Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be hosted by the Biden family for an intimate dinner on June 21, a day before the highly-anticipated State Dinner at the White House. According to reports, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden have extended an official invitation to PM Modi who has seemingly accepted it as well. The venue of the private meeting, however, has not been revealed. “We will have a very substantial arrival ceremony on the White House lawn. The night before, I expect the prime minister and President Biden and the Biden family to have some moments of intimacy where they really have a chance to sit down together,” a White House official was quoted as saying by PTI. The historic visit will kick off after PM Modi makes an appearance at the United Nations headquarters in New York to attend the International Yoga Day celebrations. Later, he will travel to Washington DC where an impressive welcome ceremony on the South Lawns has been planned. The South Lawns would later become the venue for the State Dinner which is expected to draw a huge crowd. Stakeholders from both countries have been eager to attend the event. “I think the State Dinner will be really a celebration of the US-India relations with supporters and advocates coming from India, but also around the United States. We have a saying...it’s a very hot ticket. Hardly a day goes by when I haven’t received requests from people to get the last tickets to the state dinner. I believe it will be a wonderful celebration,” said the official. First state visit for PM Modi PM Modi will be the first Indian PM since Manmohan Singh in 2009 to undertake a state visit to the US. Previously, PM Modi has visited the US several times during his nine-year tenure but it has been labelled working or official visit only. Not every visit by a foreign leader is classified as a state visit. State visits hold the highest ceremonial importance. At the same time, the state visit also symbolises strong bilateral relations. The White House has banned a transgender advocate who went topless at Saturday’s Pride event on the South Lawn. US President Joe Biden’s press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday that attendees of the event, including trans advocate Rose Montoya, engaged in “inappropriate” behaviour, which was “unfair to the hundreds of attendees who were there to celebrate their families.”

President Joe Biden underwent a dental root canal Monday with little public warning, forcing postponement of all scheduled events, including a meeting with the NATO secretary general.

The planned meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, as well as an evening diplomatic reception, "will be rescheduled for tomorrow," the White House said.

Biden underwent the root canal on a premolar tooth in his lower right jaw, presidential physician Kevin C. O'Connor said in a statement.

Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the procedure was "successfully completed. The president is doing just fine and he'll certainly be working in the residence this afternoon."

Although the White House played down the episode, Biden is 80, the oldest person ever to be president. Scrutiny of his health is intense as he bids to win a second term in 2024, taking him to 86 by the time he would leave office.

The Stoltenberg meeting was set to follow White House talks last week with the prime ministers of allies Britain and Denmark, as Biden prepares for the NATO summit in Lithuania in July.

The Western alliance is heavily involved in assisting Ukraine to defend itself against Russian invasion, with all eyes now on the fate of a much-heralded Ukrainian offensive to liberate territory.

Another big issue for NATO to resolve is choosing a successor for Stoltenberg, whose mandate ends in October.

<h2>Just 'a regular thing'</h2>

O'Connor said Biden's tooth issue began with pain on Sunday.

He was immediately examined by a team from the Walter Reed presidential hospital sent to the White House.

The team "was able to perform an examination, to include X-rays, in the White House Dental Operatory. They determined that endodontic treatment (root canal) was most appropriate. Initial root canal procedure was performed at the time, with a plan for specialized endodontal follow-up in the near future," O'Connor wrote.

The doctor said Biden "tolerated the procedure well. There were no complications."

On Monday, the president said he was "experiencing further discomfort," leading to the decision to complete the root canal, O'Connor said.

Because no public announcement was made of Sunday's dental work, questions were raised Monday about whether something more serious had happened.

Jean-Pierre dismissed this, saying the operation was "nothing unusual" and that "millions of Americans go through this."

She stressed that only a local anaesthetic was used, meaning no need for invoking the 25th Amendment and temporarily passing presidential powers to Vice President Kamala Harris.

However, the dental intervention was a reminder of how medical issues can suddenly interrupt the administration's rhythm.

Despite assurances that there had been no emergency, the root canal appeared clearly to be unplanned because of the need to postpone the two high-level meetings in the White House.

Biden's appearance at a third event – a celebration with university athletes – was cancelled less than an hour before it started, with Harris presiding instead.

Jean-Pierre said Harris herself found out Monday morning that she would take Biden's place at the event for athletes.

However, "there's nothing mysterious about it," Jean-Pierre said. "It is a regular thing that many people go through."

Is the White House hiding aliens and UFOs? Here's what an ex-intel official says

The White House said on Friday (June 9) that Russia appeared to deepen its defence cooperation with Iran and this had resulted in it getting hundreds of Iranian drones which it was using to strike Ukraine.

The White House cited newly declassified information. It said that the Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) built in Iran were being shipped across the Caspian Sea and were then being used by Russia against Ukraine.

