<p>Doctors performed a 2-hour-long percutaneous nephrolithotomy surgery, successfully extracting around 300 stones from Xiao Yu's kidney. Following the procedure, her condition stabilised, and she was discharged a few days later.</p>

<p>The study based on the analysis done by Alex de Vries of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam says that Bitcoin’s water footprint has rapidly increased in recent years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In his study, de Vries noted how most of the research about the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining has been focused on its energy consumption, carbon footprint, and the electronic waste it generates but given the shortage of water and the estimated use of it in the Bitcoin network it is crucial to understand the water footprint of the cryptocurrency usage.</p>

<p>As the amount of water that Bitcoin uses, not only can it potentially impact different countries’ climate goals, but also potentially poses an additional stress to water resources in drought-prone areas.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, the numbers are based on the assumption that Bitcoin mines run on water-dependent cooling systems but some data centres and crypto mines also use a different system which not only keeps the computers cool but also cuts down water consumption by immersing them in a non-conductive liquid, reported The Verge.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has observed an elaborate cosmic supply chain consisting of ice-covered pebbles which are apparently drifting inward from the outer Solar System, the latest study revealed. It is delivering water to still-forming planets closer to their stars, which was a long-proposed theory of planet formation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scientists are still baffled as to the origin of Earth's water. There are several ideas, including the theory that our water came from comets and asteroids that collided with Earth. There are several hypotheses with detailed scientific analysis on how Earth got its water.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the Webb telescope has made a significant contribution to planetary science with its findings linked to planet creation theory.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The evidence so far was masked by thick veils of dust in immature solar systems. However, the latest observations by the Webb telescope are significant.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ice-covered pebbles from outer solar systems convey water to planets that are still developing closer to their stars. The findings were published on Nov 8 in a new paper in the journal The Astrophysical Journal Letters. The paper is titled "JWST Reveals Excess Cool Water near the Snow Line in Compact Disks, Consistent with Pebble Drift". &nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by Universe Today, Andrea Banzatti, who is an assistant professor of physics at Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas, is the lead author, said: "Webb finally revealed the connection between water vapour in the inner disk and the drift of icy pebbles from the outer disk. This finding opens up exciting prospects for studying rocky planet formation with Webb!"&nbsp;</p>

<p>To carry out the study, Banzatti and his colleagues used Webb's MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument) to study four young, Sun-like stars only two or three million years old and surrounded by protoplanetary disks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Two of them were compact discs ranging in size from 10 to 20 AU, and the other two were extended discs ranging in size from 100 to 150 AU. The expanded discs also contain significant radial gaps.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the pebble drift theory, compact discs convey frozen pebbles more efficiently into the inner solar system, well within Neptune's orbit in our Solar System. Extended discs, on the other hand, are less efficient at it, according to the notion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The powerful Medium-Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) on the James Webb collaborates with MIRI. The MRS can distinguish between cool and warm water, which is essential for unravelling the convoluted picture in protoplanetary discs. The MRS statistics suggested that compact discs contain more cool water than extended discs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The authors of the study said that they interpret the cool water emission as ice sublimation and vapour diffusion near the snow line, suggesting that there is indeed a higher inward mass flux of icy pebbles in compact disks.&nbsp;</p>

As quoted by Universe Today, Andrea Banzatti, who is an assistant professor of physics at Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas, is the lead author, said: "Webb finally revealed the connection between water vapour in the inner disk and the drift of icy pebbles from the outer disk. This finding opens up exciting prospects for studying rocky planet formation with Webb!" To carry out the study, Banzatti and his colleagues used Webb's MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument) to study four young, Sun-like stars only two or three million years old and surrounded by protoplanetary disks. The expanded discs also contain significant radial gaps. According to the pebble drift theory, compact discs convey frozen pebbles more efficiently into the inner solar system, well within Neptune's orbit in our Solar System. Extended discs, on the other hand, are less efficient at it, according to the notion. The powerful Medium-Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) on the James Webb collaborates with MIRI. The MRS can distinguish between cool and warm water, which is essential for unravelling the convoluted picture in protoplanetary discs. The MRS statistics suggested that compact discs contain more cool water than extended discs. The authors of the study said that they interpret the cool water emission as ice sublimation and vapour diffusion near the snow line, suggesting that there is indeed a higher inward mass flux of icy pebbles in compact disks. <p>The Curiosity rover took a month to climb the Gediz Vallis Ridge. It completed its most challenging climb yet after navigating through a sharp 23-degree incline, slippery sand and rocks around the size of its wheels.</p>

<p>After reaching the ridge in August, the rover spent 11 days capturing the rocks in the area, some of which were as large as cars.</p>

