Jared Kushner is an important aide during former United States president Donald Trump’s time at the White House. The businessman and investor, who is married to Trump’s daughter Ivanka – was involved in a number of decisions taken during the tenure and even acted as the country’s representative in the Middle East during a handful of peace talks. However, his health took a hit during that time period and in a memoir which will be published in August this year, Kushner wrote that he suffered from thyroid cancer in 2019 but that information was not disclosed to the public.

In the memoir Breaking History: A White House Memoir, to be published on 23 August, Kushner wrote that he was told about the condition by White House physician Sean Conley. He underwent the surgery later that year and that was crucial in keeping his cancer under control.

While the news was kept under wraps at the moment, Reuters quoted Kushner as saying in the memoir that he was surprised by the fact that Trump knew all about his diagnosis.

United States president Joe Biden is “doing just fine” after he tested positive for COVID-19, according to the official briefing from the White House. During his appearance on CBS, White House coronavirus response coordinator Ashish Jha said, “It is the BA.5 variant, which is about 80% of infections. But thank goodness, our vaccines and therapeutics work well against it, which is why I think the president’s doing well.”

“I checked in with his team late last night. He was feeling well. He had a good day yesterday. He’s got a viral syndrome, an upper respiratory infection … and he’s doing just fine,” he explained.

Biden, who has already received both vaccination doses and two booster shots, tested positive for the BA.5 variant on Thursday and his physician, Kevin O’Connor, said his “predominant symptom now is a sore throat”. He added that Biden is currently prescribed a daily regime of Paxlovid.

During the interview, Jha also made it clear that public will be provided with daily updates about Biden’s health and the news of any long-term absence will not be hidden.

“And obviously if he has persistent symptoms, if any of them interfere with his ability to carry out his duties, we will disclose that early and often.”

Joe Biden ‘doing just fine’ after contracting COVID-19, says White House

Donald Trump has hinted at a rally that his decision to announce another run for the White House can wait until after this year's midterm polls, but a growing number of Republicans are openly cheering for a competitive primary field in 2024.

WION Fineprint: Donald Trump to announce 2024 White House bid soon?

US President Joe Biden made a shocking revelation that he has cancer, sending shock waves across the country.

While giving a speech about global warming where he talked about the side effects of emissions from oil refineries near his hometown in Somerset, Massachusetts, Biden said, “That’s why I and so damn many other people I grew up with have cancer and why for the longest time Delaware had the highest cancer rate in the nation.”

The video was posted on Twitter by RNC Research, an account managed by the Republican National Committee.

Though the remark seemed non-serious, it created head waves on social media as soon as a video of his statement went viral. Many wondered if the president was speaking the truth or was it one of his infamous gaffes.

Before the speculations could become rife, the White House came out with a clarification saying that the 79-year-old leader was referring to skin cancer treatment he had taken before assuming the office in January last year.

White House spokesman Andrew Bates retweeted a tweet from Washington Post columnist Glenn Kessler who noted that Biden had “non-melanoma skin cancers” removed before he took office.

Former United States President Donald Trump has been the subject of a number of books published in the recent past and on every instance, some new information has come to light about his tenure at the White House. From his stance on the Black Lives Matter movement to the Capitol Hill riots, the books have provided a sneak peek at his personality and views. Now, a new book claims that former White House strategist and a major Trump ally Steve Bannon told aides that the former president lies from time to time “in order to win whatever exchange he [is] having at that moment”.

“Trump would say anything, he would lie about anything,” the book quoted Brennan as saying.

Donald Trump 'would lie about anything', new book quotes former White House strategist

US President Joe Biden was heckled by a father of a mass shooting victim. During a White House event celebrating the passage of a federal gun safety law, let's have a look at the exchange that took place.

Hundreds of abortion rights protesters waved banners and chanted Saturday outside the White House to demand the president take stronger action to protect access to the procedure recently revoked by the Supreme Court.

The estimated 1,000-strong crowd of mainly women shouted slogans like "My body, my choice" and some sat down on the sidewalk in pouring rain, with police standing by.

With President Joe Biden spending the weekend at his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware a few hours away, demonstrators called on him to do more to combat the June 24 Supreme Court ruling overturning the Roe v Wade decision of 1973, which enshrined the right to abortion in the United States.

"Stand up, Joe Biden," said Becca, 37, who traveled more than two hours to Washington from Virginia. She carried a banner reading, "Abortion on demand without apology."

She said an executive order Biden signed on Friday aiming to help women access abortion pills and travel to states where they can still get an abortion was insufficient.

"Fix this! This executive order that he put out wasn't enough," said Becca, who declined to give her last name.

