<p>The Court of Appeal, comprising justices Jeremy Poon, Aarif Barma, and Thomas Au, concluded in a written judgment that the housing authority's treatment of married same-sex couples was discriminatory and that they should be granted equal treatment.</p>

<p>“The differential treatment in the present cases is a more severe form of indirect discrimination than most cases because the criterion is one which same-sex couples can never meet,” said the ruling by the judges, according to reports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Unmarried queer couples can now adopt children, and transgender persons can marry their chosen partner regardless of sexual orientation."</p>

<p>"Centre should create policies that will protect LGBTQIA++ couples from getting harassed, discriminated, or hated by public eyes. This isn't about a specific community anymore. This is about future generations who will be born next," Bisoi added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian Supreme Court's judgment, although not the final step, is a leap toward a more accepting society, where love knows no bounds, and every family is embraced for who they are.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Another member of the queer community, Adarsh from Cuttack in the east Indian state of Odisha, spoke about the importance of recognising the fundamental right to marriage for all.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Marriage is just not an act, but rather a right and dignity for those who wish to tie in it in spite of their sex and sexual orientation. Marriages are not meant to define husband or wife but life partners Hence, marriage is a union of soul, which must be in right for all," Adarsh said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Varun from the south Indian state of Hyderabad pointed out the power of the Supreme Court's ruling when it directed the centre, states, and Union Territories to end discrimination against the queer community.</p>

It is reminding&nbsp;them of their grim reality and the continued cycle of violence they are stuck within in&nbsp;this long-standing conflict.</p>

<h2><strong>Here is the timeline of the Palestinian movement:&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The Israel-Palestine conflict has its roots back to the late 19th century when the Zionist movement gained momentum in Europe. This was to establish a home for Jews in Palestine.</p>

<p>In 1922, the first census of Palestine revealed a diverse population, including 589,177 Muslims, 83,790 Jews, 71,464 Christians, and others. Britain allowed a substantial influx of Jewish immigrants, leading to Palestinian unrest and revolts against the British authorities and Jewish settlers.</p>

<h2><strong>Creation of Israel and Palestinian resistance</strong></h2>

<p>The peace initiative requested "full Israeli withdrawal from all the territories occupied since 1967, including the Syrian Golan Heights to the lines of June 4, 1967 as well as the remaining occupied Lebanese territories in the south of Lebanon."</p>

<p>It also called on the acceptance of the "establishment of a Sovereign Independent Palestinian State on the Palestinian territories occupied since the 4th of June 1967 in the West Bank and Gaza strip, with east Jerusalem as its capital."</p>

<p>Israel, however, did not respond positively to this offer.</p>

<p>The Gaza Strip has been a focal point of ongoing conflicts, with Israel launching military airstrikes in recent years. The state of Israel claims that it is in response to the air raids conducted by the Hamas terrorist group in Gaza.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These attacks have resulted in significant loss of life and destruction. The recent blockade of Gaza, imposed by Israel, has led to dire humanitarian conditions for many Palestinians, making life for them there exceedingly difficult without food and electricity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There is an urgent need for international efforts to find a sustainable and equitable resolution to this prolonged crisis as the tensions will otherwise only flare up, just like they did on October 7. If not, there will be continued turmoil in West Asia and there will be suffering to countless people.&nbsp;Both Israelis and Palestinians.</p>

<p>However, with the fall of the Ashraf Ghani regime and the return the Taliban to power, the support the school had depended on has crumbled. The Afghan embassy in India, which had played a vital role in facilitating this support, suddenly found itself cut off from funding.</p>

<p>Mohammad Qais Malikzada, the deputy head of the Afghan community group in India, shared the grim situation facing the school and its dedicated staff.</p>

<p>"Earlier, our school was supported by the Indian government when our embassy was opened here," he explained. "There were a few NGOs that were supporting the school. But now, there is no support. Teachers have not gotten salary for the past six to seven months."</p>

<p>The school's financial troubles were compounded by allegations of corruption within the Afghan embassy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Due to corruption inside the embassy, our funding was stopped," Mohammad Qais continued, and added with deep sorrow, "Just two days back, we have closed the school. The owner of the school building has asked us to evacuate the building as we are unable to pay the rent."</p>

<p>It is a desperate situation, with the school's future hanging by a thread.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The students, he said, cannot go to any Indian school because they struggle with the local Hindi language and can't afford private school fees.</p>

<p>"We have temporarily placed the school items, like chairs and tables in a room," Mohammad Qais said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In order to move the school to a different location, we will need money. But for that, we would need a security deposit amount and rent for one month immediately. We have requested some NGOs as well for that and have sent them our proposal."</p>

