referred to Rohtak. No casualty has been reported," Parmod Kumar, City Police Station was quoted as saying by ANI.

The incident, as per PTI reports, took place on Saturday evening when a boiler exploded in the dust collector of the factory.

Several fire tenders were rushed to the unit to douse the fire.

India's Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on Saturday (March 16) announced that the assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir would be conducted after the Lok Sabha elections.

"We are yet to hold assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The way for conducting legal elections has opened since December 23. This is March, and there is snowfall in the region, hence the question of holding elections does not arise at this point," Kumar was quoted as saying by the news agency ANI.

"We (ECI) went to Jammu and Kashmir and were asked by all the political parties there to hold the state assembly elections with the Lok Sabha polls. After that, we held administrative meetings wherein it was discussed that a lot of security forces would be required to conduct state assembly election with Lok Sabha election in J-K," he said.

"All political parties asked the ECI to conduct an assembly election with Lok Sabha polls, but security agencies advised us that it would not be possible to provide security as there was a need for the deployment of huge security forces. But we are seriously thinking of conducting polls in JK after the Lok Sabha polls. JK will be the first state to go in the election after the Lok Sabha polls," he said.

He further said that the ECI is "seriously" looking into conducting the elections in Jammu and Kashmir after the Lok Sabha polls.

Speaking about the high-level committee submitting its report on the 'One Nation, One Election' proposal, Kumar said that the ECI would conduct elections according to the constitutional provisions.

"There is a provision in the Constitution for conducting elections. Article 83(2) of the Constitution of India states that the House of the People will continue for five years from the date of its first meeting. There is a clause in Section 14 of the RP Act, 1951 that elections for the Parliament be must held six months before the end of the Assembly. <h2>'How is security alright for parliamentary polls and not state elections,' questions Farooq Abdullah</h2>

National Conference supremo Farooq Abdullah, expressed dismay over ECI's decision to not conduct Parliamentary and Assembly polls simultaneously in Jammu and Kashmir.

The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said that the poll body on one hand was planning on conducting Assembly polls in four states that would be coinciding with Lok Sabha elections but J&amp;K was denied this opportunity.

"On one side the Govt of India wanted One Nation, One Election and on the other side, they are holding State elections and parliamentary elections in four states, why is this (J-K) being denied? When every party wanted elections (in J-K) then what is the reason it is not being done?," news agency ANI quoted Abdullah as saying.

Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir to be held after Lok Sabha polls, announces CEC Rajiv Kumar

India's Election Commission on Saturday (March 16) announced the schedule for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in 2024.

The general election for 543 Lok Sabha seats will be conducted in seven phases from April 19 and the result will be out on June 4, announced Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.

The Chief Election Commissioner announced that a total of 96.8 crore voters are eligible to cast their vote in the elections this year.

During a press briefing, Kumar said that there would be 10.5 lakh polling stations and 1.5 crore polling officials and security staff would be deployed in the country to conduct free and fair polls.

"We are committed to giving the nation a truly festive, democratic environment. The term of the 17th Lok Sabha is due to expire on 16th June 2024. The terms of the Legislative Assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim are also due to expire in June 2024. Elections are due in Jammu and Kashmir," he said.

Kumar, who was also accompanied by the two Election Commissioners while addressing the press conference, said approximately 49.7 crore voters are male and 47.1 crore voters are female.

The Election Commissioner during the presser, underlined the main challenges that arise during polls referring to them as the 4Ms.

The four main areas categorised by the EC were:

In order to combat pre-poll and post-poll violence and disputes, Kumar highlighted that the ECI was deploying an adequate number of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to ensure safety.

He further stated that the CAPF would be assisted by integrated control rooms in each district with webcasting in sensitive booths.

There would also be drone-based checking at the borders.

"There is no place for bloodbath and violence in the elections. From wherever we will receive the information of violence, we will take action against them," Kumar said.

In the 2022-23 election cycle, cash seizure surged over 800% to Rs 3,400 crore in 11 states compared to five years ago.

Kumar said that the ECI had directed the enforcement agencies "to crack down on illicit money, liquor, drugs, and freebies, staying vigilant against disruptive methods."

The monetary transactions will be scrutinised and the authorities will also thoroughly inspect non-scheduled chartered flights and helicopters in order to prevent illegal transport of contraband or cash.

<h2>Misinformation</h2>

Kumar said that the political parties were advised to ensure responsible social behaviour.

He highlighted that Section (79)(3)(B) of the IT Act provides the nodal officers in each state with the authority to remove unlawful content.

The Election Commission also announced initiatives like 'Myth vs Reality' that aim at debunking false information by spreading facts via its platform.

British telecoms giant Vodafone said Friday it has agreed to sell its Italian unit to Swisscom for eight billion euros ($8.7 billion) in a cash deal that was slammed by Switzerland's main political party.