"I want a world that wasn't the world that my grandmother had to live in. My mom already fought for this in the streets. We shouldn't have to be here," she added.

Another woman, Christine, came to the rally with her three daughters, one in her 20s and the other two in their teens.

"We really feel that he needs to explore the fullest extent of his power of the executive branch to ensure that women retain their rights, their reproductive rights," Christine, 50, said.

"And I am here to ensure that my daughters don't have to go back 50 years in time to the days where abortions were happening in back alleys," added Christine, who also declined to give her last name.

Biden, whose room for maneuver on the issue is limited, has come under fire for perceived inaction since the court ruling.

As he signed the executive order Friday, he called on Americans to vote en masse and elect pro-choice lawmakers in November and give him firm control of Congress, so he can codify abortion rights into federal law and bypass the Supreme Court ruling.

A lot of people were not happy with Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida saying that the state will not order or distribute COVID-19 vaccines for children under the age of 5. Florida was the only state in the United States to not place advance orders for the vaccines which were earlier authorised by Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The White House was also extremely critical of the decision, and they announced on Friday that the doctors in Florida will now be able to directly order the vaccine from the federal government. The orders will be sanctioned once the vaccines receive the final approval from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the next few days.

Florida doctors can order COVID-19 shots for children under 5, says White House

The White House on Thursday said it had an operational plan to deliver 10 million doses of Covid vaccine for the nation's youngest children by June 20, pending clearance by regulators.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will convene a panel of experts on June 15 to weigh recommending the Pfizer vaccine for children aged six months through four years given in three doses, and Moderna's vaccine for those aged six months through five years given in two shots.

Both appear safe and effective, according to results announced by the companies, though the FDA's independent analysis of the data should be posted in a few days' time.

Children under five are the only age group not yet eligible for immunisation against Covid in most countries, a source of concern for many parents. FDA authorization is widely considered the global gold standard.

Severe disease from Covid is very rare among under-fives but can occur, with 482 US deaths in this age group since the start of the pandemic, or about 0.1 per cent of all deaths, according to official data.

Children can also contract a rare post-viral condition called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), which has affected some 8,525 US children and killed 69.

Like adults, some children who get Covid may go on to develop long Covid, with new, ongoing or returning symptoms, including brain fog and fatigue.

United States prepares to vaccinate children aged six months to four years

On World Oceans Day, the White House announced a new national marine sanctuary to preserve the Hudson Canyon. The proposal includes designating the largest undersea canyon on the Atlantic coast as one of the nation's next underwater parks. Hudson Canyon is an ecological hotspot located approximately 100 miles off the coast of New York and it reaches depths of 2.5 miles.

As per the proposal by US President Joe Biden's administration, Hudson Canyon would become a national marine sanctuary. The canyon is a vast gorge in the Atlantic Ocean and is home to endangered whales, sharks and sea turtles. Hudson Canyon would receive permanent federal protection.

Media reports noted that Hudson Canyon would be off-limits to oil and gas drilling. Such restriction is aimed at protecting marine life and cold-water coral. Importantly, before finalisation, the proposal will undergo a public comment period through August 8.

As quoted in an NYT, Richard W Spinrad, the administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said in a statement: "A sanctuary near one of the most densely populated areas of the Northeast U.S. would connect diverse communities across the region to the ocean and the canyon in new and different ways." Spinrad further added that the sanctuary would leave "a lasting legacy for future generations."

As per the Wildlife Conservation Society’s New York Aquarium, Hudson Canyon would be the first national marine sanctuary off New York and New Jersey.

Biden's administration also announced that the United States will phase out single-use plastics in national parks and other public lands over the next decade.

White House announces new national marine sanctuary to preserve Hudson Canyon

Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey made an emotional speech on mass shootings at the White House. McConaughey, a native of Uvalde visited the school where 19 children were shot dead, in our next report we bring you some of the excerpts.

Matthew McConaughey's emotional White House speech on gun control

Known to speak his mind on issues concerning the US, Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey met with the US president Joe Biden on Tuesday to discuss the recent tragic killing of school kids in Uvalde Texas. McConaughey is a native of Uvalde and had earlier urged for stricter gun laws in the aftermath of the shooting incident that left 21 dead in a school including two teachers.

Post his meeting with Biden, McConaughey addressed the media at the White House and urged the US government to take strict action on gun violence in the state. The actor gave an emotional speech and shared stories of those who were killed in last month's elementary school shooting.

Students of grades 2, 3 and 4 of the Robb Elementary School in McConaughey's hometown were shot dead on May 24 by an 18-year-old gunman wielding a semi-automatic rifle.

McConaughey had earlier contemplated on running for governor's post from Texas but had ultimately ruled it out. On Tuesday, the actor had a brief meeting with President Biden at the White House and then appeared at the daily news briefing.

