Memphis Depay scored twice to guide the Netherlands to a first win following the return of coach Louis van Gaal with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Montenegro in their World Cup Group G qualifier in Eindhoven on Saturday.

Depay slotted a first-half penalty and added a second goal after the break to take his recent tally to nine in as many games for the Dutch, who also scored through Georginio Wijnaldum and a first international strike for Cody Gakpo.

They are second in Group G midway through qualification with 10 points from five games, one point behind leaders Turkey and on the same number as third-placed Norway. Only the top team qualifies automatically for the finals in Qatar next year.

Netherlands host Turkey in Amsterdam in a potentially key game on Tuesday, while Norway are at home to minnows Gibraltar.

It took almost 20 minutes for the first effort on target as Depay stung the palms of Montenegro goalkeeper Matija Sarkic from the edge of the box, before Davy Klaassen was denied his second goal in as many games when his excellent header crashed back off the crossbar.

Depay’s clever turn in the box 10 minutes before halftime drew a foul from Dusan Lagator and the Dutch forward stepped up to convert a thunderous spot-kick into the top corner for a 1-0 lead at the break.

Some sloppy play from the home side gave Montenegro a rare opening at the start of the second half but Milutin Osmajic’s shot was tame and easy for Dutch goalkeeper Justin Bijlow.

An even better chance followed when debutant left back Tyrell Malacia put his side in danger with a terrible back-pass that allowed Montenegro striker Stefan Mugosa to bear down on goal, but his shot was high and wide with just the keeper to beat.

Those were warnings for the home side, but Depay settled the contest just past the hour mark with his second, rifling the ball into the net at the near post.

Mugosa missed another excellent chance from a similarly poor back-pass, this time Stefan de Vrij the culprit, before Wijnaldum was brilliantly teed-up by Steven Berghuis for the home side’s third goal.

Their fourth was a special moment for striker Gakpo, who curled an excellent shot from the edge of the box into the net for his first international goal at a stadium where he grew up watching home side PSV Eindhoven.

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani's Uruguay call-up for next month's World Cup qualifiers has been cancelled due to quarantine rules, Uruguay's football association (AUF) said on Monday.

Premier League clubs last week unanimously decided not to release players for international duty that required travel to countries on the UK's COVID-19 red list.

People travelling to red-list countries are required to quarantine for 10 days after returning, and Cavani would have missed the league game against Newcastle United on Sept. 11 and the Champions League clash against Young Boys three days later.

Liverpool have refused to allow Mohamed Salah to travel to Africa for World Cup qualifiers with Egypt next month because he would be forced to quarantine on his return to England, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) said on Monday.

It opens up the possibility of similar refusals from other European clubs ahead of next month’s World Cup qualifiers in Africa, Asia, the CONCACAF region, Europe and South America, and puts them on a potential collision course with FIFA.

A statement from the EFA said Liverpool had apologised for not allowing the Egypt captain to travel home for their Group F qualifier against Angola in Cairo on Sept. 2 and the trip to Gabon three days later.

“The Egyptian Football Association had received a letter from Liverpool apologising for the inability of its player, Mohamed Salah, to join the national team for next month’s African qualifiers for the World Cup.

“The English club’s letter referred to the precautionary measures applied in England to confront the outbreak of the coronavirus, which forces returnees from some countries to compulsory health isolation for a period of 10 days upon their return to England.

“In its letter, the English club also expressed its hope that the Egyptian association would understand that it was forced to do so, in the face of the player being subjected to a quarantine,” the EFA statement added.

The club have made no comment but the Liverpool Echo newspaper on Monday said the European Club Association, of which Liverpool are members, have agreed a collective position in refusing to release players for international duty next week should they have to quarantine on their return.

It could also affect Liverpool’s Brazilian trio of Roberto Firmino, Alisson Becker and Fabinho, who have been called up for next month’s qualifiers against Chile, Argentina and Peru.

FIFA has scrapped the exemption introduced last year, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed clubs to refuse to release players for international duty should travel restrictions be imposed or there be a mandatory period of quarantine or self-isolation of at least five days on their return.

“The temporary amendment was in place until April 2021 and is no longer currently in effect nor is it intended to be applied for September,” a spokesman for FIFA, world soccer's governing body, told Reuters.

“Since the outset of the pandemic, FIFA has continued to work in close cooperation with the confederations, member associations and respective authorities, monitoring the different restrictions and exemptions around the world.

"The regulations have reflected this process, as best as is possible at the global level. FIFA is confident that the situation will continue as it was the case in June for qualifiers and final continental tournaments and that players will be able to travel to play with their national teams and return to play with their clubs,” it added.

The Sri Lankan police have dropped the investigation that claimed the final of 2011 World Cup was fixed. According to officials, they decided to drop the case due to lack of evidence.&nbsp;

"We questioned three -- two players and the chief selector --about team selection and changes. We are satisfied with their explanation," a top police official told AFP. "The inquiry is now closed."

