The Ukrainian military in its statement did not specify the medium it chose to hit the targets, however, a Moscow-installed official in the region reported a major Ukrainian air attack and stated that the air defences had downed more than 10 missiles over the Crimean port of Sevastopol.

"The defence forces of Ukraine successfully hit the Azov and Yamal large landing ships, a communications centre and also several infrastructure facilities of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in temporarily occupied Crimea," Ukraine's military said.

Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Russian-installed governor of Sevastopol, on the Telegram messaging application stated that transport infrastructure including the passenger boats was partially damaged, according to news agency Reuters reports.

"Of the six boats, five had their windows broken ... During the day, the windows of the damaged boats will be replaced and as they are restored they will be brought back online," he said.

Razvozhayev further stated that during the overnight attacks, several vehicles were damaged which included three passenger buses, 13 school buses and one trolley bus.

Pakistan has formally launched its bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for a two-year term from 2025 to 2026, a media report said on Saturday with a promise to “contribute meaningfully" to the council’s mandate for international peace and security.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to UN Ambassador Munir Akram formally announced the cash-strapped country’s candidacy at a reception organised in connection with Pakistan Day celebrations at the UN on Thursday, The Express Tribune newspaper reported.

Seeking support from the international community for Pakistan’s UNSC bid, Ambassador Akram expressed confidence in Pakistan’s ability to "contribute meaningfully to the UNSC’s mandate for international peace and security".

The reception, which was held at the Pakistani Mission to the UN in New York, was attended by UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Dennis Francis, top diplomats from the UN permanent missions and others, the report said.

The envoy emphasised Pakistan’s consistent efforts to champion the causes of the Global South and promote cooperative multilateralism. He also highlighted the country’s contributions to the UN, the report said.

Akram said Pakistan’s foreign policy is “rooted in the principles of the UN Charter, including the non-use or threat of force in international relations, respect for sovereignty, and territorial integrity, right to self-determination and non-interference in internal affairs of states”.

He mentioned Pakistan’s services to key UN bodies, including the UNSC, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Human Rights Council and Group of 77 besides the country’s significant contributions to UN peacekeeping missions, with over 200,000 service members, serving in 46 missions worldwide, the report said.

Rebuffing China's claims regarding Arunachal Pradesh as “ludicrous”, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reiterated that the state was a “natural part of India”.

Jaishankar, responding to China's opposition to Indian leaders visiting the state and its repeated claims on Arunachal Pradesh, said that it was not a new issue.

“This is not a new issue. I mean China has laid claim, it has expanded its claim. The claims are ludicrous to begin with and remain ludicrous today,” he said in response to a question on the Arunachal issue after delivering a lecture at the NUS Institute of South Asian Studies.

He further underlined that Arunachal Pradesh was a “natural part of India.”&nbsp;

“So, I think we’ve been very clear, very consistent on this. And I think you know that is something which will be part of the boundary discussions which are taking place,” he stated.

Jaishankar’s remarks come days after the Ministry of External Affairs dismissed the assertions made by the Chinese defence ministry.

“We have noted the comments made by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Defence Ministry advancing absurd claims over the territory of the Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh."

“Repeating baseless arguments in this regard does not lend such claims any validity. Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India. Its people will continue to benefit from our development programmes and infrastructure projects,” the MEA said in a statement.

The Chinese foreign ministry had earlier objected to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh.

“We reject the comments made by the Chinese side regarding the visit of the Prime Minister to Arunachal Pradesh. Indian leaders visit Arunachal Pradesh from time to time, as they visit other States of India,” the MEA said in a separate response last week.

Jaishankar during his three-day visit to Singapore also highlighted that Pakistan was sponsoring terrorism almost at an "industry level".

He further asserted that India will not overlook terrorists and "will not skirt this problem anymore".

"Every country wants a stable neighbourhood...if nothing else, you want at least a quiet neighbourhood," he said in response to a question on India's ties with Pakistan.

He laid emphasis on the fact that how Pakistan was sponsoring terrorism against India and was using it as "an instrument of statecraft".

"It's not a one-off happening...but very sustained, almost at an industry level...So what we have come to conclude is that we have to find a way of addressing (the menace), that dodging the problem gets us nowhere, it only invites more trouble," he said.

"I don't have a quick instantaneous fix (to this issue). But what I can tell you is that India will not skirt this problem anymore. We are not going to say, 'well, that happened and let's continue our dialogue'...we have a problem and we must be honest enough to face up to that problem, however difficult it is...we should not give the other country a free pass, saying there's nothing they can do about it or it's a very hard problem, or there's so much else at stake that let us overlook," he asserted.

Jaishankar stated that in India now "the mood is not to overlook terrorists".

Jaishankar dismisses China’s claims on Arunachal Pradesh, calls them ‘ludicrous’

A court in Delhi on Saturday (Mar 23) extended the Enforcement Directorate custody of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha till March 26.

She was arrested on March 15 by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Delhi excise policy-linked money laundering case.

While extending the police custody, Special Judge Kaveri Baweja sought the probe agency's response to the bail plea moved for Kavitha.