The 52-year-old actor described growing up in the South Texas town.

"Uvalde is where I was taught to revere the power and the capability of the tool that we call a gun," he said. "Uvalde is where I learned responsible gun ownership."

McConaughey said responsible gun owners are "fed up with the Second Amendment being abused and hijacked by some deranged individuals," and urged raising the minimum age for purchasing an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle to 21.

Gun rights advocates say the Second Amendment of the Constitution guarantees the right to own and bear firearms.

McConaughey appeared to choke up several times while holding up photos of some of the child victims. He talked about their families, what they were wearing on the day they were shot, and what they wanted to be when they grew up.

The actor described meeting a cosmetologist who was asked to prepare the victims for their open-casket funerals. "They needed much more than makeup to be presentable. They needed extensive restoration. Why? Due to the exceptionally large exit wounds of an AR-15 rifle."

He gave a brief biography of each victim, slamming his fist on the lectern at one point to describe one of them.

"While we honor and acknowledge the victims, we need to recognize that this time seems that something is different," he said. "There is a sense that perhaps there's a viable path forward. Responsible parties in this debate seem to at least be committed to sitting down and having a real conversation about a new and improved path forward."

McConaughey was accompanied by his wife Camila Alves McConaughey, who was seen holding pair of shoes worn by one of the victims as her husband addressed the press. At one point, Camila even got emotional and was seen controlling her tears.

McConaughey spoke as Democrats in the US Senate said they were encouraged by talks with their Republican counterparts on firearms legislation -- but warned any compromise would fall short of the steps they say are needed to curb gun violence.

McConaughey said he visited the White House to try to turn the moment into a reality. His comments, however, were expected to have little impact.

The actor, who met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill earlier in the day to discuss gun reform legislation, asked politicians to change how they approached their job in remarks that did not single out either party. His comments, however, appeared to be intended for Republicans in Congress who have opposed gun legislation.

"Let's admit it," he said. "We can't truly be leaders if we're only living for re-election."

Matthew McConaughey makes emotional plea for gun laws at White House

Ahead of US President Joe Biden’s reported visit to Saudi Arabia, the White House heaped praise on Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in extending a ceasefire in Yemen.

The change of tone of the US administration is noteworthy considering that Biden had squarely blamed bin Salman for the killing and dismembering of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a critic of the crown prince, in Turkey in 2018.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that bin Salman and Saudi King Salman deserved credit for their roles in the truce extension in Yemen’s war.

“This truce would not be possible without the cooperative diplomacy from across the region. We specifically recognize the leadership of King Salman and the crown prince of Saudi Arabia in helping consolidate the truce,” she said.

According to reports, the US president will be visiting Riyadh and will meet bin Salman in conjunction with a trip to Europe and Israel in late June.

Though the purpose of the trip was not officially declared, it is understood that Biden is aiming at bolstering relations with Saudi Arabia at a time when gasoline prices have been spiralling in the United States.

Biden would participate in a Riyadh summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council, a regional union whose members are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, Reuters reported citing sources.

Jean-Pierre would not confirm the Biden trip is planned but said: "What the president is focused on first and foremost is how his engagements with foreign leaders advance American interests. That's as true with Saudi Arabia as anywhere else."

"While many of you may know BTS as Grammy-nominated international icons they also play an important role as youth ambassadors promoting a message of respect and positivity," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said introducing the band.

After the press briefing, the group met Biden to discuss hate crimes targetting Asians.

During the press briefing before the meet, all members of the supergroup spoke, mostly in Korean, barring RM who is the only member who is fluent in English.

"We were devastated by the recent surge of hate crimes, including Asian American hate crimes. To put a stop on this and support the cause, we'd like to take this opportunity to voice ourselves once again," the translator related. "We are here today thanks to our army -- our fans worldwide -- who have different nationalities and cultures and use different languages."

The meeting came as Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander month in May drew to a close following a sharp upswing in hate crimes against the community in the past year.

Attacks against people of Asian descent have escalated as some politicians and pundits have encouraged Americans to blame China for COVID-19, amid other tensions.

Five-year-old Jacob Philadelphia entered the Oval Office in May 2009, a few months after then-President Barack Obama took office, unaware that he would become part of America's first Black commander-in-chief.

Jacob discreetly asked a question as he watched the presidential visit with his father, then-National Security Council official Carlton Philadelphia, his mother, Roseane, and older brother, Isaac.

"I want to know if my hair is just like yours," he said to Obama in a tone so low that the then-president asked him to repeat his question.

After hearing the question, Obama remarked: "Why don't you touch it and see for yourself?"

