Hair thinning: Tried-and-tested ways to achieve thicker and healthier locks

A recent study conducted by scientists at the Universities of Arizona and Kansas suggests that working at a busy coffee shop may be healthier than doing so in a quiet office. The study finds — perhaps unsurprisingly — that loud noises at the office have a negative impact on employee well-being. But the study also suggests that complete silence is not conducive to a healthy workplace.

The sweet spot for office noise? About 50 decibels, roughly equivalent to birdsong or the pitter-patter of moderate rain.

“Everybody knows that loud noise is stressful, and, in fact, extremely loud noise is harmful to your ear,” said study co-author Esther Sternberg, director of the University of Arizona Institute on Place, Wellbeing &amp; Performance, adding, “But what was new about this is that with even low levels of sound — less than 50 decibels — the stress response is higher.”

The study — part of a larger workplace well-being research project led by Sternberg — suggests that if employers intend to build or redesign their office spaces with employee health and well-being in mind, they might want to consult acoustical engineers who can help them dial in conditions for good environmental sound, said Sternberg, who is also director of research for the University of Arizona Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine and a member of the university’s BIO5 Institute.

The study was published earlier this month in the journal Nature Digital Medicine. Sudha Ram, professor of management information systems at the Eller College of Management, is the study’s senior author. Karthik Srinivasan, an assistant professor at the University of Kansas, led the research when he was a doctoral student at Eller and is the paper’s lead author.

“When we think about well-being, typically we think about emotional or mental well-being,” Srinivasan said, adding, “We hardly ever consider the physiological well-being or the actual ‘what’s happening in our body,’ which is also important to understand when we’re continuously exposed to environmental factors such as sound.”

Sternberg, who also holds a joint appointment in the College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture, is a renowned expert on the ways workspaces can influence physical and mental health. A study she led in 2018 showed employees who worked in open office seating — at desks that aren’t separated by partitions — had greater daytime activity levels and lower stress levels in the evening, after work hours, compared to workers in private offices and cubicles.

But open office spaces also come with a common complaint from people who work in them: noise. With this latest study, Sternberg and her co-authors shed more light on employees’ physiological reactions to office sound.

The new study was part of Sternberg’s larger research project — called Wellbuilt for Wellbeing — in partnership with the U.S. General Services Administration, the federal agency that oversees basic operations for all nonmilitary federal government buildings, including building and buying real estate, managing buildings’ operating systems, and managing government-wide reentry into the workplace amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

To measure the impact of sound on office workers, researchers asked 231 of the agency’s employees working in four buildings across the U.S. to wear two devices for three days. One device, worn around the neck, measured sound levels in the person’s work environment.

Another, worn on the chest, measured participants’ physiological stress and relaxation levels, using heart rate variability, or the varying lengths of time between each heartbeat. The chest-worn monitors were designed by Aclima&nbsp;Inc., which also partnered with the study.

Heart rate variability is a direct result of breathing, Sternberg said: As a person inhales, his or her heart rate slightly increases, and it decreases as the person exhales, causing variability between heartbeats.

The more variable the space between heartbeats, the healthier the person is.

“One way to think of it is, the least-variable heart rhythm is a straight line,” Sternberg said, referring to a flatline on an electrocardiogram — a sign someone has died.

“You don’t want that – you want a variable heart rate,” Sternberg added.

The researchers measured heart rate variability alongside environmental sound and then used mathematical modelling to determine how changing sound levels affect a person’s physiological well-being.

Participants also answered questions sent to their smartphones about how they were feeling at random times throughout the day.

The results showed that when a worker’s environmental sound level was above 50 decibels, each 10-decibel increase was related to a 1.9 per cent decrease in physiological well-being. But when office sound was lower than 50 decibels, each 10-decibel increase related to a 5.4% increase in physiological well-being.

Humans’ tendency to get distracted, Sternberg said, is a result of the brain’s stress response to potential threats. Our brains are ‘difference detectors’ that take note of sudden changes in sounds so we can decide to fight or flee, she said.

That may explain why low, steady sounds help mask distractions in the workplace, she added.

“People are always working in coffee shops – those are not quiet spaces. But the reason you can concentrate there is that the sounds all merge to become background noise,” Sternberg said, adding, “It masks sound that might be distracting. If you hear a pin drop when it’s very, very quiet, it will distract you from what you’re doing.”

The study, Sternberg said, offers precise data that can guide employers in designing office spaces to maximise employee well-being. Acoustical engineers already take great care in choosing or designing furniture, flooring, wall coverings and other aspects of spaces such as concert halls, recording studios and museums.

If employee health is a priority, Sternberg said, “There’s no reason why these simple interventions can’t be installed in office spaces to mitigate sound distraction.”&nbsp;

The Recording Academy announced the performers for the 2023 Grammys and it will be a star-studded affair. Bad Bunny, Mary J. Blige, Brandi Carlile, Luke Combs, Steve Lacy, Lizzo, Sam Smith and Kim Petras are all set to hit the stage at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena on Feb 5.

