A 12-year-old Indian boy from the state of Maharashtra is being praised for his presence of mind and calmness after handling a close encounter with a leopard. Mohit Ahire, in Nashik’s Malegaon, not only managed to escape without a scratch but also trapped the wild animal.

What happened?

A video of the incident caught on a CCTV camera has since gone viral. The footage shows Ahire, reportedly the son of a wedding hall security guard, engrossed in his mobile phone which was connected to a charger when he saw the leopard enter the room he was in.

However, the wild animal did not seem to notice the boy as it walked inside the office. Subsequently, the 12-year-old without panicking got up from his seat and left the room, closing the door behind him.

In 2019, an unmanned space probe called Beresheet crashed into the moon, scattering its cargo on the lunar surface. Included in the cargo were tardigrades, a nearly indestructible critter that is known for its ability to survive in any environment. But can they survive an environment as foreign as that on the moon? Here's all you need to know.

The doomed spacecraft

In April 2019, Israeli spacecraft, originally designated SpaceIL, was a lunar lander funded and built by the non-profit organisation SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries. Israel Space Agency provided technical support for it.

The spacecraft, which was launched on February 22, 2019, attempted a soft landing on April 11.

As per the NASA website, the plan was for Beresheet to land in Mare Serenitatis and transmit data from the surface for about 2 days.

However, due to the main engine failure, it crashed on the lunar surface.

Its precious cargo included tardigrades and "lunar library" - something resembling a DVD that contains a 30-million-page archive of human history viewable under microscopes, as well as human DNA - was being carried on the Beresheet robot lander.

Tardigrades on moon

Aboard the Beresheet spacecraft were water bears or tardigrades, creatures which are under a millimetre long and can survive despite being heated to 150C or being frozen to almost absolute zero.

They were dehydrated and placed in suspended animation before being loaded on to the spacecraft.

Back then, Arch Mission Foundation boss Nova Spivack, as quoted by BBC, said that they "believe the chances of survival for the tardigrades… are extremely high."

Now, as per a Science Alert report, these tiny animals may have colonised the moon thanks to their remarkable abilities to survive almost anything.

Apparently, laboratory tests have shown that frozen specimens of tardigrade's Hypsibius dujardini species, travelling in a vacuum, were fatally damaged when smashed into sand. However, at a little slower — 2,600 km/h or less — they survived. The moon crash was slower than that, so the chances of water bears on the moon would be very high, if not for the lack of liquid water necessary for their survival.

A 31-year-old UK man has stunned doctors with his remarkable recovery after 'dying' twice when his heart stopped for almost an hour following a cardiac arrest at home last June.

In June 2023, Barnsley resident Ben Wilson fainted in his partner Rebekka Holmes' arms after complaining of chest pain. Emergency services were called and in the meantime, Holmes performed CPR on her unconscious boyfriend.

Paramedics had to shock Wilson's heart 17 times to revive him, with his heart technically stopping twice within 50 minutes.

After being rushed to hospital for emergency surgery, he had to be placed in a coma for five weeks to reduce brain injury from temporary oxygen deprivation. Doctors initially gave his partner Rebekka Holmes grim outlooks on his chances of survival, suggesting he might end up in a vegetative state similar to F1 legend Michael Schumacher.

However, despite these bleak predictions, Wilson, a traffic management operative, defied the odds and is now back home after his near-death experience. He had to relearn basic skills like walking and talking and is now planning his wedding after proposing to Holmes in December. According to her, he only suffers from very slight speech and short-term memory issues.

What caused the cardiac arrest?

Wilson's cardiac arrest as per doctors was due to a blood clot blocking an artery in his heart. They say that Wilson's unhealthy habits, such as sedentary gaming, smoking, and a poor diet, likely contributed to the blood clot that triggered his heart attack.

Without the quick CPR performed by Miss Holmes, his chances of survival would have been significantly lower. When professional help arrived, the medical team had to work tirelessly to save him.

'Love conquers all': UK man legally dead for 50 mins comes back to life. Here's the miraculous story

Even as Artificial Intelligence has become an integral part of our lives, the question of how to effectively communicate with AI chatbots continues to constantly puzzle and frustrate people.

However, a recent study aimed at refining prompts given to a chatbot model revealed a surprising finding: Star Trek may hold the key.

'Live long, and prosper'

Rick Battle and Teja Gollapudi from software firm VMware in California, the authors of the study found that asking an AI chatbot to speak as if it were on Star Trek significantly improved its ability to solve basic maths problems.

The study, which was first reported by New Scientist and published on arXiv, aimed to study the impact of "positive thinking" prompts on AI chatbot performance.

The machine learning authors observed that the quality of chatbot responses is heavily influenced by the nature of the prompts given to them, a phenomenon not entirely understood.

"It's both surprising and irritating that trivial modifications to the prompt can exhibit such dramatic swings in performance," said the stud authors as reported by Business Insider.

Study methodology

The study involved feeding three Large Language Models (LLM) with 60 human-written prompts, encouraging positive thinking. These prompts were then used to guide the AI in solving grade-school-level maths problems, with the quality of the output determining the success of the prompts.

The results showed that automatic optimisation consistently outperformed handwritten prompts, indicating that machine-learning models are more adept at crafting prompts for themselves than humans. However, positive statements in the prompts yielded unexpected results, such as one AI's improved performance when prompted with a Star Trek-themed statement.