"Russia has been using Iranian UAVs in recent weeks to strike Kyiv and terrorize the Ukrainian population, and the Russia-Iran military partnership appears to be deepening," White House spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.

"We are also concerned that Russia is working with Iran to produce Iranian UAVs from inside Russia."

Kirby said that the US was in possession of information that Russia was receiving materials from Iran which was required to build a drone manufacturing plant. This plant, said Kirby could be fully operational early next year.

"We are releasing satellite imagery of the planned location of this UAV manufacturing plant in Russia’s Alabuga Special Economic Zone," he said.

The US has previously sanctioned Iranian executives at a defence manufacturer over drone supplies to Russia. Iran has acknowledged sending drones to Russia but said in the past they were sent before Russia's February invasion. Moscow has denied its forces used Iranian drones in Ukraine. A White House official said Iran had transferred several hundred drones to Russia since August.

Kirby said that support between Iran and Russia was both ways. Iran is seeking billions of dollars worth of military equipment from Russia. This includes helicopters and radars.

"Russia has been offering Iran unprecedented defense cooperation, including on missiles, electronics, and air defense," he said.

"This is a full-scale defense partnership that is harmful to Ukraine, to Iran’s neighbors, and to the international community. We are continuing to use all the tools at our disposal to expose and disrupt these activities including by sharing this with the public – and we are prepared to do more."

<h2>Violation of UN rules&nbsp;</h2>

Kirby said that drone transfer constituted violation of United Nations rules. He added that the US would seek to hold Russia and Iran accountable.

In addition to the US, countries like Britain, France, Germany and Ukraine say that supply of Iran-made drones to Russia violates a 2015 U.N. Security Council resolution enshrining the Iran nuclear deal.

Under the 2015 U.N. resolution, a conventional arms embargo on Iran was in place until October 2020.

Iran supplied hundreds of drones to Russia for attack on Ukraine: White House

The White House and Cuba independently&nbsp;rejected a media report that said that China was planning to build a spy base on the island nation just 90 miles away from the continental USA. The initial report, published by&nbsp;The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), said that China and Cuba had entered into a secret agreement that would let Beijing set up an electronic eavesdropping facility in Cuba. This, said the report, would enable China to monitor communications across the southeastern United States. The WSJ report further said that China had paid "several billion dollars" to Cuba for this.

However, White House national security spokesman John Kirby has denied the story.

"I've seen that press report. It's not accurate," Kirby told MSNBC.&nbsp;

"What I can tell you is that we have been concerned since day one of this administration about China's influence activities around the world, certainly in this hemisphere and in this region," Kirby said.&nbsp;

"We are watching this very closely," he added.

The report in the Wall Street Journal has come amid strains in relations between the US and China. There has been friction between the countries over a number of issues, including Taiwan. White House, Cuba reject report of China building spy base on the island

White House national security spokesman John Kirby, on Friday, released a statement warning about a drone factory that Russia was working to establish "on its territory".&nbsp;

He said that the country was importing materials from Iran to build the factory and that it "could be fully operational early next year".

The White House released a satellite image of the location of the forthcoming plant in the Alabuga Special Economic Zone, which was based some 900 kilometres (560 miles) east of Moscow.

"The Russia-Iran military partnership appears to be deepening," Kirby said in a statement, citing US intelligence information.

The White House said it would release a new government advisory to assist businesses and governments "to ensure they are not inadvertently contributing to Iran's (drone) programme".

According to Washington, Russia has received hundreds of attack drones and related equipment from Iran to aid Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

As per US data, Kirby said, the drones "are built in Iran, shipped across the Caspian Sea and then used operationally by Russian forces against Ukraine."

"Russia has been using Iranian UAVs in recent weeks to strike Kyiv and terrorise the Ukrainian population," he added, referring to unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones.

Washington issued the alert on what it feels are Moscow's efforts to create Iranian drones itself.

"We have information that Russia is receiving materials from Iran needed to build a UAV manufacturing plant inside Russia," Kirby said.

According to the White House, in turn, Iran is seeking to purchase Su-35 fighter jets, attack helicopters, radars, and YAK-130 combat trainer aircraft from Russia.

"We will continue to impose sanctions on the actors involved in the transfer of Iranian military equipment to Russia for use in Ukraine," AFP quoted Kirby as saying.

