Kieron Pollard-led West Indies defeated England by 17 runs in the five-match T20I series decider at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on January 30 (Sunday). After the series was tantalisingly poised at 2-2, Pollard & Co. produced an all-round performance to win 3-2.

When Pollard and Co. opted to bat first, they rode on Kyle Mayers, Brandon Kings, Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell and the skipper's vital knocks to post 179-4 in 20 overs. With 20 needed for Eoin Morgan-led England in the final over, Pollard gave the ball to former captain Jason Holder. Holder didn't disappoint as he became the first West Indies bowler to claim a hat-trick in the shortest format of the game.

While Holder started off with a no-ball, he dominated the remainder of the balls in the contest by not only picking a hat-trick, he ended with four wickets on successive deliveries. The lanky pacer first removed Chris Jordan, on a slower full toss, and then also dismissed pure batter Sam Billings -- both caught by Hayden Walsh.

At the post-match presentation, Holder reflected on his match-winning and record spell. "A lot of hard work, can improve on my death bowling, add some variations. Team India is going through a transition phase at the moment. After Virat Kohli stepped down as the T20I captain, announcing it before the World Cup in the UAE, and was sacked as the ODI skipper, Rohit Sharma has succeeded him in the white-ball formats and remains a top contender to become the all-format leader following Kohli's Test resignation.

Dwayne Bravo retires from international cricket as West Indies end 2021 T20 WC campaign

Star West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo says he will retire from international cricket after the ongoing T20 World Cup here as "time has come" to leave the stage after a career he can be proud of. The 38-year-old Bravo came out of retirement in 2019 and has been a key member of the West Indies team defending its title in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

But the Caribbeans are out contention for a semifinal spot after losing to Sri Lanka -- their third in the showpiece -- in a Super 12 match on Thursday. West Indies' inconsequential match against Australia here on Saturday will be Bravo's last international outing, bringing down the curtains on a career spanning more than 17 years.

"I think the time has come. I've had a very good career. To represent the West Indies for 18 years, had some ups and downs, but as I look back at it I'm very grateful to represent the region and the Caribbean people for so long," said Bravo who has been an integral part of the four-time IPL champion Chennai Super Kings team. "To win three ICC trophies, two with my captain (Daren Sammy) on the left here. One thing I am proud about is that the era of cricketers we had we were able to make a name for ourselves on the global stage and not only do that but have silverware to show for it."

He has more than 500 appearances in the T20 format overall.

After making his international debut in 2004, Bravo also played in 40 Tests, scoring 2200 runs at an average of 31.42 and taking 86 wickets. He also has 2968 runs and 199 wickets to his name from 164 ODIs.
Bravo admitted "it wasn't the World Cup we wanted". "For me now I want to try and pass on whatever experience and information I have with the younger players," he said.
"I think in the white-ball formats West Indies cricket have a bright future and it's important for us to keep supporting the guys and keep encouraging them.

"It wasn't the World Cup we expected, it wasn't the World Cup we wanted as players. We shouldn't feel sorry for ourselves, it was a tough competition, we should keep our heads high."

Kieron Pollard wishes to see star batsman Shimron Hetmyer overwhelm across all formats in global cricket. He feels the southpaw needs to work more diligently to acquire the certainty of the selectors.

Shimron Hetmyer has not reliably included somewhat recently because of injury concerns and he even quit the Bangladesh visit. Since making his debut in 2017, the 24-year-old has played just 16 Tests, 45 ODIs, and 27 T20Is for the West Indies.

In an interaction with Line and Length TV Show, Kieron Pollard expressed that Shimron Hetmyer is the player who will take West Indies cricket forward.

“We love Hetty. He is a young, talented cricketer. He is a guy who we know, deep in our hearts, can take West Indies cricket forward from a generational point of view with his skill and what he can achieve on a cricket field” - he said.

"He knows the truth and he knows what it is. We would love Hetty to be playing all three formats, but as the saying goes, ‘You can only take the horse to the water, but you can’t force him to drink.’ With that being said, I will leave it right there and for the individual to get things together" - he added.

Talking about Shimron Hetmyer's exhibitions across the various formats of the game, Kieron Pollard said:

“He has a fantastic record in ODI cricket. We saw what he can do in the Indian Premier League and it’s just for him to take what’s in front of him. The world is at his feet."
In the last one year, Shimron Hetmyer has overseen just 100 runs from five innings in T20Is and 14 runs in two ODIs.

