Does Ukraine only want these particular drones?

No, as Russia increasingly uses kamikaze drones and targets civilian infrastructure, Ukraine has made several requests for the United States to give it sophisticated drones. Its most recent request was for anti-drone missiles.

Why is the US hesitant to grant Ukraine's request?

While the Pentagon hasn't publicly stated its position, it is believed that the denial was motivated by worries that the drones could intensify the conflict and the belief that they are not necessary for Ukraine's military effort. Additionally, there are concerns that drones might be shot down.

The president urged the nation's citizens to conserve energy, asking them to be "mindful and redistribute their consumption throughout the day".

More than 950,000 customers were disconnected as a result of new restrictions the grid operator placed on the distribution of electricity on Monday, said Kovalenko.

Even as regions across Ukraine experience regular blackouts, grid operator Ukrenergo on Tuesday announced that the country will see additional planned shutdowns.

Russian state-run TASS news agency reported late last week, that as per Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin Kyiv's refusal to negotiate is the cause of the blackouts and Russia's attacks on energy infrastructure.

US hails Ukraine’s ‘extraordinary victory’ in Kherson, says it will have ‘broader strategic implications’

The US and Russia have decided to resume talks related to the New START nuclear arms reduction deal, which was put on hold since before Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

New START, or Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, was signed between the United States and Russia. Its formal name is Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms. It is the only surviving weapons control pact between the two biggest nuclear powers in the world.

The bilateral consultative committee (BCC), the mechanism for its implementation, will meet "in the near future," said Ned Price, spokesperson for the US State Department, on Tuesday.

US, Russia to restart talks on New START nuclear arms reduction deal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that he is ready to have “genuine peace talks” with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin but laid out certain conditions. His shift in stance comes after the West nudged the Ukrainian leader to initiate discussions with Putin to achieve a long-lasting solution to the conflict.

Among the conditions set out by Zelensky include returning Ukrainian control over its territories, ensure reparations for destruction and bringing to justice perpetrators of war crimes.

However, it is believed that Russia would not agree to the preconditions listed out by the Ukrainian leader and hence the probability of the talks being held is pretty low.

On Tuesday briefing reporters outside Number 10, Sunak referred to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saying: “Putin’s war in Ukraine has destabilised energy markets and supply chains the world over.”

Disclaimer: A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While WION takes utmost care to accurately report this developing news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed on Monday (October 24) that Russia had ordered around 2,000 drones from Iran. During a speech at a conference organised by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Zelensky said, "The disgusting sound of Iranian drones is heard in our skies every night." The Ukrainian president claimed that Russia apparently ordered the same ones that Moscow has been allegedly using in its recent attacks against Ukraine. "Russia ordered about 2,000 'Shaheds' from Iran," Zelensky added. However, there's no clarity if Zelensky was referring to Russia's past purchases or new ones. Iran denies allegations Tehran on Saturday warned against using "provocative approaches" after some of the European countries called for a UN investigation into Iranian drones being allegedly used by Russia in the ongoing Ukraine war. After the EU and Britain imposed further sanctions on Tehran this week, France, Britain, and Germany demanded an "impartial" probe into the situation in a letter to the UN on Friday. So far, Iran has denied that it provided Russia with weapons for use in the Ukraine war. On the other hand, Kremlin said that it had no knowledge of its army using such weapons and Moscow accused the West of seeking to put "pressure" on Tehran with the allegations. Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani said in a statement: "The Islamic Republic of Iran considers the current provocative approaches of the European Union and the United Kingdom to be part of a targeted political scenario." Zelensky promises 'victory' over Russia on Ukraine's Defenders Day

Russian missiles pounded more than 40 Ukrainian cities and towns, officials said on Thursday, after a U.N. General Assembly resolution called Moscow's annexation of Ukrainian territory "illegal" and Ukraine's allies committed more military aid.

Russia repeated its position that the West, by helping Ukraine, indicated that "they are a direct party to the conflict" and warned the admission of Ukraine to NATO could trigger World War Three.

"Kyiv is well aware that such a step would mean a guaranteed escalation to a World War Three," deputy secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Alexander Venediktov, told the state TASS news agency on Thursday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a surprise bid for fast-track membership of the NATO military alliance at the end of September after Russian President Vladimir Putin held a ceremony in Moscow to proclaim four partially occupied regions as annexed Russian land.

