The White House has defended its decision to shoot down flying objects. It says that shooting down of four flying objects in the last two weeks was out of an abundance of caution.

United States President Joe Biden, late Saturday (February 11) hosted both Republican and Democratic governors for a black-tie event at the White House, during which he appealed to them to work across political divides for improving American lives and rebuilding the economy following the COVID-19 pandemic and the disruptions caused by it. The dinner at the White House was attended by the members of the National Governors Association for the first time during the Biden administration.

“We’re the United States of America. We can get big things done if we do it together,” said the US President while addressing Vice President Kamala Harris, 31 governors which also included both associations’ leaders, Republican Governor, Spencer Cox of Utah and Democratic Governor, Phil Murphy of New Jersey at the State Dining Room. Biden referred to some of the recent laws around investing in infrastructure and domestic manufacture of semiconductors by both parties as evidence of “some bipartisan progress”.

“I think when we work together it works,” said Biden, adding that he’d work on being “a little bit less partisan” and also praised the work done by the governors. He also spoke about how while Republicans and Democrats may not always agree, but when they work together it has made a difference. Notably, Republican Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida did not attend the event.

The dinner for the governors is typically hosted at the White House but was held last year at Mount Vernon, George Washington’s Virginia estate and virtually in 2021 due to COVID-19 making this the first one of the Biden administration. “It’s symbolic to have Republicans and Democrats breaking bread together,” said Utah governor Cox. He added, “This is what is missing in our country. It's hard to hate up close.”

The Republican vice-chair of the National Governors Association also spoke about how even Americans want to see more collaboration across the political aisle. He also thanked the US President and First Lady, Jill Biden before introducing his Democratic counterpart Murphy.

Country-western singer Brad Paisley also performed at the event and played his song “American Saturday Night”. After the dinner, Paisley told the crowd that he swapped out the second line which mentions Russia because “I don't do that anymore,” reported Reuters.

Additionally, Biden, who does not drink alcohol, gave a toast with his left hand, something that was told to him by his grandfather, he explained, when you don’t have alcohol in the glass. Similarly, Cox, who also does not drink, followed suit, telling the room it was ginger ale, reported the Associated Press.

The White House announced on Friday (February 10) that Communications Director Kate Bedingfield was planning to step down from her position soon. She will be replaced by Ben LaBolt. He is a veteran of Barack Obama's presidency.

The White House said Bedingfield, who opted to stay on last summer after announcing plans to depart, will leave at the end of February.

Bedingfield has been President Joe Biden's communications director since he took office in January 2021. Before that, she was deputy campaign manager for his 2020 presidential campaign.

LaBolt will be the first openly gay White House communications director, the White House announcement said.

He worked in the Obama White House as a deputy press secretary and as national press secretary for the Obama-Biden re-election campaign in 2012.

LaBolt served as the head of communications for the Supreme Court confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. In addition, he served during the Biden-Harris transition in late 2020 and early 2021 as an adviser on nominations.

In a statement, Biden said Bedingfield has been "a critical strategic voice from the very first day of my presidential campaign in 2019 and has been a key part of advancing my agenda in the White House."

"Ben has big shoes to fill. I look forward to welcoming him back as a first-rate communicator who’s shown his commitment to public service again and again, and who has a cutting-edge understanding of how Americans consume information," he said.

At White House meet, Joe Biden and Brazil President Lula vow to protect democracy

The United States masterminded a multi-nation effort to carry out the bombing of Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea last September, as per a new report by Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist Seymour Hersh. The White House has rejected the report.

Gravitas: Nord stream bombing masterminded by US: Report

Raking up the controversy around Nord Stream blasts, Russia on Thursday said those behind it must be exposed and called for an international probe, after Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Seymour Hersh claimed the US Navy divers had blown up the gas pipeline.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Hersh's blog needs more attention and the Western media must cover it fully. Peskov called for an international investigation into the blast of 1,224 km (760-mile) long pipelines. He added that the world needs to know the truth. He further cautioned that the blog must not be dealt with as a primary source of what had happened.

Dismissing a blog published by the journalist which accused the United States of orchestrating the Nord Stream gas pipelines' explosions, the White House, earlier in the day, said that it is "utterly false and complete fiction".

Hersh had published a report claiming that the explosions were carried out on the directions of US President Joe Biden last September.

"This is utterly false and complete fiction," said White House National Security Council's spokesperson Adrienne Watson. The spokesperson of the State Department and the CIA reiterated the same.

In his report, Hersh claimed that Norway had assisted the US Navy in planting explosives on the Nord Stream gas pipelines which run under the Baltic Sea between Germany and Russia last June and three months later, had detonated them.