The US president bent over, but Jacob hesitated to move his hand.

There has been a number of books written by prominent figures in the Donald Trump administration chronicling their time in the White House and most of them have made some damaging claims about the former president of the United States. Former defense secretary Mark Esper became the latest official to provide a sneak peek into how Trump ran things during his tenure as president.

Esper, in his memoir called "A Sacred Oath," wrote that Trump was quite angry with the protests outside the White House in 2020 and even said "Can't you just shoot them?".

The preview of the memoir on the Axios news website stated that "the president complaining loudly about the protests under way in Washington" over the police killing of a Black man. The protests were part of a nationwide movement in 2020 after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

"Can't you just shoot them? Just shoot them in the legs or something?" Trump was quoted as saying.

Esper was reportedly removed from his position in 2020 after he spoke against invoking the 200-year-old Insurrection Act which allows the military to be deployed in the United States, according to AFP.

Earlier, journalist Michael Bender wrote in his book that according to sources, Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley had a disagreement with Trump when it came to using the military on US grounds. The account by Esper further bolsters the possibility of a rift in Trump’s inner circle.

The book by Mark Esper is slated for release on May 10 and according to the Axios website, it has been vetted by the Pentagon and reviewed by generals and cabinet members.

Esper, in his memoir called "A Sacred Oath," wrote that Trump was quite angry with the protests outside the White House in 2020 and even said "Can't you just shoot them?". The account by Esper further bolsters the possibility of a rift in Trump’s inner circle. The book by Mark Esper is slated for release on May 10 and according to the Axios website, it has been vetted by the Pentagon and reviewed by generals and cabinet members. Kurt Campbell, a senior White House official, on Friday (April 22) arrived in the Solomon Islands for a visit.

The former US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs is expected to express concerns about a pact between the Pacific island and China.

Campbell said his delegation will also discuss "plans to open a US embassy in Honiara".

After the signing of the pact, Chinese ambassador Li Ming said "On behalf of the Chinese government and people of China, we congratulate the government of the Solomon Islands."

Earlier, the US Embassy in Papua New Guinea had issued a statement, “We do not believe importing security forces from the People’s Republic of China and their methods will help the Solomon Islands.”

“Instead, doing so will fuel local, regional, and international tensions and increase concerns over Beijing’s expansion of its internal security apparatus to the Pacific.”

In response, Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare said, “Let me assure the people of Solomon Islands that we entered into an arrangement with China with our eyes wide open, guided by our national interests.”

According to a draft of the pact, China will increase its forces in the Solomon Islands “to assist in maintaining social order.”

But Sogavare has denied the accusation made by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison that Beijing is exerting ''enormous pressure'' on the Solomon Islands.

Zhao Lijian, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, said Australia was using ''coercive diplomacy'' in the region.

In 2019, the Solomon Islands switched diplomatic ties from Taiwan to Beijing, allowing Chinese naval vessels to replenish in Honiara.

The Biden administration announced Tuesday that it is restoring parts of a bedrock environmental law, once again requiring that climate impacts be considered and local communities have input before federal agencies approve highways, pipelines and other major projects.

The administration has resurrected requirements of the 50-year-old National Environmental Policy Act that had been removed by President Donald Trump, who complained that they slowed down the development of mines, road expansions and similar projects.

The final rule announced Tuesday would require federal agencies to conduct an analysis of the greenhouse gases that could be emitted over the lifetime of a proposed project, as well as how climate change might affect new highways, bridges and other infrastructure, according to the White House Council on Environmental Quality. The rule, which takes effect in 30 days, would also ensure agencies give communities directly affected by projects a greater role in the approval process.

Brenda Mallory, chairwoman of the council, described the regulation as restoring “basic community safeguards” that the Trump administration had eliminated.

“Patching these holes in the environmental review process will help projects get built faster, be more resilient, and provide greater benefits to people who live nearby,” she said in a statement.

Administration officials said the new rule would not have major immediate impacts since the Biden administration had already been weighing the climate change impacts of proposed projects. But it would force future administrations to abide by the process or undertake a lengthy regulatory process and possibly legal challenges to again undo it.

The National Environmental Policy Act, or NEPA, was signed into law by President Richard Nixon in 1970, after several environmental disasters.

Under the changes announced Tuesday, agencies would have to consider the direct, indirect and cumulative impacts of a decision — including the effect a new project would have on neighborhoods already burdened by pollution.

The administration’s changes also encourage agencies to study alternatives to projects that are opposed by local communities, and it says the law’s requirements are “a floor, rather than a ceiling” when it comes to environmental reviews.

Republicans and some business groups are hostile to the changes, arguing that additional reviews would delay the development of badly needed infrastructure.