According to Billboard, all of these artists are nominated in Big Four categories at the Grammys except for Combs, and Smith and Petras.

Combs received three nominations: best country duo/group performance, best country song,&nbsp;and best country album.

Elambharathi, in a public notice, warned civil and criminal proceedings against those who infringe upon the actor's personality, including his voice, image, name, and other unique behaviour of his.

The notice, which was issued on Saturday, stated that only the actor has control over the commercial utilisation of his name, personality, voice, image, etc.

The notice also stated that several platforms, product manufacturers and&nbsp;mediums&nbsp;were misappropriating his name, image, voice, caricature image, artistic image, and AI-generated images to create confusion among the public and to entice them to buy products or to access a site.

The notice added, "His charisma and nature as an actor and human being has earned him the title of 'Superstar' as he is called by millions and millions of his fans across the world. The sheer proportion of his fan base and his respect across the film industry is unmatched and indisputable. Any damage to his reputation or personal life would entail a great loss to our client."

It is to be noted that Rajinikanth is presently shooting for the big-budget movie&nbsp;'Jailor', in which Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is playing a cameo role.

Hollywood actor Gerard Butler recently revealed on an episode of 'The Drew Barrymore Show' that he "almost killed" Hilary Swank on the&nbsp;set of 'PS I Love You'.

He shared that he still feels guilty over the hilarious yet dangerous incident that resulted in his co-star going to the hospital for quick treatment.

Sharing the incident with Drew Barrymore, the actor referred to the scene where he had to dance wearing nothing but a pair of suspenders and said, "I literally shot that scene for a day and a half and I had to dance like an idiot in the suspenders."

"At one point, the clip, which was a crocodile clip, got stuck in the television as I'm crawling towards her and she's right in front of me and she's laughing hysterically," he added.

The clip was "so dangerous" that the camera crew devised plastic covers as protection.

"I had to ping it, and it would go past my face. And this time I'm crawling towards the bed. It gets stuck," he revealed. "It releases, flies over my head, hits her in the head, slashes her head. I cut her open."

Swank was then rushed to the hospital. "Imagine a studio, and in three seconds, everybody's gone, and I'm just sitting there in my boxer shorts and my boots and a pair of socks and I just started crying," he said.

"'I just scared Hilary Swank!' I almost took her eye out and I just made a fool of myself for two days and this is what I have to show for it. She's off to the hospital," he stated.&nbsp;

Eating a high-fat diet regularly could reduce the brain's ability to regulate calorie intake, says a new study. A new research conducted on rats found that after short periods of being fed a high-fat or high-calorie diet, the brain reduces the amount of food eaten to balance calorie intake.&nbsp;The development of medicines for the condition may be aided by a better understanding of the brain’s function and the intricate mechanisms that underlie overeating, a behaviour that can result in weight gain and obesity. Because obesity is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular illnesses and type 2 diabetes, it is a global public health concern. 
 
Around half of the adults in England are obese, and 63 per cent of those are regarded to be over a healthy weight. When they leave elementary school, one in three kids is obese.

Dr Kirsteen Browning, Penn State College of Medicine, US, said, “Calorie intake seems to be regulated in the short-term by astrocytes. We found that a brief exposure (three to five days) to a high fat/calorie diet has the greatest effect on astrocytes, triggering the normal signalling pathway to control the stomach. Over time, astrocytes seem to desensitise to high-fat food. Around 10-14 days of eating a high fat/calorie diet, astrocytes seem to fail to react and the brain’s ability to regulate calorie intake seems to be lost. This disrupts the signalling to the stomach and delays how it empties.”

Astrocytes initially react when high-fat/calorie food is ingested. Their activation triggers the release of gliotransmitters, chemicals (including glutamate and ATP) that excite nerve cells and enable normal signalling pathways to stimulate neurons that control how the stomach works. This ensures the stomach contracts correctly to fill and empty in response to food passing through the digestive system. When astrocytes are inhibited, the cascade is disrupted. The decrease in signalling chemicals leads to a delay in digestion because the stomach doesn’t fill and empty appropriately.

The vigorous investigation used behavioural observation to monitor food intake in rats (N=205, 133 males, 72 females) which were fed a control or high fat/calorie diet for one, three, five or 14 days. This was combined with pharmacological and specialist genetic approaches (both in vivo and in vitro) to target distinct neural circuits. Enabling the researchers to specifically inhibit astrocytes in a particular region of the brainstem (the posterior part of the brain that connects the brain to the spinal cord), so they could assess how individual neurons behaved to studying rats’ behaviour when awake.

Human studies will need to be carried out to confirm if the same mechanism occurs in humans. If this is the case, further testing will be required to assess if the mechanism could be safely targeted without disrupting other neural pathways.

The researchers have plans to further explore the mechanism. Dr Kirsteen Browning said,

“We have yet to find out whether the loss of astrocyte activity and the signalling mechanism is the cause of overeating or that it occurs in response to the overeating. We are eager to find out whether it is possible to reactivate the brain’s apparent lost ability to regulate calorie intake. If this is the case, it could lead to interventions to help restore calorie regulation in humans.”