White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson called the report published by Hersh on the Substack web service as “complete fiction”.

The Nord Stream gas pipelines were part of the multibillion-dollar infrastructure projects, which were set up to supply Russian gas to Germany through the Baltic Sea.

After the blasts took place in the exclusive economic zones of Sweden and Denmark, both nations concluded that the pipelines were deliberately targeted, however, they did not say who might be responsible for the blasts.

The United States along with NATO had called the blasts "an act of sabotage". The West was blamed by Moscow for the unexplained explosions which led to the ruptures.

Hersh claimed the decision to damage the pipelines, which were closed but contained residual gas, was made by US President Joe Biden in secrecy to cut off the ability of Moscow to mint billions of dollars by selling natural gas to Europe.

He further added that the US believed Russia had political leverage over western Europe and Germany due to the pipelines and that blowing up the pipelines can weaken the country's offensive against Ukraine after it invaded the latter.

The foreign ministry of Russia on Wednesday said that the United States needs to answer a few questions and explain its role in the explosion of pipelines.

India, US officials chalking out plans for PM Modi’s visit to White House: Report

Global oil major ExxonMobil Corp on Tuesday informed it reaped a record net profit of $56 billion last year as oil prices touched record highs due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

Exxon beat its own record of $45.2 billion in profits set way back in 2008 when oil prices hit $142 a barrel. Moreover, the figure was more than double the profit it managed in 2021 ($23 billion).

After Exxon released its earning report, the White House responded and said it was 'outrageous' that a western oil company recorded such profits while ordinary Americans suffered.

"It’s outrageous that Exxon has posted a new record for Western oil company profits after the American people were forced to pay such high prices at the pump amid Putin’s invasion," said Abdullah Hassan, White House assistant press secretary.

Much of the criticism for oil companies such as Exxon stems from the fact that they use the profits to repurchase the shares, distribute dividends, instead of increasing the production capacity which could bring down the prices.

"The latest earnings reports make clear that oil companies have everything they need, including record profits and thousands of unused but approved permits, to increase production, but they’re instead choosing to plow those profits into padding the pockets of executives and shareholders while House Republicans manufacture excuse after excuse to shield them from any accountability," added Hassan.

With Exxon managing record profits, the debate regarding levying a windfall tax on the company has once again gained pace as critics demand more scrutiny of oil companies.

While the US is yet to take a call, the European Union imposed a windfall tax on the company in Q4 which reduced its earnings by $1.3 billion.

The Texas-based American company is currently suing European Union in a bid to block paying the tax.

US President Joe Biden has named Jeff Zients, a longstanding aide who supervised his massive COVID-19 response operation, as the next White House Chief of Staff. Zients previously served in the Obama administration.

Ron Klain, who has held the role for more than two years, will be replaced by Zients. A formal transition ceremony would take place at the White House the following week, as per President Biden.

For an administration that has seen minimal turnover at its top ranks and across the Cabinet, the transition is the first significant personnel change.

Zients, 56, will be entrusted with overseeing White House operations, at Biden's key two-year point, when the Democratic administration transitions from enacting ambitious goals to implementing those policies and fending off Republican attempts to undermine the accomplishments.

Who is Jeff Zients, soon to replace Ron Klain, as White House chief of staff?

According to reports, US President Joe Biden is set to name Jeff Zients as his next White House chief of staff, after it had emerged on Saturday that the president's current chief, Ron Klain, plans to step down.

Reports: US President Joe Biden to name Jeff Zients as new White House chief of staff

In the most significant of the guard in two years, White House Chief of Staff Ron Klaine is expected to step down in coming weeks. He has been reportedly telling his colleagues in private since November mid-term elections that he is "ready to move on".

White House Chief of Staff to step down; search of replacement underwent, says reports

Since last week, United States President Joe Biden has come under fire after his attorneys first acknowledged that he has been in possession of classified documents from when he served as the vice president in the Barack Obama administration from 2009 to 2017. However, over the week additional documents were found at Biden’s personal residence in Wilmington, Delaware, said his attorney in a statement on Saturday. This comes amid the ongoing investigation of why classified documents were kept at the incumbent US president’s home and office by the Attorney General, Merrick Garland, appointed special counsel.

How many documents have been found and where?

So far, there have been three different announcements about finding classified documents from Joe Biden’s time as vice president. The first set of documents was reportedly discovered by Biden’s personal lawyers back in November at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington, DC, as per media reports.

