India, who was said to bid for the 2027 edition of the World Championship, decided against it, gearing up to formally put in the bid for the 2029 edition.</p>

<p>An AFI source claimed this, revealing what pushed them to change their strategy.</p>

<p>"Yes, we are interested in bidding for the 2029 World Athletics Championships," AFI senior Vice President Anju Bobby George told PTI on the sidelines of the AFI Annual General Body meeting in Amritsar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"India has expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics and 2030 Youth Olympics. So, it will be very good if we can host the 2029 World Athletics Championships," the legendary long jumper added.</p>

<p>While the governing body – the World Athletics, had released a timeframe for the formal bidding for the 2027 edition, which commenced earlier this year, there is no update on when the bidding process for the 2029 World Championship will open.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the last edition of the World Athletics Championship took place in Budapest, Hungry and Tokyo in Japan will host it the next time in 2025.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>India keen on bagging hosting rights of 2036 Summer Games</h2>

<p>When approached, the AFI source revealed the strategic plan behind India officially bidding for the Olympics in 2036.</p>

<p>"We want to achieve high performance, produce world beaters and win 5-6 medals in the 2036 Olympics," AFI Planning Commission chairman Lalit Bhanot said during the AGM.</p>

<p>With Bhanot being handed the responsibility of preparing the strategic plan, three separate committees are formed to provide inputs on different aspects of how to go about the planning.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, after the Tokyo 2020 Games, where India finished with their best-ever tally (seven medals, including a gold in Athletics), India will aim to better this record when the next Summer Games (Paris 2024) get underway.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Neeraj Chopra created history on Sunday, August 27 after becoming the first Indian ever to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Chopra, the ace javelin thrower, marked a distance of 88.17 metres in his second attempt to secure the yellow metal, going one up from his silver medal in the same event during the last edition in Eugene.</p>

<p>As soon as Neeraj made the throw, he knew it would be good enough and celebrated in iconic fashion, turning back before the javelin hit the ground and throwing his arms in the air. The final round, however, didn't start as Chopra would have wanted after he fouled on his first attempt. The reigning world no. 1 and Tokyo Olympics gold medalist then came back strongly to produce the best throw of the night.</p>

<p>Speaking on his win at a late-night press conference from Budapest, Hungary, Chopra said he has many more throws left in him and he will push himself more in the future.</p>

<p>“The biggest thing is I still have many more throws in me and the saying goes that ‘throwers don’t have a finishing line’. So I can push myself, it is motivation to see how many medals one can win. Winning medals does not mean we have done everything. There are so many athletes who have won multiple medals. So I will push myself much more and work harder,” said Chopra.</p>

<p>The athlete was also asked if he thinks he's the greatest athlete now, to which he replied 'he's to improve more for the same.'</p>

<p>“I won’t say I am the greatest of all time. I have to improve more. The greatest of all time is Jan Zelezny when it comes to the javelin,” Chopra said.</p>

<p>The World champ was also thrilled to have fans from around for the medal ceremony, something he missed during the Tokyo Olympics when he won the gold. The COVID-19 restrictions at the time did not allow fans to be there.</p>

<p>“It was a special moment. Crowds were missing in Tokyo. There also Adille sir (Athletics Federation of India president) was there. Today he was there too. There was a big crowd here, Indians too and there were shouts of Jai Hind. So many people came to support and watch athletics and it felt great,” concluded Chopra.</p>

<p>On Sunday, the Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra ended India’s wait of winning a gold medal at the World Athletics Championship. His gold medal feat at this year’s Worlds increases India’s tally to three, with Anju Bobby George becoming the first to win a bronze medal in women’s long jump in 2003 and Neeraj winning a silver at last year’s competition in Eugene.</p>

<p>This win also puts Neeraj in an elite category of athletes who clinched the full set of gold medals – including winning at the Olympics, the Diamond League and now the World Athletics Championship.</p>

<p>Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem also won his maiden medal at the World Athletics, taking home a silver medal, while Jakub Vadlejch, the Olympic silver medalist, stood third with his best throw of 86.67.</p>

<p>In the 12-man javelin throw final for the gold medal in Budapest, Neeraj didn’t have the best of starts, fouling in his first attempt. In his second attempt, Neeraj delivered his best shot, though that fell shy of the mark he achieved in the qualifying round before this (88.77m), but enough for him to stand tall till the end.</p>

<p>He saved his best for the final, and despite not the smoothest of conditions, he achieved a distance of above 88.</p>

<p>Besides Neeraj, two other Indians – DP Manu, the Asian Athletics silver medalist, secured sixth spot with his best throw of 84.14m, while, Kishore Jena achieved his personal best of 84.77m, good enough for him to end up fifth on the list.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, in a historic event, where, for the first time, three Indians qualified for a final in a discipline at the World Athletics, an Indian clinched the top spot.</p>

Jackson, second in the 100m final, ran a brilliant bend, was two metres clear coming into the home straight and tore to the finish to win by a street. She crossed the line with a totally expressionless face as if she expected nothing else.</p>

