After over nine months into the Ukraine war, the West has finally reached an agreement that intends to deny Russia of war resources. The G7 and EU agreed to a 60 US dollar per barrel price cap on Russian crude oil.

Russia Ukraine War: US' White House says no talks with Russian President Putin

United States President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron vowed Thursday to coordinate on the "challenge" of China and called for stability on the Taiwan Strait. "The United States and France will continue to coordinate on our concerns regarding China's challenge to the rules-based international order, including respect for human rights, and to work together with China on important global issues like climate change," said a joint statement issued by the White House.

The two leaders also pledged to support Ukraine in its war against Russia and to hold Moscow responsible for war crimes.

In a joint statement issued after their Oval Office talks, the two leaders said they were committed to holding Russia to account "for widely documented atrocities and war crimes, committed both by its regular armed forces and by its proxies" in Ukraine.

Biden and Macron also pledged to uphold the “unwavering” alliance between the two countries during the latter’s visit to the White House on Thursday. Macron was greeted by service members from the army, marines and the air force.

"France is our oldest ally, our unwavering partner in freedom’s cause," Biden told reporters.

Macron also emphasised on the friendship between the two countries that dates back to the US independence struggle and said, "We need to become brothers in arms once more."

The relationship between the two countries suffered a bit in the recent past with Macron blaming Biden’s economic policies for an inevitable trade war. The Inflation Reduction Act or IRA will see an investment of around $4 million into environmentally-friendly industries but several European countries have expressed their concern as it can possibly lead to a race to invest in the green economy sector.

US announces an additional $400 million military aid for Ukraine; reaffirms 'unwavering' support

Senior Russian military officials recently discussed the possibility of using tactical nuclear weapons in the Ukrainian war, sending alarm bells in the Biden administration, US media reported citing an assessment drafted by the National Intelligence Council (NIC).

However, President Vladimir Putin was not involved in the talks, the assessment by US intelligence said.

According to the New York Times (NYT), the assessment was circulated inside the US government in mid-October.

Tactical nuclear weapons are meant to be used at shorter ranges in combat as opposed to the intercontinental ballistic missiles which are designed to cause massive destruction.

Russia has a stockpile of 2,000 tactical nuclear weapons, the Pentagon estimates. However, none of them has been used in any combat, reports NYT.

Responding to the reports, John F Kirby, a National Security Council official, said that the White House had grown "increasingly concerned" about the potential use of nuclear weapons over the last few months.

But he asserted that the US saw no sign of Russia preparing for such use.

Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder Elon Musk is in talks with the White House to provide satellite broadband internet service via Starlink in Iran, says a report by CNN.

Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder Elon Musk is in talks with the White House to provide satellite broadband internet service via Starlink in Iran, says a report by CNN. The Biden administration is looking for ways to support the masses in Iran who have taken to the streets to protest against the government, ever since the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. Amini was found dead in mysterious circumstances with the Iranian public blaming the country's morality police for killing her in custody. “We have our foot on the gas to do everything we possibly can to support the aspirations of the Iranian people. That is our policy, period. At the same time, it is truly an Iranian movement led by young girls and spreading to other aspects of society. And we do not want to in any way eclipse their movement," a senior administrator was quoted as saying by the publication. “We are interested in finding ways to ensure that the Iranian people can have access to the internet on their phones and everywhere else. And so Starlink is one option, but it is not the only option," added the official. However, other senior officials were apprehensive about having Musk on board for another major theater after Ukraine. “He’s a loose cannon we can never predict,” said a senior US defence official. Read more: Elon Musk withdraws proposal to Pentagon seeking funds for Starlink As reported by WION, the US treasury department last month relaxed the internet rules in Iran despite the US still having a plethora of sanctions imposed on it. “As courageous Iranians take to the streets to protest the death of Mahsa Amini, the United States is redoubling its support for the free flow of information to the Iranian people,” said deputy treasury secretary Wally Adeyemo. “With these changes, we are helping the Iranian people be better equipped to counter the government’s efforts to surveil and censor them,” he added. Internet access is often curbed in Iran to stop protesters from posting videos on social media. In 2019, the government shut down the internet for about a week to stifle fuel protests which turned political, sparking the bloodiest crackdown in the 40-year history of the Islamic Republic. Musk and Starlink Moreover, the talks between Musk and the Biden administration come a few days after the Starlink boss demanded that the Pentagon fund his company for providing satellite broadband service in the war-ravaged country of Ukraine. One of life's staggering mysteries is how every other book or novel ends up on some kind of best seller's list. Now it looks like Donald Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner have certainly solved that mystery, per a report by Forbes. Kushner released his memoir titled “Breaking History: A White House Memoir” on August 23. The book was received moderately well but it didn't exactly break any new frontiers, both collection-wise and in terms of making it to any bestsellers list. However, two weeks later, Save America Joint Fundraising Committee, one of Donald Trump's political committees that raises money for him, surreptitiously bought $131,000 worth of books, according to a filing made with the Federal Election Commission. And like clockwork, four days later, Kushner's tome appeared in the New York Bestseller list, amongst several other books. It went on to stay on the list for the next five weeks before, presumably, the sales of the book, which may have been artificially inflated, nosedived and was forced off the list. The committee did not explicitly say if books it bought were indeed Kushner's. The purchases were mentioned simply as 'collateral: books' in the election filing. But the doubt is reinforced, as the committee is currently selling Kushner's work in exchange for donations of $75 or more, according to Forbes, thereby making sure that the book continues to do business on paper. "The biggest problem (although there are many) with Kushner’s book whether by omission, contradiction, or a self-serving recasting — is the way it glosses over the subtext that came to define and complicate Kushner’s wide-ranging White House portfolio: money," read a review by Vicky Ward, author of 'Kushner Inc'. Amid the ongoing war of words between the United States and Saudi Arabia, on Thursday, the White House claimed that Riyadh pushed other OPEC+ nations for the oil cut announced last week. According to National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, “more than one” expressed their disagreement with Saudi Arabia’s push to cut production but were coerced into the vote.

However, he said that he is not going to say which member nations and let them speak for themselves, said a report by Reuters. The spokesperson also indicated that the US showed them an analysis which indicated that there is no market basis to lower oil production, prior to the decision, which Riyadh claims was a “purely economic” decision.

Reportedly, the aforementioned analysis also showed that the oil cut could have waited till the next OPEC+ meeting. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry in a statement asserted that last week’s decision came after reaching a consensus, which also took into account the balance of supply and demand. The aim of this oil cut, the statement claimed, was to curb market volatility.

The OPEC+ decided last week to cut its production target by two million barrels per day even though the supply of oil in the world is considered to be tight, said the report. This comes ahead of the US midterm elections which will determine if incumbent President Joe Biden and his Democratic party can retain control of the Congress.