<p>The Afghan community, left to fend for itself, reached out to the Afghan embassy for assistance, but their pleas fell on deaf ears.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We requested the embassy. They denied. The salary they were receiving as per the proposal was more than 25000, but they were only giving 10,000 to the teachers. School rent was 1,10,000 which they have not given for three months. They have done all the corruption and left the embassy."</p>

<p>With their backs against the wall, the Afghan community turned to the Indian government and other NGOs for help.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"As social workers, we have no savings to put in order to give a place for the school. We can collect money by putting requests in our groups but that way we will only be able to secure rent for a month. After that, from where will we get money from the second month onwards? Even teachers will need a salary. They can only teach for free for a month. They will need money to support their families after that."</p>

<p>The Afghan community's message is clear. They need help to save their school, a lifeline for over 200 students, from sinking into oblivion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Supriyo Chakraborty, one of the petitioners who had been fighting for the recognition of his same-sex marriage with partner Abhay Dange, is disappointed after the Indian Supreme Court verdict on Tuesday (Oct 17).</p>

<p>The apex court refused to pass a ruling recognising same-sex marriages, saying it is the role of the legislature to do so, even as it endorsed several issues close to the hearts of the LGBTQ community.</p>

<p>Chakraborty told WION, "We are deeply disappointed by the judgment today. Though the court has reiterated that queer people have the right to form relationships, they stopped well short of legal recognition."</p>

<p>Despite the landmark decision to decriminalise homosexuality in 2018, the couple, Chakraborty and Dange, were still facing difficulties in registering their marriage and obtaining legal status.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chakraborty said, "On a personal level, we feel proud that we fought this battle."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Though we lost, lots of dinner table conversations were initiated because of this case. We remain hopeful that one day we will have full marriage equality."</p>

<p>But in the eyes of the law, their union remains unrecognised.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an earlier conversation with WION, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/strangers-in-the-eyes-of-law-wion-speaks-with-hyderabad-gay-couple-569191">Supriyo </a>had said, "Marriage brings with it a basket of rights, such as the right to take healthcare decisions for your spouse, right to inheritance, etc. We want access to those rights, and hence it is very important to get legal recognition for our marriage."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Their marriage, blending two different cultural backgrounds in a mesmerising Bengali-Punjabi fusion, showed their love for each other.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The wedding festivities included a beautiful Mehendi, haldi, and sangeet function, celebrating their union with the same joy and fervor as any other couple.</p>

<p>Dange, Chakraborty's partner, revealed some of the practical challenges they faced due to the lack of legal status.&nbsp;</p>

<p>My recent chat with an angry resident of Jaffa in southern Tel Aviv made me want to write this piece. I am not going to downplay the human cost and deep-seated anger many Israelis feel in the wake of the October 7 terror attack by Hamas on Israel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the emotions of the residents were undeniably raw and understandable, it is also crucial to approach the situation from a more nuanced perspective.</p>

<p>Beyond the sudden outburst of shock, anger, despair, and calls for revenge, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a complex issue with deep historical roots and multiple points of view.</p>

<p>The resident I spoke with told me that "Hamas only wants death".&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is reasonably fair to say so. The European Union and the US have already designated the Palestinian organisation as a terrorist group.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Hamas does not capture the entire spectrum of Palestinian sentiment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While Hamas has been involved in acts of terrorism, one should not forget that not all Palestinians support their actions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Conflating the actions of one group with an entire community of innocent civilians is not only unfair but also counterproductive in the pursuit of peace.</p>

<p>The situation in the Gaza Strip is not black and white.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The tragedy of the loss of life must be acknowledged on all fronts, rather than resorting to divisive rhetoric that Gaza must be demolished.&nbsp;</p>

<p>IDF has asked the 1.1 million residents of northern Gaza to evacuate to the south. The hospitals there also received the order.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is not unjust to raise questions to Israel about what it is setting out to do with the Palestinian civilians, whose chances of seeing another sunrise are bleak.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Many Israelis are calling for a decisive military response to the trauma they have experienced.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While there may be legitimate security concerns that Israel needs to address, it is imperative that the rights and well-being of the Palestinian people in Gaza are also taken into consideration.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A comprehensive and sustainable solution to the conflict should involve dialogue, diplomacy, and a commitment to peaceful coexistence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mind you, I am talking about the co-existence of Israel with Palestinians, not Hamas.</p>