<p>Jackson's time beat her previous best of 21.45 - the championship record she set winning in Eugene last year. It also edged her closer to the late Florence Griffith-Joyner’s 21.34 world record from the 1988 Olympics.</p>

<p>Gabby Thomas, who came to Budapest as the fastest in the world this year with the 21.60 that won the American trials, ran an excellent race to take silver in 21.81, but was not in the same picture as the champion.</p>

<p>Fellow American Sha'Carri Richardson claimed bronze with a personal best 21.92 running in the same lane nine from where she won gold in the 100m on Monday.</p>

<p>"I feel like I am a living testimony that you can create something if you really want it and never give up," said Jackson. "Yesterday I ran the curve a little bit conservative. I think I did pretty good tonight - 21.41 is a time I cannot complain about.</p>

<p>"Even if I was pretty close to the world record it was not the thing on my mind when I ran. I will continue to work and I hope I can maintain at least this level and we will see if the world record will come.</p>

<p>"I wrote a time on my bib and it was a fast time - 21.2-something. Then I wrote beside it 21.40 for tonight and I got close to that. As for the world record - I'm close, I'm close, I'm getting there."</p>

<h2>RECORD HOLDER</h2>

<p>Griffith-Joyner's mark set when testing was in its infancy is widely considered to have been fuelled by performance-enhancing drugs but Jackson refused to accept it was tainted.</p>

<p>When asked if she considered herself the "real" record holder, she said: "I won't question a world record. If a person hasn’t failed a test it is the world record. I am the championship record holder. I am not the world record holder."</p>

<p>Thomas said: "I knew that I was coming into the final hot so that was to my advantage but it was such a fast race. "I couldn't believe it when I looked at the screen afterwards. I ran my race and I stayed composed so I am happy to come out with a silver."</p>

<p>Richardson described reaching the final of both sprints in her first global competition as "mission accomplished" but said "being able to win the 100m and get a medal in the 200m, that's a dream come true.</p>

<p>"The competition is only going to get hotter from here so I need to prepare myself for the Olympics. This week has been indescribable and I know there is better to come."</p>

<p>St Lucia’s Julien Alfred was fourth in 22.05 while Briton Daryll Neita ran a second personal best in two days of 22.16 for fifth.</p>

<p>All the medallists are expected to share the track one more time after Jamaica and the United States qualified for Saturday's 4x100m relay final earlier on Friday.</p>

When and where to watch Indian star Neeraj Chopra's javelin event at World Athletics Championships

<p>Kenya's Faith Kipyegon won a historic third world 1500m gold on Tuesday and although Qatari high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim missed out on a fourth crown, he became the first man to win five medals in the event.</p>

<p>Kipyegon produced an imperious front-running performance to add to her 2017 and 2022 titles, her face creasing in joy as realisation of her feat struck home.</p>

<p>Sifan Hassan never landed a punch and once again, as at the Tokyo Olympics, had to make do with bronze.</p>

<p>For Kipyegon, 29, it crowned an annus mirabilis having already broken three world records.</p>

<p>"I told myself, 'You are the strongest and just keep going'," said Kipyegon.</p>

<p>"I was chasing history today and I was chasing this title. I have done it."</p>

<p>Barshim tried to rouse the crowd at the National Athletics Centre as he went for his third and final attempt at 2.36m as the women's 1500m final reached its final stages.</p>

<p>But just as the women's race was a bit flat due to Kipyegon's sublime brilliance so Barshim's challenge for a fourth successive world crown ended as a damp squib, the Qatari bowing out at 2.33m.</p>

<p>He took bronze whilst victory instead went to the man with whom he shared Olympic gold in Tokyo, Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi (2.36m).</p>

<p>"I consider this bronze as history," Barshim told AFP.</p>

<p>"In any competition, our ambition is gold and victory, but this is sport.</p>

<p>"With this bronze, I became the only athlete in the history of the high jump to win five medals in the world championships and I am very proud."</p>

<p>There was a repeat victory in the men's steeplechase.</p>

<p>Morocco's Olmypic champion Soufiane El Bakkali left Ethiopia's world record holder Lamecha Girma trailing as the 27-year-old champion crossed the line in 8min 03.53sec.</p>

<p>Kipyegon, Tamberi and El Bakkali then all celebrated by jumping into the steeplechase water jump, something to be envied by the spectators who sat in sweltering heat throughout the evening.</p>

<p>Another Olympic champion, American Valarie Allman, looked downcast as her less celebrated teammate Laulauga Tausaga improved her personal best by more than four metres to win with 69.49m.</p>

<p>Allman improved from her bronze last year to silver but the look on her face suggested it was little consolation.</p>

<p>"I don't know if I have a fairy godmother or something, or my ancestors had some say in it, but I was able to do something tonight that I didn't think was possible yet," said 25-year-old Tausaga. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h2>These dangerous times</h2>

<p>Femke Bol looks in the form to replace the absent Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone as 400m hurdles world champion, sauntering through to Thursday's final (1950GMT).</p>

<p>A victory would see the 23-year-old Dutch hurdler complete a full set of medals having taken Olympic bronze and world silver last year.</p>

