People with poor literacy face more mental health problems such as loneliness, depression and anxiety, according to a review of studies which used data from nine countries, including India. The research, published in the journal Mental Health and Social Inclusion, is the first to look at the global picture of literacy and mental health.

The researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the UK found that little or no literacy disproportionately affects women, who account for two-thirds of the world’s illiterate.

“Despite rising literacy rates over the past 50 years, there are still an estimated 773 million adults globally who can’t read or write,” said Bonnie Teague from UEA’s Norwich Medical School.

“Literacy rates are lower in developing countries and those with a history of conflict, and women are disproportionately affected,” Teague said.

The researchers noted that people with more literacy tend to have better social outcomes in terms of things like finding employment, being paid well, and being able to afford better food and housing.

Not being able to read or write holds a person back throughout their life and they often become trapped in poverty or more likely to commit crimes, they said.

“We also know that lower literacy is related to poorer health, chronic diseases and shorter life expectancy,” Teague said.

“There has been some research examining the potential association between literacy and mental health but this is the first study looking at the issue on a global scale,” he added.

The team reviewed data from 19 studies that measured both literacy and mental health. These studies took place across nine different countries — US, China, Nepal, Thailand, Iran, India, Ghana, Pakistan, and Brazil, and involved almost two million participants.

The researchers used information relating to mental health and literacy to assess the globally reported relationship between these two factors.

They found a significant association between literacy and mental health outcomes across multiple countries.

“People with lower literacy had greater mental health difficulties such as anxiety and depression,” said Lucy Hunn, who completed the review as part of her Doctorate in clinical psychology training at UEA.

“We can’t say for sure that poor literacy causes poor mental health, but there is a strong association,” Hunn said.

The researchers noted that there may be multiple factors impacting mental health which also impact literacy such as poverty or living in an area with a history of conflict.

However, the data suggests that even in these places, worse mental health is seen for those without literacy skills, they added.

Your little bunnies can do all this and a lot more at Hong Kong's unique luxury rabbit resort called Bunny Style, which is owned by Donna Li.

Donna Li spoke to AP&nbsp;and revealed that she’s fully booked for the holiday and keeps her guests happy with regular exercise, parties, spa treatments, and lots of hay. "We aim to provide a secure environment," Li said.

Li, who has two pet rabbits of her own, set up Bunny Style in June. She started with just a playroom offering space to hop and relief from Hong Kong’s hot, humid weather.

"To begin with, my idea was mainly about setting up a safe indoor play space with a suitable temperature for rabbits,"&nbsp;Li said. As the government began lifting COVID-19 restrictions in September, Li sensed a need and swiftly set up boarding facilities. They were completely booked over the Christmas holidays and Li has already started taking bookings for Easter.

With 15 rabbits, Li and her staff will be busy over the holiday, the most important in the Chinese calendar. Apart from feeding, some owners order special vegetable cakes in advance.&nbsp;Then there are other services like hair-brushing, nail trimming, and exercising.

"I think rabbits understand what people say. They can sense whether we are being nice to them and look after them well," Li said. "And so when I look after them, I talk to them a lot, telling them how beautiful and cute they are."

A live stream is&nbsp;also provided to the pet parents so that they can see their rabbits&nbsp;actively hopping and enjoying themselves.

Bunny Style charges about $15 per night, including half an hour of supervised playtime. Beauty treatments and special menu items are extra.

The animals'&nbsp;popularity in Hong Kong has inevitably led to some owners finding they've bit off more than they can chew. For that, there are shelters such as Tolobunny, set up in 2015 and dedicated to finding new homes for abandoned rabbits, often at public adoption events.

"Our observation is that throughout the year, especially at festive holidays like Valentine’s Day, Easter or Christmas, there are more people who want to keep rabbits, but after a few months, there will be more abandoned rabbits,"&nbsp;Ng said.

