Europe was recently the hardest hit by COVID-19 across the globe. Over time, the rate of infection seems to have slowed down.

With strict lockdowns and rigorous testing, the numbers seem to have been brought under control.

However, public anger against lockdown has turned into protests across the globe, based on a pattern which started appearing across the United States as people demanded reopening of the economy.

For the first time since the lockdown began, public support for it has fallen below 50 per cent in France, a poll by the Huffington Post has shown.

The French government intends to phase out the reopening process in the country, starting May 11. The proposals will be presented by the government to the Assemblee Nationale and then put forth for voting.

According to the new survey, only 43 per cent of the population now supports the strict enforcement of lockdown. Last week, the lockdown had the support of the majority, with over 51 per cent of the population in its favour. The strict confinement measures in place refer to a complete shutdown of industry and all non-essential services including schools and businesses without which the majority of the population can survive.

The survey further shed light on what the citizens expect from the government. 82 per cent of them expect the government to provide free masks to the general population, and more than three quarters want the blanket ban on cultural and sports gatherings to continue.

The public is also in line with the government’s demands to ensure that people work from home. However, school teachers believe that they are being used to improve the general population’s immunity against the virus.

The government has repeatedly asserted the risk of reopening schools and universities too early, and intends to do it in a “progressive and careful” way.

German government officials claim that Chinese diplomats reached out to them with requests to put out positive comments about Beijing’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis, as international pressure on the country grows everyday.

This was revealed by the German Interior Ministry recently.

“The German government is aware of individual contacts made by Chinese diplomats with the aim of effecting positive public statements on the coronavirus management by the People’s Republic of China,” said the letter, Reuters reported.

“The federal government has not complied with these requests.”

COVID fever, quite literally? Yahoo! reveals most searched words before and after lockdown in India

United Kingdom’s doctors haven’t been shy in talking about shortages faced by them since the COVID-19 pandemic took over the country.

However, a new research suggests that doctors are still finding it hard to procure personal protection kits even after reaffirmation from authorities over the last few weeks.

Very recently, the Royal College of Physicians condemned the lack of preparedness by calling it “truly terrible” while adding that the lives of frontline workers continues to be at risk due to the non-availability of PPE kits.

A survey undertaken by the college claims that doctors who undertake AGPs (Aerosol-generating procedures) whereby people are asked to expel droplets from their mouths, over 37 per cent don’t have access to a visor while over 31 per cent don’t have full-length gowns.

To be put in the line of direct particles containing COVID-19, a doctor has to wear a head to toe PPE gear.

The survey witnessed responses by 2,129 doctors, The Guardian reported.

Turns out, over 27 per cent doctors claimed to have no access the kits required to ensure their safety. In the beginning of April, the number was much lower - at 22 per cent.

This could in turn disrupt the treatment process, as doctors may refuse to treat patients in the absence of kits.

Are masks the key?

The World Health Organization (WHO) has repeatedly asserted that face masks are solely for healthcare workers, not the general public. However, the Chinese authorities have claimed that masks should be worn by everyone at all times.

Many studies have also found that the rate of infection can be lowered by ensuring masks are being worn by both the infected and the non-infected.

“Wearing a medical mask is one of the prevention measures that can limit the spread of certain respiratory viral diseases, including Covid-19. However, the use of a mask alone is insufficient to provide an adequate level of protection, and other measures should also be adopted,” the WHO said.

However, masks are not the straightaway solution, for the frontals of these masks could be infected with the virus and could still infect people when they take it off.

Additionally, the world is currently witnessing a shortage of medical grade masks, putting the lives of healthcare workers at risk.

Doctors fear for their lives

A separate survey claims that over 61 per cent of family doctors in the UK are now refusing to treat patients in the absence of availability of PPEs. Additionally, 74 per cent claim that they fear for their life and health.

Most doctors have switched to online consultations, but many requiring surgeries and hands-on treatment are visiting their doctors.

Although many GP appointments are now being conducted by telephone or video link, some patients are still coming into surgeries for a face-to-face consultation.

UK still doesn't have enough PPEs for doctors: Study

The high Covid-19 mortality rate in Gujarat could be due to the dominance of the L-type strain of coronavirus, found to have been more prevalent in Wuhan in China, where the outbreak started, experts said.

