Iran warns of economic fallout from fresh attacks
Earlier on Wednesday, Araghchi warned that another Israeli-led military attack could have serious consequences for international energy markets. “Devastating impact on int'l markets of any Israel-instigated military misadventure in Persian Gulf region remains major concern for both gas suppliers and consumers,” he wrote on X, referring to discussions at the Gas Exporting Countries Forum summit in Moscow. The warning came as tensions remained high between Iran and Israel. Under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel has vowed to topple Iran’s government. The two countries have engaged in direct warfare for the first time in their history after decades of hostility. The conflict began in February following US and Israeli strikes on Iran, and renewed attacks remain a concern as regional tensions continue. Also Read: French President Macron, his wife face setback in defamation case against US influencer
European gas prices cross €100
European natural gas prices climbed above €100 per megawatt-hour on Wednesday, reaching their highest level since 2022. The increase was driven by concerns over the Middle East conflict and the need to replenish gas reserves ahead of winter. At around 1455 GMT, Dutch TTF futures, the benchmark for European gas prices, rose by more than 4 per cent to €100.45 per megawatt-hour. Prices remain well below the peak of €345 per megawatt-hour recorded in March 2022 during the energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The latest rise reflects concerns that the United States could launch fresh strikes against Iran after next week’s midterm elections, potentially prompting Tehran to retaliate against energy infrastructure across the Gulf. Meanwhile, Israel’s election has added to uncertainty over the future course of the regional conflict, with voters weighing in on Netanyahu’s right-wing government amid threats of renewed military action.

Kyiv and Western governments reject this argument, describing the war as an attempt by Putin to seize Ukrainian territory. “Russia wants this meeting more than anyone,” Zelensky said, warning against giving Moscow “another major diplomatic advantage”. His comments come ahead of planned talks between Russian and Ukrainian representatives and US envoys in the United Arab Emirates next month. The meeting aims to revive efforts to end the war, although a date has not yet been confirmed. Zelensky said Ukraine wanted the Abu Dhabi talks to take place before the proposed three-way summit. What was the Yalta Conference of 1945? The Yalta Conference took place from February 4 to 11, 1945, as World War II in Europe approached its end. US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin met in Yalta, Crimea, to discuss the defeat of Nazi Germany and the post-war international order. The leaders agreed on plans to divide Germany and Berlin into four occupation zones after the war. They also discussed the structure of the proposed United Nations, including the Security Council's veto system, and secured a commitment from the Soviet Union to enter the war against Japan after Germany's defeat. The conference became a significant moment in shaping the post-war order, making it a historical reference point for concerns about major powers negotiating the future of other countries.

Zelensky has warned that a potential summit between Putin, Trump and Xi could reshape global influence at Ukraine's expense.

Iran has rejected a proposal presented by Qatar to end the war with the US. The United States and Japan are conducting one of their largest military exercises in the Pacific, deploying tens of thousands of troops, warships, aircraft and advanced missile systems as China's military presence expands across the region. Speaking exclusively to WION's Defence Pulse, Colonel Rich Outzen, a former US Army officer and State Department adviser, said the exercises must demonstrate genuine combat readiness if they are to deter a future conflict.
Preparing for War to Prevent It
The Keen Sword 27 exercise, running from October 19 to 29, involves approximately 57,000 personnel, 40 warships and 260 aircraft. The Philippines is participating for the first time, alongside several other partner nations. Asked whether such exercises were beginning to resemble preparations for war, Outzen responded: “I would hope that they start to look like preparations for war immediately.” He explained that military preparedness was essential to convincing Beijing that attempting to seize Taiwan by force would carry unacceptable costs. According to Outzen, the exercises demonstrate that Japan, the Philippines and other regional partners are prepared to resist forcible changes to the status quo.

