<p>Scientists found that prairie voles bred without receptors for oxytocin and showed the same monogamous mating, attachment, and parenting behaviours as regular voles, calling into question the notion that oxytocin is the "love hormone", essential for forming social bonds and parenting.</p>

<p>New research from scientists at UC San Francisco (UCSF), US, and Stanford Medicine, US, shows that the receptor for oxytocin may not play the critical role that scientists have assigned to it for the past 30 years, turning a decades-old dogma on its head.</p>

<p>In addition, females without oxytocin receptors gave birth and produced milk, though in smaller quantities, than ordinary female voles, the study said.</p>

<p>The results indicate that the biology underlying pair bonding and parenting isn't purely dictated by the receptors for oxytocin, sometimes referred to as the "love hormone". The study appears in the journal Neuron.</p>

<p>"While oxytocin has been considered 'Love Potion #9', it seems that potions 1 through 8 might be sufficient," said psychiatrist Devanand Manoli, a senior author of the paper, UCSF.</p>

<p>"This study tells us that oxytocin is likely just one part of a much more complex genetic program," said Manoli.</p>

<p>Because prairie voles are one of the few mammalian species known to form lifelong monogamous relationships, researchers study them to better understand the biology of social bonding.</p>

<p>Studies in the 1990s using drugs that prevent oxytocin from binding to its receptor found that voles were unable to pair bond, giving rise to the idea that the hormone is essential to forming such attachments.</p>

<p>For this study, 15 years in the making, Manoli and neurobiologist Nirao Shah, then at UCSF and now at Stanford Medicine, applied new genetic technologies to confirm if oxytocin binding to its receptor was indeed the factor behind pair bonding.</p>

<p>They used CRISPR to generate prairie voles that lack functional oxytocin receptors. Then, they tested the mutant voles to see whether they could form enduring partnerships with other voles, the study said.</p>

<p>To the researchers' surprise, the mutant voles formed pair bonds just as readily as normal voles.</p>

<p>"The patterns were indistinguishable."</p>

<p>"The major behavioural traits that were thought to be dependent on oxytocin - sexual partners huddling together and rejecting other potential partners as well as parenting by mothers and fathers - appear to be completely intact in the absence of its receptor," said Manoli.</p>

<p>Even more surprising for Manoli and Shah than the pair bonding was the fact that a significant percentage of the female voles were able to give birth and provide milk for their pups, the study said.</p>

<p>Oxytocin is likely to have a role in both birth and lactation, but one that is more nuanced than previously thought, Manoli said.</p>

<p>Female voles without receptors proved perfectly capable of giving birth, in the same timeframe and in the same way as the regular animals, even though labour has been thought to rely on oxytocin, the study said.</p>

<p>The results help to clear up some of the mystery surrounding the hormone's role in childbirth: Oxytocin is commonly used to induce labour but blocking its activity in mothers who experience premature labour is not better than other approaches for halting contractions.</p>

<p>When it came to producing milk and feeding pups, however, the researchers were taken aback. Oxytocin binding to its receptor has been considered essential for milk ejection and parental care for many decades, but half of the mutant females were able to nurse and wean their pups successfully, indicating that oxytocin signalling plays a role, but it is less vital than previously thought, the study said.</p>

<p>"This overturns conventional wisdom about lactation and oxytocin that's existed for a much longer time than the pair bonding association," said Shah.</p>

<p>"It's a standard in medical textbooks that the milk letdown reflex is mediated by the hormone, and here we are saying, 'Wait for a second, there's more to it than that.'"</p>

<p>Manoli and Shah focused on understanding the neurobiology and molecular mechanisms of pair bonding because it is thought to hold the key to unlocking better treatments for psychiatric conditions, such as autism and schizophrenia, that interfere with a person's ability to form or maintain social bonds.</p>

<p>This conclusion makes sense from an evolutionary perspective, they said, given the importance of attachment to the perpetuation of many social species.</p>

<p>"These behaviours are too important to survival to hinge on this single point of potential failure," said Manoli.</p>

<p>"There are likely other pathways or another genetic wiring to allow for that behaviour. Oxytocin receptor signalling could be one part of that program, but it's not the be-all-end-all."</p>

<p>According to a new study from Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet, men who have bad co-parenting relationships in the months following delivery are more likely to be depressed when their children are infants. The findings are published in the Journal of Affective Disorders.</p>

<p>“We have a lot to gain as a society if we support co-parenting relationships more during the early stages of parenthood,” said Michael Wells, associate professor at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, Karolinska Institutet. “One way to do that is to screen fathers for their co-parenting status during infancy and toddlerhood and to offer interventions aimed at improving collaboration and communication around the child if needed.”</p>

