Prime Minister Scott Morrison this week banned arrivals from India, which is recording hundreds of thousands of new coronavirus infections each day.

Under the measures, Australian citizens who return home face jail time and heavy fines.

The move has caused widespread outrage, with Morrison's own allies describing it as racist and an abandonment of vulnerable Australians overseas.

The conservative government has argued the ban is necessary to prevent&nbsp;Australia's quarantine facilities from being overwhelmed with Covid-positive arrivals.

Christopher Ward, the lawyer representing the 73-year-old man, said his client was challenging the ban on several grounds of constitutionality, "proportionality and reasonableness".&nbsp;

Justice Stephen Burley ordered that a further hearing date would be set in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Australia&nbsp;has no widespread community transmission of COVID-19&nbsp;but has seen several outbreaks emerge from hotel quarantine facilities, causing disruptive city lockdowns.

There are estimated to be around 9,000 Australian citizens in India, including high-profile cricketers playing the now-suspended Indian Premier League.

Morrison on Tuesday refused to amend the ban but insisted it was "highly unlikely" the punishment would ever be meted out.&nbsp;

The ban is currently scheduled to run until May 15.

Monash University constitutional law professor Luke Beck predicted it would be difficult for the challenge to succeed, and even a temporary injunction is unlikely.

"The Australian constitution doesn't set out very many rights that individuals have," he told AFP, adding that there is no explicit right to return home.

The challenge may be trying to convince the court that the measures are disproportionate to the threat, but "judges tend to side with the government's public health expert", he said.

"It's quite unlikely that this challenge will succeed."

Former India player and 2011 World Cup winner Suresh Raina says that Pat Cummins' captaincy is something which worked in favour of Australia in the ODI World Cup 2023 final vs India. Raina shared his thoughts in his column for the ICC two days after Australia won its sixth 50-over World Cup title.

"What swung the game in Australia’s favour was Pat Cummins’ captaincy," wrote Raina in his column.

"I think Cummins showed real temperament in his captaincy. He changed his bowlers knowing he could put pressure on each India batter even though they were all in such good form. His tactics made all the difference, and his planning and execution were perfect," he added.

Raina, who was a gun fielder during his playing days, also appreciated Australia's fielding and said that it made a difference of 30-40 runs.

"Another big factor was Australia’s fielding, I think they saved 30 to 40 runs," Raina noted.

"From ball one, they were saving a lot of singles and boundaries. There was Travis’ catch and some excellent work in the deep from David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne," he added.

The former India player, however, was confident of the team bouncing back and doing well in the future.

"We will see the Indian team doing well again because they know how to reach the latter stages of tournaments now," Raina said.

"It just takes a bit of time to understand how to manage those pressure situations, especially when you’re at home.&nbsp;

"Sometimes when there’s a lot of pressure you can lose your focus, and I think that’s a lesson they will learn from this."

India's next assignment is a five-T20I series against Australia which starts from November 23.

“Nobody knew the pain I was dealing with [during the 2015 edition],” Shami confessed during a candid chat with PUMA as he revealed his success mantra of not taking a close look at the wicket before the start of the match, just to keep himself relaxed.

In the exclusive interview, Shami also opened up about various facets of his difficult yet impressive cricketing journey, right from scoring a century as an opener in his first leather ball match, earning money through cricket for the first time at around 16 years of age, overcoming personal challenges bravely, creating an old-school training set-up at farmhouse, to maiden India call-up and many more.

“I had swelling in my knee before the 2015 tournament. Someone else could have said no but I have the ability to bear pain and I was told two options—either directly go for surgery or play the tournament and then go for the surgery. While the team would return to the hotel after every match, I would go to the hospital to take the injection. When you play for the country, you forget everything,“ Shami shared.

Shami underwent a knee operation. “I was unconscious for two hours. When I woke up, I asked the doctor when I could start playing. He replied, ‘It will be a big achievement if you walk without a limp, forget playing. It all depends on how you go about your rehab,” the pacer stated.

Shami has not looked back since. His comeback journey has been visibly inspirational. He not only surpassed the likes of bowling greats to become the highest wicket-taker for the country in the world’s biggest cricket tournament with 55 wickets from 18 matches, but also created history earlier in the semi-finals when he registered India’s best ODI bowling figures of 7-57.

The 33-year-old shared his secret that helps him perform better. “Generally, bowlers check the pitch after arriving at the ground. I never go close to the wicket because you will know how it behaves only when you bowl on it. Then why take the pressure? It’s best to keep it simple, keep yourself relaxed and only then you will perform better,” said Shami, as he also revealed that he doesn’t follow any pre-match ritual.

“Better hai aap subah utho, mast fresh hojao, chaay peeyo, gaane suno [it’s better you wake up, get fresh, have tea and listen to songs] ” he added.

Although Shami was in stellar form in the tournament, he had to sit out for the initial few matches. In the interaction, he shared that it bothered him but the team’s performance made him happy. “When you sit out for four matches, you need to be mentally strong. Sometimes you are under pressure but when you see the team performing well and going in a good direction, it gives you satisfaction.”

He added that he doesn’t look at record books and only tries to take as many wickets as possible.