“We have to plan properly in order to conquer. I'm not looking too much into the names of the opposition because as I said before these guys are talented in their own right as they would have not been selected for their national teams otherwise” - he added.

He was West Indies' ultimate run-machine scoring 11,953 Test runs in 131 matches with 34 centuries and 48 half-centuries. In his ODI career, the middle order batsman scored 10,405 runs at an average of 40.5 with 19 centuries and 63 half-centuries. Lara's outstanding unbeaten 501 for Warwickshire in the English county match against Durham in 1994 catapulted the young batsman to world fame.

Carlos Brathwaite's century in vain as New Zealand beat West Indies by five runs

West Indies produced a dramatic comeback to beat England by 26 runs in Barbados on Friday and level their five-match one-day series at 1-1.

The hosts, who ended a 10-match losing streak in one-day internationals against England, made 289 for six with left-hander Shimron Hetmyer hitting a magnificent unbeaten 104 from 83 balls, including four sixes.

Chris Gayle, who scored a century in the opening match of the series won by England, had laid the foundation with a solid 50 from 63 balls.

But it was Hetmyer, the 22-year-old Guyanese, who got the crowd on their feet with his flamboyant innings including some powerful improvised strokes as well as sensible accumulation.

The century was Hetmyer's fourth in the format at international level and suggests he could be a player to watch in the World Cup later this year.

But having chased down 361 at the Kensington Oval on Wednesday, England would have been confident of extending their lead in the series.

The tourists were given a strong platform as captain Eoin Morgan made 70 and they needed 62 to win from 61 balls with six wickets remaining before West Indies skipper Jason Holder removed Ben Stokes (79), Jos Buttler (34) and Tom Curran -- the latter with a questionable lbw decision after England had used their reviews.

Left-arm seamer Sheldon Cottrell returned to the attack and won the game for the Caribbean side with the wickets of Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid -- celebrating with his trademark military salute.

Cottrell, a Jamaican Defence Force soldier brought into the side as an extra bowler, ended with his career-best ODI figures of 5-46.

Impressive Windies fight back to level series with England

West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has been charged for a language used during the third Test against England on Monday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has said.

Gabriel's comment to Joe Root was not audible to television viewers but according to British broadcaster Sky Sports the England captain was heard replying to the bowler: "Don't use it as an insult. There's nothing wrong with being gay".

Umpires Rod Tucker and Kumar Dharmasena spoke to Gabriel afterwards and he was charged with breaching Article 2.13 of the ICC's Code of Conduct on Tuesday.

"The charge, which was laid by match umpires, will now be dealt with by Match Referee Jeff Crowe," the governing body said in a statement on Tuesday. "Until the proceedings have concluded, the ICC will not comment further."

Article 2.13 addresses personal, insulting, obscene or offensive language directed at other players or match officials.

Root declined to elaborate on the specifics of the verbal altercation and was asked again about the incident on Tuesday, after England had won the final Test in St. Lucia, though West Indies claimed the series 2-1.

"As a player you feel you have responsibilities to uphold on the field and I stand by what I did," said the England captain, according to the Guardian.

"The ICC have got to handle things and I am not in a position to comment but throughout the series it has been played in the right manner between the two sides.

"West Indies have played some fantastic cricket, they are a good bunch of guys and it would be a shame if it tarnishes it."

UK Sports Minister Mims Davies was among those who praised Root for his stance.

"What a Leader, Ambassador and HUGE RESPECT for doing the absolute right thing to properly call this out!" Davies said on her Twitter account.

"He is completely right as there simply is NO place in any sport, at any level for discrimination, intolerance and prejudice."

Former England cricketer Nasser Hussain said Root's reaction would help cement his legacy.

"For me his twelve words as a role model will be in the end more important than a Test hundred or possible victory," Hussain tweeted.

Windies' Shannon Gabriel charged for language used in England Test

England wrapped up a comprehensive 232-run victory over West Indies in the third Test in St Lucia on Tuesday after home batsman Roston Chase made a century but got little help.

Number five Chase scored an unbeaten 102 for his fifth Test ton, after England pace bowler James Anderson ripped through the home side's top order with three quick wickets.

Although West Indies had already won the series with victories in the first two Tests, England's win in the finale will provide a pick-me-up as they eye a home Ashes series against Australia starting in August.