Last player to be interrogated was Mahela Jayawardene.&nbsp;

Then-sports minister of Sri Lanka Mahindananda Aluthgamage claimed that Sri Lanka “sold” the 2011 World Cup final.

"I feel I can talk about it now," Mahindananda Aluthgamage told a local TV network last month. "I am not connecting players, but some sections were involved."

Sri Lanka posted 274/6 off 50 overs before India chased down the target courtesy Gautam Gambhir’s 97 and MS Dhoni’s unbeaten 91. Sri Lanka was criticized for their poor bowling and fielding as India won the match by six wickets.

The toss in the summit class was also controversial as it took place twice after match referee Jeff Crowe apparently didn’t hear the call by Sangakkara and asked Dhoni to flip the coin again. Sri Lanka’s decision to bat first was also slammed by many.&nbsp;

Skipper Kumar Sangakkara, Upul Tharanga and many other players were grilled by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU).&nbsp;

After the interrogation, Sangakkara went on to say: "I hope at the end of this investigation, the truth about the allegations made by (former sports minister) Mahindananda Aluthgamage will come out."

Protests were staged by the members of the Samagi Tharuna Balawegay while the interrogation was on. Demonstrations were held against the harassment of Sri Lankan cricket team.

India's decision exempt tax for future global cricketing events has created discord between the ICC and the BCCI as the Indian cricket board gears up to host 2021 T20 World Cup and 50-over World Cup in 2023.

According to an ICC spokesman, both governing bodies are trying to figure out a solution. He said: "The ICC and BCCI have been working in partnership to address the issue of tax exemptions for ICC events that is a requirement of the host agreement signed by all parties at the beginning of the cycle in 2015 and this work is ongoing."

"There are certain timelines within the agreements that we collectively work towards to ensure we can deliver successful world-class events and continue to invest in the sport of cricket."

"In addition to this the ICC Board agreed to clear timelines for the resolution of the tax issues which we are guided by," the spokesperson added.

ICC chairman and chief executive have been in touch with BCCI &nbsp;President Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah, but a mail by ICC’s legal head Jonathan Hall has upset the BCCI.&nbsp;

According to Hall's mail, BCCI is not adhering to timelines on committing to tax exemptions as per the agreement.

“The tax structure is not decided by the BCCI but by the Indian government. It is our government that decides whether the exemption will be possible or not. For the record, Formula One also wasn’t given tax exemption,” a senior BCCI official told PTI.

Usually, ICC looks for an exemption on the excide duties imposed on importing TV production equipment and ticketing. But the sports channel that has rights for India's home matches is also set up in India.&nbsp;

“We understand that as the nomination process of new ICC chairman starts on Tuesday, suddenly there has been a flurry of communication. You can rest assured that T20 World Cup in 2021 and 2023 ODI World Cup is going nowhere. As far as the timeline is concerned, we had told ICC that unless lockdown is lifted, we can’t have discussions with government officials,” the influential member told PTI.

The tax issue also finds a mention in CoA document dated back to July 6, 2019, during when BCCI's legal team were in touch with a British law firm as legal cases related to ICC falls under the UK law.

Bangladesh Under-19 team lifts the ICC U-19 World Cup after beating Indian team by 3 wickets.&nbsp;

The Bangla Tigers have been declared the World Champions for the first time in the history of cricket. Their commitment towards the tournament was evident as the team arrived a month before the tournament began. They began training for the cup before any team's arrival.&nbsp;

India has won the U-19 World cup four times (2000, 2008, 2012, 2018).&nbsp;

The final face-off between the 'underdogs' Bangladesh and 'mighty' India was scheduled on Sunday. India was off to a great start, they were at 103/1. But post-Tilak Verma's dismissal, Indian middle-order fell consistently until they were all out on 177 in 47.2 overs.&nbsp;

Indian opener Yashaswi Jaiswal scored the most for the team.&nbsp;

In reply, Bangladesh had a slumpy start, they were down with a loss of six wickets at 106. Until their skipper, Akbar Ali's 43 (not out) got the team back on track. A brief rain break meant a revised target of 170 from 46 overs, with Rakibul Hasan scoring the winning run to secure a three-wicket victory. Bangladesh chased the total in just 42.1 overs. &nbsp;

Bangladesh's captain was the adjudged the Man of the Match after his brave performance for his team, he said: "When I entered, we needed a partnership. I told my partner that and we shouldn't lose a wicket. The planning was simple. We knew that India won't let it easy, they are a challenging side. We knew it would be a difficult chase. I am a person who wants to keep things simple. In the first half, I didn't get much chance. So was waiting for my chance."