Shares in the two companies jumped following the announcement but the hard-right Swiss People's Party (UDC) said that investing abroad again was "irresponsible in the highest degree" following heavy Swisscom losses in Germany, Hungary and Malaysia.

The UDC said the strategy of the federal government, as Swisscom's main shareholder, should be to "ban foreign adventures".

The government, however, gave its green light for the operation on Friday.

Vodafone, which previously rejected offers from French billionaire Xavier Niel's Iliad group for the unit, has been on a cost-cutting campaign that has included layoffs and the offloading of divisions abroad.

The UK group said it intends to return four billion euros to shareholders following the sales of its Italian and Spanish businesses, which together total 12 billion euros.

Swisscom also said it would reward investors, raising dividends to 26 Swiss francs ($29) payable in 2026, compared to 22 francs in 2023.

Vodafone chief executive Margherita Della Valle said the deal with Swisscom marked the "third and final step in the reshaping of our European operations".

"Going forward, our businesses will be operating in growing telco (telephone company) markets -- where we hold strong positions -- enabling us to deliver predictable, stronger growth in Europe," she said in a statement.

Swisscom said in a separate statement that it would merge Vodafone Italia with its own Italian subsidiary, Fastweb, which it bought in 2007.

"Swisscom's purchase of Vodafone Italy and to merge it with its Italian subsidiary, Fastweb, creates a strong contender in the most challenging telco market in Europe," said Mark Diethelm, an analyst at Vontobel.

The transaction -- which is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025 -- will be paid in cash and financed by debt.

"The industrial logic of this merger is very strong," Swisscom CEO Christoph Aeschlimann said. "Fastweb and Vodafone Italia are an ideal fit to create high added value for all stakeholders."

A missile fired at a merchant vessel in the Red Sea by Yemen's Houthi rebel group did not cause any damage to the ship, said the marine security monitors on Friday (March 15) as the Houthis threaten to expand their campaign that has caused disruptions in the global trade.

The Royal Navy's UK Marine Trade Operations and security firm Ambrey had earlier reported that the vessel was damaged after being struck west of the rebel-held Yemeni port of Hodeida in the early hours of Friday.

However, after a daylight inspection, it turned out that the ship had not been impacted by the projectile attack and had also not sustained any damage.

Ambrey stated that the "vessel was listed as Israel-affiliated but had changed ownership in February 2024".

It further added that the merchant ship was headed from Singapore to the Suez Canal with armed guards onboard.

The same tanker, the previous day, was almost struck by a missile southeast of Yemen's port of Aden, said Ambrey.

UKMTO said that when the incident was first reported, the ship was 76 nautical miles (140 km) west of the port of Hodeidah, while a second vessel was 50 nautical miles southwest when it reported missiles flying overhead and exploding in the distance.

"The Master reported two missiles flying over the vessel and heard two loud blasts in the distance. The vessel reported no damage and the crew are reported safe. The vessel is proceeding to its next port of call," UKMTO said in an advisory note.&nbsp;

The national flag carrier of Pakistan, PIA, issued compliance orders to its pilots and cabin crew personnel. The order bars&nbsp;them from observing fasts during the ongoing holy month of Ramadan on the days of their duties.

The airline cited a medical guideline stating that fasting can lead to dehydration and issues of laziness and sleep.

The Corporate Safety Management and Air Crew Medical Centre recommended that PIA pilots and cabin crew members should not observe fasts while on duty for international or domestic flights.

“The PIA's top management, based on these recommendations, has issued compliance orders to the pilots and cabin crew personnel with immediate effect,” an official of the ailing airline said.

“The recommendations have specifically stated that when a person is fasting, he faces dehydration and issues of laziness and sleep,” the official added.

The report also held responsible the PIA and the Civil Aviation Authority over the lack of clear procedures on whether pilots should observe fasts while on duty during the holy month of Ramadan.

The PIA management, in its directive, clarified that pilot or crew members observing fast would be barred from boarding the flight.

Last week, Pakistan's new Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as per several local media reports&nbsp;approved the privatisation of PIA before June 15.

In the year 2022, PIA ranked as Pakistan's third-highest public sector loss-making commodity, demanding&nbsp;Pakistani Rs 11.5 billion per month in order to service its debts, reported the Express Tribune newspaper.

<h2>Who is Sukhbir Singh Sandhu?</h2>

Former bureaucrat, Sandhu is a retired IAS officer of the Uttarakhand cadre 1988 batch.&nbsp;

Born in 1963, he was appointed as the chief secretary of Uttarakhand at the time when Pushkar Singh Dhami took over as the CM of the state in the year 2021. He retired from the post on January 31, 2024.

