U.S. backs Israel on settlements, angering Palestinians and clouding peace process

The United States on Monday (November 19) effectively backed Israel's right to build Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank by abandoning its four-decade-old position that they were "inconsistent with international law," in a statement that on Tuesday (November 19) drew praise from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and condemnation from Palestinians.