Bangladesh Under-19 team lifts the ICC U-19 World Cup after beating Indian team by 3 wickets. The Bangla Tigers have been declared the World Champions for the first time in the history of cricket. Their commitment towards the tournament was evident as the team arrived a month before the tournament began. They began training for the cup before any team's arrival. India has won the U-19 World cup four times (2000, 2008, 2012, 2018). The final face-off between the 'underdogs' Bangladesh and 'mighty' India was scheduled on Sunday. India was off to a great start, they were at 103/1. But post-Tilak Verma's dismissal, Indian middle-order fell consistently until they were all out on 177 in 47.2 overs. Indian opener Yashaswi Jaiswal scored the most for the team. In reply, Bangladesh had a slumpy start, they were down with a loss of six wickets at 106. Until their skipper, Akbar Ali's 43 (not out) got the team back on track. A brief rain break meant a revised target of 170 from 46 overs, with Rakibul Hasan scoring the winning run to secure a three-wicket victory. Bangladesh chased the total in just 42.1 overs. So was waiting for my chance." That winning feeling 👌 The Bangladesh squad are loving life at the minute.#U19CWC | #INDvBAN | #FutureStars pic.twitter.com/jze3QNLOqM — Cricket World Cup (@cricketworldcup) February 9, 2020 × Yashaswi Jaiswal became the second Indian batsman (first was Shikhar Dhawan) to score 400+ runs in the tournament, he was declared the Player of the tournament. Beijing and Shanghai are among 10 Chinese cities that will host the Asian Cup finals in 2023, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said on Saturday.

China's desire to showcase its ability as a future <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-uefa-announces-new-playoff-system-for-2022-world-cup-qualifiers-266326">World Cup</a> host got a boost when its football association (CFA) was awarded the rights to host the quadrennial tournament at an extraordinary AFC congress in Paris in June.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/iran-china-russia-start-joint-naval-drills-270575">China</a>, which will host the tournament for the second time after 2004, had been one of four nations to initially bid to host the 24-team competition with South Korea, Indonesia and Thailand also submitting bids before pulling out.

Tianjin, Chongqing, Chengdu, Xi'an, Dalian, Qingdao, Xiamen and Suzhou will be the other host cities for the 18th edition of the continent's premier competition that will be held in June and July 2023.

"The AFC Asian Cup is our flagship competition for national teams, and I am sure that the Chinese FA and the selected host cities will deliver a tournament which is in keeping with the event's world-class status," AFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said in a statement.

"The AFC thanks the commitment shown by the CFA and these 10 great cities to be a part of this celebration of Asian football. I wish them all the very best of success in their desire to show the world that China PR can stage huge international football events."

The tournament will give China the opportunity to showcase its ability to host a major football event and comes several years after President Xi Jinping declared his desire to see the country eventually host the World Cup finals.

As a result, investment in the sport in China has skyrocketed in the six years since Xi - a well-known football fan - came to power, although the fortunes of the national team lag behind the leading nations in Asia.

China have only qualified for the World Cup once, in 2002, and have never won the Asian Cup, last reaching the final on home soil in 2004. They were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/all-you-need-to-know-about-asian-cup-2019-188242">2019 Asian Cup</a> by Iran in January.

Who would have known, the kid who raised a lot of questions after he made it to the 2011 World Cup squad, will shut their mouth by becoming India's or we can say the World's best run-scoring machines.&nbsp;

Virat Kohli broke the record by scoring 11125 runs in ODI's in the last decade.&nbsp;

Beating the previous record-holder Ricky Ponting who scored 9130 runs between 2000-2009. Sachin is third in the rankings by scoring 8571 during the 1990-1999 tenure. &nbsp;

Not only this, Kohli holds the record of most centuries in a decade. He smashed 42 centuries in ODI cricket. He stands on 70 centuries at the moment and is expected to break the record of cricketing legend Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.&nbsp;

In terms of most runs in a decade in ODI's, India's prolific opening batsman, Rohit Sharma stands second with 8249 runs with 3 massive double centuries, 28 centuries and 39 fifties. &nbsp;

Virat Kohli has overall scored 20,960 runs across all formats in the past decade with the mammoth number of 69 centuries and an average of 57.58, he tops the list.&nbsp;

Second to him in this decade is Hashim Amla who is 5000 runs short of Virat's numbers with 15,816 runs. Ponting held this record too before. He scored 18,962 runs during his dominance between 2000-2009.&nbsp;

Virat Kohli has turned out to be India's one of the best captains. He led India in 83 matches where India won 60, lost 20 and tied 1. (Other two matches were abandoned) With a win-loss ratio of 3.00, which is currently the best on the world.&nbsp;

MS Dhoni-led India to 71 victories in 130 matches, he is said to be the greatest captain of all as he is the only Captain to win all the ICC Trophies in the World. Virat Kohli right now leads India's dominating white jersey team, who stand top on the World test Championship table.

English&nbsp;cricket&nbsp;has been basking in the glory of dramatic World Cup success in 2019 but the Test&nbsp;arena did not offer any subsequent triumphs as they failed to regain the Ashes and lost last month in New Zealand.

Yet they are favourites to beat their&nbsp;hosts, who have had a year of turmoil both on and off the field.

South Africa surprisingly lost a home&nbsp;series&nbsp;to Sri Lanka earlier in the year, flopped at the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-uefa-announces-new-playoff-system-for-2022-world-cup-qualifiers-266326">World Cup </a>and was comprehensively thumped in India in October, losing all three&nbsp;tests to sit bottom of the new <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-test-championship-is-a-right-move-taken-at-right-time-feels-virat-kohli-244476">World&nbsp;Test&nbsp;Championship</a> standings.

