For years, scientists have been looking for evidence to prove water existed on Mars once. The efforts seem to have paid off as the China's rover on the red planet has found that water may have been there much more recently than thought by scientists, said a new study. &nbsp;

Around 700 million years ago, water was present on the now cold and dry planet, the study said, citing evidence. This means it was there till the current Amazonian period. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Water crisis has hit US' California. California has now imposed curbs on water usage. New emergency restrictions will start from June 1st.

Water crisis hits California: California imposes curbs on water usage

Officials in southern California in the US on Tuesday, declared water shortage emergency. New, unprecedented measure have been put in place. These involve restriction on outdoor watering (for e.g., to domestic plants, grass etc).

The measure is likely to affect millions of people living in Ventura, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. The restrictions put on the use of water will see outdoor watering limited to just one day in a week.

These measures will come into effect in June.

“Due to the depth and duration of the current drought, Metropolitan cannot meet normal demands in the SWP dependent area with existing resources,” officials said in a document outlining the action. The official information in the document was quoted by The Guardian.

California is in third year of a devastating drought. Officials expect the situation to worsen in coming Summer months which are sure to put strain on the availability of water.

Beginning of this year has been driest ever in terms of precipitation.&nbsp;

Rainfall shortage and human activities are responsible for the drought that has marred Chile for a decade now. The country was forced to announce a new water rationing plan.

High temperatures and lack of rainfall have dried up the artificial lake in Ceresole Reale, Italy, for the first time. The bottom of the lake, which has a capacity of 35 million cubic metres of water, is now completely dry.

The human body can survive without food for upto&nbsp;3 weeks. But deprive it of water, and it's game over in 3 days. Water not only regulates body temperature but it literally keep our bodily cells alive. Water covers 71 per cent of Earth's surface but only 3 per cent of it is potable. Saving water is thus saving humanity. And United Nations' World Water Day wants to bring this into focus.

Each year, World Water Day is celebrated on March 22. The UN observes such special days and weeks to educate public about issues facing humanity. The effort is also focused on mobilising political will and resources.

What is the theme for this year's World Water Day?

This year the focus is on groundwater. Groundwater is something that is a source for lakes and even rivers. It is found underground in aquifers. Aquifers are geological formations of rocks. Groundwater deposits are recharged when water from rain or snowfall trickles underground.

<img alt="Groundwater" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="9fd483fe-f6d3-4e7a-b90b-2afe6acede36" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/WWD2022_CARD3_A%20changing%20world_still%20image.jpg" />

(Source: United Nations)

As we know, groundwater can easily be accessed by digging wells. But over-extraction of groundwater from a particular source may spell doom for the deposit and population residing in that area. Careful use of groundwater is hence of great importance.

Since when has World Water Day been celebrated?

The very first World Water Day was observed in the year 1993. The idea for observance of such a day was put forth during United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992.

United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in the same year to observe March 22 as World Water Day each year.&nbsp;

Focus on water is necessary since as per latest UN data, 2.2 billion people around the world do not have access to safe drinking water.

"A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030," says the UN.

How can you tell your story to the UN?

The UN has asked everyone to take 'one minute challenge' It has invited one minute videos from everyone.&nbsp;

"Share your groundwater story" says the UN.&nbsp;

"How does groundwater affect your life? Is there enough? Is it safe? What needs to be done to protect groundwater?"

Hashtags #MyGroundwaterStory &amp; #WorldWaterDay can be used and the videos can be uploaded on Youtube or Vimeo.

World Water Day 2022: Know the significance, tell your story to the UN

Greenland's immense ice sheet has lost enough ice in the past 20 years to submerge the entire United States in half a metre of water, according to data released this week by Danish researchers.

The climate is warming faster in the Arctic than anywhere else on the planet and melting ice from Greenland is now the main factor in the rise in the Earth's oceans, according to NASA.

Since measurements began in 2002, the Greenland ice sheet has lost about 4,700 billion tonnes of ice, said Polar Portal, a joint project involving several Danish Arctic research institutes.

This represents 4,700 cubic kilometres of melted water -- "enough to cover the entire US by half a meter" -- and has contributed 1.2 centimetres to sea level rise, the Arctic monitoring website added.

Polar Portal's findings are based on satellite imagery from the US-German GRACE programme (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment), which showed the ice melt to be most severe near the coasts of the Arctic territory, at the edge of the ice sheet.

In these peripheral zones, "independent observations also indicate that the ice is thinning, that the glacier fronts are retreating in fjords and on land, and that there is a greater degree of melting from the surface of the ice", the website said.