Homeless dogs and cats still get more care, but "I hope there will be more attention and resources for all kinds of abandoned animals,"&nbsp;founder Winky Cheng said.

Kylie Jenner made heads turn at Schiaparelli's couture runway during Paris Fashion Week as she arrived, in a black strapless gown adorned with a hyper-realistic faux lion's head brooch, to see the label's Spring-Summer 2023 couture collection.

The 25-year-old's chic figure-hugging black velvet dress looked perfect with the huge stuffed accessory as she headed to the venue this Monday.

For her footwear, she opted for statement gold heels and paired them with a snakeskin gold handbag.

Meanwhile, on the runway, Naomi Campbell flaunted a black faux fur coat with a wolf's head emerging from her left shoulder. Canadian model Shalom Harlow donned a strapless snow leopard tube dress with a roaring feline head bursting through the bust.

According to the show notes, the collection was inspired by Dante's "Inferno" and the nine circles of hell, which is actually a metaphor for the doubt and creative torment most artists experience. The collection literally draws from the three beasts that appear in the 14th-century poem. Creative director Daniel Roseberry reimagined the leopard, the lion and the she-wolf in the collection and left everyone stunned.

American singer and rapper Doja Cat, who has delivered several chartbusters like 'Kiss Me More', 'Woman', 'Need to Know', and 'No Police' among others, flaunted her impeccable, other-worldly and unique fashion sense in Paris on Monday.

Covered in red paint, glitter, and over 30,000 blood-red Swarovski crystals, the Grammy Award winner arrived for the Schiaparelli Haute Couture show during Paris Fashion Week and grabbed eyeballs.&nbsp;

To match her gorgeous red strapless Schiaparelli Haute Couture dress which featured a hand-knitted skirt with lacquered wooden beads and a red silk faille bustier, the singer-rapper ensured that her entire head, face, chest and arms were artfully bedazzled in red. And, the results were jaw-droppingly amazing.

According to a post featured on the official Schiaparelli Instagram account, Doja paired her ensemble with&nbsp;Trompe lœil knee-high boots. To accessorise, she opted for&nbsp;a dramatic wrap along with&nbsp;giant gem earrings in the same scarlet shade.

She called the look -&nbsp;"Doja's Inferno", which is partly inspired by Dante's "Inferno", according to a press release. In an Instagram post, Pat gushed about working with Doja. He wrote, "Such a pleasure working with the gorgeous @DojaCat and the amazing @DanielRoseberry on the 'Doja's Inferno' look for @Schiaparelli's FW23 Haute Couture collection."

He continued, "Doja's sublime patience during the 4 hours and 58 minutes it took to create the look with #TeamPatMcGrath, which was covered in over 30,000 hand-applied @swarovski Crystals, was inspiring. The final product was a magical, mesmerising masterpiece of sparkling brilliance. Xx."

Other than Doja, Kylie Jenner also made a jaw-dropping appearance at the Schiaparelli show. She arrived wearing a black gown affixed with a huge lion head. The faux animal head was reportedly made from "hand-sculpted foam" as well as "wool and silk faux fur". The piece was "hand painted to look as life-like as possible, celebrating the glory of the natural world", Schiaparelli explained via an Instagram post.

Kannada actor Darshan and his wife Vijaya Lakshmi have been booked under the Wildlife Protection Act for keeping four rare bar-headed geese at their farm in Mysuru.&nbsp;The Karnataka forest authorities&nbsp;have also booked the farmhouse's manager&nbsp;Nagaraj.

After the actor revealed in an interview that he has these rare migratory birds at his farmhouse, the forest department sleuths, on Friday, conducted raids and&nbsp;seized the rare birds, which were later released near the Hadinaru lake in Bengaluru, which is considered a magnet for migratory birds.

Deputy Conservator of Forests B. Bhaskar also stated that his sleuths found a black swan, ostrich, emu and a few other rare species of birds at Darshan's&nbsp;farmhouse.