Russia receiving material from Iran to build drone factory, says White House

United States President Joe Biden’s White House Pride Month event, which was expected to be the largest in the country’s history, was postponed from Thursday (June 8) until Saturday, said officials citing poor air quality due to the smoke drifting in from the wildfires in neighbouring Canada. This comes as the US president was expected to announce a number of steps to support the&nbsp;LGBTQ+ community.&nbsp;

<h2>About the White House Pride Month event</h2>

The White House, in a statement, on Thursday said, “Today’s Pride event on the White House South Lawn will be postponed until Saturday based on the projected air quality in the region.” The event at&nbsp;the White House is expected to witness thousands of guests from across the country, including LGBTQ+ families and features&nbsp;Betty Who and Baltimore DJ Queen HD.&nbsp;

The Biden administration has said previously also that it is a deliberate move by the president, a Democrat, to contrast the Republicans and others who have targeted LGBTQ+ people. “This year we’re seeing a disturbing surge in violent threats against LGBTQ community organizations,” said domestic policy adviser Neera Tanden.&nbsp;

“In too many parts of our country, LGBTQ Americans are being targeted for who they are, and that, simply put, is discrimination,” she was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Karine Jean-Pierre, the first openly gay White House press secretary,&nbsp;also spoke about how Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris as well as their spouses are strong supporters of the LGBTQ+ community.

Jean-Pierre&nbsp;said that people need to know that the US president has “their back” and “will continue to fight for them. And that’s the message that we want to make sure that gets out there.”

Notably, Biden’s own views about the LGBTQ+ community have evolved over the years in public life but his support as then-vice president in 2012 for same-sex marriage is seen as a turning point which was followed by then-President Barack Obama who publicly showed his support for gay marriage a few days later.&nbsp;

<h2>What are Biden’s proposals for LGBTQ+ community?</h2>

In late 2022, Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law which would federally recognise same-sex marriage amid concerns that the Supreme Court could reverse its legal support of such relationships.&nbsp;

Additionally, the upcoming proposals seem to largely counter the number of bills proposed and signed into law by Republican-led states which target transgender youth, ban books, and even stop teachers from discussing gender or sexuality with younger children. Recently, conservative lawmakers in several US states have also proposed or passed laws restricting drag performances.

The Biden administration is expected to announce a new coordinator in the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights which would help navigate the rise in book bans across the country. The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest advocacy organisation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals&nbsp;in the US, on Tuesday declared its first national state of emergency for LGBTQ+ individuals. Additionally, the organisation also released a guidebook which outlined laws it deems discriminatory in various states. The organisation said that it acted in response to an “unprecedented and dangerous” rise in anti-LGBTQ bills which were signed into law.

According to the HRC, more than 70 bills which they consider anti-LGBTQ were passed in statehouses this legislative session which is nearly double from last year. United States President Joe Biden’s White House Pride Month event, which was expected to be the largest in the country’s history, was postponed from Thursday (June 8) until Saturday, said officials citing poor air quality due to the smoke drifting in from the wildfires in neighbouring Canada.

United States President Joe Biden’s White House Pride Month event, which was expected to be the largest in the country’s history, was postponed from Thursday (June 8) until Saturday, said officials citing poor air quality due to the smoke drifting in from the wildfires in neighbouring Canada. This comes as the US president was expected to announce a number of steps to support the LGBTQ+ community. About the White House Pride Month event The White House, in a statement, on Thursday said, “Today’s Pride event on the White House South Lawn will be postponed until Saturday based on the projected air quality in the region.” The event at the White House is expected to witness thousands of guests from across the country, including LGBTQ+ families and features Betty Who and Baltimore DJ Queen HD. The Biden administration has said previously also that it is a deliberate move by the president, a Democrat, to contrast the Republicans and others who have targeted LGBTQ+ people. “This year we’re seeing a disturbing surge in violent threats against LGBTQ community organizations,” said domestic policy adviser Neera Tanden. ALSO READ | 'Pride is back at the White House,' Biden says, signing Pulse nightclub bill “In too many parts of our country, LGBTQ Americans are being targeted for who they are, and that, simply put, is discrimination,” she was quoted as saying by Reuters. Karine Jean-Pierre, the first openly gay White House press secretary, also spoke about how Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris as well as their spouses are strong supporters of the LGBTQ+ community. Jean-Pierre said that people need to know that the US president has “their back” and “will continue to fight for them. And that’s the message that we want to make sure that gets out there.” ALSO READ | Target holds ‘emergency’ meeting, relocates LGBTQ merchandise from June Pride month displays: Report Notably, Biden’s own views about the LGBTQ+ community have evolved over the years in public life but his support as then-vice president in 2012 for same-sex marriage is seen as a turning point which was followed by then-President Barack Obama who publicly showed his support for gay marriage a few days later. What are Biden’s proposals for LGBTQ+ community? In late 2022, Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law which would federally recognise same-sex marriage amid concerns that the Supreme Court could reverse its legal support of such relationships. ALSO READ | US mid-term elections 2022: In a first, LGBTQ candidates to contest from all 50 states Additionally, the upcoming proposals seem to largely counter the number of bills proposed and signed into law by Republican-led states which target transgender youth, ban books, and even stop teachers from discussing gender or sexuality with younger children. Recently, conservative lawmakers in several US states have also proposed or passed laws restricting drag performances. The Biden administration is expected to announce a new coordinator in the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights which would help navigate the rise in book bans across the country. White House has previously said, such bans erode democracy and have an impact on LGBTQ kids as the books banned are about them, which could contribute to more stigma and lead to isolation. Ashish Jha, the United States White House's point person for the nation's COVID-19 response will, as per reports, resign from his post next week.