<p>Around 9-10 per cent of dads experience postpartum depression, which is high compared with the overall population. Children who grow up with depressed dads are also at a higher risk of mental, emotional, and behavioural problems in their youth, according to prior research. By identifying modifiable factors that reduce the risk of depression in dads, researchers hope to develop interventions that can prevent mental illness in both parents and children.</p>

The participants were asked to complete questionnaires where they ranked symptoms of depression and the nature of their co-parenting relationships. Data were collected at three-time points when the children were on average 8, 13, and 26 months old. About 20 per cent of dads reported symptoms of depression at some point during the study.</p>

<p>According to the findings, two-thirds of fathers with exceptionally poor co-parenting relationships during the first year after birth are likely to have symptoms of depression when their children become toddlers. Conversely, fathers with higher parenting scores are more likely to have fewer symptoms of depression. The researchers also found associations between depression at earlier stages and worse co-parenting relationships later on.</p>

<p>“We found bidirectional associations between depression and poor co-parenting, meaning these two factors seem to influence each other in both directions. However, the strongest predictor for the development of depression was a poor co-parenting relationship in the early stages of childhood, as compared to the other way around,” Michael Wells said.</p>

<p>'Scrubs' and 'Californication' writer and producer Eric Weinberg has been accused of sexually assaulting 13 women, ranging between the age of 18 to 35, from 1998 to 2017 in a dozen new lawsuits and most of them allege a common pattern.</p>

<p>The 62-year-old is already facing 18 criminal charges involving five other women. Two women had filed lawsuits against Weinberg in November, alleging that he sexually assaulted them on separate occasions in 2019.</p>

<p>According to the complaints, Weinberg would approach women in public places like cafeterias or grocery stores and pose as a photographer. He would invite them to participate in a photo shoot at his home, where he would sexually assault them, according to the lawsuits.</p>

<p>In fear of being killed or seriously injured, the victims did what Weinberg said and also remained quiet until news of his predatory behaviour came out in public.</p>

<p>The lawsuits identify the plaintiffs by pseudonymous initials. One of the complaints covers two accusers, who allege that they went together to Weinberg's house in October 2013 and that he sexually assaulted both of them.</p>

<p>Weinberg was arrested in July but later released on $3.225 million bail. He was charged on October 5 and his bail was increased to $5 million.&nbsp;A judge revoked his bail on October 25, after finding that the allegations suggest that Weinberg "cannot stop and will not stop his sexual assaults on women, and therefore he poses a danger to the safety of women".</p>

<p>At the time, prosecutors revealed that the LAPD had received more than 70 tips about Weinberg, who is currently being held at the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic.</p>

<p>On the professional front, Weinberg worked on 'Scrubs' from 2001 to 2006. He also worked on 'Veronica's Closet', 'Californication' and 'Anger Management'.</p>

The 30-year-old opened up about their experience since changing their pronouns from 'he/him' to 'they/them', saying that they find the negative reaction to their identity quite "exhausting".</p>

<p>In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the Grammy Award winner said, "My family, they can communicate with me. They always did. But they communicate with me now in an even better way. My love life has become better from it. I feel lovable. I feel comfortable in my skin, but I wear what I want to wear."</p>

<p>He added, "Since changing my pronouns, it felt like a coming home."</p>

<p>Even though things were great at home, the recent 'Saturday Night Live'&nbsp;musical guest, unfortunately, had to face transphobia in their home country.</p>

<p>Shedding light on the same, the singer said, "I think all the only negatives in the struggle have been in my public life and my job," before adding, "And just the amount of hate and sh*tiness that came my way was just exhausting. <p>Giving an example of a personal "sad" experience that left him startled, Smith said, "I'm being abused in the street verbally more than I ever have. So,&nbsp;the hardest part&nbsp;I think was being at home in the UK and having people shouting at me in the street. Someone even spat at me in the street."</p>

<p>Smith also highlighted how hard it's for trans and non-binary people, who don’t have similar privileges as them, to live and be themselves in the United Kingdom.</p>

<p>"What I find hard about it is it's like, if that's happening to me and I'm famous, I'm a pop star, can you imagine what other kids, like queer kids are feeling?" Smith said. "And it's just so sad that we're in 2023 and it's still happening. It's exhausting and especially in England."</p>

But for me, I can deal with not Googling myself, and not reading comments. That's something I can control," they continued. "What people don't realize with trans, non-binary people in the UK is, it's happening in the street." Giving an example of a personal "sad" experience that left him startled, Smith said, "I'm being abused in the street verbally more than I ever have. So, the hardest part I think was being at home in the UK and having people shouting at me in the street. Someone even spat at me in the street." Smith also highlighted how hard it's for trans and non-binary people, who don’t have similar privileges as them, to live and be themselves in the United Kingdom. "What I find hard about it is it's like, if that's happening to me and I'm famous, I'm a pop star, can you imagine what other kids, like queer kids are feeling?" Smith said.