However, the White House later acknowledged the claims. At the time, Richard Sauber, special counsel to the president, in a statement had said that they found the documents while “packing files housed in a locked closet to prepare to vacate office space” which Biden used sometimes as an office space between 2017 and 2020.

“The White House is cooperating with the National Archives and the Department of Justice regarding the discovery of what appear to be Obama-Biden Administration records, including a small number of documents with classified markings,” said Sauber. He added, “On the day of this discovery, November 2, 2022, the White House Counsel’s Office notified the National Archives. The Archives took possession of the materials the following morning.”

Subsequently, days later, another media report emerged which said that a second of classified documents have been found, this time at Biden’s home in Wilmington, Delaware. On Thursday (January 12), the incumbent president’s lawyers and the White House acknowledged that documents were found in December in his garage at his house in Delaware.

The most recent disclosure took place over the weekend when the White House lawyer in a statement said that a total of six pages of classified documents were found during a search of Biden’s private library in his home in Delaware.

“While I was transferring it to the DOJ officials who accompanied me, five additional pages with classification markings were discovered among the material with it, for a total of six pages,” said Sauber on Saturday. He added, “The DOJ officials with me immediately took possession of them.”

However, his statement did not address why the Biden administration waited for two days to give this update while the White House was already facing scrutiny for not disclosing the discovery of the initial documents found at the president’s Washington office.

Notably, no documents were found at Biden’s second home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. This most recent development took the total number of documents marked classified or top secret found at Biden’s home and previous office to at least 20, out of which nearly 10 were found at the think tank in Washington, a federal law enforcement official familiar with the investigation told CBS, on Saturday.

One of the biggest questions concerning the documents at the moment remains about their content which is not known since it is believed that much of the case would hinge on the sensitivity of the information. A report by CNN last week said that some documents found at Biden’s office included intelligence and briefing materials on “Ukraine, Iran and the United Kingdom”, however, nothing has been officially confirmed about the same.

Who is the special counsel appointed to oversee the investigation?

In light of the recently found classified documents and Biden’s apparent mishandling of official records, on Thursday, Garland appointed special counsel Robert Hur a former US attorney from Maryland to oversee the Justice Department probes into the case.

“This appointment underscores for the public the department’s commitment to both independence and accountability in particularly sensitive matters, and to making decisions indisputably guided only by the facts and the law,” said Garland addressing the press, last week.

A special counsel is essentially an attorney appointed, in this case, Hur when the DOJ perceives it having a conflict or deems that it would be in the public interest to have someone outside of the government handle an investigation.

What have Biden and the White House said?

The incumbent US president was first questioned about the discovery of the documents, on Tuesday (January 10) while he was attending a trilateral summit with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Mexico City. “I was surprised to learn there were any government records that were taken there to that office,” said Biden asserting that he did not know about documents being taken to his private office after he had left public service.

Meanwhile, Biden’s attorney Sauber and the White House have previously said that they are “confident that a thorough review will show that these documents were inadvertently misplaced, and the president and his lawyers acted promptly upon discovery of this mistake.” The White House attorney also said that Biden’s lawyer “immediately and voluntarily” handed over the documents found and will move to refer specific questions to the special counsel’s office moving forward.

Subsequently, Biden told reporters at the White House that he was “cooperating fully and completely” with a Justice Department investigation, on Thursday. He added, “It’s not like they’re sitting out in the street…People know I take classified documents and classified material seriously”. Furthermore, Biden’s personal attorney, Bob Bauer, attempted to explain why they haven’t been forthcoming about the discovery of the documents.

“The President’s personal attorneys have attempted to balance the importance of public transparency where appropriate with the established norms and limitations necessary to protect the investigation’s integrity,” said Bauer in a statement, on Saturday.

He added that such considerations are important to avoid the public release of detail relevant to the investigation while it is ongoing as it might complicate the ability of authorities to obtain information “readily and in an uncompromised form.” This includes information about the witnesses, documents, and events involved in the case.

Will Biden face legal action?

So far, it does not seem likely that the US president will face criminal charges as several reports citing experts have noted. As it would only be considered a crime by the Justice Department if the retention or removal of classified records is intentional and makes it an offence if a person “knowingly” removes classified documents and stores them in an unauthorised way.

Additionally, prosecutors would not pursue charges if it is proven that Biden accidentally or unknowingly retained documents. In a statement, Representative Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives Oversight Committee, had earlier said that Biden’s lawyers appeared to have taken “immediate and proper action” after discovering the documents and that he trusts that the attorney general will “make an impartial decision” about further action.