There has also been a crisis at&nbsp;Cricket&nbsp;South Africa, who are at loggerheads with the players union, have been accused of mismanagement, losing millions on an ill-conceived Twenty20 venture and are soon to lose their major sponsors.

Several changes have recently been made, including the appointment of&nbsp;test&nbsp;cricket’s most successful captain Graeme Smith as acting director of&nbsp;cricket.

In turn, he appointed old teammate Mark Boucher to coach the side, with another stalwart Jacques Kallis brought on board as a batting consultant.

The changes are expected to infuse&nbsp;energy&nbsp;to a moribund side, who&nbsp;looked listless in India where they suffered a&nbsp;series&nbsp;of heavy defeats.

But captain Faf du Plessis will take charge of a relatively inexperienced team after a&nbsp;series&nbsp;of recent retirements from the&nbsp;test&nbsp;arena, including Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn.

Joe Root leads an&nbsp;England&nbsp;side that has James Anderson and Johnny Bairstow back and excitedly awaits to see if Ben Stokes can repeat the bludgeoning he handed South Africa in the 2015-16&nbsp;series&nbsp;and what Jofra Archer might be able to extract from seamer-friendly wickets.

A bout of illness in the&nbsp;England&nbsp;camp on the eve of the first&nbsp;test, however, means Archer and Stuart Broad are both scrambling to be fit in time to make Thursday’s team line-up.

The first&nbsp;test, from December&nbsp;26-30, at Centurion in Pretoria is followed by&nbsp;tests at Newlands in Cape Town (January&nbsp;3-7), St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth (January&nbsp;16-20) and the Wanderers in Johannesburg (January&nbsp;24-28).

England will be looking to bring a heady year to a successful close in the opening Test of their four-match series against South Africa, which starts on Boxing Day in Pretoria but must beware a home side eager to revive their fortunes.

World Cup 2022 host Qatar has given the clearest indication yet that LGBT fans will be welcome, engaging with gay supporters as it hosts the Club World Cup -- despite criminalising homosexuality.

Organisers of the 2022 soccer spectacle travelled to Britain in recent months to meet Liverpool fan clubs including the side's gay supporters' group, individuals briefed on the meeting have said.

Paul Amann, the founder of Liverpool's LGBT supporters' club Kop Outs, then undertook a fact-finding mission to Doha along with his husband in November at the invitation of the World Cup organisers.

"I'm very satisfied that their approach is to provide an 'everyone is welcome' ethos that does include respect, albeit through privacy," he told AFP. "I'm not sure if rainbow flags generally will ever be accepted 'in-country', but maybe in stadia."

Amman said he felt "paranoia is not needed as people will not pry into your personal business".

"There was clearly some apprehension, indeed my husband said on the eve of flying that he wished he had not agreed to go," the 50-year-old council worker wrote in a report for Kop Outs that he shared with AFP.

'Being gay is haram'

The Kop Outs boast 150 full members and thousands of followers on social media. It is unclear how many LGBT fans from Liverpool and the other six teams participating in the Club Cup will make the journey to the Gulf for the tournament.

Club chief executive Peter Moore said in November that Liverpool had "received a number of assurances" on the issue from Qatari authorities.

There are no openly gay or bisexual players in the English men's Premier League, but major clubs have implemented zero-tolerance policies for homophobia and embraced the "rainbow laces" campaign against discrimination.

Openly LGBT players are well represented in the English women's game however, with former Lionesses captain, the defender Casey Stoney, the best known.

The chief executive of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Nasser al-Khater said in September that "any fan, of any gender, (sexual) orientation, religion, race (should) rest assured that Qatar is one of the safest countries in the world — and they'll all be welcome here".

However he stressed that "public displays of affection are frowned upon, it's not part of our culture -- but that goes across the board to everybody".

Amann said that "if people basically observe the no PDA advice, then I can't see them being necessarily identifiable".

Though there are no openly gay venues in Doha, a handful of bars are known to be more gay-friendly and attract a loyal clientele of airline staff, hospitality workers and other expatriates.

Web users do not face restrictions accessing gay dating apps like Grindr in Qatar, unlike other Gulf countries, although users rarely display identifiable pictures.

"We are living in a society where gay people are not recognised yet. Being gay is haram to their religion," said a gay barman from the Philippines living in the conservative Muslim country who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"I think Qatar is not ready for it yet."

He shared a commonly held fear that police monitor gay apps and periodically deport homosexuals -- although there is limited evidence for this.

During a recent visit by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, three independent experts did, however, warn that at least one transgender person had been detained "until they changed their behaviour".

The experts, who are independent of the UN, also reported the detention of individuals because of crimes linked to their sexuality.

"No one should be detained because of who they love," said group member Elina Steinerte, a Latvian human rights expert.

'Police yourself'

A gay choreographer visiting Qatar from South Africa described the country as "challenging".