The west coast of Greenland is particularly affected, according to the data.

Climate change is particularly alarming in the Arctic, which scientists say is warming at a rate three to four times the global average.

According to a study published by NASA in late January, the accelerated melting near Greenland's coasts can be explained by the warming of the Arctic Ocean.

The phenomenon "is melting Greenland's glaciers at least as much as warm air is melting them from above".

Melting ice from Greenland is currently the main factor in the rise in the Earth's oceans and the territory's glaciers are now retreating six to seven times faster than they were 25 years ago, the US agency added.

According to climate scientists, the Greenland ice sheet contains enough water to raise the oceans by more than seven metres, and the ice sheet in Antarctica contains enough for a rise of almost 50 metres.

Arctic sea ice cover, although its melting has no effect on sea levels, has also shrunk considerably, losing almost 13 percent of its average surface area every 10 years.

A painful death is perhaps certain.&nbsp;

But you move quickly and manage to escape the sinking vehicle (A VERY hard thing to do). You climb onto whichever part of the car that's still above surface. So far so good.

Water is one of the most important natural resource for the existence of life. Almost 70% of the Earth is covered with water, but only 2.5% of it is fresh water. Less than 1% is available for human consumption. The unsustainable growth of human population has increased the demand for fresh water and the planet is running out. Although it may have looked like that the water is on fire, it’s the chilly weather that has been causing the phenomenon. During the winter, the waters of Puget Sound usually remain mild. The sea surface temperatures stay in the low-mid 50s. Also Read: ‘Wooden’ satellite in space by 2023? But as temperature drops around the region, the warmer air quickly gets cooled up and condensed into wisps of fog. Most of the time, water is found in Mars's cold polar regions and is not very useful. However, this time, scientists have discovered an ample source of water on the red planet.

Scientists have finally managed to discover water on the Martian surface

We live on a planet 71 per cent of which is covered in water. It is the water that gives Earth its unique blue colour from space; but the origin of this liquid water, which sustains our seas and has nourished life for millennia, still remains a subject of intense debate.

Some researchers argue that water in one form or the other has been present in our world ever since it coalesced out of swirling clouds of dust and gas 4.5 billion years ago. Earth has always been provided with a reservoir, in short.

Yet, other scientists have a different and, frankly, much more interesting viewpoint.

According to them, Earth was once parched and almost waterless, and our oceans were merely the result of ice and water raining down from extraterrestrial sources.

Yes, aliens gave us water! The theory suggests that extraterrestrials may be responsible for most of the 332,500,000 cubic miles of water covering our planet today.

And...drumroll, please...now, British scientists are backing up the hypothesis that our seas are actually from "out of this world."

Studying grains of material from an asteroid called 25143 Itokawa brought back to Earth by a Japanese robot probe, this group of scientists concluded that these grains support the hypothesis that our oceans came from outer space.

Luke Daly, of the University of Glasgow, says that the dust they studied provides compelling evidence that our oceans were formed from water from other parts of the solar system. He says that there is strong evidence that at least half of the water on Earth has been filtered by interplanetary dust.

The scientists report in a paper published in Nature Astronomy that the grains brought back from the asteroid contained a significant amount of water. Daly and his colleagues examined grains of dust returned from Itokawa 25143 using atom-probe tomography. By using this technique, scientists can count atoms one by one in a sample.&nbsp;

As Daly explains, this water was most likely created by the solar wind, a stream of particles emanating from the Sun. In the clouds of dust that float throughout the solar system, these particles would have interacted with oxygen atoms to create water molecules which would have built up in the clouds over the solar system's history.

The dust grains, as well as their water, would have been mopped up by the Earth as it orbited the Sun. According to an argument, this would have allowed water, which Leonardo da Vinci once called "the driving force of all nature," to filter down from the skies onto the earth.

Professor Martin Lee of the University of Glasgow, who was part of the group, stressed that all the water that is found in our seas did not come from solar dust grains.&nbsp;

Ice from comets and asteroids crashing on Earth would have made an equally substantial contribution. According to Lee, solar dust and icy comets provided us with the oceans in which life then evolved.

This discovery is important not only for providing compelling evidence about the origins of water on Earth, but for several other reasons as well. It implies that there may be water on other worlds in our solar system, perhaps in the form of ice. This has profound implications for future exploration of space and the hunt for life across the universe.