The ED has alleged that Kavitha, who is former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao's daughter, was one of the significant members of the 'South Group' that is accused of paying the Aam Aadmi Party recompenses worth Rs 100 crore in exchange for a massive share of liquor licences in Delhi.

"Further, K Kavitha and her associates were to recover the proceeds of crime paid in advance to AAP and to generate profits/proceeds of crime from this entire conspiracy," stated ED.

After producing Kavitha in court, the investigation agency stated that she was confronted with the statements of four people along with a forensic report of the data that was extracted from her phone.&nbsp;

The ED also told the court that raids were conducted at the house of her nephew in Hyderabad.

Kavitha was arrested following a raid at her Hyderabad residence by the probe agency.

In the arrest order, the concerned ED investigation officer said: "I believe that Smt. Kalvakuntla Kavitha w/o Mr. D R Anil Kumar, residing at H. No. 8-2316/S/H, Road No 14, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, Telengana-500034 has been guilty of an offence punishable under the provision of Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (15 of 2003)."

"Now, therefore, in the exercise of the power conferred upon me under sub-section (1) of section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (915 of 2003), I hereby arrest the said Smt. Kalvakuntla Kavitha at 05.20 pm on 15.03.2024 and she has been informed of grounds for arrest. A copy of the grounds of arrest (containing 14 pages) have been served upon her."

She has denied any wrongdoing and has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government was "using" the ED as BJP could not gain "backdoor entry" into Telangana.

Delhi court extends ED custody of K Kavitha till March 26 in excise PMLA case

'Conman' Sukesh Chandrashekhar, who is at present lodged in Tihar Jail over his alleged involvement in Rs 200 crore ($23.9 million) money laundering case, on Saturday (Mar 23) threatened to expose Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal following his arrest.&nbsp;

He stated that he would become an approver against the AAP supremo and his team.

"I will become an approver against Kejriwal and his team. I will expose him. I will make sure he is brought to task," Chandrasekhar said.

"All the evidence has been given. Truth has prevailed. I welcome him to the Tihar jail," he said on being asked if he had any evidence regarding the Delhi chief minister.

Chandrashekhar's remarks came hours after Kejriwal was remanded to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate for seven days, i.e., until March 28.

Sunita Kejriwal, the wife of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, on Saturday (Mar 23) read out her husband's message from prison stating that he would be out soon.

"There are several forces within and outside India that are weakening the country. We have to be alert, identify these forces and defeat them," said Sunita Kejriwal in a video address.

It said that certain human genes were also added to it in order to make it fit for the human body.

The hospital stated the patient, Richard Slayman of Weymouth, Massachusetts, who had undergone the transplant, was "recovering well at MGH and is expected to be discharged soon".

Slayman, who also suffered from Type 2 diabetes and hypertension previously received a kidney transplant in the year 2018.

However, five years later, the organ began to fail and he had been on dialysis since then.

Slayman said that he okayed getting the pig kidney transplanted as it would not only help him but also generate hope for "the thousands of people who need a transplant to survive”.

“This health disparity has been the target of many national policy initiatives for over 30 years, with only limited success,” said Slayman’s nephrologist, Dr Winfred Williams.

“An abundant supply of organs resulting from this technological advance may go far to finally achieve health equity and offer the best solution to kidney failure – a well-functioning kidney – to all patients in need,” Williams said.

It is pertinent to note that recently pig hearts were transplanted into two patients in the United States. However, both survived only less than two months.

A body massager cannot be listed in the category of adult sex toys, said the Bombay High Court on Wednesday (Mar 20) and added that it will not be prohibited for import.

A division bench of Justices Girish Kulkarni and Kishor Sant rescinded the Customs Department's order of confiscating consignments that contained body massagers.

The Commissioner of Customs, claiming that the body massagers could also be used as adult sex toys, had confiscated the goods in 2022.

The Commissioner stated that before making a decision to prohibit the goods, the opinions of experts were taken who had opined that massagers could be used as erotic toys for sexual pleasure.

The high court underlined that because body massagers could be subjected to an alternative use, it did not put the products under the scanner of the ones that were prohibited by the department for imports.

"It appears that such experts clearly opined that although undoubtedly the item as imported was a body massager, however, it was also their opinion that the item could also be used for the purpose which the Commissioner contemplated," the high court said.

It further said that the massagers could be used as sex toys was indeed a concoction of the Commissioner of Customs' imagination.

The high court said that the findings recorded by the commissioner are "peculiar and clearly appear to be quite astonishing and too far-fetched when he reduces in writing his vivid imagination on what an equipment for a body massage would be and more particularly on his perception on the perceived uses."

"It was clearly the figment of the Commissioner's imagination and/or his personal perception that the goods are prohibited items," the high court said.

It also noted that the body massagers were traded in domestic markets and were not considered as the items that are prohibited.

Severely denouncing the Commissioner, the court stated that the adjudicating officer did not act as a prudent official who otherwise would be expected to perform reasonably especially while making decisions related to the issuance of clearance of goods.

The bench dismissed the petition filed by the Commissioner of Customs and upheld the tribunal order.