The dominance of the more virulent L-type coronavirus strain as compared to the S-type one could be behind the high mortality rate in the state, which has reported 133 deaths so far. However, no research has been conducted to confirm this, they said.

A scientist at the state-run Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC) said that the novel coronavirus used for genome sequencing recently conducted by it was found to contain the L-type strain.

"Analysis done by scientists abroad has shown that the L-type strain has been dominant where more mortality is reported among coronavirus patients. This strain was found to be more prevalent in Wuhan," director of GBRC, C G Joshi, said.

"The coronavirus sample we collected from a patient for genome sequence contained the L-type strain. This strain has a much higher virulence as compared to the S-strain," he said.

"Variation in coronavirus is in terms of number and percentage of mutations. As per the analysis, the L-type strain is dominant where more mortality is reported. Scientists have earlier found that this strain has caused more deaths," he said.

The GBRC recently succeeded in decoding the entire genome sequence of the novel coronavirus and identified its three new mutations.

Joshi added that the patient from whom the virus sample was collected for sequencing has fully recovered.

So far, no study has been conducted here to establish which strain of coronavirus is predominant in patients here.

Atul Patel, a specialist in infectious diseases, attributed the presence of the L-type strain more than the S- type one in Gujarat is behind high mortality rate.

Patel has said that a little higher presence of the L-type strain, or the original Wuhan strain, could be behind higher death rate in the state.

The state government has also attributed the high mortality among coronavirus patients in the state to comorbidities and high-risk factors.

Heart and lung diseases, diabetes, and hypertension are among common diseases that have been found among Covid-19 patients who passed away in Gujarat.

The risk factors include patients in the age group of above over 60 years and under five years of age and pregnant women, and they account for 90 per cent of patients who passed away, Principal Secretary (Health), Jayanti Ravi had recently said.

COVID-19: Bill Gates defends China, calls blame-game a 'distraction'

Wuhan, the initial epicentre of COVID-19 in China has now discharged all of its patients.

Over the last few weeks, the number of new patients in the city were declining continuously. Only three new cases have been registered across China with no fresh fatalities.

China’s National Health Commission claims that Wuhan now has zero new patients.

“Thanks to the joint efforts of Wuhan and medical staff from around the country,” said Mi Feng, a spokesman for the commission.

Out of the three new reported cases in the country on Sunday, two were imported infections, ie, they were transmitted or originated from outside China.

The third was a case transmitted in the northeastern border town of Heilongjiang, which has recently witnessed a surge in cases in cases as people from Russia make their way back into the country.

After months of lockdown in China, the country is reopening slowly. So far, over 82,000 cases have been recorded in the country, and over 4,633 people have died.

However, authorities are fearful of a second wave. On Sunday, Beijing announced a slew of measures to promote “civilised behaviour”. As part of this, citizens have been advised not to sneeze and cough in public. Additionally, they have been asked not to eat in public and also to don a mask during sickness.

Further, restaurants across the country have been instructed to provide utensils and to stop serving family style meals in favour of individual portions.

All these provisions are expected to come into force starting June 1.

In the last few weeks, China has faced mounting pressure and criticism globally for withholding information about the virus and for fudging numbers. Recently, the authorities increased the death toll of Wuhan by 50 per cent out of the blue.

Given the nature of the virus, which sometimes manifests itself without any symptoms has raised fears of reinfection, as it spreads at a much faster rate than SARS but has a lower fatality rate than it.

Those who have recovered and underwent 14 days of isolation are now required to be put under observation for an extra seven days, whereby they shall be barred from venturing outside.

The city of Shenzhen now has 461 infections, and anybody entering the city through its ports is forced to undergo quarantine. Over the last month, everyone entering the city was put in 14 days of isolation.

In the midst of this all, China is facing questions from the global community, who are wondering whether China could have averted a global crisis by reporting it early.

Also read: Has Wuhan really recovered? Wuhan discharges all coronavirus patients, reports zero new cases

The demand to hold China accountable is now growing and Australia seems to be taking an aggressive stance. It has emerged as one of the most forceful critics of China.

Today, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison appeared before the media and called for an independent review into the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/world-leaders-to-launch-who-covid-19-plan-but-us-wont-take-part-294566">coronavirus </a>pandemic. A global investigation backed by members of the WHO.

"We will need an independent inquiry, that looks at what has occurred here so we can learn the lessons. Now, there will be debates about the timing of that. We are in the middle of dealing with the pandemic right now and I understand some of the hesitations that have been expressed about the timing of that particular inquiry," Australian PM Scott Morrison said.