Wait, what!? Scientists say water in our oceans has alien origins

Hawaii health officials have instructed residents living at an Oahu military base to avoid drinking their tap water after high concentrations of diesel fuel were discovered in at least one well, contaminating a system used by tens of thousands of people and several day care centers and schools.

State health officials announced Friday that testing of a well overseen by the Navy had detected gasoline- and diesel-range hydrocarbons at levels up to 350 times what the state considers safe for drinking water.

The well, known as the Red Hill shaft, is one of three wells that are run by the Navy. Last month, the Navy began receiving complaints from residents of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam who said their water tasted and smelled like gas.

Since then, the Navy has shut down two of its wells, relocated more than 3,000 families to hotels across the island and distributed bottled water to families and officials.

“The Navy is responsible for this crisis,” Adm. Samuel Paparo, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, said Friday at a public hearing with Navy officials and state legislators. “We are taking ownership of the solutions, and we are going to fix it. We are in the process of fixing this.”

The wells are part of three groundwater sources that provide drinking water to the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam water system, which serves residents of military housing, the Aliamanu Military Reservation, and several elementary schools and day care centers.

On Thursday, the Navy said it had found “elevated” amounts of “total petroleum hydrocarbon” in samples taken near another groundwater source, the Aiea Halawa well, which was shut down December&nbsp;3. That discovery was announced about a week after the Navy said samples taken from the Red Hill shaft showed the water had been contaminated.

The state said about 93,000 people have been affected.

Residents have complained of sickened pets and reported symptoms including sore throats, stomach pain, headaches, diarrhea and vomiting. Health officials said people who were exposed to the contaminated water could also experience difficulty breathing, coughing and red or peeling skin.

“The level of this contaminant poses a public health threat, and is considered unsafe to drink,” Kathleen Ho, deputy director for environmental health at the Hawaii State Department of Health, said in a statement. “We will continue to take all possible action to protect public health and the environment.”

People were also instructed to avoid cooking with the water, bathing in it or washing dishes and clothes.

“This includes consumption by pets,” the department said.

Health officials said that for the moment, they do not expect long-term health effects to result from the exposure.

Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro said he had suspended operations at the underground storage tanks at the Red Hill military fuel storage site in Oahu.

Navy officials said they believed that the water in the Red Hill well was contaminated after jet fuel spilled into an access tunnel at the site on November&nbsp;20. The spill was cleaned up in 24 to 30 hours, according to the Navy, but not before it leached into the water system.

“I deeply apologize to each and every one of you and to the people of Hawaii that this incident may have been destructive to your lives in any way,” Del Toro told residents of the base Sunday during a four-hour community meeting.

Health officials in Hawaii have ordered the Navy to clean up its water system and suspend operations at Red Hill.

Gov. David Ige and members of Hawaii’s congressional delegation have described the contamination issue as a “crisis.”

Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, said the Environmental Protection Agency should take full control of testing and analyzing the water in the system.

“We need a trusted independent agency with deep expertise and a mission of environmental protection to take over,” he said in a statement.

Del Toro said last weekend that he was determined to get to the “root cause of this problem” and fix it so that “you can feel confident that the water you are drinking is safe.”

Navy officials said at the hearing Friday that they planned to clean up the Red Hill well by flushing it with 25 million gallons of clean water.

The Navy said it would then flush out the water systems in every house and building that had experienced contamination.

The plan is to get people back in their homes by Christmas, said Rear Adm. Dean VanderLey, a goal he acknowledged was “very aggressive.”

“That remains my personal goal for the sake of our families,” he said.

In a bizarre claim, a man has said that he was seduced by a dolphin when he was working at a water park in Florida and that used to have regular sexual intercourse with the mammal.

63-year-old Malcolm Brenner claimed he had a relationship with the playful cetacean while&nbsp;working at a theme park in Sarasota in the 1970s. The ‘affair’ is said to have lasted around 6 months.

Brenner, a college student at the time, was given unrestricted access to Dolly's pool when he was tasked with photographing her.

He told The Mirror that it was the dolphin who “came on” to him while they were swimming.

He added that he initially discouraged the “attempts” made by the dolphin, who was named Dolly, but eventually grew fond of her.

He said they managed to "evade" a male dolphin living in her enclosure to snatch some alone time when the park closed.

“There's something quite transcendental about making love with a dolphin," adding: "I called it a relationship because that's what it was.,” Brenner said.

He then claimed that the dolphin “committed suicide” nine months after it was relocated to another amusement park.

Brenner said he fell into a five-year depression following Dolly's death.

