Germany arrests two 'Russian spies' allegedly plotting sabotage attacks

Two individuals with dual German-Russian citizenship were arrested in Germany on Thursday (April 18). They are accused of planning sabotage attacks aimed at undermining military assistance for Ukraine, as per the German federal prosecutor's office.
Authorities have searched the homes and workplaces of the two arrested suspects, who are accused of working for a foreign secret service, said the prosecutor's office in a statement.
One of the suspects, identified as Dieter S, had since October 2023 discussed possible plots with a person linked to the Russian secret service, the statement further said and added, Dieter Shad been prepared to carry out bomb attacks on military facilities, including those operated by US forces.
The Russian and USembassies in Berlin did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
"The actions were intended in particular to undermine the military support provided by Germany to Ukraine against the Russian war of aggression," the prosecutors'statement said.

"Our security authorities have prevented possible explosive attacks that were intended to target and undermine our military assistance to Ukraine," Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said.
"It is a particularly serious case of alleged spy activity for (President Vladimir) Putin's criminal regime."
The Kremlin said it had no information about the arrests and the Russian embassy in Berlin said it had not been officially notified. The U.S. embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The prosecutors suspect Dieter S., whose last name has not been disclosed due to German privacy laws, was a fighter for Russian-backed forces in eastern Ukraine from Dec2014 to Sept2016 in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic.
He is in possession of a firearm, prosecutors said.