"This week should be a real confidence booster going into a very exciting summer of cricket," England captain Joe Root said at the victory presentation.

Chasing an unlikely target of 485 runs for victory on day four, West Indies made 252 in their second innings.

Chase brought up his century with his team already nine wickets down when he cut part-timer spinner Joe Denly for four.

He was aided by an entertaining 34 by tailender Alzarri Joseph, who slogged three sixes, but pickings were otherwise slim for the hosts, who crumbled again after scoring only 154 in their first knock.

"We still have a lot of improvement to make but lots of positives came out of the series," said West Indies captain Jason Holder, who was suspended for the match due to his team's slow over-rate in the second Test.

NO ANSWER

West Indies' top order had no answer to Anderson's movement off the seam, with John Campbell (golden duck), Kraigg Brathwaite (eight) and Darren Bravo (duck), all caught in the slip-gully cordon.

Mark Wood, who picked up five wickets in the first innings, continued his outstanding match when he had Shai Hope (14) caught at cover off a leading edge just before lunch. Wood was later named Player of the Match.

"He bowled fantastically well, a huge amount of pace," Root said. "It's great to see him come back into the side and put in such a strong performance... and now prove how good a player he is."

Anderson finished with 3-27, while spinner Moeen Ali had 3-99 as England won with more than a day to spare.

Denly also did his part, delivering an excellent throw from the outfield to run out Shimron Hetmyer for 19.

Earlier, Root declared his team's second innings immediately upon his dismissal for 122, with the visitors 361 for five. Ben Stokes was unbeaten on 48.

England batted for only 5.2 overs, adding a quick 36 runs to their overnight total.

IND vs WI, 3rd T20I: With same playing XI, West Indies opt to bat against India

India will be aiming to complete a clean sweep when they take on a battered West Indies in the third T20 International here Sunday even while looking to test the bench strength.

For the cricket loving fans in Chennai, they will certainly miss their 'favourite son' Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is not a part of the T20 squad.

Having sealed the series with a comprehensive win in the second T20I at Lucknow riding on skipper Rohit Sharma's brilliant ton, the home team would look to give reserve bench players like Shreyas Iyer, MS Washington Sundar and the uncapped Shahbaz Nadeem an opportunity before it embarks on the tour of Australia.

The selectors decided to rest pacemen Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav and wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav for Sunday's game, allow them to be in the best physical condition ahead of the tour to Australia.

Medium-pacer Siddarth Kaul has been added to the squad.

The pitch at Chepauk has been on the slower side in recent games but the square prepared for Sunday's game is expected to favour the batsmen.

Skipper Rohit was at his best during the Lucknow T20I following up his exploits in the preceding ODI series but the other batsmen haven't made sizeable contributions despite facing an inconsistent West Indies attack.

The captain's opening partner Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant among others would like to have a few more runs under the belt before the Australia tour.

Local star Dinesh Karthik, whose heroics in the Nidahas Trophy finale in Sri Lanka are still fresh in memory, shone as India chased down a modest target in the first match after a mid-innings wobble and will be eager to shine in front of the home crowd.

With Bumrah and Kuldeep, who have posed a challenge to the visiting batsmen being rested, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and the young Khaleel Ahmed will be expected to form the pace attack and provide early wickets.

The spin department may see the return of Yuzvendra Chahal in the absence of Kuldeep while Krunal Pandya will expect to build on an impressive start to his international career.

It remains to be seen if the team management chooses to give Chennai man Washington Sundar a go alongside Shreyas Iyer.

The visitors, on the other hand have been at sixes and sevens in the T20s after posing an unexpected challenge to the Indians in the ODIs, especially against the skills of Bumrah and Kuldeep.

The absence of regular openers (Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis) and the decision to tinker with the combination at the top hasn't helped their cause either. Skipper Carlos Brathwaite admitted they had to make do with the resources available and the team will aim to end the series with a consolation win.

Established names like Kieron Pollard, Darren Bravo and Denesh Ramdin haven't fired and the impressive Shimron Hetmyer pushed up the order hasn't found the going easy to add to the Windies' woes.

Among the bowlers, Oshane Thomas has impressed the most with his pace and ability to take wickets but has lacked support from the others.

Brathwaite, who rose to fame after smashing Ben Stokes for four sixes in the final over of the 2016 ICC World T20 final in Kolkata, will be eager to showcase his abilities and thereby inspire his men, low on morale, to raise their game against a dominant Indian side in the concluding match of the tour to secure a consolation win.