Furthermore, he also rejected the comparisons between the ongoing investigation and the probe into former US President Donald Trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents called the two cases "apples and oranges," on CNN’s “State of the Union”.

Republicans criticise Biden administration

House Oversight Committee Chairman and Kentucky Republican, James Comer, on CNN’s “State of the Union”, said, “We would never have known about the possession of the classified documents were it not for investigative reporting by CBS that somehow got a leak to determine that this had happened prior to the election.” He also criticised the Biden administration and its handling of classified documents and sought additional information on the ongoing investigation from National Archives and the DOJ.

He added, "My concern is that the special counsel was called for, but yet hours after that we still had the president's personal attorneys, who have no security clearance, still rummaging around the president's residence looking for things." Comer also went on to call Biden's residence in Delaware a "crime scene" after the documents were discovered.

In the context of Biden's criticism of Trump for mishandling documents, the new chair of the House committee also said, "While he was doing this, he knew very well that he himself had possession of classified documents so the hypocrisy here is great."

Meanwhile, House Speaker and California Republican, Kevin McCarthy in an interview with Fox News said that the House will have a role in overseeing in the proceedings of the Biden investigation. Earlier this week, he had also said that there is no need for a special prosecutor and that the US Congress should be the one investigating Biden, reported ANI.

Along similar lines, during the Fox interview, he said, "They apply a special counsel, but how many agents do they apply to that and apply to President Trump as well?" and described it as "hypocrisy".

Cases of alleged mishandling of documents: Biden and Trump

Speaking of the alleged mishandling of classified documents, Biden’s case also came to light at a time when former US President Trump is facing a special counsel of his own as well as a federal criminal investigation for his handling of classified materials. Notably, both the former and the current US presidents should not have had classified documents in their possession as they are supposed to be handed to the legal custody of the US National Archives during a presidential transition period by the respective administration.

However, many have pointed out the similarities between the two cases but highlighted the key difference in how easily the documents were returned to the authorities as well as the response to the incident. In Biden’s case, his attorneys and administration have so far claimed that the documents were promptly returned to the US National Archives upon their discovery.

On the other hand, when classified documents were found at the former president’s private club and residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida there was a series of events which are still under investigation. Initially, National Archives requested documents that it believed were in Trump’s possession in May 2021 and tried to collect the documents for over a year without any success.

It was later found that the 15 boxes of documents that Trump returned last year contained classified materials and consequently the matter was referred to the DOJ which issued a subpoena that sought the return of all the official documents. Subsequently, they also asserted that the former US president does not have any more documents.

However, department officials accused Trump’s representatives of not fully complying with a subpoena prompting them to return to his Palm Beach estate with a search warrant. This was also amid concerns of possible obstruction and following the search, the agency recovered an additional 13,000 documents that were in the former president’s possession out of which at least 10 were marked classified.

It is this series of events that put Trump at a real risk of obstruction which special counsel Jack Smith is currently investigating. “When is the FBI going to raid the many homes of Joe Biden, perhaps even the White House? These documents were definitely not declassified,” said Trump, late Monday, in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, as per Al Jazeera.

Cases of alleged mishandling of documents: Biden and Trump Speaking of the alleged mishandling of classified documents, Biden’s case also came to light at a time when former US President Trump is facing a special counsel of his own as well as a federal criminal investigation for his handling of classified materials. US President Biden classified documents investigation: What we know so far

The White House announced on Saturday that President Joe Biden's lawyers uncovered more classified papers at his residence in Wilmington, Delaware, than was previously reported. Biden's private library was searched, and six pages of classified documents were discovered, as per a statement from White House attorney Richard Sauber. There was only one page discovered, according to prior statements from the White House.

The most recent revelation adds to the finding of documents from Biden's tenure as vice president that were made in November at his old offices at the Penn Biden Center in Washington and in his garage in December. Former US attorney Robert Hur is investigating any possible improper handling of private information and government documents from the Obama administration.

The Justice Department has generally set a high threshold before filing criminal charges in situations involving the improper handling of classified material, with the requirement that someone must have had the intent to breach the law rather than have acted carelessly or negligently. It is a crime to "knowingly" remove classified papers and keep them in an unlawful manner, according to the main laws controlling their unauthorised removal and retention.

US President nominates Indian-American Richard Verma to top diplomatic post in State Department

US President Joe Biden is expected to meet his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Wednesday, CNN reported quoting sources.

According to the report, preparations are underway for both leaders to meet at the White House, where the discussions would largely surround providing military aid to Kyiv.