American Missiles Across the Pacific
US Marines have deployed NMESIS mobile anti-ship missile systems to Japan's southwestern islands, alongside counter-drone air defence capabilities. Outzen emphasised that modern warfare requires dispersed, mobile missile systems rather than concentrated military installations vulnerable to drone and missile attacks. He said the real challenge was integrating different weapons, command structures and military doctrines into a coordinated fighting force. Also Read: ‘Ballot papers used, guess how many seats Congress won?’ PM Modi takes dig after party draws blank in MLC polls
China's Expanding Military Reach
China's Liaoning aircraft carrier strike group has also operated in the western Pacific, while Japanese authorities have reported Chinese reconnaissance activity near their southwestern islands. Outzen cautioned against describing the growing US-Japan-Philippines cooperation as a formal military front against China. “The political task is deterrence,” he said, explaining that Washington's objective was to discourage military aggression against Taiwan and its treaty allies. Outzen argued that China's expanding naval capabilities reflected its ambition to become a global military power by 2049. However, he rejected the idea of an inevitable US-China confrontation, describing the emerging international order as increasingly multipolar, with India also becoming a significant global power. For Washington, he said, the strategic challenge was ensuring China's expanding influence did not threaten American allies.

Former US Army officer Rich Outzen says US-Japan military exercises must demonstrate combat readiness to deter Chinese aggression against Taiwan and reassure regional allies.

Rescue teams search for survivors
Emergency vehicles rushed to the site as helicopters hovered overhead during the search for survivors. Images from the area showed twisted metal and badly damaged coaches.Castilla-La Mancha regional leader Emiliano Garcia-Page said more victims could be found as rescue teams had yet to reach the lower sections of the carriages.“It has not yet been possible to reach the bottom of the carriages,” he told reporters.Spain’s state railway operator Renfe confirmed that the main high-speed route connecting Madrid with southern Spain had been suspended following the accident involving one of its services and a train operated by private company Iryo.
Rail safety faces renewed scrutiny
The latest collision has brought renewed attention to railway safety in Spain, which suffered another deadly high-speed train crash in January. That accident, near Adamuz in southern Spain, killed 46 people and raised questions about the safety of the country’s rail network.Wednesday’s crash also comes at a politically sensitive time for Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who faced criticism following the earlier disaster.Sanchez said he was “shocked” by the latest accident and offered “my love, solidarity and support to all the victims and their families” in a post on X. He cancelled his participation in a Madrid summit on obesity, while his Socialist party suspended campaign activities.European leaders also expressed condolences, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen saying, “Europe mourns” with the victims following the “devastating news”.The crash occurred on the Madrid-Seville corridor, Spain’s first high-speed rail line, which opened in 1992. The route is also one of the busiest in the country.

Around 200 passengers who had signed up to travel the world aboard a residential cruise ship were forced to leave the vessel in Cambodia after its operator ran into financial trouble, disrupting plans for those who had paid to make life at sea their permanent home. The US-based company Villa Vie Residences announced on Tuesday (Oct 27) that it had “suspended operations in Cambodia”, citing a sharp rise in fuel expenses following the Iran war. Passengers reportedly received just seven hours to pack their belongings and disembark during a scheduled stop in Sihanoukville.
Seven hours to leave their floating homes
According to Long Dimanche, deputy governor of Cambodia’s Preah Sihanouk province, the Bahamas-flagged Odyssey arrived from Thailand on October 23 with 203 guests and 156 crew members. The ship was scheduled to continue to Vietnam.“The sudden order to disembark has left many retirees and remote workers homeless thousands of miles from their home countries,” Dimanche said. While some passengers managed to book flights out of Cambodia, others remained in the port city, he added. The vessel was expected to refuel before departing on October 31.The 200-metre-long ship began its continuous voyage from Northern Ireland in October 2024. Its business model allowed customers to purchase or rent cabins, offering an alternative to conventional retirement and long-term travel. Some residents reportedly sold their possessions to fund their new lives aboard the vessel.
‘Cascade of problems’ behind the crisis
Passenger and cruise blogger Randy Cassingham described the disembarkation as the culmination of a “cascade of problems”.In a post titled “Abandon Ship!”, he said the vessel's Belfast departure had been delayed by four months. The ship also struggled to reach its planned capacity of 650 residents, with numbers peaking at around 350, he wrote.Cassingham said the cruise was affordable rather than “luxury”, but alleged that the company eventually began “begging for money”. He also accused Villa Vie Residences of doing “absolutely nothing to help” passengers left stranded.
Fuel costs put pressure on operations
Villa Vie Residences said monthly fuel expenses per cabin had risen from an average of $1,800 to an estimated $6,000-$8,000 in parts of Asia.“The company cannot simply pass increases of that scale on to residents, and the resulting shortfall has placed its current operating model under unsustainable financial pressure,” the operator said. The company added that it was coordinating disembarkation and seeking temporary accommodation for affected residents.“Villa Vie Residences recognises that this is a difficult and disruptive period for residents, crew members, and employees, and is working to support those affected as plans develop,” it said.

