Taiwan remains the most sensitive and dangerous issue in relations between the United States and China. Beijing continues to push for what it calls “reunification” with the island, while many people in Taiwan increasingly identify separately from mainland China. At the same time, Washington officially follows the “One China” policy but maintains close unofficial ties with Taiwan, making the island a major geopolitical flashpoint with global consequences.