<p>The final, though, will be missing 2016 Olympic and 2019 world champion Dalilah Muhammad, who finished third behind Bol and failed to go through as one of the two fastest losers.</p>

<p>"In the last 100 metres I gave it my all but I knew it wasn't going to be enough," said Muhammad.</p>

<p>"It hasn't really hit me yet that I won't make the final but it was all a bit of a Hail Mary to be honest," added the 33-year-old.</p>

<p>A similar fate befell another former world champion, Steven Gardiner, in the 400m, the 27-year-old Olympic gold medallist crashing to the track and eventually escorted off in a wheelchair.</p>

<p>Gardiner's predecessor as Olympic champion, Wayde Van Niekerk, only just scraped into the final as one of the two fastest losers.</p>

<p>Van Niekerk said he was disappointed by his performance but his thoughts were with Gardiner as he knows how tough it is to cope with injury having suffered a serious one himself.</p>

<p>"It is not so nice to see somebody finishing a competition injured like that," said the 31-year-old South African.</p>

<p>"I know that coming back from the injury is very difficult.</p>

<p>"I still remember all these dangerous times. I really want to wish him a speedy recovery."</p>

Kipyegon produced an imperious front-running performance to add to her 2017 and 2022 titles, her face creasing in joy as realisation of her feat struck home. Sifan Hassan never landed a punch and once again, as at the Tokyo Olympics, had to make do with bronze. For Kipyegon, 29, it crowned an annus mirabilis having already broken three world records. "I told myself, 'You are the strongest and just keep going'," said Kipyegon. "I was chasing history today and I was chasing this title. I have done it." Barshim tried to rouse the crowd at the National Athletics Centre as he went for his third and final attempt at 2.36m as the women's 1500m final reached its final stages. But just as the women's race was a bit flat due to Kipyegon's sublime brilliance so Barshim's challenge for a fourth successive world crown ended as a damp squib, the Qatari bowing out at 2.33m. He took bronze whilst victory instead went to the man with whom he shared Olympic gold in Tokyo, Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi (2.36m). "I consider this bronze as history," Barshim told AFP. "In any competition, our ambition is gold and victory, but this is sport. "With this bronze, I became the only athlete in the history of the high jump to win five medals in the world championships and I am very proud." There was a repeat victory in the men's steeplechase. Morocco's Olmypic champion Soufiane El Bakkali left Ethiopia's world record holder Lamecha Girma trailing as the 27-year-old champion crossed the line in 8min 03.53sec. Then I started feeling like I could push myself and I warmed up better by the fifth throw,” Chopra told the media. The 25-year-old will shift his training base to Switzerland’s Magglingen before the World Athletics Championships in August.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/with-eight-months-from-tokyo-2020-venue-preparations-enter-final-stretch-263688">Tokyo 2020</a> organisers announced the rescheduling on Wednesday, following discussions with the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/russia-recieves-a-four-year-olympic-ban-266130">International Olympic Committee </a>and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/world-athletics-championships-bolt-pulls-up-injured-in-final-race-of-his-career-397">World Athletics</a>, to ease the burden on National Olympic Committees and athletes travelling to northern Japan.</p>

<p>It now means that all the marathon and race walk events are scheduled to be held on four consecutive days, from August 6 to 9, with the men's marathon remaining on the final day of the Games, as per tradition.</p>

<p>"Athletes’ health and well-being are always at the heart of our concerns, and the decision to move the marathon and race walk events to Sapporo shows how seriously we take such concerns," the IOC’s Athletes’ Commission chair, Kirsty Coventry, said in a statement.</p>

<p>Both marathons will start at 7.00 am local time. The women's marathon was initially set for August&nbsp;2.</p>

<p>The IOC stunned Games organisers in October by announcing the marathon, one of the most prestigious events at any Olympics and one especially beloved in Japan, would be moved to the northern Japanese city of Sapporo to avoid the worst of Tokyo's summer heat.</p>

<p>Tokyo temperatures in July and August, when the city will host the Games, regularly exceed 30 degrees Celsius with high humidity adding to the discomfort.</p>

<p>Additionally, organisers wanted to make travelling to Sapporo as easy as possible for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/nocs-confident-tokyo-2020-can-overcome-heat-water-quality-issues-244462">National Olympics Committees</a> (NOCs).</p>

<p>"There are some countries with the same person (coaches and officials) taking charge of both marathon and race-walking, or the same person taking charge of both male and female events," explained Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto on Wednesday.</p>

<p>"They (would) have to go back and forth (if marathon and race-walking are held in the separate schedule) and it produces extra costs.</p>

<p>"So there was a request to make the schedule as consecutive as possible."</p>

<p>The October decision did not go down well with organisers, who had already done extensive planning for the events, including a series of cooling measures for the athletes, nor with the Tokyo governor, who reluctantly consented to the move.</p>

<p>The number of new norovirus cases is a steep drop-off from the 42 new cases confirmed on Thursday and 54 a day earlier.</p>

<p>The virus had broken out in the leadup to Friday`s opening ceremony in Pyeongchang and led to some 1,200 security staff being quarantined. Organisers had to call in military personnel to replace them.<br />