Quoting the White House, the news agency AP reports that Jha will return to serving as the dean of the Brown University School of Public Health.&nbsp;He will reportedly depart from the post on June 15th and will go back to being the dean from July 1st.

<h2>Why is Ashish Jha leaving the post?</h2>

Jha's departure from the post of White House COVID-19 coordinator comes as the US federal government ended its twin virus emergencies on the coronavirus earlier this spring.

Announcing Jha's departure, US President Joe Biden in a statement said that Covid "no longer controls our daily lives."

Biden's Covid czar Ashish Jha to step down as White House Coordinator

Mike pence opened his bid for the republican nomination for the White House with a firm denunciation of former US President Donald Trump. Pence accused his former boss of abandoning conservative principles and being guilty of dereliction of duty. Remember, in January 2021, trump's supporters stormed the US Congress, in a bid to thwart the certification of Joe Biden's election victory.

US: Mike Pence tears into Trump at campaign launch, Chris Christie also hits out at him

Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie has entered the fray to win Republican Party nomination to run in US Presidential Election 2024. Christie filed his paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday (June 6). This came ahead of a evening announcement planned in Manchester, New Hampshire. Media reports suggested that Christie presents a novel challenge to current frontrunner and former US president Donald Trump. Christie may be willing to land genuinely damaging blows on the former president.

Christie (60) is a Newark native and had come sixth in New Hampshire seven years ago. He eventually endorsed Trump and even served as a key advisor. The pair fell out over Trump's refusal to accept his 2020 election defeat.

<h2>First shots</h2>

Christie has already started taking shots at Trump. Last month, he said that Trump was "afraid" of debating against serious opponents. Trump has hinted that he may skip at least on of initial two Republican primary debates. He has expressed reluctance to share limelight with low-polling opponents.

"If he really cares about the country -- and I have deep questions about that -- but if he really cares about the country, then he's going to get up there, and he shouldn't be afraid," Christie told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt.&nbsp;

Christie has attacked Trump on many issues in recent past and has highlighted the escalating criminal probes that are targetting him. Christie has trashed Trump's claims of election fraud and even called him "Putin's puppet".

"Because he will attack Trump relentlessly, Christie's campaign will get a ton of coverage in the mainstream press, which may help him do well in New Hampshire," said John Ellis, former head of Fox News Election Night Decision Desk. He was quoted by AFP.

Christie's entry into the ring has come just a day after former US vice president and Trump's former running mate Mike Pence filed paperwork to enter the growing list of candidates. Pence's entry has set stage for an unusual scene in which two running mates will be competing against each other.

The evangelical Christian plans an official campaign launch on Wednesday in the early voting state of Iowa — joining an already crowded field that includes Florida governor Ron DeSantis, being&nbsp;viewed as Trump's closest competitor.

Former governors Nikki Haley and Asa Hutchinson are also in the race, while North Dakota's chief executive Doug Burgam is due to announce his bid on Wednesday.&nbsp;

<h2>Trump is the current frontrunner</h2>

Polls are currently showing that Donald Trump has a clear lead on his rivals within the party. He leads Ron DeSantis, his closest rival, in excess of 30 points.

However, Trump is increasingly engulfed in multiple criminal investigations that have yielded dozens of felony charges in New York.

Trump critic Chris Christie enters poll ring, files paperwork for White House bid

The White House said on Tuesday (June 6) that it cannot ‘conclusively’ say what was behind the destruction of a massive dam in Ukraine. However, White House Spokesman John Kirby said that reports that the blast was caused by Russia were being assessed. Russia has been in occupation of the dam since last year.

Kirby noted that the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro River may likely have caused "many deaths" and evacuation of thousands of Ukrainians. Dnipro River separates Russian and Ukrainian forces in southern Ukraine.

Kirby told reporters the damage could have a devastating impact on Ukraine's energy security.

"We've seen the reports that Russia was responsible for the explosion at the dam," he said. "We're doing the best we can to assess those reports, and we are working with the Ukrainians to gather more information, but we cannot say conclusively what happened."

Ukraine has accused Russia of blowing up the Nova Kakhovka dam. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has claimed that it was Ukraine that sabotaged the dam.

Kyiv said the destruction of the dam — seized by Russia in the early hours of the war — was an attempt by Moscow to hamper its long-awaited offensive, which Ukraine's leader stressed would not be affected.

Kirby opined that it was too soon to discuss the effect of the development on Ukraine's long-planned counteroffensive. He did stress that Russian forces were in illegal occupation of the dam and were in control of it when the blast took place. However, Kirby said that US officials had not determined whether the blast was an intentional act.

