"We had never heard from him -– no big interview, no interesting speech, no articles or paper, just someone who was like an ordinary politician," he told AFP. 
Chapo beat out three other contenders after rival factions in Frelimo could not come to an agreement following two days of intense debates within its central committee.
"They chose Chapo to be able to influence him. He will be very supervised," said an expert on condition of anonymity.
This influence could particularly be used to appoint ministers in the key positions of defence, finance and natural resources, said Nhamirre.
A fresh face meant to capture the support of disenchanted youth, Chapo was likely the pick of former Mozambican presidents Armando Guebuza and Joaquim Chissano, and not so much his predecessor Nyusi, analysts say. 
"There's not a lot of love between Chapo and Nyusi," Maputo-based political and security risk analyst Johann Smith told AFP.

Chapo's time there meant "at least he understood how to deal with multinational companies at a district level, having to solve problems of disputes between the local companies," Nhamirre said.
The incoming president made thwarting attacks in Cabo Delgado one of his campaign promises. 
"We will continue to work so Mozambique stays a country of peace, including in Cabo Delgado," he said at the final rally. "We want to continue fighting against terrorism."
Chapo, appointed governor of the southern province of Inhambane in 2016, also promised the construction of schools and hospitals and a more robust economy. He presented himself as the candidate of unity, promising to "work with every layer of society, youth, women, men and veterans."

Sections of two telecom cables were cut on November 17 and 18 in Swedish territorial waters. Suspicions have been directed at the Yi Peng 3, which according to ship tracking sites had sailed over the cables around the time they were cut.
The Yi Peng 3 had been anchored in the international waters of the Kattegat Strait between Sweden and Denmark.
Ship tracking site Vesselfinder showed the Yi Peng 3 heading north out of the strait on Saturday.

Beijing on Monday confirmed the ship had left "to ensure the physical and mental well-being of the crew".
"The shipowner company, after a comprehensive evaluation and consultation with relevant parties, decided to resume operations," foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said.
"China has notified all relevant countries in advance," Mao said.
"China is willing to maintain communication and cooperation with the countries involved to advance the follow-up handling of the incident," she added.
<h2>Observers</h2>
However, Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard also noted Monday that Swedish prosecutors had not been allowed to conduct an investigation.
"Swedish police have been on board as observers in connection with the Chinese investigation... At the same time, I note that China has not heeded our request for the prosecutor to conduct an investigation on board," Stenergard said in a statement to AFP.
On Thursday, authorities from Sweden, Germany, and Finland were invited aboard as observers for an investigation led by China.
A Danish representative also accompanied the group, as the country had served a "facilitating role" by hosting meetings between the countries earlier in the week, its Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen had said.
Prosecutor Henrik Soderman told AFP that no measures had been taken on board the ship as part of the Swedish judicial probe, including questioning crew members or technical investigations.
The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (SHK) also took part in the visit and were able to make observations and speak to crew members.

The SHK had three representatives on board, and Alhberk said they were working on "collating the material and see what conclusions could be drawn."
Soderman said that he was not yet aware of the details of the information gathered by the SHK.
<h2>'We have been clear with China'</h2>
"Our request that Swedish prosecutors, together with the police and others, be allowed to take certain investigative measures within the framework of the investigation on board remains. We have been clear with China on this," Stenergard said.
Late last month, Sweden requested China's cooperation in the investigation, but Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stressed that there was no "accusation" of any sort.
European officials have said they suspect sabotage linked to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The Kremlin has rejected the comments as "absurd" and "laughable".
Early on November 17, the Arelion cable running from the Swedish island of Gotland to Lithuania was damaged.
The next day, the C-Lion 1 submarine cable connecting Helsinki and the German port of Rostock was cut south of Sweden's Oland island, around 700 kilometres (435 miles) from Helsinki.
Tensions have mounted around the Baltic Sea since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
In September 2022, a series of underwater blasts ruptured the Nord Stream pipelines that carried Russian gas to Europe, the cause of which has yet to be determined.
In October 2023, an undersea gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia was shut down after it was damaged by the anchor of a Chinese cargo ship.

CBS reported that the findings were part of a long-running probe by the House Ethics Committee into Gaetz, 42. The probe concluded that he violated multiple state laws related to sexual misconduct while in office.

Further, the ethics committee pointed out it received a testimony that during a party in 2017, Gaetz had sex with a minor aged 17 at that time. The minor was identified as "Victim A."

Auldin Maxwell meticulously stacked 1,840 Jenga blocks on one block in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. The structure measured 43 inches high, 11 inches wide, and 11 inches deep, perfectly balanced over one small vertical block. 
Jenga is a classic block-stacking game, in which the players take turns to remove a block from the tower and place it over the top. The game is enjoyed by many across the world.

US President-elect Donald Trump has once again sparked controversy by suggesting that the United States should buy and take control of Greenland, calling it an "absolute necessity" for national security.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, "For purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity." Greenland, while geographically part of North America, is an autonomous territory under the Kingdom of Denmark.
Responding to Trump's comments Greenland’s prime minister, Múte Egede said, “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.”

This is not the first time Trump has shown interest in buying Greenland. During his first term as president, he suggested the idea of purchasing the island and even cancelled a state visit to Denmark after Danish officials dismissed the proposal.
At the time, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said, “Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland. I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously,” during a visit to the island in 2019.
The United States already maintains a presence in Greenland through the Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base) on the island’s northwest coast. The US has considered acquiring Greenland on multiple occasions since 1867.
Trump’s recent comments about Greenland come after another controversial demand, where he called on Panamanian authorities to lower transit fees for US ships using the Panama Canal or return control of the canal to the United States.

In response to Trump’s comments, Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino posted on social media platform X, “I want to express precisely that every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent area belong to Panama, and will continue to.”
Mulino added, “The sovereignty and independence of our country are not negotiable. Every Panamanian, here or anywhere in the world, carries it in their heart, and it is part of our history of struggle and irreversible conquest.”