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh raised New Delhi’s longstanding objections to major US sustainment and modernisation packages for the Pakistan Air Force’s F-16 fleet during a bilateral meeting with US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on the sidelines of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) in Cebu, Philippines, on 28 October 2026.The December 2025 package, notified by the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency and valued at $686 million, is intended to extend the operational life of Pakistan’s F-16s. It includes avionics upgrades, cryptographic systems and related software and sustainment support. The India-US defence relationship has deepened in recent years through successive framework agreements, even as New Delhi has repeatedly flagged concerns over US military support packages for Pakistan, which India views as potentially usable against it rather than solely for counter-terrorism purposes.Pakistan has used US-supplied F-16 fighters in conflicts against India, including during the 2019 post-Balakot aerial engagement, according to Indian assessments.Indian side also warned that advanced US technology support risked falling into the hands of third parties. This comes in the backdrop of Pakistan’s close military cooperation with China. The meeting also served as an opportunity to review progress under the India-US Major Defence Partnership and the 10-year Defence Framework signed in 2025. Both sides noted advances in foundational security agreements and discussed steps to accelerate operational readiness, technology sharing and defence industrial integration. They reviewed military-to-military exchanges, maritime security cooperation and efforts to integrate defence supply chains.A central element of the talks was regional security and the fight against cross-border terrorism.
Florida has no laws on the issue
Local reports suggest that Miller and her husband are in the process of getting divorced. The case has triggered a lot of chatter about whether the mother should have been arrested. Florida laws do not state the age at which children can be left alone at home. Parents can decide the right age to do so. However, a recommendation by the state agency overseeing children's welfare says this should not happen before they turn 12.

