<p>One of the interesting trends seen in the last three votes is that Jordan is gradually falling short of the required support to become the House Speaker. In the second vote, which was held on Wednesday (Oct 18), 22 Republicans voted against Jordan. 20 opposed him on Tuesday (Oct 17).&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes after Jordan jumped back in the race for House Speaker, soon after saying that he will not throw his hat in the ring for another bid. It is now over two weeks that the US House is leaderless and is in limbo.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 58-year-old McCarthy was backlashed by Republican hardliners after he supported Democrats to pass a stopgap funding measure to evade a government shutdown. McCarthy's ouster was spearheaded by Republican lawmaker Matt Gaetz.</p>

<p>A month after the Canadian Parliament applauded and gave an astounding honour to a Ukrainian immigrant Yaroslav Hunka who fought for a Nazi unit during World War II, Russia slapped genocide charges against the 98-year-old, media reports said. Russian investigators announced this measure against Hunka&nbsp;on Friday (Oct 20), AFP news agency reported.</p>

<p>Russia's Investigative Committee said it charged Hunka in absentia. The charges leveled are of "genocide of civilians on the territory of the Ukrainian SSR during the Great Patriotic War".</p>

<p>In the unfortunate turn of events last month, the controversial figure was bestowed with thunders of claps in the Canadian Parliament, a move which was quick to receive worldwide condemnation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka, who fought for the First Ukrainian Division, was welcomed with cheers by parliamentarians. Even Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made this surprising gesture towards the Nazi veteran in the House of Commons.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The First Ukrainian Division was also known as the Waffen-SS Galicia Division or the SS 14th Waffen Division. It was a voluntary unit that was under the command of the Nazis. “I am very proud to say that he is from North Bay and from my riding of Nipissing--Timiskaming,” said Speaker Anthony Rota while introducing Hunka.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A Pakistani man was nabbed by India's anti-terrorist squad on Friday (Oct 20) for allegedly spying on Indian defence personnel via WhatsApp, media reports said citing an official. The arrest was made in the Indian state of Gujarat by state police's ATS team.</p>

<p>Reports said that the accused is a native of Pakistan and was granted Indian citizenship in 2005.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The incident came to light after ATS received military intel that an Indian WhatsApp number was operated from Pakistan to spy on defence personnel.</p>

<p>The identified suspect behind the crime is 53-year-old Labhshankar Maheshwari from Tarapur town in Anand district in Gujarat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The snooping was done to allegedly help Pakistani authorities. The plot involved sending spyware to the WhatsApp of Indian defence personnel in the garb of a fake 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, which sought to encourage every Indian household to sport the national flag.</p>

<p>When these officials clicked on the spyware, it installed the tracking malware.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The accused has been booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 123 (concealing with intent to facilitate a design to wage war against the government) and 121-A (conspiracy to wage war against the government) and under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What led to the conspiracy?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>According to the investigation, Maheshwari conceded to have helped in the conspiracy so that he could fast-track his visa process, along with that of his wife and two other family members.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They wanted to visit Pakistan to meet relatives, reports said quoting ATS Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Jat.</p>

<p>"In return, the person with contacts in the Pakistan embassy (high commission) asked Maheshwari to start WhatsApp on his mobile phone using a SIM card, which he received from one Saqlain Thaim, a resident of Jamnagar. Maheshwari then shared the OTP to activate WhatsApp with that man," Jat said.</p>

Pakistani man nabbed for snooping on Indian defence officials via WhatsApp

<p>Canada has once again made a poor diplomatic show as it chose to evade the most important question posed by a journalist amid the country's row with India over the killing of&nbsp;Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. During the interaction with the media, after Canada withdrew 41 of its diplomats from India, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly was asked a straightforward question. The question was whether Canada has shown the evidence to India which confirms that there is an Indian government hand behind the killing of the Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, as alleged by Ottawa.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the question was fired by the journalist, the Canadian minister looked like she was at a loss for words and had no direct answer.</p>

<p>India has already asked Canada to give it the evidence to support its contentious claims, but Ottawa has so far come up with nothing but the same rhetoric.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While navigating through her stammering and fumbling, Joly said that Canada first raised the issue with India, and then only the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau chose to bring it to the Parliament.</p>

