<p>Israel's much-touted Iron Dome missile system failed to protect innocent Israelis after about 5,000 surprise air strikes by Hamas. Barnea, while citing government and military sources in the report, said, "Netanyahu is angry at the generals and blames them for what happened."&nbsp;</p>

"The prime minister, the defence minister and the IDF chief of staff are working in close and full cooperation, around the clock, to lead the State of Israel to a decisive victory over Hamas," the communique read.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"There is total and mutual trust between the prime minister, the defence minister and the IDF chief of staff; the unity of the goal is clear," it added. So is this a tacit agreement between Netanyahu and IDF to put up a good face for the world?&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Complex situation in Gaza Strip&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>While&nbsp;Hamas continues to hold captive many Israelis and foreign nationals, the situation remains complex and any reckless move by Israel could lead to further deterioration of the situation.</p>

<p>Gunmen who made an incursion into Israel took over 200 people hostages, including foreign nationals, and hence the situation remains sensitive.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Patrick Bettane, an intelligence specialist at Israel's International Institute for Counter-Terrorism (ICT) think tank, explained that as far as a ground offensive is concerned there remains a "disagreement".</p>

<p>"But the fact that there are hostages being held in the Gaza Strip complicates everything," he reportedly said, adding, "Israel is waiting to see how this problem can be resolved before it acts."</p>

<p>Akiva Eldar, an expert on Israeli politics, reportedly said that "after the emotions (were) aroused by this terrible massacre, Bibi (Netanyahu) and the generals are starting to think differently".</p>

<p>Israel also warned the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, with Israeli army spokesman Jonathan Conricus saying, "Hezbollah... is dragging Lebanon into a war that it will gain nothing from, but stands to lose a lot."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We will strike it with a force it cannot even imagine, and the significance for it and the state of Lebanon will be devastating," warned Netanyahu.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Political analyst Daniel Bensimon said, "Disagreement or not, it's a fact that Americans and the Europeans are coming to Israel to caress it with honeyed words with the aim of preventing a ground offensive."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The international community fears a ground operation would spark a chain reaction that could engulf the whole region, and maybe even further afield," he said, adding, "But in the end, they want to stop Israel from going into Gaza and prevent Iran from becoming involved through the Shiite Hezbollah movement, its proxy in Lebanon."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Japan's Supreme Court on Wednesday (Oct 25) in a landmark decision quashed a law that mandated sterilisation&nbsp;surgery to officially allow a gender change for a person on a family registry, media reports said.</p>

<p>Deeming the law "unconstitutional" the court's 15-judge bench gave the ruling in contrast to an earlier ruling in 2019 which had said that these requirements are "currently constitutional."</p>

<p>The case was brought on by an unidentified transgender woman below the age of 50 whose lawyers said that the mandates are in breach of their client’s constitutional right to lead a life without discrimination.</p>

<p>The lawyers also cited other reasons like physical pain and financial burden that transgenders go through to fulfill the requirements posed by the law.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kanae Doi, Japan Director at Human Rights Watch before the Wednesday (Oct 25) ruling reportedly said, “For anyone, having their gender legally recognised is an extremely fundamental human right, so being required to undergo sterilisation to enjoy that right is a significant violation of human rights."</p>

<h2><strong>Does the ruling undermine women's rights?</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>There is another set of arguments by lawmakers and women's rights groups who were against any changes in the law. According to them, the ruling would lead to confusion and will undermine women’s rights.</p>

<p>A man suspected of being involved in the killing of a Swiss woman has been arrested by police in the Indian capital of Delhi, media reports said citing sources.&nbsp;Her lifeless body was discovered near the wall of a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) school in the Tilak Nagar neighbourhood of the national capital following which the arrest was made on Saturday (Oct&nbsp;21).</p>

<p>The accused individual has been identified as Gurpreet. His arrest was based on a combination of technical and manual intelligence. It followed extensive efforts by multiple Delhi Police teams. The victim was a Swiss national from Zurich.</p>

<p>According to information from police sources cited by media reports, the suspect had met the woman in Switzerland, and they had been in contact for approximately 8 to 10 days.</p>

<p>Once a foul odour emanated from the vehicle, he discarded the victim's body on the roadside and fled the scene.</p>

<p>“Accused Gurpreet arrested in the case had met the woman in Switzerland. He tied the hands and legs of the foreigner woman and murdered her. The accused bought an old car and after murdering her put the body in the same car. After foul smell started coming from the car, he dumped the body on the roadside and escaped,” sources reportedly said.</p>

