<p>Brutal gang violence, fuel shortages and soaring food commodity prices have brought the capital city of Port-au-Prince in Haiti to a halt. According to United Nations estimates, approximately 234 people have lost their lives or got hurt in the violence, with new reports of sexual violence also coming to light.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to deputy mayor Jean Hislain Frederick, the violence erupted in the Cite Soleil neighbourhood of the city last week (Thursday) when two rival gangs engaged in a bloody battle amongst themselves. Soon, the violence spread around and the entire city was in flames in no time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the humanitarian organisation named Medecins Sans Frontieres, more colloquially known as Doctors Without Borders, thousands of people are trapped without drinking water, food or medical care. The aid organisation has been pleading with the armed groups to spare civilians. The aid outfit is also requesting the gangs&nbsp;to let them reach the isolated neighbourhood of Brooklyn that has been completely disconnected from the mainstream.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile,&nbsp;Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for&nbsp;UN Human Rights Office was quoted as saying, “Most of the victims were not directly involved in gangs and were directly targeted by gang elements. We have also received new reports of sexual violence,”&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Minister of State for IT and electronics Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated that the government was seriously considering formulating new rules to correct the anomaly of the situation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;“The market power on digital advertising that is currently being exercised by the Big Tech majors, which places Indian media companies at a position of disadvantage, is an issue that is seriously being examined in the context of new legalisations and rules,” the minister was quoted as saying by TOI.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Facebook started as a platform that connected people. However, it has now metamorphosed into a space for sharing news and other media content. Similarly, Google is not just a search engine anymore, albeit, it has branched out to become a major platform for sharing news.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Digital News Publishers’ Association (DNPA), more than 50 per cent of the traffic on news websites is routed through Google. And Google, akin to its ad-revenue policies, is opaque about the algorithms that push a particular news channel website up on the list.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the Indian government mulls bringing the legislation, countries around the globe have already started to tighten the bolts. Reportedly, Australia and France have already brought and enacted legislation that binds Google and other tech platforms to divide their share of the pie with local news creators. Canada and United Kingdom are also attempting to bring similar legislation.&nbsp;</p>

FARC dissident leader Ivan Mordisco, alongwith nine others neutralised by Colombian forces

<p>Steve Martin, a Metropolitan police officer has been found guilty of punching a teenager black child and sacked. Reportedly, Martin, in February last year, whilst serving in the firearms command had punched and verbally assaulted a 15-year-old kid who was not resisting the arrest in an alleged knifepoint robbery case.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Following our independent investigation, we found a case to answer on the basis that the force used appeared to exceed what was required in the circumstances as the boy had given himself up and was not resisting,” stated Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in its investigation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reportedly, IOPC submitted ample evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, including the body-cam footage which exposed the police constable for breaching professional standards for use of force and authority. Afterwards, he was charged with common assault and pleaded guilty at the Magistrates' Cort in Westminster, earlier this year in January.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As for the incident, on February 28, 2021, the Police were looking for three youths in East London in connection to a knifepoint robbery case. The black kid along with two other male teenagers was arrested by Martin and charged, only for the case to be discontinued later&nbsp;.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This meeting came on the same day as Pacific Island Forum leaders met and decided to resolve the geopolitical issues within 'the family'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As mentioned earlier, China is not a part of the Pacific Island Forum but it is among the 20 dialogue partners that also include the USA. Beijing might have been antagonized as the USA and its Vice President Kamala Harris were allowed to address the forum via video conferencing, a day earlier (Wednesday). However, no such courtesy was extended to the Chinese.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Frank Bainimarama, the Forum chair and Fiji prime minister in his opening remarks had taken a veiled potshot at China. Reportedly, Frank stated that the region had been caught in a crossfire of 'three deadly C's: Covid, climate and conflict'. Both Covid and conflict have a close connection with China and it must have irked the Chinese leaders who had also sent their alleged spies to the meet.</p>

<p>Reportedly, two Chinese attaches were identified by the journalists during the forum. When confronted, one was identified as a Chinese embassy official. Both were later escorted out of the forum meeting.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Goldman Sachs has only added to the gloom by remarking that the metal is expected to slip below the $6,700 mark in the coming three months as China continues to remain sluggish in its economic recovery.&nbsp;</p>