"Our purpose here is just pretty simple - we'd like the world to be safer when it comes to viruses. It seems like a pretty honest ambition that I'm sure most people in the world would agree with. So it would be great if we could achieve that and that's the spirit in which we're pursuing this and I would certainly hope that any other nation, be it China or anyone else, would share that objective."

It has been brewing for a week now. Australia's foreign minister Marise Payne had raised this demand first. Something that the Australian PM has agreed with. In fact, Australia wants to push for the probe at the world health assembly, it is the decision making body of the WHO. Australia sits on the executive board of the assembly.

A body, that determines WHO policies and appoints the director-general. The world health assembly will meet on&nbsp;&nbsp;May 17.

Australia might find some support from its neighbour. New Zealand Deputy PM backs the investigation demand. Winston Peters backs "a totally comprehensive, world class investigation" into the origin of the coronavirus.

He said that he is surprised that China is not "welcoming it themselves".&nbsp;

Now, Australia calls for coronavirus probe in China with WHO's assistance

China has taken a combative approach towards lawsuits. It has rejected any and all demands for reparations. On the question of numbers,&nbsp;Beijing says it has been transparent.

However, the repeated statements have not settled the debate. China has reported more than 80,000 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/japan-osaka-mayor-under-fire-after-he-says-men-should-do-grocery-shopping-as-women-are-indecisive-294530">coronavirus </a>cases with over 4,000 deaths. Far less than the other hotspots.

For some experts&nbsp;that doesn't add up and now, a new study published in The Lancet has stirred up the debate.

It claims China has&nbsp;more than two lakh cases in the mainland which is four times more than the official numbers. Researchers from Hong Kong have put together these estimates.

How did they come up with that number? Is China hiding 75 per cent of its cases?

The researchers revisited the first wave of cases. They say that initially&nbsp;the diagnostic criteria was very narrow. It was revisited several times between the January 15 and March 15.

China kept changing its testing criteria. The study analyses numbers upto February 20. The same data, that was given to the WHO. They found that with each change of the diagnostic criteria, the cases rose until February, there were as many as five such revisions.

If last criteria is applied throughout the outbreak, then there would be 2,30,000 cases. At that time, China had reported just a little more than 55,000 cases.

China hasn't allowed any independent verification of the numbers. Just last week, China had revised the numbers for Wuhan increasing the death toll by 50 per cent.

The revision only led to more doubts and more questions. So far, the claims over China's real coronavirus numbers have been based on hearsay, speculation and circumstantial evidence.

The Tencent data glitch is a case in point. The Chinese tech giant had published thE data on its website at the beginning of February with over 24,000 deaths and over one lakh cases but Tencent later said it was a glitch.

Thermal images of Wuhan allegedly recorded mass burials in Wuhan suggesting a much higher death toll.

After Wuhan, fears of second coronavirus wave in China's northeast

There's talk of a second <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/at-least-60-of-infectious-75-of-emerging-diseases-originate-from-animals-says-study-293767">coronavirus </a>wave in Beijing. In the Chinese capital's most high profile district, China's diplomatic and financial hub.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/china-eases-entry-sets-up-fast-track-channels-for-business-personnel-to-visit-293819">Also Read:&nbsp;China eases entry, sets up 'fast-track channels' for business personnel to visit</a>

It's the new high-risk zone at risk with 3.5 million residents, numerous foreign embassies, &nbsp;headquarters of top international firms and offices of two Chinese ministries.

Wuhan had celebrated the lifting of the 76-day lockdown. China's message to the world was - we've beaten the coronavirus. The light show may have been a bit premature, however, with China yet to disentangle itself from the web of the Wuhan virus. Now, the threat of a second outbreak looms. The number of new cases is on the rise.

Beijing's Chaoyang district may be the "new Wuhan", the swanky business district has been classified as China's only "high risk" zone. What is a high-risk zone all about?

Any area that has more than 50 confirmed cases and records a cluster of outbreak within 14 days. What makes Chaoyang a high-risk zone?

Its total number of coronavirus cases exceeds 50. The district has also confirmed a cluster. This after an imported case infected three family members. Should china be worried?

Yes, and for many reasons. First, Chaoyang is Beijing's most populous district. A chain reaction puts 3.47 million residents at risk. Second, who are the residents?

