Pakistan's Rights body on Monday (Mar 18) condemned the murder of two sanitary workers who belonged to the Christian community in Faisalabad district.

Identified as Asif Masih, aged 25 and Shan Masih, aged 28, the deceased were the residents of Maqbool Town, in Ghulam Mohammadabad.

Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) fact-finding team looking into the matter stated that both the sanity workers were forced to go inside the choked manhole of the sewerage that was located outside a wedding hall and were asked to clean it without providing them with any hygienic kits, or masks.

They died while attempting the task due to toxic gases, according to an official release.

Naveed Walter, president of Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP), alleged that this is not the first time such an incident has taken place with sanitary workers and that a spate of such episodes have occurred in the past as well.

He said that in WASA and FWMC cases, despite HRFP raising concerns multiple times over important steps and precautionary measures to be taken so as to safeguard the protection of the minority group in the country, no development has been witnessed yet, added the official release.

Walter then accused the local administration and authorities of failing to provide essential hygienic equipment to the sanitary workers.

He said that the HRFP has previously raised issues through advocacy and submitted a Writ Petition at the Lahore High Court in the year 2015 for the rights of sanitary workers.&nbsp;

Highlighting the plight of sanitation workers in the country, the president of HRFP said that many lost their lives whereas many became disabled and developed different kinds of health issues.

Their families did not have any social security, insurance, or any sort of protection measures during and after such incidents. &nbsp;

He stated that the murders of sanitary workers through duties was "unacceptable".&nbsp;

WASA, FWMC, local admirations and the government should take immediate action for the provision of all needed resources and safety equipment.

"You have to protect your votes because the machine (EVM) is a thief. When you cast your vote, check the paper trail and verify your vote... When the INDIA Alliance will form the government, this machine will end. Secondly, the Election Commission will become independent," said Abdullah.

"The first Bharat Jodo Yatra started from Kanyakumari and ended in Kashmir. It was snowing in Kashmir and many of the members had never seen snow in their lives... This is our India," he mentioned.

Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav lauded Gandhi for the Yatra (march) and said, "He (Rahul Gandhi) has tried to deliver a message which is quite significant in today's days...To save India's Constitution, and brotherhood and to defeat hatred, he commenced the 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' and for that my heartfelt thanks to Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party."

The opposition INDIA bloc hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Centre with NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar calling&nbsp;voters to oust BJP from power.

"Mahatma Gandhi gave 'Quit India' slogan from this city, today we (INDIA alliance) should vow to oust BJP from power...," he said.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Mehbooba Mufti, while addressing the Bharat Jodo Nyay Manzil, said that the people of the ruling party were "scared of Gandhi".

"...You (Rahul Gandhi) have Gandhi in your name and the BJP is scared of it. Today, I can see people with different thoughts and ideas here, let me tell you this is 'India.' The election is all set to begin; the public has the most powerful weapon of the Constitution and that is the vote," Mufti said.

INDIA bloc bolsters unity efforts at culmination of Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra

The Bandipora district administration on Sunday (March 17) arranged special air sorties for 120 passengers who were stuck in the snow-bound Kanzalwan area of the Gurez sector in the Bandipora district of North Kashmir.

At least 60 passengers were airlifted from Bandipora to Kanzalwan and 60 from Kanzalwan to Bandipora, said an official according to news agency ANI.

The Bandipora-Gurez road in India's Jammu and Kashmir was blocked on Sunday due to several snow avalanches.

The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has started a massive clearance effort in the area affected by the snow.

In a similar incident earlier this month, a group of seven trekkers who were stranded at Mughal Road in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district due to avalanches and heavy snowfall were safely rescued, said the officials.

Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed a landslide victory in the country's presidential elections extending his rule till 2030.&nbsp;

Vladimir Putin won 87.28% of the votes in the presidential election based on the results of processing 100% of the protocols, according to the CEC data. 
 
Putin's closest opponent, the Communist Party's Nikolay Kharitonov secured the second spot with 4.31% of the votes polled whereas New People Party candidate Vladislav Davankov stood third with 3.85% votes and Leonid Slutsky (LDPR) got&nbsp;3.20%. 
 