<p>Curiosity also captured a separate image in which the upper region of Mount Sharp is visible at a distance behind a prominent butte (flat-topped mountain) in the forepart.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ridge lies in Curiosity rover's way through the foothills of Mount Sharp, a sharp 3-mile-tall mountain once covered in lakes and streams.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Researchers who studied the composition of many dark rocks and boulders on the ridge found that these rocks originated somewhere on the mountain and skated down with the debris flow. These rocks might enable scientists to study higher mountain regions that Curiosity cannot reach.&nbsp;</p>

The study published in the journal <em>Nature</em> on September 14 says that waves of electrons, arriving indirectly from Earth and the Sun are contributing to the formation of frozen water on the lunar surface. These electrons hit the Moon as it passes in and out of Earth's magnetotail, which the planet leaves behind as it rushes through space.</p>

<p>"We find that the water abundance at lunar mid-latitudes substantially increases in the dusk and dawn magnetosheath when the solar wind flux increases, yet remains nearly constant across the central magnetotail," the study said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added that within the magnetotail is a plasma sheet made up of highly charged electrons and ions, pulled from Earth's atmosphere and solar wind radiation from the Sun.</p>

<p>"We suggest that although we have confirmed the importance of the solar wind as a major source of fast water production on the Moon, hitherto unobserved properties of the plasma sheet properties may also play an important role," the study added.</p>

<p>According to a report by <em>Science Alert</em>, planetary scientist Shuai Li from the University of Hawai'i said that when the Moon is outside of the magnetotail, the lunar surface is bombarded with solar wind.</p>

<p>"Inside the magnetotail, there are almost no solar wind protons and water formation was expected to drop to nearly zero," Professor Li added.</p>

<p>However, citing analysis, the report said that this was not the case. Earlier studies pointed towards hydrogen ions from solar winds generating water on the Moon, but it seems this water is still forming when the lunar surface is protected from solar winds, inside the magnetotail.</p>

<p>"When the Moon is outside of the magnetotail, the lunar surface is bombarded with solar wind. Inside the magnetotail, there are almost no solar wind protons and water formation was expected to drop to nearly zero," said Shuai Li, an assistant researcher at the university's Manoa School of Ocean. Shuai Li was quoted by PTI.</p>

<p>Li and co-authors of the study analysed remote sensing data collected by Chandrayaan-1 between 2008 and 2009. They assessed changes in water formation when Moon passed through Earth's magnetotail.</p>

<p>"To my surprise, the remote sensing observations showed that the water formation in Earth's magnetotail is almost identical to the time when the Moon was outside of the Earth's magnetotail," said Li.</p>

<p>"This indicates that, in the magnetotail, there may be additional formation processes or new sources of water not directly associated with the implantation of solar wind protons. In particular, radiation by high energy electrons exhibits similar effects as the solar wind protons," he explained.</p>

<p>The planetary boundaries are a set of framework designed by scientists within which humanity can continue to develop and thrive for generations to come.</p>

<p>These nine planetary boundaries were first proposed by a group of 29 internationally renowned scientists in 2009.</p>

<p>Of these, six boundaries have been transgressed.&nbsp;They are&nbsp;biosphere integrity, climate change, freshwater changes, land system change, the introduction of novel entities such as synthetic chemicals and nuclear waste, biogeochemical flows such as the movement of nitrogen through global element cycles.</p>

<p>"We are in very bad shape," said study co-author Johan Rockstrom, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany.</p>

<p>"We show in this analysis that the planet is losing resilience and the patient is sick."</p>

<p>On Wednesday (Sept 13), the scientists of the study said that they had updated the list from 2015, and added a sixth factor to the unsafe category.</p>

<p>Rockstrom said that water went from "barely safe" to the "out-of-bounds" category because of worsening river run-off, better measurements and understanding of the problem.</p>

<p>These boundaries "determine the fate of the planet", he said, adding that nine factors have been "scientifically well established" by numerous outside studies.</p>

<p>"If Earth can manage these nine factors, Earth could be relatively safe. But it's not," he said.</p>

<p>He said that the failing resilience could make it impossible to reach the 1.5C climate goal and could bring the world closer to real tipping points.</p>

<p>The research, which was based on 2,000 studies, indicated that several planetary boundaries were passed long ago.</p>

<p>"This update finds that six of the nine boundaries are transgressed, suggesting that Earth is now well outside of the safe operating space for humanity,” the scientists said.</p>

<p>Advocate Divan said that Karnataka had already discharged water as mandated by CWMA and added that it takes three days for it to travel to Tamil Nadu.</p>

<p>But Rohatgi said that water has not been made available to the lower riparian state despite orders from CWMA.</p>

<p>Then Justice Gavai said, "Why do you not go before the authority? We do not have expertise in this. How can we pass any order? Please approach the authorities."</p>