The creme de la creme of Beijing. Chaoyang is Beijing's diplomatic district. It has all foreign missions - except the embassies of Russia and Luxembourg.

Third, Chaoyang &nbsp;houses Beijing's business district. Sixty per cent of the foreign business agencies, 3,000 international companies, 167 international news agencies are situated in in the swanky area.

Needless to say, it is home to some of the top Chinese firms. Fourth, headquartered in Chaoyang is China's ministry of foreign affairs, the ministry of culture, and
the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.

So the government's workflow is at stake. Also, the main international airport serving Beijing is located at Chaoyang. In the area are some of the capital's poshest malls, upmarket bars, elite clubs and restaurants.

The cluster epidemic in Chaoyang could spell disaster leave alone an uncontrolled spread. International arrivals in Beijing are sent to a 14-day paid hotel quarantine
but are the measures enough?

If so, how did Chaoyang record a cluster?

It comes at a time when China is determined to re-open its economy. It is trying to usher in more aggressive economic policies. Beijing has re-opened 73 tourist sites.&nbsp;30.7 per cent of the city's municipality is open as are parts of the Great Wall of China.

The Dragon wants to wear a mask of normalcy but Chaoyang is a ticking time bomb and the situation calls for a preventive lockdown but nothing really is black and white in China.&nbsp;

Beijing had ordered a virtual clampdown for the past two months on anyone visiting the country with the coronavirus spreading like wildfire in the country, however, with the virus now reportedly abating and Wuhan which was believed to be the origin of the virus opening up slowly, Chinese authorities have decided to loosen restrictions.

China is now in talks with Singapore and South Korea to set up "fast track" for businesspeople to travel between the countries.

"The purpose is to stabilise important economic and trade cooperation... and to ensure the safe and smooth operation of international industrial and supply chains," foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said, adding, "Beijing has reached a consensus with Seoul on the fast-track channel and both sides are working to implement the plan.

China had recently lifted restriction in Hubei province which was the epicenter of the virus. The virus has killed over 171,255 people worldwide since it was first reported in Wuhan on December 31 last year.&nbsp;

There are 2,495,994 cases of the virus worldwide with the United States the worst-hit with 787,960 cases and over 35,000 deaths. The epicentre of the virus has since shifted to New York in the United States which has seen over 12,000 deaths with thousands dying in Italy and Spain, including the United Kingdom.

80 out of 100 people show mild to no symptoms of coronavirus: Health Ministry

The United States is currently under a strong grip of COVID-19, with over 40,000 deaths reported so far - the highest for any country.

President Donald Trump has been holding daily press briefings. Recently, he played a clip of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo praising him.

Critics were quick to slam him for turning a pandemic briefing into a “campaign ad”, as The Guardian put it.

Andre Cuomo has staunchly criticised Trump’s reaction to the pandemic. His state - New York has witnessed the highest number of cases in the entire country and continues to remain the hardest-hit.

The clips showed Cuomo saying “What the federal government did, working with states ... was a phenomenal accomplishment… These were just extraordinary efforts and acts of mobilisation, and the federal government stepped up and was a great partner, and I’m the first to say it. We needed help and they were there.”

Just two days before the clips emerged, Cuomo launched a scathing attack against Trump and said, “First of all, if he’s sitting home watching TV, maybe he should get up and go to work, right”

“Second, let’s keep emotion and politics out of this and personal ego if we can because this is about the people and our job and let’s try to focus on that”, he further added.

It turns out, Cuomo indeed acknowledged Trump’s quick decision to increase hospital capacity, he did fact-check Trump on his claims that the Javits Center, which had been converted into a hospital, had not been used. Cuomo said that the centre is well in use for patients.

“The president doesn’t want to help on testing. I said 11 times, I said the one issue we need help with is testing. He said 11 times: ‘I don’t want to get involved in testing, it’s too complicated, it’s too hard.’ I know it’s too complicated and too hard. That’s why we need help. I can’t do an international supply chain”, Cuomo further added.

“He wants to say: ‘Well I did enough.’ Yeah, none of us have done enough. We haven’t, because it’s not over ... We have a lot more to do and no one can do the posture of ‘Just say thank you for what I’ve done, and I’m now out, I’m not doing anything else. I’ve done my part”, Cuomo said.