The CEC will announce the official election results at a special meeting on Thursday.

The voter turnout across Russia topped 74 per cent, the country's Central Election Commission said.&nbsp;

In a speech at his campaign headquarters on Sunday evening, Putin attempted to denounce the Western criticism of the elections and told his supporters that the West's reaction was on "expected" lines.&nbsp;

"What did you want, for them to applaud us? They’re fighting with us in an armed conflict … their goal is to contain our development. Of course, they are ready to say anything," he said.

<h2>Putin clinches landslide victory in 'new' territories&nbsp;</h2>

Putin gained 94.12 per cent of the votes in Luhansk and over 95 per cent in the Donetsk region, sometimes collectively referred to as the Donbas region that Russia now claims as its own in the wake of the war in Ukraine.&nbsp;

The Russian state media reported that the results from the Republics of Tyva, Khakassia, and Yakutia, the regions of Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Khabarovsk, and from Chukotka Autonomous Region also show Putin leading with roughly 90 per cent of the vote.&nbsp;

Both countries have held two high-level core group meetings on the issue, with the third one expected to take place soon.

Muizzu, who came to power in September 2023, had implemented the phased evacuation and it was his election promise that the Indian troops would be removed from the island nation. &nbsp;

At present, there are approximately 70 Indian troops, along with Dornier 228 maritime patrol aircraft as well as two HAL Dhruv helicopters, stationed in the Maldives.

Ukraine's top official dials India's NSA Ajit Doval ahead of Global Peace Summit

Former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao's daughter K Kavitha was on Friday (March 15) arrested by Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Delhi excise policy-linked money laundering case.

The development came hours after the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader was interrogated following a raid at her Hyderabad residence by the probe agency. On Saturday, Kavitha was&nbsp;produced before a Delhi court by the ED in connection with the case

In the court, Kavitha called her arrest illegal.&nbsp;

In the arrest order, the concerned ED investigation officer said: "I believe that Smt. Kalvakuntla Kavitha w/o Mr. D R Anil Kumar, residing at H. No. 8-2316/S/H, Road No 14, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, Telengana-500034 has been guilty of an offence punishable under the provision of Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (15 of 2003)."

"Now, therefore, in the exercise of the power conferred upon me under sub-section (1) of section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (915 of 2003), I hereby arrest the said Smt. Kalvakuntla Kavitha at 05.20 pm on 15.03.2024 and she has been informed of grounds for arrest. A copy of the grounds of arrest (containing 14 pages) have been served upon her."

The action by ED comes almost two months after the probe agency issued summons to Kavitha that she had skipped.

She has denied any wrongdoing and has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government was "using" the ED as BJP could not gain "backdoor entry" into Telangana.

As per ED, Hyderabad-based businessman Arun Ramchandra Pillai, who was arrested last year in the case, "is one of the key persons in the entire scam involving payments of huge kickbacks and formation of the biggest cartel of the South Group".

"South Group" includes Telangana MLC Kavitha, Sarath Reddy (promoter of Aurobindo Group), Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy (MP, Ongole), his son Raghav Magunta, and others, said the investigation agency.

The South Group was being represented by Pillai, Abhishek Boinpalli and Butchi Babu, said the federal agency in its probe.

Alphabet Inc's Google found itself under scanner after India's antitrust watchdog on Friday (March 15) ordered an investigation into the tech giant's in-app billing system stating that the popular US tech giant implemented its policies in a "discriminatory manner".

The move came amid an ongoing battle between the Indian startups and the tech firm over its fee for in-app payments.

Earlier this month, Google had removed more than 100 Indian applications from its app store citing violations related to payments.

The apps were restored after the intervention of the Indian government.

"We are examining CCI's order initiating the investigation. The CCI has previously examined our service fee in detail between 2020 and 2022 and found no illegality. However, we take our commitment to comply with local laws and regulations in India seriously and will cooperate with the process in every way," said a Google spokesperson.&nbsp;

The startups had urged the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to look into the matter and on Friday, the antitrust body ordered an inquiry stating, "Google is implementing its policies in a discriminatory manner".