Ironically, the actor is an ambassador for wildlife conservation and was also nominated for&nbsp;Karnataka State Board for Wildlife last year.

According to a report by Deccan Herald, the actor could face up to three years in prison, if found guilty under Sections 9, 39 and 51 of the Wild Life Protection Act 1972 and Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Act 2022.

American singer Rita Ora has finally broken her silence on speculations that she is in a "throuple" with her filmmaker-husband Taika Waititi and actress Tessa Thompson, which stemmed from a group picture that recently went viral.

The snap showed the 32-year-old singer&nbsp;and the 47-year-old filmmaker sitting and sharing an intimate hug with the 'Creed' star during a party session.

Addressing the rumours, Ora said, "Have you ever been in a situation where you've had a lot of drinks and everyone's your best friend? And then the next day you're like, 'I was talking to this person in the smoking area for four hours and I've got no idea who they are.' Literally - that (photograph) was just a bunch of friends having a good time. (Taika and Tessa) had a crazy schedule and everyone was letting loose."

She also told the British GQ that she chose "not to acknowledge" the headlines hoping that they would go away.

Meanwhile, Waititi previously addressed the rumours&nbsp;in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald. He said,&nbsp;"I think in the world of the internet, everything goes away pretty quickly."

He added, "And also, 'Is it that big a deal?' No, not really. I was doing nothing wrong. It's fine."

Rita also said her life "became better" when she got together with Taika, with whom she had been friends for several years before they embarked on a romantic relationship.

Ora further reiterated that she never thought about settling down until she met Taika.

She said, "It was our bond that made me think, I'm ready to settle down. I never think about things like that because I don't want to jinx anything."

After allegedly receiving death threats over the content of his upcoming film 'Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh',&nbsp;filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi, on Monday, filed a police complaint&nbsp;and requested additional security for himself. Santoshi&nbsp;wrote a letter to the Special Commissioner of Police Deven Bharti and reported that ever&nbsp;since a&nbsp;group of people with vested interests interrupted one of his press conferences, he has been receiving&nbsp;death threats online.

"Later several threats were received from some unknown people asking me to stop the release and promotion of this movie. I feel unsafe and I submit that grave damage and injury could be caused to me and my family members if such persons are set free," Santoshi said in the letter.

The filmmaker requested the police officials to take the necessary steps, in connection to the complaint.

"I request you to urgently provide me with additional security to protect myself and other members of my family," the filmmaker, known for making hard-hitting dramas such as 'Ghayal', 'Damini', and 'Pukar, added.

During a press conference of 'Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh', which was held on Friday, a few protesters, who posed as media personnel, waved black flags and shouted slogans like "Mahatma Gandhi Zindabaad". They claimed the film undermines the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and glorifies his assassin, Nathuram Godse.

The makers of the film reported the incident to the police immediately to avoid any unpleasant situation.

Written and helmed by Santoshi, the film depicts the war between the two opposing ideologies between Gandhi and Godse. It features Deepak Antani and Chinmay Mandlekar as Mahatma Gandhi and Nathuram Godse, respectively.

Backed by Santoshi Productions LLP and PVR Pictures, the film&nbsp;is scheduled to hit theatres on January 26.&nbsp;

According to the latest update, Alec&nbsp;will continue to play grandfather Harland Rust in the film while Joel will return as its director following his wounding in the fatal October 2021 shooting, revealed Melina Spadone, an attorney for 'Rust' movie productions.

The late cinematographer&nbsp;Hutchins' husband Matt Hutchins will remain&nbsp;executive producer of the project, she added. "The film is still on track to be completed," Spadone shared&nbsp;in the statement.

This Thursday, Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies&nbsp;said that she plans to charge both Baldwin and the film's armourer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, with two counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the cinematographer's death.

Baldwin in October reached a settlement of a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the Hutchins family under which Hutchins would take a production role in 'Rust' and filming would resume this month.

