Australia rejects indigenous voice referendum seeking to amend 122-year-old constitution

<h2><strong>Recent deadly attack by Hamas</strong></h2>

<p>Hamas recently carried out a highly destructive attack, marking one of the deadliest incidents in Israel's history.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This attack resulted in the loss of more than 1,300 lives and the abduction of numerous hostages who were taken to Gaza.</p>

<p>In response, Israel launched a series of extensive airstrikes, intensifying the ongoing 75-year conflict with the Palestinians. According to Gaza authorities, the airstrikes have caused the death of approximately 1,900 people.</p>

<p>Russia has drafted a resolution at the United Nations Security Council.</p>

<p>Early results from Australia's historic referendum to recognise Indigenous people in the constitution suggest the proposal will be rejected, in a setback to the country's efforts for reconciliation with its First Peoples.</p>

<p>Australians had to write 'Yes' or 'No' on a ballot paper with a question asking whether they agree to alter the 122-year-old constitution to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people, and create an Indigenous body, called the Voice to Parliament, that can provide advice to the government on Indigenous issues. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;</p>

<p>With 11.4% of the vote counted, the "No" campaign led "Yes" by 55.4% to 44.6%. Australian broadcaster ABC projected that New South Wales, which includes Sydney and is Australia's most populous state, would vote "No".</p>

<p>Counting is under way in three of Australia's eastern states and its capital region. Voting continues in West Australia, Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory, which are in earlier time zones.</p>

<p>Academics and human rights advocates fear a win for the "No" camp could set back reconciliation efforts by years.</p>

<p>Australia's Indigenous citizens, who make up 3.8% of the country's 26 million population, have inhabited the land for about 60,000 years but are not mentioned in the constitution and by most socio-economic measures are the most disadvantaged people in the country.</p>

<p>The Voice to Parliament was proposed in the Uluru Statement from the Heart, a 2017 document crafted by Indigenous leaders that set out a roadmap for reconciliation with wider Australia.</p>

<p>Supporters of the proposal believe entrenching an Indigenous Voice into the constitution would unite Australia and usher in a new era with its Indigenous people.</p>

<p>Many Indigenous people favour the change, but some say it is a distraction from achieving practical and positive outcomes. The political opposition has criticised the measure, saying it is divisive, would be ineffective, and would slow government decision-making.</p>

<p>In 1967 a referendum to count Indigenous people as part of the Australian population was a resounding success with bipartisan political support. The 2023 referendum has not garnered unified political support, with leaders of the major conservative parties campaigning for a "No" vote.</p>

<p>Referendums are difficult to pass in Australia, with only eight of 44 succeeding since the country's founding in 1901. Constitutional change requires a majority of votes both nationwide and in at least four of the six states.</p>

<p>The United States has extended the work permit validity that will offer employment authorisation cards to specific non-immigrant categories, including Indian nationals waiting for green cards, for a duration of five years. This move is set to have a positive impact on a large number of Indians currently residing in the country.</p>

<p>The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in a statement said, "We are updating guidance in the Policy Manual to increase the maximum validity period to 5 years for initial and renewal Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) for certain noncitizens who are employment authorized incident to status or circumstance, including those admitted as refugees, paroled as refugees, and granted asylum, as well as recipients of withholding of removal."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We are also increasing the maximum validity period to 5 years for initial and renewal EADs for certain noncitizens who must apply for employment authorization, including applicants for asylum or withholding of removal, adjustment of status under INA 245, and suspension of deportation or cancellation of removal," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Reducing processing time</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>This extension of the maximum EAD validity period to five years is aimed at significantly reducing the number of new Forms I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, that the USCIS receives for renewal EADs in the coming years.</p>

<p>This, in turn, will contribute to their ongoing efforts to decrease processing times and address backlogs.</p>

<p>When a student replied, "six million," the lecturer allegedly responded, "Yes. Only six million," and went on to assert, "Colonisers killed more than six million. Israel is a coloniser."</p>

<p>The flight was also carrying two infants, media reports said. Earlier on Friday (Oct 13) morning, the arrival of the first charter flight took place which repatriated 212 Indian nationals from Israel to India.</p>

<p>The foreign minister announced the repatriation operation days after the Hamas terrorist organisation attacked Israel in a barbaric way, slaughtering men, women, and children of all ages.</p>

But before the news of her tragic death befell&nbsp;Eyal, he was clinging to the hope that his daughter had been taken hostage and not been killed.</p>

<p>Danielle, a native of Palo Alto, California, had been attending the festival with her boyfriend of six years. But, their lives were tragically cut short during the vicious Hamas assault, Eyal recounted to CNN.</p>

<p>Eyal got to know about the killing of his daughter just hours before speaking to the media outlet. His beloved daughter was one of the victims of the attack.</p>

<p>Employing the tracking features of Danielle's phone and Apple watch, her family managed to locate the site where their youngest daughter met her unfortunate end.</p>

<p>Eyal described the nightmarish scenario in which his daughter's car appeared to be encircled and attacked by members of Hamas.</p>

American man traces daughter's murder location via tracking features of her phone, Apple watch

<p>However, a challenge emerged about two weeks ago when&nbsp;his employer demanded him to fly at short notice to Germany from the Solomon Islands. His seniors at the Kiel Institute for Worldwide Economy (IfW) set a deadline for him to get back to his desk.</p>

<p>Later, his employer on Wednesday (Oct 11) told him that his contract had been terminated and he had been sacked from his employment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“IfW seems to ignore that we have entered the Anthropocene era and that the most important Earth ecosystems are close to collapse if not already collapsed,” Grimalda said.</p>

<p>“In this era, wasting 4.5 tonnes of CO2 (the difference between the flight emissions and the slow-travel emissions) to comply with the absurd request to be physically present in Kiel at such short notice is morally unacceptable and epitomises the ultimate privilege of the global elites."</p>

Indian Ministry of External Affairs also said that it is in touch with and aware of an injured Indian national who is in hospital and improving. "We haven’t heard of any casualty so far," MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said during the weekly presser.</p>

<p>"Around 18,000 Indians are in Israel. There is conflict going on and it is a matter of concern. Indians advised to follow advisories issued by our mission," he added.</p>

<p>He also noted that three to four Indians are in Gaza and the ministry is in touch with them.</p>