Notably, this is not the first sexual encounter Brenner had with an animal. He admitted that he tried to have intercourse with his family dog as a teenager.

In 2010, Brenner's book Wet Goddess, which is thought to be a largely autobiographical account of his tryst with Dolly, was released.

A hospital in Japan "accidentally" used simply treated water meant for toilets as drinking water for over 30 years, according to a peculiar incident revealed in media last month.&nbsp;

According to the Japanese news outlet Yomiuri Shimbun, Osaka University revealed on October 20 that some of the tap water pipes in specified locations of the school's department were installed incorrectly, resulting in the drinking water pipes being linked to the lavatory.

To make matters worse, the problem has been going on for over 30 years, since the hospital opened in 1993, and 120 taps were found to be defective.&nbsp;

Surprisingly, the well water was flowing to 120 faucets, which were being used for drinking, washing hands, and even gargling.

The issue occurred as a result of a mistake in connecting pipes when the hospital was built in 1993.&nbsp;

Despite the fact that the problem had been there for a long time, no one was aware of it until the hospital was preparing to construct a new diagnosis and treatment facility, during which the problem was discovered during an inspection.

According to reports, the hospital does verify the colour, taste, and smell of water once a week, based on existing records, implying that there has been no problem since 2014.

The university, on the other hand, claims that no health risks were discovered throughout the examination.&nbsp;

Our constant search for answer to whether we are alone in the universe involves detection of water. The simple liquid has a great significance in finding life in space as it has cradled life on our very own planet. Water has been found and even predicted to be present elsewhere in out solar system but now scientists have found a galaxy that represents farthest distance from Earth where water has been found.

Scientists from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have found evidence of water in a galaxy named SPT0311-58. The galaxy is 12.8 billion light-years away from Earth.

The scientists used Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Chile to gaze at the galaxy. The galaxy is located in younger part of the universe and it is about 780 million years old. Considering universe is 13.8 billion years old, the galaxy is fairly young.

Lead investigator of the study has been quoted in media reports as saying that evidence of presence of carbon dioxide has also been found in this galaxy. The scientists have also found that stars in this galaxy have completed their life span relatively quickly. Considering oxygen comes from dying stars, this galaxy would have oxygen too. This also logically explains presence of water.

A report by a leading environmental group in the US has claimed that many people are at risk of developing liver diseases due to the contaminated tap water that they have been consuming. As a part of the report, the researchers discovered 56 new contaminants, including pesticides and radioactive materials. These contaminants are consumed by Americans on a daily basis.

The researchers analysed data from nearly 50,000 water systems from across the US to come to a conclusion.

The problem is mainly caused by the decaying infrastructure and the pollution from toxic "forever chemicals." This can be found in water, air, food or even in shampoo or makeup, claims the report.&nbsp;

There are several thousand types of forever chemicals, or what is called Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS).

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/i-aint-paying-tom-hanks-turned-down-jeff-bezos-offer-to-take-blue-origin-space-flight-426654">Also read |&nbsp;'I ain't paying': Tom Hanks turned down Jeff Bezos' offer to take Blue Origin space flight</a>

Once these chemicals are ingested, they can accumulate in the body. The problem is mainly caused by the decaying infrastructure and the pollution from toxic "forever chemicals." This can be found in water, air, food or even in shampoo or makeup, claims the report. There are several thousand types of forever chemicals, or what is called Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS). In the following two years of poor rainfall, Covid-19 pandemic and desert locust outbreak, nearly about two million Kenyans in the northern part of the nation are facing starvation. They themselves are in a particularly dire situation and are crumbling to find an alternative way to combat climate change.

A local municipality in South Africa’s Port Elizabeth city, which experiences one of the worst droughts in its recorded history, has embarked on a plan to remove massive alien vegetation, which is believed to be responsible for the frequent water crisis in the city.

The project, which will cost the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality more than 20 million Rand (approximately 13.6 million US dollars), has been introduced as part of the municipality’s water-saving measures.

The officials have identified alien vegetation trees as a major cause of loss of water that is supposed to be flowing into the catchment dams.

According to local officials, a fully grown alien vegetation tree consumes about 100 litres of water per day.

8,000 people in the Canadian city of Iqaluit have been without 'drinking water' for 3 days. The city's water supplies have been contaminated, the water is not safe even if boiled or filtered. Palki Sharma gets you a report.

Gravitas: 8,000 people in Canadian city don't have drinking water

Imagine you are out on a trek and suddenly run out of drinking water. You search for water and find a stream, but aren't sure about purity of water. What do you do?