Though what they would discuss has not been revealed due to security reasons, reports claim that it will be related to providing a new defence assistance package that will include Patriot missile systems. There are also reports of Zelensky's possible address to Congress later in the day.

Notably, this would be Zelensky’s first trip outside Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in February this year. He has only appeared virtually at international summits to make his case for more military funding.

So far, White House officials have remained tight-lipped on the potential meeting. Even the US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to divulge further information.

According to AP news agency, she has urged all lawmakers to be present for Wednesday evening’s session.

“We are ending a very special session of the 117th Congress with legislation that makes progress for the American people as well as support for our Democracy,” Pelosi wrote Tuesday in a letter to colleagues. “Please be present for a very special focus on Democracy Wednesday night.”

US President Joe Biden and Ukraine's Zelensky to meet at White House on Wednesday

President Joe Biden stated on Tuesday (13 December) that although there is still work to be done, the inflation rate in the United States is decreasing and things are moving in the right direction.

"It will take time to get inflation back to normal levels, I want to be clear about that. We could have setbacks when we go from unstable growth to one that is more steady. There is nothing we should take for granted "he stated.

“We learned last month that the inflation rate came down, down more than experts expected,” Biden said, speaking from the White House. “In a world where inflation is rising in double digits in many major economies around the world, inflation is coming down in America.”

The core consumer price index, which economists consider to be the main indicator of inflation and exclude the cost of food and energy, increased just 0.2 per cent in November. The monthly gain is the smallest in over a year. Core CPI expenses were up 6 per cent from a year earlier, according to the Labor Department's report, which was issued on Tuesday.

Food and energy are included in the overall CPI, which increased by 7.1 per cent over the last 12 months and 0.1 per cent from the previous month.

The Fed may be able to accomplish the desired "soft landing" and prevent a significant economic recession as a result of the easing, which shows that the Fed's interest rate rises may be having the desired effect.

The study is probably going to reassure the Fed and Jerome Powell, the head of the central bank. The Fed is anticipated to only raise interest rates by a half-point at the end of its meeting on Wednesday, as compared to the three-quarter point raises it has implemented this year.

Standing with Cecilia Rouse, Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, and Brian Deese, Director of the National Economic Council, Biden expressed his expectation that prices will return to normal by the end of the year, if not before. But he emphasised that he was unable to forecast that.

The president admitted that many Americans are now having financial difficulties. He urged Americans to stick with their current course, saying that the good economic news proves that his economic policies are effective.

Sam Smith performs at White House as US President Joe Biden signs Respect for Marriage Act

The White House on Monday (December 12) lashed out at Elon Musk after the billionaire called Dr Anthony Fauci to be prosecuted for his handling of the pandemice. Dr Fauci is among the foremost expert on infectious diease in the US and who is a hate figure for many people on the right end of the political spectrum.

"These are incredibly dangerous, these personal attacks that we are seeing," said White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre, in response to the weekend tweet by Musk that subsequently went viral.

"They are disgusting and they are divorced from reality," she said.

Musk, who is now owner of social media giant Twitter, tweeted on Sunday to urge prosecution of Fauci.

"My pronouns are Prosecute/Fauci," Musk said, tauntingly playing on the growing practice for people to indicate their preferred gender pronouns.

Musk also posted a meme showing Fauci telling US President Joe Biden, "Just one more lockdown, my king," in apparent criticism of the coronavirus mitigation measures initially taken in parts of the country in the first year of the pandemic.

Former US president Donald Trump and other conservatives in the country had focussed their criticism of Fauci during the height of the pandemic. Fauci even faced death threats and had a security team assigned to protect him.

"These personal attacks that we've been seeing are dangerous on Dr. Fauci and other public health professionals as well," said Jean-Pierre.

"Dr. Fauci has served under seven Republican and Democratic presidents. We cannot forget that.... His work on infectious disease from HIV Aids to COVID has saved countless lives," she said.

"We are fortunate, I should say, that he has devoted his career and his life and his exceptional talent to America's public health."

Republican lawmakers have pledged to grill Fauci when they take control of the House of Representatives in January, after locking horns repeatedly with the top immunologist over Covid vaccines, mask mandates and other pandemic-related issues.

Fauci is due to step down this month as President Joe Biden's chief medical advisor as well as director of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases.

"We are fortunate, I should say, that he has devoted his career and his life and his exceptional talent to America's public health." Republican lawmakers have pledged to grill Fauci when they take control of the House of Representatives in January, after locking horns repeatedly with the top immunologist over Covid vaccines, mask mandates and other pandemic-related issues. Fauci is due to step down this month as President Joe Biden's chief medical advisor as well as director of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases.