"The hardest thing is not being able to show any public displays of affection," said the man who also declined to be named.

"You don't quite realise how difficult it is to police yourself until you have to."

During the last World Cup in Russia, international anti-discrimination network FARE opened a match-screening area for gay and ethnic minority football fans in Moscow.

The LGBT-friendly venue opened despite queer activism being severely restricted in Russia under a 2013 "gay propaganda" law forbidding the promotion of "non-traditional sexual relationships" to minors.

Neither FIFA nor the Qatari Supreme Committee organisers have so far publicised any special measures for gay fans ahead of the World Cup.

Pavel Klymenko of FARE said, "we do have in mind something similar (for 2022) but need to see what is possible".

"Qataris are good at engaging with people, assuring them all is fine — like with the Liverpool LGBT group. But in reality, the level of tolerance for these issues might be way lower than in Russia."

World Cup 2022: Qatar opens its doors to gay football fans

Final fixtures for ICC Men's T20 World Cup announced

China will host the inaugural edition of the expanded 24-team Club World Cup, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Thursday, hailing it as a "historic decision".

FIFA's choice underlines China's growing clout in football and could be a precursor to the country eventually hosting the World Cup proper.

Infantino made the announcement after a meeting in Shanghai of the FIFA Council, the decision-making unit of football's world governing body.

It will mean many of the biggest club teams,&nbsp;including eight from Europe,&nbsp;descending on China in June-July 2021.

Infantino confirmed that China, which has made football a national priority under President Xi Jinping, had been the only candidate.

"It is a historic decision for football," he said.

"It will be a competition which every person, every child and everyone who loves football is looking forward to."

The FIFA chief said in June that his new Club World Cup could generate as much as $50 billion in commercial income, although he did not state how many editions that would cover and a source told AFP the figure was "scarcely credible".

The current Club World Cup features seven teams including the holders of the UEFA Champions League. Qatar will host the competition this year and in 2020.

The Gulf state will use the two tournaments as logistical tests for stadiums and infrastructure ahead of the 2022 edition of the World Cup, FIFA's flagship international competition.

The plan for a revamped Club World Cup,&nbsp;"a childhood dream", said Infantino -- was approved at a FIFA Council meeting in Miami in March despite opposition from UEFA and the powerful European Club Association.

It will take place every four years and replaces the Confederations Cup, an international competition that acted as a test event for countries hosting a World Cup.

FIFA also will double the funding allocated for<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/fifa-to-invest-1billion-in-womens-football-in-the-next-four-years-infantino-257832"> women's football to $1 billion</a> over the next four years after the Council rubber-stamped plans already announced by Infantino.

"The Council decided to put 500 million in addition to the 500 million already budgeted," he said.

Since the Women's World Cup in France in the summer, "women's football has moved to the next level, we need to work on that, build on that", said Infantino.

China, the world's second-biggest economy, is becoming increasingly influential in football under Xi, a known fan of the game. He and Infantino met last week.

Xi and his communist government's stated aim is for the country of 1.4 billion to host and eventually win a World Cup.

A bid for the 2030 World Cup has long been mooted.

Mark Dreyer, a Beijing-based expert on China's sports industry, said that the country has a proven track record in staging major sporting events and views a World Cup as the ultimate aim.

But Dreyer, founder of the China Sports Insider website, added: "I worry from China's perspective whether the other competing bids (for 2030) will use this (hosting the Club World Cup) against China and say they already have something from FIFA and have rewarded the country for its financial support, so give the World Cup to someone else."

Infantino largely dodged questions that could be raised over China's human rights record as a result of the Club World Cup decision.

He was also asked by AFP whether players coming to China may have to self-censor after the US National Basketball Association was hit by a Chinese backlash over comments by a Houston Rockets team executive who expressed support for Hong Kong protesters resisting Chinese control.

"Everyone can say what they want," he said.

"As far as we are concerned, we are trying to use football as a catalyst for positive, and never for negative."

Football: China to host expanded Club World Cup in 2021

England paceman Jofra Archer has been awarded a central contract for Test and white-ball cricket for the first time after making an impact during the World Cup and the Ashes.

Archer, 24, was England's leading wicket-taker in their triumphant World Cup campaign. He then took 22 wickets at an average of 20.27 in four Tests against Australia. His bowling touched speeds in the mid-90-miles-per-hour range in a scintillating debut international summer.

The Barbados-born Archer, who only became England qualified earlier this year, is one of 10 players to receive a Test deal for the 2019/20 season. Another is opener Rory Burns, who cemented his spot at the top of the order with some battling performances in the Ashes.

Spin duo Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid have lost their central Test contracts but are in a list of 12, also including Joe Denly, to be handed less lucrative white-ball deals.

Moeen was dropped from the World Cup squad towards the end of the group stage before a dismal showing in the Ashes opener. He did not appear for the rest of the series.

Rashid was a regular for England in the Test side last year but lost his place during the winter tour of the West Indies and was unused against Australia, although he is a regular in captain Eoin Morgan's white-ball set-up.