<h2><strong>Cash recovery</strong></h2>

<p>In addition to the arrest, a substantial sum of nearly $240k was also seized from the accused.</p>

<p>Vichitra Veer, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for the Western region, reportedly provided details about the case. He mentioned that the suspect was apprehended in Janakpuri, and during the initial stages of the investigation, the suspect had been uncooperative.</p>

<p>The DCP explained that a call was received by the Tilak Nagar police station between 8:45 am and 9 am, prompting specialised teams to respond.</p>

<p>The situation initially appeared to be a murder case, and a formal case was registered under sections 302 and 201.&nbsp;</p>

'He tied her hands and legs': Delhi man arrested for brutal murder of Swiss woman

<p>Nawaz Sharif, a seasoned politician, is now back in Pakistan and hinted at mending the country’s ties with India, saying “We can’t progress under conflict with the neighbours.” With this comes the question of whether he possesses the clout to resolve the long-standing Kashmir issue with India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Anil Wadhwa, the former Secretary (East) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), told WION that the three-time Pakistani prime minister may be the “best bet”. Former envoy Wadhwa said, “At the moment, Nawaz Sharif will no doubt concentrate on returning back as prime minister and winning the elections for Pakistan Muslim League.”</p>

<p>However, he noted that “any talk of normalisation in the India relationship during the election campaign will not go down well with the hardliners and the voters.”</p>

<p>During his address to the nation on Saturday (Oct 21) evening, the former PM vouched to tackle the country’s economic crisis. But there was also an unvoiced appeal to people to vote for the PML-N leadership in next year’s general elections.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ambassador Wadhwa explained, “Nawaz Sharif has the best track record in trying to work towards a rapprochement with India but he was undone by the military on all such occasions. General Pervez Musharraf in fact kept him in the dark over Kargil. The army has controlled him throughout like all other elected representatives. <p>For any meaningful progress on the Kashmir issue, Wadhwa said, “Sharif needs to move decisively after coming to power on shutting down training camps and working with the army to maintain the ceasefire along the LoC.”</p>

<p>“Pakistan’s economic situation offers a good alibi to work towards a sustainable ceasefire and peace along the LoC,” he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Canada's Conservative Party leader and main rival to Justin Trudeau in the upcoming elections, Pierre Poilievre, has opened salvos at the Canadian prime minister&nbsp;stating that he has made himself a "laughing stock" in India. This comes after Trudeau and Canada's foreign minister gave a sequence of unwelcomed remarks accusing India of breaking international norms shortly after 41 Canadian diplomats left India following the diplomatic row over Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar's killing.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Past&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Nawaz Sharif entered into politics in the 1980s when he joined the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) and was appointed as the Finance Minister of Punjab in 1981 by former President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 1985, Nawaz Sharif was elected as the Chief Minister of Punjab, Pakistan's most populous province. This is his bastion where he still holds significant clout. Husain Haqqani, former Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/is-nawaz-sharifs-return-a-deal-with-pakistan-military-establishment-649672">told WION</a>, "He has led PML-N in winning three elections and still retains support in Punjab."</p>

<p>In 2017, he was disqualified from office by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif's health concerns led to his departure for London in 2019, where he received medical treatment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Despite his absence from Pakistan, he continued to wield significant influence within the PML-N and on the nation's politics.</p>

<p>Nawaz Sharif had&nbsp;picked Asim Munir as Pakistan's Army Chief, and a political analyst in his article for an Indian think tank wrote - "The enemy’s enemy is a friend," leaving food for thought.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Former PM Shehbaz Sharif reportedly said that Army Chief Gen Asim Munir was removed as the head of ISI in 2019 by Imran Khan because the spy chief had confronted him with proof of corruption involving his wife.</p>

<p>He is also facing charges of violating the Official Secrets Act by disclosing a secret diplomatic cable (cipher case) sent by the country's embassy in Washington in March last year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The PML-N's performance in the next general elections will be crucial for Sharif. The party will need to win over the supporters of Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The city has been the centre of intense fighting in recent weeks as each side struggles to advance along the frontlines. Ukraine's general staff said on Friday that Russia had stepped up its military assault on Avdiivka in an ongoing bid to encircle and capture it.</p>

<p>It lies just 15 kilometres (nine miles) from Moscow-held city of Donetsk, capital of the Donetsk region that Russia said last September it was annexing.</p>
