Germany, asked its citizens to leave Iran, adding, "German citizens are at concrete risk of being arbitrarily arrested and interrogated and being given long prison sentences. Dual citizens with Iranian and German nationality are especially at risk."

Biden held his first direct talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping last week, since their meeting in November, where the US president emphasised "the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and the rule of law and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea," the White House said in a statement.

The United States on Friday (Mar 30) announced that it is set to impose fresh visa restrictions on Hong Kong officials following the crackdown on rights in the Chinese-ruled city.&nbsp;

The development came after a new national security law came into force.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken released a statement saying that in the past year China "continued to take actions against Hong Kong's promised high degree of autonomy, democratic institutions, and rights and freedoms."

"In response, the Department of State is announcing that it is taking steps to impose new visa restrictions on multiple Hong Kong officials responsible for the intensifying crackdown on rights and freedoms," Blinken said in a statement.

However, he did not share details on the officials that would be targeted in the latest sanctions.

He stated that the crackdown included the passage of 'Article 23', which is a national security law that is aimed at targeting several crimes such as treason, insurrection, espionage, and theft of state secrets among others.

The announcement by Blinken case after the annual review of Hong Kong's autonomy by Washington.

"This year, I have again certified that Hong Kong does not warrant treatment under U.S. laws in the same manner as the laws were applied to Hong Kong before July 1, 1997," Blinken said.

The Biden administration is "doing everything" it can to improve the H-1B visa process, the White House said on Wednesday (Feb 29) amid worries over delays in the visas issued in large numbers by IT firms, mainly from India.

A White House spokesperson also said that the backlog in 'green card' for permanent residency, and other issues related to the country's legal immigration system, were all being worked upon.

"One of the steps, if we look at the H-1B visa process, we have taken action to improve that and the process and backlog for lawful permanent residents (green card) who are eligible to become US citizens," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference.

The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa which permits companies based out of the United States to hire foreign nationals for specialised jobs that require advanced technical or theoretical training. A large number of these visas are lapped up every year by big Indian tech firms.

Jean-Pierre informed that efforts were being made to streamline the visa process, responding to concerns raised by a section of Indian Americans who were sceptical of Biden's efforts addressing the woes of legal immigrants as the US president was doing for illegal immigrants.

Biden on Thursday (Feb 29) will head to the southern border with Mexico in Texas.

"Just last month, for example, as a part of our efforts to strengthen the integrity of our immigration system and reduce the potential for fraud, the DHS [Department of Homeland Security] published a final rule relating to H-1B visa," Jean-Pierre said.

Meanwhile, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced that it will come up with myUSCIS organisational accounts that will permit numerous people within an organisation, along with their legal representatives, to team up and prepare H-1B registrations, H-1B petitions and any associated Form I-907, Request for Premium Processing Service.

A new organisational account would be required to take part in the H-1B Electronic Registration Process starting in March 2024, the USCIS said.

"We are working expeditiously to address any technical issues that may arise for legal representatives whose accounts migrated when they logged into their online account on or after February 14, 2024, including impacts on cases other than H-1B filings," it said.

The initial registration period for FY 2025 H-1B cap will begin at noon Eastern on March 6, and run through noon Eastern on March 22.

"In March, we will launch online filing of Form I-129 and associated Form I-907 for non-cap H-1B petitions. On April 1, USCIS will begin accepting online filing for H-1B cap petitions and associated Forms I-907 for petitioners whose registrations have been selected,” the federal agency said.

An Indian-origin man died this week in Washington, United States after he got involved in a scuffle outside a restaurant and suffered life-threatening injuries. 
 
The 41-year-old Indian-American executive Vivek Taneja, a resident of&nbsp;Virginia, was at two sister Japanese restaurants along with the suspect on February 2, according to the police report. He was "knocked to the ground by the suspect and hit his head on the pavement", read the police report. 
 
The incident&nbsp;comes amid a sudden increase in attacks and deaths of Indians and Indian-Americans in the United States.

<h2 lang="en-US">Police hunt for the suspect</h2>

Taneja had left the restaurant at around 2 am local time and got involved in a skirmish on a nearby street, as per the police report. The specific nature of the dispute was, however, not specified.

A reward of $25,000 has been announced&nbsp;by the police&nbsp;to anyone who provides&nbsp;information that would lead&nbsp;to the suspect's arrest and conviction. 
 
Earlier this week, an Indian student Syed Mazahir Ali was attacked by robbers in Chicago and the video of him bleeding from his nose and mouth was shared on social media. 
 
Ali, whose family resides in the Indian city of Hyderabad, was seen pleading for help after the attack in the video. 
 
Five Indian-origin students have till now been reported dead in the United States this year.

<h2>Iran-backed militia responsible for Jordan attacks</h2>

Amid the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, the White House also blamed an Iran-backed militia group for the drone attack on Al-Tanf, a US military site&nbsp;in Jordan, earlier this week.&nbsp;

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said US intelligence believed&nbsp;the Islamic Resistance in Iraq was responsible for the attack that killed three soldiers and injured 40.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;two-tranche short-term funding bill will keep the government afloat which otherwise would have capsized after hitting the midnight deadline of January 19.&nbsp;

According to the new resolution, the bill would fund the government through&nbsp;March 1 and March 8.&nbsp;Missing the first deadline would have meant&nbsp;delay in payments&nbsp;to federal employees and severe disruption to many government services deemed non-essential.

The second government funding deadline, set to expire on February 2, focuses on eight&nbsp;appropriation&nbsp;areas such as defence, commerce, homeland security and financial service among others that may have lost funding if the bipartisan agreement was not reached.

While an agreement has been reached on the short-term bill, known as&nbsp;a continuing resolution or “CR", it will still have to pass both House and Senate before Friday (Jan 19).

The reported signing of the deal by House and Senate leaders comes a few days after they reached an agreement to set the overall spending level for fiscal year 2024 at $1.41 trillion.&nbsp;