It further directed the probe unit to conclude the investigation within 60 days.

The basis of the dispute centres around efforts by some Indian startups to bar the tech giant from imposing a fee of 11% to 26% on in-app payments, after the country's antitrust authorities ordered it to pull down a system of charging 15% to 30% in 2022.

Google has denied any wrongdoing stating that the fee it charges is to back the investments in the Google Play app store and the Android mobile operating system, making sure it distributes it for free.

India's IT and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, clearing India's stance on the matter had said that the country would ensure that the startups get the protection they need.

"India is very clear, our policy is very clear...our startups will get the protection that they need," Vaishnaw had said.

<h2>'Energy of youth cannot be left to the policies of any big tech,' says Vaishnaw&nbsp;</h2>

He said that India has created a robust startup ecosystem of over one lakh startups, and more than 100 unicorns from scratch in over a decade and that the energy of youth and entrepreneurs must be channelised fully and "cannot be left to the policies of any big tech."

"I will be telling Google...Our entrepreneurial energy...startups, look at the whole startup India programme, 10 years back we had practically nothing and today we have more than 1,00,000 startups, more than 100 unicorns...this is something...the energy of our youth, the energy of our entrepreneurs, the energy of our talented people that has to be channelised fully well, it cannot be left to the policies of any big tech," Vaishnaw said.&nbsp;

Google had on March 1, Justiflying its move to delist the apps stated that 10 firms in the country, including several "well-established" ones, did not pay the fees despite having benefitted from the platform and Play Store.

PM Modi launched a scathing attack on Congress accusing the the party of "using and throwing the people of the alliance".

While addressing the public rally, the Indian prime minister said that the NDA "carries both regional aspirations and national progress".

"In NDA we take everyone along, but on the other hand, there is Congress party which has only one agenda - to use and throw the people of the alliance. Today Congress may have formed an INDI alliance, but their thinking remains the same," he said.

PM Modi further said that the NDA's aim is to build a developed Andhra Pradesh for developed India.

"NDA alliance carries both regional aspiration and national progress. The support of BJP in this election, our partners are continuously increasing, the strength of NDA is increasing, both Chandrababu Naidu and Pawan Kalyan have been supporting the rights of the people here, for a long time. We have been working for you day and night, for the development of Andhra Pradesh. The aim of NDA is to build a developed Andhra Pradesh for developed India," the PM said.

He then reiterated the NDA's goal to surpass 400 seats in the Lok Sabha elections.

"See this coincidence, this time the results of the elections are going to be declared on 4th June. The whole country is saying, '400 paar'. '400 paar' for developed India, '400 paar' for Andhra Pradesh'..." he said.

Delhi Rouse Avenue Court on Saturday (March 16) sent Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha to custodial remand until March 23, 2024.&nbsp;She was arrested on Friday (March 15) in connection with the Delhi excise policy-linked money laundering case.

The Special Judge, MK Nagpal, after hearing the submissions, announced the decision to send the BRS leader to ED remand.

Kavitha was produced in the courtroom under heavy security in the presence of lawyers, party workers and media personnel.

While being produced before the court, she termed her arrest as illegal and said, "We will fight it (case) out in court."

Former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao's daughter Kavitha was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate and brought to Delhi after a raid at her Hyderabad residence by the probe agency.

"Now, therefore, in the exercise of the power conferred upon me under subsection (1) of Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (915 of 2003), I hereby arrest the said Kalvakuntla Kavitha at 05.20 pm on 15.03.2024 and she has been informed of the grounds for her arrest. A copy of the grounds of arrest (containing 14 pages) has been served upon her."

The development comes almost two months after the probe agency issued summons to Kavitha that she had skipped.

She has denied any wrongdoing and has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government was "using" the ED as the party&nbsp;could not gain "backdoor entry" into Telangana.