IND vs WI, 3rd T20I: India aim clean sweep against West Indies

India will look to find the 'perfect' balance in their playing eleven when they take on a resurgent West Indies in the fourth One-day International here on Monday.

Going with five specialist bowlers in Pune on Saturday did not work for India, who ended up as the losing side for the first time in the home series against the West Indies.

With the series surprisingly tied at 1-1 and two matches to go, Virat Kohli's team finds itself in a must-win situation at the Cricket Club of India (CCI).

Credit must be given to the West Indies, who have not only moved on from a dismal Test series but have given the formidable hosts a run for their money in the one-day format.

As Kohli pointed out after the 43-run loss in the third ODI, the return of Kedar Jadhav from injury will give the team a much-needed depth in both the batting and bowling department.

"You will always drift to one side when you don't have the balance. We have to think about the perfect balance we need," said the skipper after the defeat.

An unstable middle-order and lack of runs from MS Dhoni's bat are another issues facing India, not just for Monday's fixture but also in the long run with 15 games remaining before the World Cup in England next year.

Having lost his place in the T20 team, Dhoni is in desperate need of runs in the limited opportunities that are left ahead of the 50-over showpiece event.

Ambati Rayudu (22) did get a start in Pune but if the right-hander wants to hold on to the number four spot, he will have to keep scoring consistently.

Rishabh Pant, who batted at five ahead of Dhoni in the previous game, has been his usual aggressive self but a significant score in his debut ODI series is still awaited.

Amid all the uncertainty, Jadhav's return in the middle-order is more than welcome. His fitness has been a concern in the recent past but he looked good in his first competitive game, played during the Deodhar Trophy, after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Besides his powerful hitting, his off-spin could also come handy.
Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma, who have had twin failures, are due for a big partnership.

The biggest positive for the hosts has been the form of skipper Kohli, who struck his third hundred in a row during the third ODI, becoming the first Indian to do so.

While most will back Kohli to get another hundred at the CCI, the skipper would be expecting a much-improved performance from his team.

On the bowling front, Jasprit Bumrah made a stunning comeback, clinching four wickets last night. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, however, conceded runs in the death overs but trust him to bounce back.

The role of both the spinners -- Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav -- will be crucial in restricting the opposition batsmen.

For the West Indies, their biggest asset has been wicket-keeper Shai Hope, who has played two key innings, a 123 in Visakhapatnam followed by a crucial 95 in Pune.

He would be hoping for another big knock tomorrow and so will Shimron Hetmyer, who failed to convert his start in the third game.

The 21-year-old southpaw, who had scores of 106 and 94 before the Pune game, would be the one watch out for again.

Apart from these two star players, Windies would be hoping that the likes of Kieron Powell, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Rovman Powell fire in the crucial contest.

The experienced Marlon Samuels shone with the ball last night with three wickets but his bat has not done the talking so far. Skipper Jason Holder would also be itching to make a match-winning contribution.

The bowlers would have taken confidence from bundling out India in Pune. Pacer Obed McCoy and off-spinner Ashley Nurse will be high on confidence as the West Indies aim to take the series lead.

With the encounter on Monday, international cricket returns to the CCI, which last hosted a Test in 2009 and an ODI back in 2006.

IND vs WI, 4th ODI: India seek 'perfect' balance against determined West Indies

India thrashed the West Indies by huge 224 runs in the fourth ODI to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series here on Monday.

Chasing 378 for victory, the tourists were bowled out for 153 runs. The visitors never really had a shot at chasing down this total after they kept losing wickets right from the start.

Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayudu's brilliant centuries, supported by a disciplined bowling spell by young paceman Khaleel Ahmed and left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, both taking three wickets each, helped to conclude Windies' batting in just 36.2 overs.

Skipper Jason Holder top-scored for the visitors with his unbeaten 54-run knock.

Earlier, centuries from opener Rohit and Rayudu had powered India to a mammoth 377 runs.

While Rohit compensated for his failure in the third ODI by belting another top-notch hundred, the 21st of his career and the second of the series, Rayudu, the newly-anointed No.4 stamped his authority by slamming his 3rd ODI century.

India had won the Guwahati ODI, tied the Vizag match and lost the Pune contest. The final match will be played Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.