Trump is now moving on to reopen the economy and to focus on his reelection campaign, reports suggest.

'Campaign ad': Trump faces backlash for playing 'selective' clips of Cuomo praising him during a coronavirus briefing

Mega-companies like Facebook and Google will now have to share advertising revenues with media companies in Australia.

Australia would now have a compulsory code of conduct for such digital companies. This is part of a bigger plan to deal with the steep decline in advertising triggered by the advent of COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision was announced by Australia’s treasurer Josh Frydenberg.

Back in December 2019, Australian government had directed the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to come up with a code among media companies and digital platforms.

As part of this code, the digital platforms were asked how they pay media companies for using their content, and how industry changes affect the relationship between the two entities, and whether digital companies loop in original content or their own rebranded content.

They would now be liable to share all such data with media companies.

Even though the code was supposed to be finalised in November 2020, it has now been pushed back owing to the mounting decline in ad revenue, triggered by coronavirus.

Australia was one of the first countries to respond to the outbreak and has since then managed to limit its spread.

As coronavirus appears to have peaked in major countries of the world, the global health infrastructure now faces a new challenge: reinfections!

In South Korea alone, over 163 people who had recovered from the virus have now contracted it again, as per data released by Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC).

A similar pattern has been noted in China, especially in Wuhan. However, China has been very secretive about its figures, making it hard to track.

In South Korea, the relapse rate is as low as 2.1 per cent (for every 7,829 people), but it still leaves many questions about the virus unanswered.

South Korea has been very rigorously testing its citizens, has one of the highest testing rates, and was the first country to flatten the curve.

Mild symptoms

It’s important to note that people who retest positive may or may not be contagious, for 44 per cent of them showed only mild symptoms.

KCDC’s deputy director Kwon Joon-wook told CNN that there is no clarity on naturally acquired immunity.

Kwon further called it the “most challenging pathogen” faced by humanity in recent decades.

KCDC believed that such reinfections could point to the existence of the remains left by the virus in one’s body, and may have little to do with its transmission.

The virus, then, in essence, could not be alive, as was found by the scientists who undertook retesting.

Zhong Nanshan, one of China’s top doctors also echoed the sentiments. He said that tests that are strong may be picking up “fragments of the disease”, and claims to not be “too worried about the issue”.

Of course, tests are volatile. There could be as many false positives as false negatives.

Precaution is key

Kwon further added that the risk of such relapse cases transmitting may be low, but still suggests people to exercise precaution. South Korea makes it mandatory for patients to test negative for the test twice in a row for them to be able to return home. Even then, they have to isolate for 14 days.

Additionally, there also seems to be guarantee of people developing antibodies and whether the body could then fight the infection.

As coronavirus reinfections surface across countries, what threats do such lapses pose?

Turns out, farts are capable of spreading the novel coronavirus, which continues to kill thousands globally everyday.

The virus was discovered in the faeces of more than 50 per cent patients who tested positive for coronavirus.

Ample preexisting research suggests that farts carry tiny particles that are capable of spreading bacteria.

Even though, like all things coronavirus, more research is needed to ascertain the intensity of such infections.

An Australian doctor,&nbsp;Dr Andy Tagg carried out tests on COVID-19 patients and found that 55 per cent of them had the virus present in their stool.

Additionally, it is now well established that asymptomatic carriers may be spreading the disease more than previously thought, making it harder to trace and diagnose.

The doctor further added that farts are capable of spreading the gaseous bacteria over long distances.

In 2001, two Australian researchers Karl Kruszelnicki and Luke Tennent undertook a research to find out whether farts are capable of spreading diseases.

As part of this, Dr Tennent made a colleague fart into two Petri dishes from five centimetres away. One while wearing pants, and the other without.

In the beginning of 2020, when coronavirus was just starting out in the world, the Chinese Centers of Disease Control and Prevention’s wing in Tongzhou district announced that pants act as an effective barrier against farts that carry the novel coronavirus. It further added that farts will not spread the virus if pants are worn.

China’s CDC warned that people who carry the virus and fart without pants on, or if they fart in large amounts, could potentially put others at risk.

So the takeaway is: wear pants, fart safe!

Could farts transmit COVID-19?

The relationship between North Korea and the United States continues to sour, with both sides issuing constant threats and statements against each other, especially with Donald Trump in power. The presidents holds back no words, and has been constantly critical of North Korea.