Sandhu is learnt to have overseen the ideation for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in the state.&nbsp;

An MBBS from the Amritsar Medical College, Sandhu has served as the chairperson of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and has also served as additional secretary, of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development.&nbsp;

He holds a degree in law and also has a master's degree in history from Guru Nanak Dev University.

He has also authored papers on topics like 'Municipal Management and Capacity Building' and 'Urban Reforms'.

He was conferred with the President's Medal for his significant contributions during his tenure as Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation in Ludhiana.

Meet Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, India's new election commissioner

New Zealand's Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters underscored the need to give the current investigation some time before drawing conclusions about the claims made by the Canadian government against India regarding the death of India-designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

New Zealand, which is a member of the Five-Eyes intelligence alliance, maintains its stance that if the accusations made by Canada are proven correct,&nbsp;it would raise serious concerns.

John Tulloch, spokesperson for the Deputy PM, underlining its country's stance stated that it was extremely important for the ongoing probe to conclude before making any further judgements.

"New Zealand's position on the allegations remains unchanged; if they are proven correct, then that would be of serious concern. The minister's point is that this is an ongoing criminal investigation. It needs to run its course before clear conclusions can be drawn," Tulloch told news agency ANI.

Five-Eyes comprises the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.&nbsp;

Nijjar was shot dead while he was coming out of a Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia on June 18, 2023.

His death sparked a diplomatic row between India and Canada after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged New Delhi's involvement in the Khalistani terrorist's killing.

India&nbsp;has rebuffed the accusations calling them "absurd and motivated".

<h2>New Zealand's previous govt looked into Nijjar case: Peters</h2>

Peters, who concluded his successful visit to India on March 13, had underlined the absence of conclusive evidence substantiating the alleged Indian involvement in Nijjar's killing.

“As a trained lawyer, I look okay, so where’s the case? Where’s the evidence? Where’s the finding right here, right now? Well, there isn’t one,”&nbsp;Peters was quoted as saying by The Indian Express newspaper.

On being asked if New Zealand cleared its stance to India on the matter, he had said,&nbsp;“Well, I wasn’t here, it was handled by the previous government. But look, sometimes when you’re hearing Five-Eyes information, you’re hearing it and saying nothing. It is coming past you," he said.&nbsp;

"You don’t know the value or the quality of it, but you’re pleased to have it. You don’t know whether there is going to be substantial material value or nothing. But the very, very critical information that matters… This was mainly handled by the previous government."

<h2>Peters meets Indian counterpart Jaishankar</h2>

Peters, who met with his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar in New Delhi affirmed that his visit to India played a significant role in taking the relationship between the two countries to the next level.

"New Zealand and India are two countries that can, should and will be doing more together," Peters said, adding, "My visit has demonstrated a joint commitment to investing more in building a broad-based, mutually beneficial relationship."

Nijjar killing: New Zealand clarifies position after Deputy PM's remarks on 'evidence' linking India to murder

The Ajit Pawar faction was on Thursday (March 14) questioned by the Supreme Court over&nbsp;using veteran leader Sharad Pawar's images for campaigning.

Officially recognised as the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the Ajit Pawar group was asked to file an undertaking by a bench of Justices Surya Kant and KV Viswanathan that they would neither directly nor indirectly use the name of Sharad Pawar.

It also suggested the Ajit Pawar group to use a symbol other than the 'clock' for elections so that there is no confusion.

The bench told counsel appearing for Ajit Pawar faction, "You are a different political party now. You have chosen not to be with him. Now stick to this. Why to use his (Sharad Pawar) picture... Go with your own identity now..."

The top court further issued a notice to the Ajit Pawar faction seeking reply by March 16 on an application filed by the Sharad Pawar group over 'misuse' of name, and pictures in order to appeal to voters.

The Supreme Court fixed the date&nbsp;for further hearing on the application for&nbsp;March 19.

During the hearing, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who was appearing for the Sharad Pawar faction told the bench about the posters that were on display by the Ajit Pawar faction with the 'clock' symbol and an image of Sharad Pawar.

"This is blatant patent deception, riding piggyback on my goodwill," Singhvi said.&nbsp;

He then claimed, "Democracy, fair and free elections, are part of the basic structure. If they are so confident to win the elections, then let them do that on their own."

To this, Justice Kant questioned senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for the Ajit Pawar group as to why the faction was using Sharad Pawar's photographs. "If you are so confident, then use your photographs," the court said.

Singh responded claiming that this wasn't done by the party but by some stray members.

The bench told Singh, "Then who is responsible? You give an undertaking that you will stop all your members from using his (Sharad Pawar) photo... It is for you to control your workers."

"We need a categorical and unconditional undertaking that the name and pictures of Sharad Pawar will not be used," the bench further said.