<h2>Destruction of dam a war crime?</h2>

Asked if the destruction of the dam would constitute a war crime, Kirby said international law forbade the destruction of civilian infrastructure.

He said US officials would continue to work with humanitarian partners on the ground to supply aid to those affected.

Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24 last year. After sustained territorial gains in the first few months of the war, the Russian forces had to retreat in the face of the Ukrainian counteroffensive. Large swathes of land were won back by Ukrainian forces. As much as the credit goes to the fortitude of the Ukrainian military, the massive international help has been seen as a major factor that affected the situation on the battlefield.

Western countries, led by the United States, have poured in millions and millions in humanitarian as well as military help. This has boosted the military capacity of Ukraine.

Ukraine dam explosion: US not sure but possibility of Russian role being assessed

Next year will mark America's 60th Presidential competition, US President Joe Biden, a Democrat, is seeking a re-election and launched his campaign last month. Now the question which still remains unanswered is - who will be the Republican candidate to challenge the incumbent President for the White House race?

Reade requested Russian President Vladimir Putin to grant her citizenship, adding that she will remain a "good citizen".&nbsp;

"I'd like to apply for citizenship in Russia, from the president of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin.&nbsp;I do promise to be a good citizen."

<h2>What were Reade's accusations?</h2>

Notably, in the run-up to the 2020 elections, Reade in an interview said the Democrat leader attempted to sexually assault her. Then a junior staffer, Reade was tasked with bringing Biden's gym bag to him in his Senate office when the incident occurred.&nbsp;

“l want to f— you,” the former staffer said Biden told her while pinning her up against the wall. She added that what happened next "happened very quickly".

“I remember being pushed up against the wall. The first thought I had was ‘Where’s the bag?’ which is an absurd thought, but that’s what I thought,” she said.

“He had his hands underneath my clothes, and it happened all at once, so when I tell about it, it’s hard because so many things were happening at once, it’s like my brain was trying to catch up to what was happening."

However, Biden denied all the allegations saying the incident never happened.&nbsp;

"It is not true. I'm saying unequivocally it never, never happened," he said.

Reade said she filed a complaint after the alleged incident, but no record of it has been found.&nbsp;

Ron DeSantis still lacks the frontrunner's national profile. Analysts say the 44-year-old Florida governor's official launch comes with his ratings in decline, despite a slate of right-wing legislative wins in his state. A number of policy missteps have prompted disquiet about his readiness to take on trump, with donors worried he may have peaked too soon. He faces the daunting task of closing an enormous polling gap, with Trump posting leads close to 40 percentage points.

The White House said on Tuesday (May 23) that it is not considering any constitutional solution to the current debt impasse as currently, President Joe Biden is not planning to invoke the 14th Amendment to prevent a US debt default. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that invoking the 14th Amendment to the constitution "is not going to fix the current problem we have right now". However, some legal scholars and experts argue that the 14th Amendment would let the US Treasury ignore the debt limit. The buzz around the 14th Amendment accelerated when Biden previously said that he was considering invoking it, but also noted that he was concerned about the economic consequences of any court challenges. Jean-Pierre's remarks indicate that Biden has abandoned whatever plans he may have had to employ a constitutional instrument to fix the debt situation. The US stands on the verge of default if the government does not agree to raise the borrowing limit from its current 31.4 trillion dollars in order to maintain paying the nation's debts. Republicans say Biden must sign up for spending cuts in exchange for their support to raise the debt ceiling, ignoring repeated Democratic calls for a "clean" increase of the borrowing limit with no strings attached. Both sides have so far failed to reach a common ground as Biden and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy have undertaken three rounds of face-to-face talks in an attempt to strike an agreement to raise the current borrowing ceiling so that the US can meet its existing expenditure commitments. The deal, if at all it gets finalised, must pass both chambers of Congress and therefore hinges on bipartisan support. Republicans control the House 222-213, while Democrats hold the Senate 51-49. Meanwhile, Jean-Pierre also appeared to rule out a temporary debt ceiling extension to give Biden and Mccarthy's teams more time to talk, telling reporters that such a solution is "not on the table". Notably, a failure to lift the debt ceiling would trigger a default that would shake financial markets. McCarthy shows optimism McCarthy on Tuesday expressed optimism for a deal despite another round of talks ended with no signs of progress as he told reporters "we're not there yet", but vowed, "We're going to work until we get it all done". He said, "I mean it's difficult because you've got to be able to write the bill, then you've got 72 hours here, then you've got the Senate to act. I mean, this is why all the way back in February we wanted to have an agreement well in advance." White House: Biden not planning to invoke 14th Amendment to prevent debt default

The United States Secret Service has&nbsp;arrested a 19-year-old they believe might have “intentionally” crashed a U-Haul truck into a security barrier at a park across from the White House&nbsp;on Monday night (May 22). No injuries were reported following the incident.&nbsp;

<h2>What we know about the incident</h2>

According to the Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi, the incident occurred at around 10:00 pm (local time). The suspect was later identified as Sai Varshith Kandula from Chesterfield,&nbsp;a city in St. Louis County in the US state of Missouri, by the US Park Police, on Tuesday morning. He is of Indian origin.