<p>Justice Narasimha later said that the authority's orders were not being complied with.</p>

<p>Rohatgi informed the court that the Tamil Nadu state was also running out of water and that there was a “huge deficit”.</p>

<h2><strong>Hearing now on Sept 1</strong></h2>

<p>Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the central government, then informed the apex court Bench that the CWMA would be meeting on Monday, following which the court listed the next hearing on September 1.</p>

<p>"Living with this level of water stress jeopardizes people’s lives, jobs, food and energy security. Water is central to growing crops and raising livestock, producing electricity, maintaining human health, fostering equitable societies and meeting the world’s climate goals," the research said. Increasing water stress is threatening countries’ economic growth as well as the world’s food security.</p>

<h2><strong>Which countries are facing the worst water stress?</strong></h2>

<p>As per the research, 25 countries, including Bahrain, Cyprus, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman and Qatar are exposed to high water stress annually. This means that such countries use more than 80 per cent of their renewable water supply for irrigation, livestock, industry and domestic needs.</p>

<p>"Even a short-term drought puts these places in danger of running out of water and sometimes prompts governments to shut off the taps," the research said. The water stress in Bahrain, Cyprus, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman and Qatar is mostly driven by low supply, paired with demand from domestic, agricultural and industrial use.</p>

<p>The most water-stressed regions, meanwhile are the Middle East and North Africa, where 83 per cent of the population is exposed to extremely high water stress, and South Asia, where 74 per cent of people are exposed.</p>

<h2><strong>Situation to worsen</strong></h2>

<p>The research also said that by 2050, an additional one billion people are expected to live with extremely high water stress, even if the world limits global temperature rise to 1.3 degrees C to 2.4 degrees C (2.3 degrees F to 4.3 degrees F) by 2100, an optimistic scenario.</p>

<p>"Global water demand is projected to increase by 20 per cent to 25% by 2050, while the number of watersheds facing high year-to-year variability, or less predictable water supplies, is expected to increase by 19 per cent," it added.</p>

<p>This means that for the Middle East and North Africa, their entire population will live with extremely high water stress by 2050. And this is not just a problem for consumers and water-reliant industries but for political stability.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Water demand spiking in Africa</strong></h2>

<p>By 2050, water demand in Sub-Saharan Africa is expected to skyrocket by 163 per cent. Even though most countries in this region are not extremely water-stressed, demand is growing faster there than in any other region in the world. This increase in water use, mainly expected for irrigation and domestic water supply, could foster major economic growth in Africa.</p>

Research says 25 countries are facing extremely high water stress

<p>Indian national capital's Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, has announced a plan to install 500 water ATMs across the city to provide drinking water treated using the Reverse Osmosis (RO) process to residents in slums and densely populated areas.</p>

<p>During an inspection of an RO plant in Delhi's Mayapuri, Kejriwal revealed that four water ATMs have already been installed, with 500 more planned for the first phase.</p>

<h2><strong>20 litres per person</strong></h2>

<p>Each person will reportedly receive a card that allows them to draw 20 litres of purified water per day from these ATMs. The ATMs will be strategically placed near slums and other areas where laying pipelines for water supply is challenging. Water sourced from tube wells will be treated at the RO plants before being distributed through the water ATMs.</p>

<p>Kejriwal emphasised that this initiative aims to ensure that even economically disadvantaged individuals have access to safe drinking water.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Talking to reporters, the chief minister, as per a Hindustan Times report, said: "This card is like a water ATM. Through this, each person will get 20 litres of purified water in areas with inadequate drinking water facilities."</p>

<p>"We know rich people install RO at their home, but now poor people will drink the same water," he remarked.</p>

<h2><strong>How the 'Water ATM' will work</strong></h2>

<p>The water ATMs, as per a PTI report, will function like a water bank, offering purified water to those living in areas with inadequate drinking water facilities.</p>

<p>Earlier this year, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) received directives from the chief minister to address the issue of contaminated water in various parts of the city. As part of the plan, RO-based purification plants will be set up in 20 slum clusters across Delhi to provide clean drinking water.</p>

<p>A video from inside the parliament captured the moment on Thursday (July 13) when an opposition party member threw water at Prime Minister Kurti and his deputy.</p>

<p>The confrontation quickly escalated as lawmakers from both the opposition and governing coalition rushed toward the podium where the ministers were seated.</p>

<p>The Speaker of the Parliament, Glauk Konjufca, condemned the violence and delayed the session for two hours.&nbsp;"What happened at Kosovo parliament is unacceptable and use of violence in punishable," the speaker said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The parliamentary debate was sparked by the release of an audio conversation between the chairwoman of Kurti's party, Mimoza Kusari-Lila, and the former Serb lawmaker, Slavko Simic.</p>