Test contracts: J. Anderson (Lancashire), J. Archer (Sussex), J. Bairstow (Yorkshire), S. Broad (Nottinghamshire), R. Burns (Surrey), J. Buttler (Lancashire), S. Curran (Surrey), J. Root (Yorkshire), B. Stokes (Durham), C. Woakes (Warwickshire).

White-ball contracts: M. Ali (Worcestershire), J. Archer (Sussex), J. Bairstow (Yorkshire), J. Buttler (Lancashire), J. Denly (Kent), E. Morgan (Middlesex), A. Rashid (Yorkshire), J. Root (Yorkshire), J. Roy (Surrey), B. Stokes (Durham), C. Woakes (Warwickshire), M. Wood (Durham).

Increment contracts: T. Curran (Surrey), J. Leach (Somerset).

England's Jofra Archer rewarded with contracts after impressive debut season

Australia great Glenn McGrath believes the form of England spearhead James Anderson could determine the course of the Ashes.

Australia holds the urn but heads into Thursday's opening Test at Edgbaston looking for their first series win in England since 2001.

Anderson, 37 on Tuesday, has been battling to overcome a calf injury but McGrath believes he could have a huge impact on the five-Test series if he stays fit.&nbsp;

"On home soil with the Dukes ball, he's the best in the world bowling in those conditions," McGrath told the Sun in an interview.

“He is a big player and if he has a big series for England, Australia will find it tough. If Australia bat well and can get on top of him, that'll make a massive impact on their chances."

The 49-year-old McGrath, working with online trading broker ThinkMarkets to encourage more young people to get into the sport, added: "But Jimmy is on his way to 600 Test wickets, which is absolutely incredible."

Anderson is now just 25 wickets shy of becoming the first fast bowler to take 600 in Tests, having surpassed former paceman McGrath's haul of 563 against India last September.

"Jimmy’s got the record now and it won't be beaten," said McGrath. "For a fast bowler to beat whatever record he sets, they are going to have to play 150 Tests-plus."

This season's Ashes is being played with last year's Dukes ball, which has a bigger seam than the one now in use for the 2019 English domestic season.

While that should benefit both Anderson and new-ball partner Stuart Broad, six-time Ashes winner McGrath thinks the 2018 Dukes will aid Australia's attack as well.

"Pat Cummins will bowl really well with it and if Mitchell Starc is swinging that new ball 150 kilometres (93 miles) per-hour-plus and bowling attacking lengths, he's a handful for anyone," he said.

"It's going to be whether our batsmen have learned and adjusted from last time they were here when they just went too hard at the ball."

Australia has won just three of their past 19 Tests in England including the match at Edgbaston in 2005 when McGrath was ruled out on the morning of the match after injuring his ankle treading on a stray ball during fielding practice.

While the former paceman refused to give one of his trademark Australia whitewash forecasts, he said Tim Paine's men could retain the Ashes.

"Teams around the world are becoming stronger at home and worse away. That is a massive concern," he said.

"But having been here for the World Cup, a lot of Australia's players have been able to adapt and adjust to conditions, to play on the pitches and get a little bit of a feel for everything.

"We have got the players to do it. But they are going to have to be on the top of their game if they are going to compete with England in their own conditions."

Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan becomes 3rd cricketer to score 600+ runs in World Cup

India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah's ability to bowl yorkers at will has been a key factor in his team's progress to the Cricket World Cup semi-finals and the right-arm pacer attributes it to the long hours he spent honing the skill.

Bumrah sealed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-india-beat-bangladesh-by-28-runs-to-make-semis-232562">India's 28-run victory against Bangladesh</a> on Tuesday with two trademark yorkers to claim the last two wickets in successive deliveries and finish with figures of 4-55.

The right-arm quick's accuracy and death-overs mastery make him a limited overs asset and the 25-year-old attributed his skill to his work in the nets.

"Whenever I practise in the nets, I practise each and every situation - be it with the new ball, be it with the old ball, or death bowling at the death," the bowler with an unusual action told reporters.

"I tick all the boxes in the nets. In the match, it's all about execution and keeping a clear head.&nbsp;

Bumrah has used the yorker delivery to good effect in the tournament to claim 14 wickets from seven matches with an impressive economy rate of 4.6.

His unique release point and accuracy render him nearly unplayable at times and difficult to score off otherwise.

NET PRACTICE

Bumrah, who likes to simulate match situations in the nets, said he did not consider himself a master of the delivery.

"I do it again and again and again in the nets. The more you do it, you get decent at it.

"You can't master it but you still try to get better at it. It's all about repetition. It's like the length ball - you have to do it again and again (in the nets) and try and replicate it in the game."

Another aspect of his bowling is to control his aggression according to the requirement of the team, he said.

"I try to keep things simple. Reading and analysing the wicket as soon as possible is important. Sometimes you run after wickets, but I focus on team goals -- what the team wants me to do right now.&nbsp;

"Not chasing success, I want to focus on my process. If I do that, eventually everything gets sorted out."