Boiling the water may be one of the options but it'll take lot of time for it to cool and (at last) become cool for drinking.

Scientists at University of Texas, Austin have developed hydrogels that can purify contaminated water. The hydrogel tablets can kill bacterias present in water by forming Hydrogen Peroxide coupled with activated carbon. Such a combination is lethal for bacteria as it disturbs their metabolism.&nbsp;

“The hydrogel is a multifunctional hydrophilic polymer that can bring a revolution and curb water scarcity. In addition, it is highly efficient and can be produced on a mass level,” Guihua Yu, Associate Professor, Cockrell School of Engineering, Texas, said in a press release.

The hydrogel tablet can purify one-litre of water in an hour. The method provides additional benefit as the purification does not need energy and does not form any harmful by-products. The methods we commonly use need thermal energy (boiling) or solar energy. The use of solar energy causes accumulation of microbes. This eventually slows down and shuts the system.

More than five billion people globally are expected to face a shortage of water by 2050, a United Nations (UN) agency report has warned.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), on Tuesday, said that climate change increases the global risk of water-related hazards like floods and droughts, and the number of people affected by water scarcity is also expected to soar.

"According to figures cited in the report, 3.6 billion people had inadequate access to water at least one month per year in 2018. By 2050, this is expected to rise to more than five billion," the report titled "The State of Climate Services 2021: Water" said.

It further highlighted the need for urgent action to improve cooperative water management, embrace integrated water and climate policies and scale up investment in this precious commodity which underpins all the international goals on sustainable development, climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.

"Increasing temperatures are resulting in global and regional precipitation changes, leading to shifts in rainfall patterns and agricultural seasons, with a major impact on food security and human health and well-being," said World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas.

In the past 20 years, terrestrial water storage - the summation of all water on the land surface and in the subsurface, including soil moisture, snow and ice - has dropped at a rate of 1cm per year.

According to the report, the biggest losses are occurring in Antarctica and Greenland, but many highly populated lower latitude locations are experiencing significant water losses in areas that are traditionally providing water supply, with major ramifications for water security.

The situation is worsening by the fact that only 0.5 per cent of water on Earth is useable and available freshwater. Water-related hazards have increased in frequency over the past 20 years.

Since 2000, flood-related disasters have risen by 134 per cent compared with the two previous decades.

Most of the flood-related deaths and economic losses were recorded in Asia, where end-to-end warning systems for riverine floods require strengthening.

The number and duration of droughts also increased by 29 per cent over this same period. Most drought-related deaths occurred in Africa, indicating a need for stronger end-to-end warning systems for drought in that region, the report added.

As drought continues to grip California some home owners are investing in technology that can extract water from the air. But Johnson is the proud owner of an air-to-water system, which works like an air conditioner by using coils to chill air, then collect water drops in a basin to purify it.

Operators&nbsp;of Japan's stricken&nbsp;Fukushima&nbsp;nuclear plant unveiled plans Wednesday to construct an&nbsp;undersea&nbsp;tunnel&nbsp;to&nbsp;release&nbsp;more than a million tonnes of&nbsp;treated&nbsp;water&nbsp;from the site into the ocean.

Plans for the one-kilometre tunnel&nbsp;were announced after the Japanese government decided in April to&nbsp;release&nbsp;the accumulated&nbsp;water&nbsp;in two years' time.

Ministers say the&nbsp;release&nbsp;is safe because the&nbsp;water&nbsp;will have been processed to remove almost all radioactive elements, and will be diluted.

But the April decision triggered a furious reaction from neighbouring countries, and fierce opposition from local fishing communities.

Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO)&nbsp;said it will start building the&nbsp;tunnel&nbsp;by March 2022 after carrying out feasibility studies and obtaining approval from authorities.

It will have a diameter of about 2.5 metres&nbsp;and will stretch east into the Pacific from tanks at the plant containing around 1.27 million tonnes of&nbsp;treated&nbsp;water.

That includes&nbsp;water&nbsp;used to cool the plant, which was crippled after going into meltdown following a huge 2011 tsunami, as well as rain and groundwater that seeps in daily.

An extensive pumping and filtration system extracts tonnes of newly contaminated&nbsp;water&nbsp;each day and filters out most radioactive elements.

But fishing communities fear releasing the&nbsp;water&nbsp;will undermine years of work to restore confidence in their seafood.

The plant's chief decommissioning officer Akira Ono said Wednesday that releasing the&nbsp;water&nbsp;through a&nbsp;tunnel&nbsp;would help prevent it flowing back to the shore.