Donald Trump had recently claimed to have received a friendly letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

However, the Korean side recently denied the existence of any such letter and further attacked Trump for using the relationship between the two countries to further his “selfish” interests.

Just on Saturday, Trump announced in a press briefing that he had received a written note from Kim. “It was a nice note… I think that we’re doing fine”, he had said.

Additionally, Trump claimed that both the countries would have gone to war by now, had it not been for his diplomacy.

Amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, Trump has referred to himself as a “war time president”. This was countered by Joe Biden, his Democrat rival in this year’s elections, who asked him to “behave like one”.

“[Their relations] are not an issue to be taken up just for diversion, nor should [they] be misused for meeting selfish purposes,” the ministry pointed out.

Trump and Kim first met in 2018 during a summit in Singapore. The US president has constantly pushed for the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

But North Korea’s rhetoric continues to intensify. They recently announced plans to hit US hard, and that the time for diplomacy and talks was over.

After Kim called for withdrawal of sanctions against his country, which Trump rejected, the relationship between the countries continued to become stressful in 2019.

In the end of March, Trump has sent a letter to Kim and offered assistance in handling coronavirus. According to North Korean media, Trump claimed to have been “impressed” by Kim’s handling of the killer pandemic.

North Korea denies sending a 'nice note' to Donald Trump

As the novel coronavirus wreaks havoc across the globe, countries with excess supplies have stepped up humanitarian efforts to ease the global pressure.

Be it India sending medicines like paracetamol across the world, or the Chinese mass-producing face masks.

However, US President Donald Trump recently offered to send ventilators to Iran. Iran was one of the hardest hit countries during the initial global wave last month. Over the last few weeks, the epicentres have continued to shift. First, it was Wuhan. Then Europe and Iran, and now it is the United States, which has recorded 40,000 deaths - the highest for any country.

Trump’s offer was recently rejected Iran’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif. He further said that Iran plans to export its own devices “in a few months”.

During a press briefing on Saturday, Trump had offered to send “excess ventilators” to Iran. He said, “If they need ventilators, which they do, I would send them ventilators,” Trump said.

However, he has repeatedly displayed anger at state governors. His senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner went to the extend of saying that “this is the federal reserve” while referring to the states demanding ventilators. The US president has received widespread criticism for dealing with the virus.

After offering to send ventilators to Iran, Trump added, “ “Right now they just want to survive… they’re loaded up with the plague.”

In his tweet, Zarif said, “Iran will be EXPORTING ventilators in a few months, all you need to do is stop interfering in the affairs of other nations; mine especially.”

The rush to understand, predict and head off the COVID-19 outbreak has prompted researchers worldwide to create several tools to detect the virus and has driven them to analyse hundreds of ways to avoid the virus.

Professor Rita Singh of Carnegie Melon University in Pittsburgh has created a tool to determine the COVID-19 infection through the sound of a person’s cough, speech or even the sound of breathing.

Currently, most of these efforts are at a stage in which the researchers are gathering speech and coughing recordings are and fed to ai algorithms&nbsp; to determine whether someone has the COVID-19 infection

The COVID-19 voice detector - as professor Singh calls it traces the micro signatures of one’s voice, which are not audible to the untrained listener but are nevertheless present.

Any condition affecting the lungs or the respiratory system – as has been established in the cases of COVID-19 infection - has a palpable effect on voice. The tool is basically a self-learning system that is now trying to learn signatures of a COVID-19 infection in the voice, not just in the cough.

Cough against COVID?

A similar initiative is being carried out by the Mumbai-based Washwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence. Wadhwani’s ‘cough against covid’ mobile application asks users to record the sound of their coughing to conduct a test for COVID-19.

As the disease brings much of the world to a halt, scientists and health experts have called for technology to play a bigger part in tackling the pandemic – which has grown too quickly for conventional containment tools to have an effect.

Where on one side the researchers are working on detecting the infection from sound of cough,&nbsp; another study shows that the two-metre distance considered a safe measure to avoid close contact is not safe enough.

Two metres not enough?

A recent study suggests that two metres might not be far enough away if someone lets an uncovered cough loose in your direction.

Explorations by virologists at a Canadian hospital show that cough airflows produced by human subjects is naturally infected with seasonal flu. As per the study, if someone coughs without any protective gear from a couple of metres away, then the cough has reached you and is still moving. The study also shows that as much as 10 per cent of the fine droplets from cough remain suspended in the air even after four seconds. The findings support the calls for a verification of social distancing measures during the ongoing pandemic.