Retail media has a structural problem that its growth rate keeps outrunning. The network sells the advertising, and the network also reports how well it performed. That is not necessarily dishonest, and it does not require anyone to behave badly. It only requires the default measurement to be attribution, which credits the network whenever an exposed household later buys, whether or not the advertising had anything to do with it. Retail media sits closest to the purchase, so it captures the most of that already-arriving demand, and reports it as return.Suneel Dasika's response was to build the control group into the network itself. The approach is structurally simple and organisationally difficult. A randomised four percent slice of the addressable first-party audience is carved out and made permanent, assigned at customer level by hashed identifier, re-randomised only once a year, and excluded upstream in the audience-build layer so that no campaign can target into it even by accident. The consequence is that every campaign on the network inherits a valid control group automatically. No advertiser has to be persuaded to give up reach, no bespoke study has to be designed, and nobody has to justify sacrificing revenue on a particular campaign to learn something about it. Incrementality stops being a project and becomes a property of the infrastructure. What that changed is best expressed as coverage. Lift measurement had previously reached roughly five percent of eligible campaigns, limited to a handful of managed accounts each year by the design and approval cycle each study required. With the holdout standing permanently, coverage became close to universal, at a fully amortised cost of well under one percent of network revenue, absorbed centrally as what Dasika describes as a measurement tax rather than billed to advertisers. The pilot ran with five advertisers chosen for spend volume, category diversity and enough weekly conversion density to reach significance inside a four-week flight. Each received a weekly exposed-versus-withheld read on incremental sales, new-to-brand rate and lift percentage, presented alongside their existing attributed return rather than instead of it.In all five cases, measured lift came in materially below attributed return."Which was the point," Dasika says. The predictable expectation is that advertisers shown a smaller number spend less. All five expanded their investment. Two reallocated budget toward the tactics that survived the comparison, and the holdout became the default reporting layer for those accounts within two quarters. He has seen the pattern before, in an earlier productised incrementality effort that reached eighty percent adoption among top-tier advertisers and lifted their spend by twenty percent. The reason is worth sitting with, because it inverts the usual assumption about measurement transparency. An advertiser who cannot tell which part of a reported return is real has to discount the whole number. An advertiser who can separate genuine lift from captured demand can confidently invest behind the part that works. Precision about what is not working turns out to be what unlocks budget for what is.Presenting the honest number alongside the attributed one, rather than replacing it, also reframed the conversation from defending a figure to calibrating it.Where Dasika's account becomes genuinely unusual is in what he volunteers about the method's limits, at length and without being asked. The control group is randomised, but it is not clean. Withheld households still encounter the brand through organic search, store visits, competitor retail media and the advertiser's own upper-funnel advertising, so the comparison estimates lift against a control contaminated by everything happening outside the network's walls. Match rates, identity resolution and cross-device fragmentation introduce further slippage. At small spend levels, the confidence interval is wide enough to swallow the effect entirely. His team chose to publish that uncertainty rather than smooth it: stating the bounds, suppressing underpowered reads instead of reporting them, and framing every estimate as a conservative floor on true incremental value rather than a point estimate."Advertisers trusted a defensible range more than they trusted a precise number nobody could defend," he says. His view is that the trust, rather than the methodology, is what actually unlocked the incremental budget. He is equally direct about what makes this hard to operate, and the failure modes he lists are mostly organisational.Withholding four percent of addressable reach shows up immediately as lost impressions and reduced delivery, which caps what a sales team can promise. That resistance is structural, so the holdout has to be funded centrally as infrastructure and can never appear as a line item an account team is able to opt out of.The exclusion also has to hold across every path an activation can take. Offsite platforms, third-party demand partners, agency-managed buys and clean-room activations each represent a route by which a withheld household can be reached anyway, and every new integration is a fresh place the holdout can break silently.Identity is the quiet risk. A customer-level assignment is only as durable as the identity graph beneath it, and re-hashing, identifier churn and imperfect matching erode the group over time. Dasika's phrasing is the sharpest warning in his account: a control that quietly degrades produces confidently wrong lift numbers. And at four percent, most campaigns will never clear significance at all, which requires documented minimum thresholds for spend, flight length and conversions, plus the discipline to tell a smaller advertiser that they do not get a number yet. That last one is the real test of whether a measurement system is honest. Every incentive points toward producing a number, because a number is what the advertiser is asking for. Declining to supply one is harder than supplying a bad one, and considerably less popular.

"Advertisers trusted a defensible range more than they trusted a precise number nobody could defend," he says. His view is that the trust, rather than the methodology, is what actually unlocked the incremental budget.

Retail media sits closest to the purchase, so it captures the most of that already-arriving demand, and reports it as return. Suneel Dasika's response was to build the control group into the network itself. The Delhi High Court on Wednesday dismissed a public interest litigation challenging the Centre’s decision to increase passport issuance and renewal fees, observing that a hike of around 67% over 14 years could not be considered unreasonable. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre and Justice Sanjay Sharma said the determination of passport fees falls within the government’s policy domain and that judicial intervention is unwarranted unless the charges are found to be unreasonably exorbitant. “As long as such fees, which are levied towards the renewal of a passport or for processing of a passport, are not found to be unreasonably exorbitant, the Court is not required to interfere with such policies,” the bench observed.