<p>Later, when the media person pressed on, Joly once more dodged the question and continued saying that Indian officials were made aware of the "credible allegations" and based on that India has decided to take their own decisions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Upon listening to Joly dilly-dallying for about a minute and not responding to the posed question, the reporter while thanking Joly also asserted that she did not answer what was asked. At this point, the Canadian FM looked a bit irate and asserted that she did address the question and that "links and information" were shared.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This came as India, while demanding a reduction in the number of Canadian diplomats, also cautioned Ottawa that if this was not made sure, it would remove their diplomatic immunity.</p>

<p>India's external affairs ministry has since responded and rubbished "any attempt to portray the implementation of parity as a violation of international norms."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Our actions in implementing this parity are fully consistent with Article 11.1 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations," it said.</p>

<p>During a diplomatic dispute that is now easing, China had criticised Australia for blocking Chinese investment in infrastructure on national security grounds.</p>

<p>The 99-year lease of the commercial port to Landbridge was put under scrutiny in 2021 by the Australian government as it boosted foreign investment screening.</p>

<p>After it won election in 2022, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's Labor government launched a second review, involving defence, foreign affairs and security agencies.</p>

<p>The announcement the lease would not be varied or cancelled, comes ahead of Albanese's visit to Washington next week, and ahead of an expected visit to China this year.</p>

<p>Landbridge won a bidding process in 2015 to operate the port in a deal worth A$506 million ($390 million).</p>

<p>The awarding of the contract to Landbridge by the Northern Territory government came just a few years after the United States posted the first of a rotating group of U.S. Marines in Darwin.</p>

<p>The size and scope of U.S. military rotations through northern Australia, and the strategic importance of northern bases, has been boosted after an Australian defence review said in April China is undertaking the largest military buildup of any country since the end of World War Two.</p>

<p>Peter Dean, director of foreign policy and defence at the United States Studies Centre in Sydney, said it was likely the government would seek to build a second port in Darwin harbour or nearby for military use.</p>

<p>"Naval assessments have been saying they want a dedicated wharf on their own," he said.</p>

<p>This comes after Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly on Thursday (Oct 19) said “if we allow the norm of diplomatic immunity to be broken, no diplomats anywhere on the planet would be safe. So for this reason, we will not reciprocate.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Over reducing the diplomatic presence of Canada in the country, India has already clarified that there must be a "parity" in Canadian diplomatic presence in India.&nbsp;New Delhi earlier ordered Ottawa to reduce its bloated&nbsp;diplomatic presence in India to 21 from 62.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hardline conservative Jim Jordan told his fellow Republicans he will suspend his bid to serve as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and back Republican Patrick McHenry to fill the role on a temporary basis, lawmakers said on Thursday.</p>

<p>The House has been without a leader for more than two weeks, and Jordan has twice failed to secure the 217 votes needed to claim the speaker's gavel as he has faced opposition from Democrats and more than 20 of his fellow Republicans.</p>

<p>Republican hardliners expressed outrage at the deal. That group had exercised enormous influence in the House through the course of this year, bringing Washington to the edge of default and the brink of a government shutdown in a budget-cutting drive that has had limited success so far.</p>

<p>In that meeting, Jordan said he would not seek a third vote to win the post and instead will back a plan to empower McHenry to hold the post until January, according to several lawmakers.</p>

<p>McHenry, who has served as acting speaker since Kevin McCarthy's ouster on Oct. 3, said only, "I've no comment. We're having an active and vigorous conversation."</p>

<p>The House could vote on that proposal in the afternoon, said Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who said she does not support it.</p>

<p>"Our Republican voters worked very hard to give us our majority. And this conference is broken because Republicans worked with Democrats and put us here," she said.</p>

<p>It was not clear whether Jordan, who is backed by former President Donald Trump, would drop his leadership bid entirely or continue to try to build support among Republicans.</p>

<p>Unlike other leaders in Congress, Jordan built his profile as an uncompromising advocate for the party's right wing, clashing with Republicans and Democrats alike.</p>

<p>He encouraged government shutdowns in 2013 and 2018 and was a "significant player" in Trump's attempts to overturn Democrat Joe Biden's 2020 election win, according to a congressional investigation.