<p>The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a matter of international concern.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While it's crucial to acknowledge the frustration that Israelis are feeling, it's equally vital to approach the issue with a focus on empathy, dialogue, and a long-term commitment to peace for all parties involved.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Strong earthquake tremors rocked northern parts of India whereas strong tremors were felt in the capital city of Delhi on Sunday (Oct 15).&nbsp;As per initial reports, the magnitude of the earthquake was 3.1 on a seismic scale. <p>United States Geological Survey has reported that a fresh, 6.3 magnitude earthquake has hit northwest of Herat city.</p>

<p>Earlier quakes have led to the killing of thousands in the country. This yet another earthquake was hit at 0336 GMT, 33 kilometres (20 miles) from the city.</p>

<p>The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) has said that magnitude of the earthquake was 6.5 and occurred at a depth of 10 km.</p>

EU regulators delay approval of Novavax's variant-tailored COVID vaccine: Report

<p>A group of miscreants entered a residence in Baba Haridas Nagar locality in the Indian national capital of Delhi, masquerading as Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers. They made off with a staggering $384k in cash, leaving the neighbourhood in shock.</p>

<p>As per reports from the Delhi Police, one of the culprits has been apprehended, while intense operations are currently underway to track down the remaining perpetrators.</p>

<p>The team's quick action secured a substantial part of the stolen money. The police control room (PCR) team managed to intercept a suspicious vehicle in Narela area, recovering a substantial sum of $84.05k in cash.</p>

<p>The apprehended suspect was found in possession of a firearm and four live cartridges, raising more questions about the crime.</p>

<p>The victim of this heist is a young individual working in the private sector banking industry in Gurugram.</p>

<p>Identified by the alias 'Sundar,' the 25-year-old had recently completed a significant land sale transaction. He had received a payment of $384k in cash, securely storing it inside the confines of his home, tucked away beneath his bed.</p>

<p>The remainder of the sale price was received through two separate cheques.</p>

Israel-Hamas war: Ice cream trucks become makeshift morgues in Gaza

<p>Ukraine is finding it harder to secure financial support as the attention of officials in key donor countries shifts to upcoming elections and geopolitical tensions heighten, Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko told Reuters on Saturday.</p>

<p>"I see a lot of tiredness, I see a lot of weakness among our partners, they would like to forget about the war but the war is still ongoing, full-scale," Marchenko said on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank meetings in Marrakech.</p>

<p>He said Ukraine is making "twice the effort right now to convince our partners to provide us with support compared to the last annual meetings" in April.</p>

<p>As the war with Russia rages on, Ukraine needs to secure Western financial support to cover a $43 billion budget gap in 2024. Talks this week have been overshadowed by the conflict between Israel and Hamas, which broke out just as delegates were making their way to Marrakech.</p>

<p>Marchenko said "a geopolitical shift and internal political context in different countries" was dampening governments' appetite to support Ukraine, mentioning elections scheduled in the U.S. and the European Union next year.</p>

<p>Ukraine has earmarked additional tax receipts and funds to be raised from internal debt, but it will be dependent on outside help for the bulk of next year's spending requirements.</p>

<p>The EU is working on a 50 billion-euro ($52.6 billion)Ukraine package for 2024 through 2027. Marchenko said Ukraine is seeking 18 billion euros of that in 2024, matching the package received for this year.</p>

<p>Marchenko welcomed the efforts to harness frozen Russian state assets, saying that what was previously portrayed by Western backers as an "achievable goal" now "sounds like a plan". Legal concerns, among others, have complicated recoveries.</p>

<h2>CREDITOR DISCUSSIONS</h2>

<p>Since Moscow's February 2022 invasion, most of Ukraine's bilateral lenders have suspended repayment obligations until 2027, and the country has agreed a two-year freeze on $20 billion of international bonds that runs through August.</p>

<p>Ukraine has been sounding out major investors over plans to restructure the international debt and the possibility of raising fresh financing, Reuters reported on Oct. 9, citing people with knowledge of the discussions.</p>

<p>"We have some time to prepare discussions with private creditors," Marchenko said, declining to provide a timeframe on when formal talks with creditors may start.</p>

<p>"Our natural desire is to preserve access to the market," he added.</p>

<p>Marchenko said credit enhancement notes could be "one of the ways" to raise funds, but that how such guarantees would work depends on the future of Ukraine's growth, among other economic factors. This has not been a topic of discussion at the meetings in Marrakech, he said.</p>

<p>Ukraine's economy is set to grow 5% in 2024, Marchenko told the meetings earlier this week, and sufficient gas storage for the winter should buttress the economy from a potential rise in prices, he told Reuters.</p>