"There were no injuries to any Secret Service or White House personnel and the cause and manner of the crash remain under investigation," said&nbsp;Guglielmi.&nbsp;

The U-Haul truck’s driver crashed into a security barrier near the north side of Lafayette Square, said the Secret Service spokesperson. Images from the scene showed multiple police personnel, both from the Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department. The officials also searched the truck after the crash.&nbsp;

A Reuters witness said investigators found a Nazi flag which supposedly came from inside the truck. Media reports citing footage from WUSA-TV reported that police officers retrieved several items from the truck, including the flag, which were placed in evidence bags.&nbsp;

The footage also showed a box-type, U-Haul truck stopping alongside the steel barricades with multiple officers and a dog approaching the vehicle following the crash, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

A witness to the crash, Chris Zaboji, told Reuters, who also posted a clip of the incident, that the truck drove into the barricades. He also told the news agency that after crashing once, the driver hit the barriers a second time. &nbsp;

“I was walking home from my run on the mall and went through the barricade maybe 20 seconds before they hit the first time. After they rammed it the second time I decided it was time to get the hell out of there,” said Zaboji, on Twitter after posting the clip.&nbsp;

<h2>Charges against the suspect</h2>

As per the preliminary investigation, the driver “may have intentionally struck the security barriers at Lafayette Square,” said Guglielmi.&nbsp;

Earlier, Guglielmi had also said that the US Park Police would file charges with investigative support from the Secret Service. According to Park Police, the suspect has been arrested on multiple charges – threatening to kill, kidnap or inflict harm on a president, vice president or member of their family; assault with a dangerous weapon; reckless driving; destruction of federal property; and trespassing.&nbsp;

It was not immediately clear where US President Joe Biden was at the time of the incident, but he had met with the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy at the White House earlier in the day to discuss the matter of the US debt ceiling.&nbsp;

The suspect was also interviewed by the&nbsp;Secret Service&nbsp;on Monday night, said a&nbsp;representative, adding that the ongoing probe is being coordinated by the FBI, Secret Service, and US Capitol Police.&nbsp;

An official also told&nbsp;NBC News that the suspect made threatening statements about the White House and was quickly detained following the crash. As per media reports, a nearby hotel was also evacuated after the incident.&nbsp;

Indian-origin teen crashes into White House barriers, 'wanted to kill' Biden

US President Joe Biden held talks with House Speaker McCarthy on Monday to talk about a looming debt in the country. The high-stakes White House meeting came after Biden returned from a trip to Asia.

US President Biden meets McCarthy for debt ceiling talks, say 'talks productive, no deal yet'

A White House official on Friday said that "steady progress" has been made in talks over increasing the United States&nbsp;debt ceiling at a time when President Joe Biden is in Japan to attend the G7 summit.

The US government is hoping to hit the legal borrowing limit earliest by June 1, increasing the chances of the largest economy in the world&nbsp;to default on debt repayments for the first time in history.

A default on the $31.8 trillion debt of the United States would unleash turmoil for global markets if no agreement is finalised between Republicans and Democrats, who are asking for deep spending cuts before there is an increase in the debt limit.

Biden "requested and received an update this morning from his designated negotiating team" informing him that "steady progress is being made", the official stated.

"The president directed his team to continue pressing forward for a bipartisan agreement," the official added. "He remains confident that Congress will take necessary action to avoid default,” he further stated.

<h2>Can see 'path'&nbsp;to breakthrough and avert default, says McCarthy</h2>

Top US Republican Kevin McCarthy on Thursday stated that he can see "the path" to reach a breakthrough in talks and finally avert a default, even though his party's hard right has signalled that they will not negotiate their spending-cut demands.

"We're not there - we haven't agreed to anything yet - but I see the path (where) we could come to an agreement," said the House speaker, in his most upbeat assessment yet made of such high-stakes standoff between Biden and Republicans in Congress.

"I think we have the structure now and everybody's working hard,” he added.

"We're on such a short timeline. It makes it almost harder. But there's one thing you know, for me, I never give up. I have the grit, the perseverance and we're gonna get it done,” McCarthy had further stated.

Earlier, Biden had said, “We're going to come together because there's no alternative. To be clear, this negotiation is about the outlines of the budget, not about whether or not we're going to (pay our debts). The leaders (of Congress) have all agreed: We will not default. Every leader has said that.”

Democrats have pointed out the multiple revisions made in the debt limit without budget negotiations, and have accused the Republicans of taking the US economy "hostage".