Dry, don't blow

A third such UK-based study shows that hands dried on paper towel spread less virus to other surfaces. The researchers deliberately contaminated four people’s hands with a harmless virus and dried them in four different ways. The average surface contamination was more than 10 times higher after contact with jet air dried hands compared with those dried on paper towels.

Cough against COVID? Yes, this app tests you for coronavirus through the sound of you coughing

With the COVID-19 pandemic showing no signs of slowing its spread, governments across the world are trying to use mobile technology to trace people thought to have the virus. But how do these mobile contact-tracing apps work, and can they help in flattening the curve?

Nearly 2.14 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally.

More than 200 countries across the world have declared a war on this invisible enemy. But no one has managed to defeat it yet.

Coronavirus can only be contained if those infected are successfully isolated and treated. And this is where bluetooth-driven contact-tracing apps can come in handy.

So what is this technology about?

<ul>
<li>The first step is obviously to download the app. The user then needs to update his or her COVID-19 status.</li>
<li>These apps use the phone’s bluetooth technology to determine if a given user came in close proximity with an infected person.</li>
<li>If it happens, it alerts the user with a notification and urges him to get tested and self-isolate.</li>
<li>In principle, this system is more efficient than traditional contact-tracing methods that require the concerned staff to interview patients about their travels.</li>
<li>Many countries have already adopted this technology,&nbsp;and others are likely to follow suit.</li>
</ul>

Singapore is the first country to have implemented contact-tracing via bluetooth with an app called “trace together.”

India’s Arogya Setu app also works on the same technology.

Other countries such as Israel, China, and South Korea are also using similar apps to contain the spread of the deadly virus.

Tech giants like Apple and Google are working on new tools to make app-based tracing more effective.

The companies say their technology could enable apps to monitor contacts for a 14-day period.

Eventually, the process of digital tracing could help authorities relax lockdowns in some parts and enable more selective quarantines.

In other words, it can help decision makers determine which areas are relatively safer.

Is it effective?

<ul>
<li>Researchers say that digital tracing can be effective only if 60 per cent of the population downloads the app and updates their status.</li>
<li>Experts believe that contact tracing is helpful only in countries where mass testing is available.</li>
<li>There are privacy-related concerns around contact-tracing apps. Privacy advocates worry that such a database could be a hackers’ goldmine.</li>
<li>Some researchers say contact-tracing can be implemented while protecting privacy. Although this will vary from app to app in each country.</li>
</ul>

The technology looks promising, but it needs the support of users to be effective.

While the death toll is rising due to COVID-19, China’s economy is now feeling the effects.

It has contracted by 6.8 percent, for the first time in more than 40 years.

This drop came in the first three months of 2020. The last time something like this was seen was in the year 1976.

The Chinese economy survived the Tiananmen Square crackdown, the SARS epidemic, and the global financial crisis of 2008.

How is the Chinese economy's shrinkage reconfiguring the global economy?

Economic activity has come to a grinding halt around the world. India too, is reeling for the ill-effects of coronavirus-induced slowdown.

India could grow by less than two percent this year.

Empty streets are the new normal as stores are shut and flights grounded. Additionally, all restaurants and cinemas are empty.

India's growth rate was slowing even before coronavirus entered the country, but the pandemic could push India closer to a recession.

The coronavirus is not just a health emergency for the government, it has triggered one of the worst economic downturns.

One that is bound to impact incomes and salaries, the crisis has already led to layoffs.

Reports say, people have been asked to leave in IT, media and startup companies. Potentially, millions of jobs are at risk.

This includes India's estimated 120 million migrant labourers.

A trend?

The numbers may be speculative right now. But they do signal the trend.

The virus will drag the economy down, and the Indian government hopes to contain the damage.

Last month, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced a 1.7 lakh crore relief package.

One that was primarily targeted at those who were hit the hardest.

Now, reports claim that the government could be working on a second stimulus package.

The Reserve Bank of India too, is doing its bit. On Friday, it announced a slew of measures.

“Now in order to encourage the banks to deploy these surplus funds in investments and loans in productive sectors of the economy it has been decided to reduce the fixed repo rate, reserve repo rate”, said Reserve Bank of India, Governor, Shaktikanta Das.