Qualifying for the semi-finals with a match to spare affords India the luxury of resting their strike bowler for Saturday's group clash with Sri Lanka but Bumrah does not want to put his feet up.

"This is my first World Cup so I'd like to play as many games as possible... The more matches you play, the more you enjoy."

India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah's ability to bowl yorkers at will has been a key factor in his team's progress to the Cricket World Cup semi-finals and the right-arm pacer attributes it to the long hours he spent honing the skill.

India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah's ability to bowl yorkers at will has been a key factor in his team's progress to the Cricket World Cup semi-finals and the right-arm pacer attributes it to the long hours he spent honing the skill. Bumrah sealed India's 28-run victory against Bangladesh on Tuesday with two trademark yorkers to claim the last two wickets in successive deliveries and finish with figures of 4-55. "I tick all the boxes in the nets. In the match, it's all about execution and keeping a clear head. "All of that preparation helps me in the matches. World Cup: India's yorker specialist Jasprit Bumrah reaps benefits of net practice

West Indies great Clive Lloyd believes Australia and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/rohit-sharmas-twin-gems-equalling-kumar-sangakkaras-record-breaking-ms-dhonis-232420">India </a>are the "standout" teams at the World Cup but has urged Virat Kohli's side to boost their batting if they are to dethrone the reigning champions.

Australia, whose only loss at the tournament so far has come against India, are already through to the semi-finals.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-match-40-india-vs-bangladesh-232302">India </a>will be assured of joining them if they beat Bangladesh on Tuesday and the two-time former champions are likely to get through to the knockout stage in any event.

Lloyd, the West Indies' captain when they won the first two men's World Cups in 1975 and 1979, has been impressed by Australia and India.

"They have been the two standout teams for me at this World Cup," said Lloyd in an ICC column published on Tuesday.

"They have understood the conditions better than any of the others," he said.

But Lloyd said India's 31-run defeat by England at Edgbaston on Sunday had exposed a weakness in Kohli's team.

"England played the right kind of game against them by attacking the spinners and they need to strengthen their batting lower down the order," said Lloyd.

Lloyd, now 74, was one of the original powerful shotmakers, which are now commonplace in one-day cricket.

The former West Indies skipper has tipped <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/australias-pat-cummins-issues-warning-to-world-cup-rivals-232269">Australia </a>left-hander Alex Carey, who scored 71 in the win against New Zealand, as a potential star of the tournament.

"Carey was a relative unknown beforehand but he bats with such maturity," he said. "He has the freedom to attack but also the technical skills needed to find the boundary,'' Lloyd said.

"He is a bolter and I have loved watching him play," he added.

The West Indies only have pride left to play for in their final group match against Afghanistan, with Jason Holder's men out of the running for a place in the semi-finals.

But Lloyd said it was "far from doom or gloom" for his old side, citing Nicholas Pooran's maiden ODI century in Monday's narrow <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-match-39-sri-lanka-vs-west-indies-231990">defeat by Sri Lanka</a> as a cause for optimism.&nbsp;

"He has done very well in this tournament and is someone we can really build around going forward," said Lloyd.

"He has a lot of things to learn but the raw ingredients are there for him to go on and become a fine player for the West Indies over the next few years," Lloyd added.

Rohit hit five giant sixes in his 104-run knock at Edgbaston and took his tally to 230 to set the record of hitting most ODI sixes by an Indian batsman in ODI format.&nbsp;

Rohit also became the first Indian batsman to hit four centuries in World Cup tournament.&nbsp;

In the match against Bangladesh, India opted to bat first post winning the toss. Sharma survived an early scare to take control against the bowlers.

Sharma, who was dropped on nine by Tamim Iqbal at deep mid-wicket, reached his second successive ton with a single off Shakib Al Hasan, celebrating by flipping his bat in the air.

But he was caught at extra cover by Liton Das off the bowling of Soumya Sarkar for 104, ending a 180-run opening stand -- the best for the first wicket in this World Cup -- with KL Rahul.&nbsp;

West Indies vs Sri Lanka: Rihanna sprinkles stardust at World Cup

Former captain Michael Vaughan on Friday branded <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-people-are-waiting-for-us-to-fail-says-englands-jonny-bairstow-231113">Jonny Bairstow's claim</a> that people are waiting for England to fail at the World Cup as "negative" and "pathetic".

England opener Bairstow was responding to criticism from Vaughan and fellow ex-skipper Kevin Pietersen after the hosts suffered consecutive losses against Sri Lanka and Australia.

Pietersen said current skipper Eoin Morgan was "scared" in the 64-run defeat by Australia, while Bairstow was played a radio clip of Vaughan saying England could be heading for their worst World Cup.

Morgan's side now face an uphill task to reach the semi-finals, with tough matches to come against India and New Zealand.

"People were waiting for us to fail," said Bairstow. "They are not willing us on to win, in many ways, they are waiting for you to get that loss, so they can jump on your throat.

"It's a typical English thing to do, in every sport."

But Vaughan hit back on Friday, saying the team had huge backing.