‘Steady progress’ in talks on raising US debt limit, avoiding default: White House

United States President Joe Biden "looks forward" to holding talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Hiroshima, stated the White House on Saturday, confirming the meeting of the two leaders on the sidelines of the G7 summit.

"It's a safe bet that President Biden will meet him," said National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan&nbsp;without giving more details on when the talks have been scheduled. "The president looks forward to the opportunity to be able to sit down face-to-face,” he added.

The Ukrainian president was expected to reach Japan on Saturday after stopping in Saudi Arabia for the Arab summit, as per the local media. Apart from Biden, Zelensky will also hold talks with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

Zelensky's surprise appearance at the meeting of the richest democracies of the world comes right after the announcement made by the White House that it would allow allied countries to provide Ukraine with US-built F-16 fighter aircraft.

Ukraine had made several pleas for advanced planes to replace its war-battered and ageing Soviet-era fleet of fighter jets, however, Biden had previously stated that the United States would not allow transfers.

Concerns were expressed by Washington regarding provoking Moscow and getting directly involved in the ongoing war.

G7 Summit: Biden ‘looks forward’ to meeting Ukraine’s Zelensky, says White House

Republican South Carolina Senator Tim Scott officially entered the 2024 presidential race on Friday after he filed for his paperwork.

Scott is expected to make an announcement on Monday in his hometown in North Charleston.

"American families are starving for hope. We need to have faith. Faith in God, faith in each other, and faith in America," Scott tweeted on Thursday.

CNN, quoting sources, has reported that Scott might name his longtime aide former chief of staff Jennifer DeCasper as his campaign manager. If this happens, she would be the first Black woman to lead a Republican presidential campaign.

Scott is the lone Black Republican in the Senate. He is vying to become the second Black president after Barack Obama created history in 2008.

Scott joins the growing group of primaries who announced to take on President Joe Biden. It includes former president Donald Trump, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and talk radio host Larry Elder.

For the past few months, the senator has been hinting at participating in the White House race. In February, on a listening tour focused on “Faith in America,” Scott made frequent visits to several early-voting states, including Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

Scott has more than a decade of experience serving on the Charleston County Council and then a term in the South Carolina state House. He won a Charleston-area US House seat in 2010 before moving to the US Senate in 2013 after Haley, then governor of South Carolina, appointed him to succeed GOP Sen. Jim DeMint, who resigned to lead The Heritage Foundation.

According to a recent survey by Washington Post/ABC News, Scott polls in the single digits in a potential Republican primary, with Trump being the front-runner for the nomination.

Last month Scott reported that he had nearly $22 million in his Senate campaign account, which he could use for a presidential bid.

Republican’s lone Black senator Tim Scott enters 2024 US presidential bid

Former White House advisor Amy Pope is set to become the first woman to head the United Nations’ migration agency after she won the vote on Monday (May 15) in Geneva against the Portuguese incumbent Antonio Vitorino. She will become the organisation’s first woman chief on October 1.&nbsp;

In a statement, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said that her five-year term will begin in a couple of months. Following the win, Pope took to Twitter and wrote, “Humbled and honoured to be chosen as the next Director General of (IOM). I am ready to work with ALL our member states and global partners to unleash the opportunities provided by effective, orderly and humane migration.”&nbsp;

She had previously served as Deputy Director General for Management and Reform at IOM under the leadership of Antonio Vitorino who took office in 2018.

Pope was chosen by a secret ballot where IOM’s 175 member states voted her as the new director general. She was competing against Portugal’s former deputy prime minister Vitorino.&nbsp;

Pope also managed to secure the lead after a first round of voting, missing just 12 votes to reach the two-thirds majority needed to declare victory, but before the vote to go to a second round, Vitorino bowed out of the race.

Former White House advisor Amy Pope is set to become the first woman to head the United Nations’ migration agency after she won the vote on Monday (May 15) in Geneva against the Portuguese incumbent Antonio Vitorino. She will become the organisation’s first woman chief on October 1. In a statement, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said that her five-year term will begin in a couple of months. Following the win, Pope took to Twitter and wrote, “Humbled and honoured to be chosen as the next Director General of (IOM). I am ready to work with ALL our member states and global partners to unleash the opportunities provided by effective, orderly and humane migration.” She had previously served as Deputy Director General for Management and Reform at IOM under the leadership of Antonio Vitorino who took office in 2018. Pope was chosen by a secret ballot where IOM’s 175 member states voted her as the new director general. She was competing against Portugal’s former deputy prime minister Vitorino. Pope also managed to secure the lead after a first round of voting, missing just 12 votes to reach the two-thirds majority needed to declare victory, but before the vote to go to a second round, Vitorino bowed out of the race. According to reports, over 100 million people are forcibly displaced around the world and the more than 70-year-old agency seeks to ensure humane and orderly migration and intervenes where needed. US President Biden to host India's PM Modi on June 22: White House

Here, we bring you the news that is trending across WION's social media platforms - Losing your zen at work: The mental health struggle, 'Godfather of AI' says Elon Musk and White House requesting for his help, Adidas faces investor unrest.