The reverse repo rate has been reduced by 25 basis points to 3.75 percent. This is the rate at which the RBI borrows funds from banks.

The cut is an attempt to discourage banks from parking cash with the central bank.

RBI has cut its key rates for a second time in three weeks. These moves could boost lending to businesses.

But experts believe that the Indian government needs to do more.

Many believe that a second stimulus package is no longer just a possibility, it is inevitable.

Kim Jong-Un absent on country’s most important holiday: Precaution or doom?

North Korea’s most important holiday - the Day of the Sun falls on April 15, in honour of the country’s founding father Kim II Sung.

Millions across the country celebrate birth of their founding leader. North Korea usually goes big on the day and has marked it with satellite launches and military parades in the first.

However, something was amiss this year. The Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un was no where to be seen on the country’s most auspicious day.

Is North Korea being overly protective of its leader or is something wrong with him?

For a country with no reported cases of coronavirus so far, a precautionary measure so extreme feels a little far-fetched.

The last time a leadermmissed something of such importance, he had experienced a stroke.

So, is he ok?

According to CNN, no North Korean media reported his absence/presence at the Day of the Sun festivities.&nbsp;

KCNA, North Korea’s state run news outlet reported that “senior officials” had undertaken the visit to Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, where Kim II Sung and his son Kim Jong II are on display.

Analysts believe that this absence marks an unprecedented deviation from custom, for he has never skipped such meetings since he took charge of the country.

In 2008, Kim Jong II had missed North Korea’s 60th anniversary parade. It later turned out that he had experienced a stroke. His health then continued to deteriorate until his death in 2011.

In 2014, Kim Jong Un had disappeared which raised questions about his health. A few days later, it turned out that he a cyst removed from his ankle.

North Korea’s claim of zero coronavirus cases in the country has been disputed by all analysts. And many believe that it could be the likely cause of his absence.

The country has closed its borders to tourists and has quarantined all foreign diplomats, who all eventually left.

As Belarus' president calls coronavirus 'psychosis', organisations step-up mobilisation efforts

Did former United States President Barack Obama predict the seriousness of a potential outbreak?

Turns out, the Obama administration had been pushing for a universal healthcare infrastructure to globally deal with a potentially “air borne” pandemic, similar to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

“We have to put in place an infrastructure,&nbsp; not just at home but also globally. That allows us to see it quickly, isolate it quickly, respond to it quickly”, he said in a briefing.

"We must be ready"

Obama warned in 2014, that we must be ready to deal with an epidemic.

“So that if and when a new strain of flu, like the Spanish flu, crops up, five years or a decade from now - we’ve made the investment - and we’re further along to be able to catch it”, the former president had asserted.

Obama called for more pandemic preparedness following the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, which was then seen as a global threat.

“The funding we’re asking for is needed to keep strengthening our capacity here at home so we can respond to any future Ebola cases.. It’s needed to help us partner with other countries to prevent and deal with future outbreaks and threats before they become epidemics”, Obama had said.

He added how the world had got lucky in terms of the Swine Flu, which had subsided on its own.

“We were lucky with H1N1 that it did not prove to be more deadly. We can’t say we’re lucky with Ebola because obviously it’s having a devastating effect tin West africa, but it is not airborne in its transmission”, he had said.

However, coronavirus is airborne, and is way more deadly than any epidemic seen in recent history.

Airborne mayhem

“There may and likely will come a time in which we have both an airborne disease that is deadly“, he said predicted. Looks like his prophecy turned out to be true.

“It’s not just insurance, it is knowing that down the road, we’re gonna continue to have problems like this - particularly in a globalised world”.

He had earlier written in an oped in New York Times back in 2005 - “We recommend that this administration work with Congress, public health officials, the pharmaceutical industry, foreign governments, and international organisations to create a permanent framework for curtailing the spread of future infectious diseases”.

“I cannot think of a better example of an area where we should all agree than passing this emergency funding to fight Ebola and to set up some of the public health infrastructure in the world to deal with potential outbreaks in the future”.

Trump's denial

The incumbent US president Donald Trump had received reports about the seriousness of COVID-19 as early as March but continued to discount those well into March.

At a briefing he said that the virus would go away by April because of the heat. But it has now killed over 30,000 people in the United States alone.

According to new projections, 100,000-240,000 people are expected to die of the virus in the US alone.
