<p>At least three people have died while three others have been hospitalised after drinking milkshakes contaminated with listeria bacteria at a restaurant in Washington, USA.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a release by the Washington State Department of Health, investigators found the outbreak related to ice cream machines that were not cleaned properly at a&nbsp;Frugals restaurant in Tacoma.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Listeria bacteria found in all milkshake flavours sold at Frugals restaurant at 10727 Pacific Ave. S., Tacoma, WA are associated with a foodborne listeriosis outbreak linked to six hospitalisations and three deaths," read the statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Although the restaurant stopped using its ice cream machines on August 8, Listeria can still sicken people up to 70 days later.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reports state that the victims (five people in Pierce County and one person in Thurston County) were hospitalised between February 27 and July 22. Investigations revealed that the bacteria inside the milkshakes were the same strain of Listeria that triggered hospitalisations.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The health department said anyone who ate at the Tacoma restaurant between May 29 and August 7 and is showing symptoms of Listeria is urged to contact a doctor at the earliest.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The senior government source said that order is expected Wednesday. The White House declined to comment on Tuesday.</p>

<p>Biden administration officials have stressed for months any restrictions on US&nbsp;investment in China will be narrowly targeted.</p>

<p>“These are tailored measures,” National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said in April. “They are not, as Beijing says, a ‘technology blockade’.”</p>

<p>US&nbsp;Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said in March the administration did not “want to be overly broad…. Anything that’s overly broad hurts American workers and the economy.”</p>

<p>The administration is expected to target active investment such as US&nbsp;private equity, venture capital and joint venture investments in China in semiconductors, quantum computing and artificial intelligence.</p>

<p>Most investments captured by the order will require that the government be notified about them, sources have said. Some transactions will be prohibited.</p>

<p>Acting Chief Pamela Smith, recently appointed as the leader of the Metropolitan Police Department, provided an update to the press near the crime scene.</p>

<p>Based on preliminary findings, Chief Smith said that the individuals involved in the shooting knew each other, and the incident did not appear to be random or connected to the nearby soccer game.</p>

<p>The building, which was formerly owned by the Pakistan Embassy, was put for sale a few months back, after it underwent a change in its property classification. The News reports that the historic building was downgraded to blighted status by the District of Columbia, which ultimately resulted in increased taxes on its assessed value.</p>

<h2><strong>A crumbling building</strong></h2>

<p>According to the report, the now-crumbling building underwent a change of class status and was put up for auction last year.</p>

<p>The well-known R Street building, which previously functioned as a chancery, attracted three bids. However, the bidding process was reportedly abruptly cancelled by Pakistani authorities without providing any explanation.</p>

<p>Earlier this year, the local authorities further downgraded the property status, classifying it as Class 4 — taxed at $10 per $100 of assessed value — due to its deteriorated condition, which added more burden to the national finances.</p>

<p>The Department of Buildings of the local government determines a building as blighted if it poses a threat to health, safety, or general welfare. Factors considered include whether the building is boarded up, if doors, windows, and other openings are secure, if exterior walls are free from damage, graffiti, and decay, and if exposed metal and wood surfaces are protected.</p>

<p>Initially classified as Class 2 from 2018 to 2019 due to its commercial nature, the building was later categorized as Class 3 from 2020 to 2022 as it remained vacant. In April 2023, the property's classification was further downgraded to Class 4, reflecting its deteriorated condition.</p>

<p>Due to a lack of proper maintenance, the building deteriorated over time, despite former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani approving repairs through a $7 million loan from the National Bank of Pakistan in 2010.</p>

<p>"He [Xi] has stated publicly that he has challenged the People’s Liberation Army to develop the military capability to unify Taiwan with China by 2027. So he didn’t say, ‘I’ve decided to attack and invade’," Milley explained.</p>

<p>Milley noted Xi didn't outrightly say he was going to invade Taiwan, albeit, he insinuated by giving his military a timeframe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“He said, you generals, you develop the capability to do that; we’ll make the decision later. There’s a very subtle distinction there,” he added.</p>

<h2><strong>US military should accelerate modernisation&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Milley called upon the US military to accelerate military modernisation to retain superiority and deter Beijing from invading Taiwan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“You want to make sure that every single day President Xi wakes up and says today’s not that day, and that decision never comes,” Milley said.</p>

<p>“The faster we move [on military modernisation], the faster we can retain military superiority, then I believe … we are more likely than not to deter war...and if war does happen, we will prevail.”</p>

<p>The statement by the Pentagon officials comes a few days after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's meeting with Xi wherein the former said Washington did not support Taiwan's independence bid.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;"At the same time, we and many others have deep concerns about some of the provocative actions that China has taken in recent years going back to 2016," Blinken told reporters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the meeting between Blinken and Xi, the Chinese president urged the US not to "hurt China's legitimate rights and interests", a sign towards potential flashpoints such as Taiwan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Continuing on my journey to listen to a variety of voices, I recently went on a 190 km ‘American Truck Yatra’ from Washington DC to New York. Much like my Truck Yatra from Delhi to Chandigarh here in India, I enjoyed a candid heart-to-heart conversation - this time centred around the everyday lives of Indian-origin Truck drivers in America,” he wrote in the&nbsp;video’s description.</p>

<p>“Was happy to find out that our brothers in America earn fair wages, and work in a system that is focused on the ‘Driver’s comfort’. The hardworking Truck drivers’ community in India deserves a life of dignity too, and an inclusive vision that takes them forward is bound to have a positive cascading effect on the economy of our entire country,” he further added.</p>

<p>During their ride, Gandhi noted that the trucks in the United States were designed as per the needs and comfort of the driver, something that according to him was not being taken care of in the Indian vehicles.</p>

<p>The Congress leader also remarked that the truck drivers in India were struggling to make ends meet, whereas their American counterparts were receiving decent wages.</p>

<p>“Trucks in India have nothing to do with the comfort of drivers and in comparison, with India, safety in the US roads are much better,” Gandhi said.</p>

<p>“As compared to India we earn a lot and drivers here earn anywhere between $8-10k (Rs. 8-10 lakhs) every month. There is a lot of work here and people who don’t have an opportunity to study or invest in a business they can opt to be a truck driver in the US. We are happy with our families in the US as truck drivers which is difficult to comprehend in India,” the driver, Taljinder Singh, replied to Gandhi.</p>

<p>The Congress party released a statement saying that there were a lot of lessons that could be drawn from the American industry and incorporated in India.</p>

<p>"There are a lot of lessons we can draw from the American truck industry to plan a new vision for the truck industry here in India. Indian truck drivers are the lifeline of our logistics and deserve a life of dignity too," the statement said.</p>
