Donald Trump's commerce secretary nominee told his US Senate confirmation hearing Wednesday he favours "across-the-board" tariffs targeting countries rather than products, while signalling a hawkish China stance.
"We can use tariffs to create reciprocity, fairness and respect," said Howard Lutnick, a close Trump ally and billionaire CEO of Wall Street firm Cantor Fitzgerald.

In announcing his nomination last year, Trump said Lutnick would lead the world's biggest economy's tariff and trade agenda, with additional direct responsibility for the US Trade Representative's office.
Asked about the impact of duties on prices, Lutnick conceded certain products' costs may rise. He charged that "it is nonsense" however that they would cause widespread inflation.
Lutnick vowed to work to understand the impact of retaliatory tariffs on US agriculture and manufacturing.

The announcements came during a conference on "the victory of the Syrian revolution" that was also attended by Sharaa, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and the heads of armed factions.
Abdel Ghani also announced the dissolution of all armed groups involved in Assad's ouster, as well as the former government's army and security agencies.
"All military factions and political and civil revolutionary bodies are dissolved and integrated into state institutions", SANA reported Abdel Ghani as saying.

Last month, he said it could take four years before elections could be held, and up to three years to rewrite the country's constitution.
Authorities had previously spoken of a national dialogue conference that would bring together Syrians of all political stripes, but SANA made no mention of any such conference on Wednesday.
Civil war broke out in Syria after Assad suppressed peaceful anti-government protests in 2011. The conflict has killed more than 500,000 people and displaced millions more.
HTS, rooted in Syria's Al-Qaeda branch, is proscribed as a terrorist organisation by many governments including the United States, though it has recently sought to moderate its rhetoric and vowed to protect Syria's religious and ethnic minorities.

"There's substantial evidence that what DeepSeek did here is they distilled the knowledge out of OpenAI's models," Sacks said.

"I didn't want to look back with regret when I'm old, so I decided to go for it," Kao Meng-shun said from Fusing Temple in Yunlin County, in the central-west of Taiwan. &nbsp;
In Bangkok, throngs of locals and tourists made their way to Wat Mangkon Kamalawat, the capital's most revered Chinese temple.
Built in 1871 by immigrants from southern China, the temple marks its 154th anniversary this year and remains a key worshipping site for the Thai-Chinese community.
Sasakorn Udomrat, 56, has been coming to the temple for eight consecutive years.
"I have many Thai-Chinese friends who say this temple is very sacred," she said. "I don't ask for anything in particular, just good health."&nbsp;
Another worshipper Nawarat Yaowanin, 42, told AFP: "According to the Chinese calendar, it's a brewing year for me," she said.
"I came here to pay my respects and hope to ward off bad luck."&nbsp;

Traffic authorities warned it could take more than seven hours on Tuesday to drive from Seoul to the port city of Busan, a journey that typically takes around four hours.
Many others opted to spend the break abroad. The operator of Incheon International Airport announced that it expected more than 2.1 million overseas-bound passengers from January 24 to February 2.
"This is projected to be the highest average daily passenger count during the Lunar New Year holiday since the airport opened (in 2001)," the operator said in a statement.

"Before, people didn't even dare to ask -- they knew what awaited them," he told AFP.
Elsewhere, the owner of a high-profile publishing house said that since the 1980s, he had stopped printing all political works except some "very general (essays) on political thinking that did not deal with a particular region or country".
Even so, Assad's "security services used to call us in to ask about our work and our sales -- who came to see us, what they bought, what people were asking for", he told AFP, requesting anonymity.
He said security services were often "uncultured" when it came to literature, recalling an investigator who insisted he wanted to question Ibn Taymiyya, a Sunni Muslim theologian who died in the 14th century.

Now, they are in "high demand", he said, adding that his new customers include Damascus residents and Syrians who have returned from abroad or visited from former rebel bastions in the country's north.
Suruji said that although he learnt to tell a real student from an informant, a dozen security agents went through his bookshop from top to bottom in 2010, confiscating "more than 600 books".
Mustafa al-Kani, 25, a student of Islamic theology, came to check the price of a collection of Sayyed Qotb's works.
"During the revolution, we were afraid of looking for certain books. We couldn't have them in our possession, we used to read them online," he said.
"Just publishing a quote from Sayyed Qotb could get you thrown into jail," he added.

Books banned under Assad make it to Damascus shops' shelves

The White House on Wednesday (Jan 29) announced the details of the "deferred resignation" offer made by US President Donald Trump's administration, for the federal employees that allows them to resign with pay.&nbsp;
In a move to end work-from-home practices, Trump's administration is expecting up to 10 per cent of federal employees to take the offer by September.&nbsp;
The employees can decide by February 6 whether they want to participate in a "deferred resignation programme".&nbsp;