The man generally called the “Godfather of artificial intelligence", Dr Geoffrey Hinton, has said that he will respond to the requests received from Twitter CEO Elon Musk, the White House and politician Bernie Sanders, days after he quit Google and warned the world about the risk that AI carries with itself.

Dr Hinton, 75, was given the Turing Award,&nbsp;the highest honour of computer science, in 2018 for his work on “deep learning”, along with the University of Montreal’s Yoshua Bengio and Meta’s Yann Lecun.

The technology behind the AI revolution has emerged from the efforts of Dr Hinton to understand the human brain. However, the computer scientist may not give the advice that the world leaders want to hear.

“The US government inevitably has a lot of concerns around national security. And I tend to disagree with them. For example, I’m sure that the defence department considers that the only safe hands for this stuff is the US defence department – the only group of people to actually use nuclear weapons,” he said while speaking to The Guardian.

“I’m a socialist. I think that private ownership of the media, and of the ‘means of computation’, is not good,” Hinton added.

“If you view what Google is doing in the context of a capitalist system, it’s behaving as responsibly as you could expect it to do. But that doesn’t mean it’s trying to maximise utility for all people: it’s legally obliged to maximise utility for its shareholders, and that’s a very different thing,” he said.

Since Hinton spoke on Monday about the fears of AI which can end the civilisation in 20 years, he has been receiving new requests to talk every two minutes.

However, he has not been able to offer a piece of concrete advice. “I’m not a policy guy. I’m just someone who’s suddenly become aware that there’s a danger of something really bad happening. I wish I had a nice solution, like: ‘Just stop burning carbon, and you’ll be OK.’ But I can’t see a simple solution like that,” he said.

Artificial intelligence's rapid progress in the past year has made Dr Hinton talk about&nbsp;the threat that digital intelligence carries.

“For the last 50 years, I’ve been trying to make computer models that can learn stuff a bit like the way the brain learns it, in order to understand better how the brain is learning things. But very recently, I decided that maybe these big models are actually much better than the brain,” the godfather of AI said.

“We need to think hard about it now, and if there’s anything we can do. The reason I’m not that optimistic is that I don’t know any examples of more intelligent things being controlled by less intelligent things,” he added.

“You need to imagine something that is more intelligent than us by the same degree that we are more intelligent than a frog. It’s all very well to say: ‘Well, don’t connect them to the internet,’ but as long as they’re talking to us, they can make us do things,” he warned.

The White House on Monday announced that the US will end its COVID-19 vaccination requirements for international travellers and federal workers on May 11, nearly three years after first enforcing the policy.

The White House on Monday announced that the US will end its COVID-19 vaccination requirements for international travellers and federal workers on May 11, nearly three years after first enforcing the policy. "Today, we are announcing that the administration will end the COVID-19 vaccine requirements for Federal employees, Federal contractors, and international air travellers at the end of the day on May 11," read the statement. Additionally, the Health and Human Services (HHS) and Homeland Security departments (DHS) will also initiate their own processes to end vaccination requirements. "HHS and DHS announced today that they will start the process to end their vaccination requirements for Head Start educators, CMS-certified healthcare facilities, and certain non-citizens at the land border. In the coming days, further details related to ending these requirements will be provided," it added. According to the White House, the administration was moving into a "different phase" of the Covid response as mandatory vaccination was one of the measures that was no longer required. Notably, the USA is one of the last few countries to remove the mandate for travellers. WATCH | Trending on WION: U.S. energy department's report claims Covid-19 was likely a result of lab leak × Vaccine mandate and the political fight The vaccine mandate also became the centre of a political slugfest between the Republicans and Democrats. The requirement was one of the reasons why Serbian tennis superstar Novak Djokovic was not able to enter the US and was forced to miss several high-profile tournaments, including the Grand Slam. The Biden administration will be ending the requirements on the same day it terminates the pandemic-related public health emergency. Last month, President Joe Biden signed a bipartisan congressional resolution, weeks before the emergency mandate was set to expire. Former president Donald Trump's health and human services secretary Alex Azar first declared a public health emergency on January 31, 2020. The public health experts at the time argued that requirements were necessary so as to confront vaccine hesitancy and increase protection against the deadly virus. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last month also stated it was planning to stop tracking the spread of COVID-19 in communities around the country. The CDC will keep a tab on Covid infections by tracking hospitalisations in some areas. ALSO READ | As US public health emergency deadline approaches, CDC to stop tracking community Covid numbers “We’re not going to lose complete surveillance, but we will lose that hyper-local sensitivity to it perhaps,” said CDC. More than 1.13 million in the US have died from COVID-19 over the last three years. However, with the cases slowing down, the need for vaccine mandate has been nullified.