Baldwin has denied responsibility for the shooting, saying live ammunition should never have been allowed on set and weapons handlers were responsible for firearm safety.

An investigation by Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office has yet to reveal how live rounds got inside the production.

Legal analysts said prosecutors face an uphill battle convicting Baldwin of criminal charges without proof he knew live ammunition was present and took no precautions.

"There doesn't seem to be a lot of evidence that people were acting in a way that they were actually aware of what the danger was, and acting with disregard for the danger," said Kate Mangels, an attorney with entertainment law firm Kinsella Weitzman Iser Kump Holley.

'Rust' to be completed with Alec Baldwin as lead star, attorney says

For a man with seemingly infinite creative ambitions, it is fitting that Indian designer Rahul Mishra's latest Paris haute couture collection attempts to encapsulate the entire universe. Monday's Fashion Week debut of "Cosmos" became the latest showcase for one of Asia's leading stylists, whose works have been modelled by Michelle Yeoh, Viola Davis and other top film stars.

Mishra invited AFP to tour his frenetic workshop on the urban fringes of New Delhi several times over the collection's production, from its initial sketchbook concepts to his last-minute agonies over sudden revisions.&nbsp;

His long and laborious journey reflects a desire to evoke the boundless mysteries of life, told through his trademark embroidered flourishes of animal contours and luminous details.&nbsp;

"This is actually the true cosmos in its ultimate manifestation," Mishra, 43, told AFP this month while proudly unveiling one of the more than two dozen gowns he was about to send to Paris.&nbsp;"It justifies the name of the collection."

The gown's flowing pleated silhouette is alive with intricately embroidered depictions of the animal kingdom, where schools of fish rub shoulders with the night sky's constellations.&nbsp;

Mishra has spent months engrossed in every microscopic detail of the piece, but even in the frenzied final week before its Paris debut, he was compelled to make a major conceptual change.

"It looks dramatic, it takes too much attention," he says as he agonises over a bold decision to pin two giant golden fish ornaments to the gown's bust, wondering if it upsets the delicate harmony he has cultivated.&nbsp;

Mishra often defers to the expertise of his team and solicits their opinion but they share his taste for the flamboyant and give a resounding vote of approval to the new look.&nbsp;

"The more we try to know about the cosmos, the less we know; the more we try to know about ourselves, the more remains to discover -- this is the true meaning of cosmos," Mishra said of his artistic vision.&nbsp;

The theme is well-suited to a designer whose creations fuse together as many materials, textures and patterns as the laws of physics allow.&nbsp;

"We work like an art studio that tries to mix mediums, to assemble ideas, to create a new expression that is not necessarily just fashion," he said.&nbsp; "Our dresses are full of life -- they are growing, expanding, they are reaching for something in an ever-expanding universe."

The collection's more extravagant pieces reflect Mishra's preoccupation with the natural world and include a sequined gown with translucent veils, modelled on the pulsing movements of a jellyfish.

Other eye-catching works feature elegant embroidery of pink-tinged leaves, golden ladybird brooches, or frilly bustiers with blue sequins and marine life motifs to elicit the ocean's depths.&nbsp;

Monday's Fashion Week debut of "Cosmos" became the latest showcase for one of Asia's leading stylists, whose works have been modelled by Michelle Yeoh, Viola Davis and other top film stars. Mishra invited AFP to tour his frenetic workshop on the urban fringes of New Delhi several times over the collection's production, from its initial sketchbook concepts to his last-minute agonies over sudden revisions. "We work like an art studio that tries to mix mediums, to assemble ideas, to create a new expression that is not necessarily just fashion," he said. "Our dresses are full of life -- they are growing, expanding, they are reaching for something in an ever-expanding universe." The collection's more extravagant pieces reflect Mishra's preoccupation with the natural world and include a sequined gown with translucent veils, modelled on the pulsing movements of a jellyfish.