"We will thoroughly explain our safety policies and the measures we are taking against reputation damage, so that we can dispel concerns held by people involved in fisheries" and other industries, Ono told reporters.

In a statement, TEPCO said it was ready to pay compensation for reputation damage related to the&nbsp;release.

TEPCO also said it would accept inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency on the safety of the&nbsp;release. The IAEA has already endorsed Japan's decision.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has called disposing of the&nbsp;water&nbsp;an "inevitable task" in the decades-long process of decommissioning the nuclear plant.

Debate over how to handle the&nbsp;water&nbsp;has dragged on for years, as space to store it at the site runs out.

The filtration process removes most radioactive elements from the&nbsp;water, but some remain, including tritium.

Experts say the element is only harmful to humans in large doses and with dilution the&nbsp;treated&nbsp;water&nbsp;poses no scientifically detectable risk.

More than four million people, including one million refugees, are at an immediate risk of losing access to safe water in Lebanon. With the rapidly escalating economic crisis, shortages of funding, fuel and supplies such as chlorine and spare parts,

UNICEF has estimated that most water pumping will gradually cease across the country in the next four to six weeks.

Yukie Mokuo, UNICEF Representative in Lebanon, in a statement said, "The water sector is being squeezed to destruction by the current economic crisis in Lebanon, unable to function due to the dollarised maintenance costs, water loss caused by non-revenue water, the parallel collapse of the power grid and the threat of rising fuel costs".

"A loss of access to the public water supply could force households to make extremely difficult decisions regarding their basic water, sanitation and hygiene needs".

As per UNICEF, if the public water supply collapses, water costs could skyrocket by 200 per cent a month.

For Lebanon’s extremely vulnerable households, this cost will be too much to bear as it represents 263 per cent of the monthly average income.

According to a UNICEF-supported assessment based on data collected by the country’s four main public water utility companies, more than 71 per cent of people fall within ‘highly critical’ and ‘critical’ levels of vulnerability. Also, nearly 1.7 million people have access to only 35 litres a day. This is a decrease of almost 80 per cent against the national average of 165 litres pre-2020.&nbsp;

Yukie Mokuo said, "At the height of the summer months, with COVID-19 cases beginning to rise again due to the Delta variant, Lebanon’s precious public water system is on life support and could collapse at any moment". She further added, "Unless urgent action is taken, hospitals, schools and essential public facilities will be unable to function and over four million people will be forced to resort to unsafe and costly sources of water, putting children’s health and hygiene at risk. The immediate adverse effect would be on public health. Hygiene would be compromised, and Lebanon would see an increase in diseases. Women and adolescent girls would face particular challenges to their personal hygiene, protection and dignity without access to safe sanitation”.

Aquarium owners have been urged to not abandon their pet goldfish into the open waters in Minnesota.

“A few goldfish might seem to some like a harmless addition to the local water body – but they’re not,” the Minnesota department of natural resources&nbsp;advised.

The warning has come after officials observed small-sized goldfishes growing into a monstrously bigger size, which is very unusual and raises concern for the species.

Miniature to monstrous: Goldfish abandoned in lakes grow bigger in size

Israel and Jordan struck a deal on Thursday according to which the Jewish state will sell an unprecedented amount of water to Jordan. This will also significantly boost Jordanian exports to Palestinians in West Bank.

Water resource cooperation has been a core issue between Israel and Jordan since a 1994 peace deal, but relations between the neighbours have frayed in recent years.

The meeting between the two countries was held just inside the Jordanian border. Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid and his Jordanian counterpart approved Israel's sale of &nbsp;50 million cubic metres of water to its neighbour.&nbsp;

Statements from both governments confirmed the sale, and said the final details of the transaction would be concluded in the coming days.

Lapid described Jordan as an "important partner" for Israel, and said he was committed to strengthening ties.

Gidon Bromberg, Israeli Director for EcoPeace Middle East -- a leading organisation on regional water cooperation which operates in Israel, the West Bank and Jordan -- described the water sale as "the largest quantity ever sold between the two countries."

It "is a true 'water shed' event," he said.

"It represents an understanding of mutual interests and how countries in the region need to cooperate, if we are to survive the tremendous challenges to water and national security that the climate crisis presents."

Jordan is one of the world's most water-deficient countries and experts say the country, home to 10 million people, has been grappling with one of its most severe droughts in its history.

Israel, which also faces water pressures, is a world leader in desalination.