"How wrong can @jbairstow21 be," Vaughan posted on his Instagram account.

"Never has England team had so much support but it's you and your team that has disappointed Jonny ..&nbsp;

"WIN 2 games and you are in the semis .. With this negative, pathetic mindset I am concerned though.. it’s not the media’s fault you have lost 3 games .. !!!"

England, who have never won the World Cup, entered the competition as favourites but their much-vaunted batting line-up has stuttered badly in the past two games.

The host nation are fourth in the group table -- the last of the semi-final places -- but are looking over their shoulder at Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Babar Azam says Pakistan have the belief they can win their remaining games to complete a dramatic turnaround and reach the World Cup semi-finals following <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-pakistan-keep-semi-final-hopes-alive-after-defeating-new-zealand-by-six-wickets-230695">victory against a strong New Zealand</a> side on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The 24-year-old hit a match-winning unbeaten 101 to anchor Pakistan's reply to New Zealand's score of 237 for six at Edgbaston.&nbsp;

Captain Sarfaraz Ahmed hit the winning runs in the final over as they finished on 241-4 to win by six wickets.&nbsp;

Pakistan had a disastrous start to their World Cup campaign, losing three of their first five matches with a single victory, against England, and a no-result.&nbsp;

But Sunday's win over South Africa at Lord's and Wednesday's victory in Birmingham have revived their hopes of pulling off a sensational comeback.&nbsp;

Their next game is on Saturday against Afghanistan, who have lost all seven of their matches at the tournament in England and Wales and they finish their group fixtures against Bangladesh, who are level with Pakistan on seven points.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka are also in the hunt, one point behind but with a game in hand, meaning 1992 winners Pakistan must still rely on other results going in their favour to qualify from the 10-team group phase.&nbsp;

"Belief has been the key," said Babar, who reached his 10th one-day international hundred off 124 balls with 11 fours. "We have the belief that we will win our next two games and then look ahead."&nbsp;

Communication had been the biggest USP in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/india-beat-pakistan-by-89-runs-at-world-cup-227784">Rohit Sharma</a> and Shikhar Dhawan's enormously successful opening partnership and the Indian vice-captain wants to create the same level of understanding with KL Rahul by the time World Cup reaches the business end.

Dhawan's fractured left-hand has put Rahul in the line of fire in a stage like World Cup but his senior opening partner is confident that they will slowly be able to build up the right level of communication required in such big event.

In fact against Pakistan, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/indias-six-symbol-rohit-sharma-hits-most-sixes-beats-dhonis-record-227634">Rohit </a>allowed Rahul to take the first strike, which he normally does when Dhawan is around.

"Yeah, KL also likes to take the strike, and for me, it was important to give him that because just like me, he also has the mindset of taking the first ball. That is his comfort. He is playing his first game as an opener here, so I wanted to make sure that he's comfortable," Rohit said while making it clear what his responsibilities are as a senior player.

Rahul, on his part, knows what a big opportunity it is and he is ready to fill in the big boots of Dhawan till the time he comes back (if at all in this tournament).

"Obviously Shikhar and Rohit for the last three or four years have been such a dangerous combination having done so well. They have owned those positions. I had to wait for my chance and I am just happy that I got to bat in the top of the order," Rahul told reporters in the mixed zone.

However, during their stand of 136, there were a couple of occasions when Rohit could have nearly got run out primarily because of the lack of communication between the two.

But the champion opener is game for this new challenge as that's what international cricket is all about,&nbsp;clearing new obstacles every passing day.

"These are the sort of challenges you face - the understanding of when he wants to run that two when I want to take that single, and things like that. These are very small little things, but of course, eventually, they add up to a whole lot for the team because at that point we never wanted to get run out. That was the last thing in our mind to do that," said Rohit.

But since <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/milestone-men-rohit-sharma-kl-rahul-ensure-indias-maiden-century-partnership-against-pakistan-in-world-cup-227611">they batted for nearly 24 overs</a> (23.5 to be precise), they had communicated a lot and it's only going to improve from here on, feels Rohit.

"But we had a lot of communication (during the game against Pakistan) while we were batting, so slowly we will build on it. Now that I know he's going to open for the next few games as well,'' Rohit said.

"So that conversation between us is really, really important, and I hope that continues because it's going to only help both of us," Rohit added.

For Rahul, the biggest challenge against Pakistan was to play out Mohammed Amir's first spell, which they did with a fair degree of success.

"Look I mean, with the new ball against any bowler, you have to see off the first few overs and didn't know what to expect from the wicket as it was under covers for the first two days. It was important that we saw off the first spell," the talented Karnataka batsman said.

Amir, whether it was Champions Trophy final in 2017 or the Asia Cup T20, a year before that, he had always struck in the very first over that he bowled but this time around the Indians had done their homework.&nbsp;

"We needed to focus from ball one as he has earlier done damage in the first over itself. We were switched on from ball one and we didn't take too many chances in the first few overs. We gave their bowlers and the ball the respect it deserved and carried on from there," Rahul said.