In the past 24 hours, Russian missiles hit more than 40 settlements, while Ukraine's air force carried out 32 strikes on 25 Russian targets, Ukraine's Armed Forces General Staff said.

Mayor of the port city of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Senkevich, said in a social media post that the southern city was "massively shelled".

"A five-storey residential building was hit, the two upper floors were completely destroyed, the rest – under rubble. Rescuers are working on the site,” he said.

A shipbuilding centre and a port on the Southern Bug river off the Black Sea, Mykolaiv has suffered heavy Russian bombardments throughout the war.

Russia also targeted a settlement in the region of Ukraine's capital Kyiv using explosive drones early on Thursday, the region's administration said on the Telegram messaging app.

Governor of the Kyiv region, Oleksiy Kuleba, said, based on preliminary information, the strikes were caused by Iranian-made loitering munitions. These are often known as "kamikaze drones".

Critical infrastructure facilities were hit by the drones, said Kyrylo Tymoshenko, the deputy head of Zelenskyy's office.

Missiles struck more than 30 multi-storey and private houses, gas pipelines and power lines in the city of Nikopol in the Dnipropetrovsk region, and more than 2,000 families were left without electricity, Dnipropetrovsk Governor Valentyn Reznichenko wrote on Telegram.

Reuters was not able to immediately verify the report.

NATO's secretary-general, Jens Stoltenberg, said Russia's missile attacks were a sign of weakness. "Russia is actually losing on the battlefield," Stoltenberg said.

As his forces have lost ground since September, Putin has intensified the conflict, ordering the call-up of hundreds of thousands of reservists, proclaiming the annexation of occupied Ukrainian territory and repeatedly threatening to use nuclear weapons to protect Russia.

Putin has threatened to use nuclear weapons to protect Russian soil, which he says includes the four regions he declared annexed last month.

U.S. President Joe Biden said on Wednesday he doubted Putin would resort to nuclear weapons. A senior NATO official said a Russian nuclear strike would almost certainly trigger a "physical response"from Ukraine's allies and potentially NATO.

In New York, three-quarters of the 193-member General Assembly - 143 countries - voted on Wednesday in favour of a resolution condemning Russia's "attempted illegal annexation" of the four partially occupied regions.

Only four countries joined Russia in voting against the resolution - Syria, Nicaragua, North Korea and Belarus. Thirty-five countries abstained from the vote, including Russia's strategic partner China, while the rest did not vote.

Moscow in September proclaimed its annexation of four partially occupied regions in Ukraine - Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia - after staging what it called referendums.

Zelenskyy said on Twitter he was "grateful to 143 states that supported the historic #UNGA resolution ...(Russia's) attempt at annexation is worthless."

In Brussels, more than 50 Western countries met to pledge more military aid to Ukraine, especially air defence weapons, on the heels of heavy retaliatory strikes this week ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin in response to an explosion on a bridge in Crimea.

Pledges from allies included an announcement by Francethat it would deliver radar and air defence systems to Ukraine in the coming weeks. Britainpledged air defence missiles, and Canada saidit would provide artillery rounds among other supplies.

At the meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group in Brussels, U.S. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said Russia's latest attacks laid bare its "malice and cruelty" since invading Ukraine on Feb. 24. At least 26 people have been killed since Monday in Russian missile attacks across Ukraine.

Ukraine had shifted momentum since September with extraordinary gains, but would need more help, he said. "... We're going to do everything we can to make sure that they have what's required to be effective," Austin told reporters.

Since Monday's attacks, Germany has sent the first of four IRIS-T SLM air defence systems, while Washington said it would speed up delivery of a promised NASAMS air defence system.

"The more assistance Ukraine gets now, the sooner we'll come to an end to the Russian war," Zelenskyy said by video to a forum during International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meetings in Washington.

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the General Assembly ahead of the vote that the resolution was "politicised and openly provocative," adding that it could "destroy" efforts to reach a diplomatic solution.

Russian missiles pounded more than 40 Ukrainian cities and towns, officials said on Thursday, after a U.N. General Assembly resolution called Moscow's annexation of Ukrainian territory "illegal" and Ukraine's allies committed more military aid.