Study authors say they did not aim to expose the AI model as a Trekkie or a fan of Star Trek. However, one of the best-performing prompts was: "System Message: Command, we need you to plot a course through this turbulence and locate the source of the anomaly. Use all available data and your expertise to guide us through this challenging situation."

The researchers highlighted that while the model's proficiency in mathematical reasoning seemed to be enhanced by expressing an affinity for Star Trek, this doesn't mean the AI should be asked to speak like a Starfleet commander.

Instead, it underscores the complex interplay of factors that influence AI performance.

Catherine Flick from Staffordshire University emphasised that AI models are essentially black boxes, making it challenging to understand their decision-making process.

"One thing is for sure: the model is not a Trekkie," said Flick.

"It doesn't 'understand' anything better or worse when preloaded with the prompt, it just accesses a different set of weights and probabilities for acceptability of the outputs than it does with the other prompts," she added.

So, how does one write the perfect prompt? Study author Rick Battle suggests letting the model generate its own prompts rather than hand-writing them.

In a remarkable medical case, doctors at a Delhi-based hospital successfully removed 39 coins and 37 magnets from a man's intestine through surgery.

The man, as per media reports, had ingested the coins and magnets under the mistaken belief that zinc aids in body-building.

What happened?

At Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, a 26-year-old patient who is reportedly suffering from a psychiatric illness came to the emergency ward with complaints of persistent vomiting and abdominal pain lasting over 20 days.

The patient also reported he could not eat anything.

During examination in the outpatient department, the patient's family revealed that for the past few weeks, he had been consuming coins and magnets.

Additionally, they revealed that the patient who has not been identified by name was undergoing treatment for a "known case of psychiatric illness", reports ANI.

A hidden treasure

An x-ray of the patient's abdomen revealed a 'hidden treasure' of coins and magnets. Doctors spotted radio-opaque shadows resembling the items. A subsequent CT scan confirmed that there was a significant accumulation of coins and magnets, which were causing intestinal blockage. These surprising heaps necessitated an immediate surgical intervention.

During the surgery, doctors discovered that the magnets and coins had formed two separate loops in the small intestine, which were pulling together because of the magnetic effect, leading to erosion.

The coins and magnets were meticulously removed, and the two loops were rejoined through separate anastomoses — a surgical procedure to join two structures.

Further exploration revealed a substantial number of coins in the stomach, which were also extracted, and the stomach was repaired.

The medical team successfully extracted 39 coins from the patient's digestive tract. These coins comprised Rs 1, 2, and 5 coins. Additionally, they also removed 37 magnets of various shapes, including heart, spherical, star, bullet, and triangle.

Following the successful procedure, an operative x-ray confirmed the complete removal of all foreign objects and the patient was discharged in a healthy condition after a week-long hospital stay.

Later, the patient revealed that he had swallowed the coins and magnets believing that zinc would aid in body-building. The coins contained zinc, and he ingested the magnets to ensure the coins remained in the intestine for enhanced zinc absorption.

Nothing lasts forever, but for Bobi, the Portuguese mastiff, his title as the "world's oldest" dog didn't even last a year. In a surprising turn of events, on Thursday (Feb 22) Bobi was dethroned by Guinness World Records (GWR). The canine's title was revoked after officials could not substantiate his age claims.

What Guinness World Record said

In a statement, GWR declared that it "no longer has the evidence it needs to support Bobi's claim as the record holder."

The dog's owners had asserted that Bobi was 31 years and five months old when he passed away in October. This age, equivalent to approximately 220 canine years, had initially secured Bobi's position as both the oldest living dog and the oldest dog ever recorded by GWR.

However, doubts surrounding Bobi's age surfaced soon after his "coronation". Veterinary experts questioned the feasibility of a dog living that long, with some pointing to discrepancies in photographs of Bobi from 1999 compared to those taken before his death in Portugal last year.

While Bobi's age had been registered on Portugal's national pet database, critics noted that this was based on the owners' self-certification, and pet microchipping in Portugal only began in 2008. Genetic testing confirmed that Bobi was indeed old but could not pinpoint his exact age.

False claims

Danny Chambers, a vet and council member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, soon after Bobi's death suggested that claims about the dog's age were false.

Chambers emphasised the implausibility of a dog living over 30 years, likening it to a human living beyond 200 years was inconceivable.

"This is the equivalent of a human living to over 200 years old which, given our current medical capabilities, is completely implausible. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and no concrete evidence has been provided to prove his age," he said.

An investigation by the technology magazine Wired discovered the Portuguese database had "no registration or data that can confirm or deny" the owners' claims that Bobi was born in 1992. Despite requests for clarification, Bobi's owner, Leonel Costa, did not respond to inquiries.

Following these revelations and concerns raised by experts and media outlets, GWR initiated a review of Bobi's record.

Mark McKinley of GWR, who conducted the review, expressed the organisation's commitment to ensuring the accuracy and integrity of its records.
The European Space Agency (ESA) on Monday (Feb 19) released images of a dead satellite as it tumbles down to Earth in what could potentially be a fiery spectacle.

The dead satellite was part of ESA's scientific Earth-monitoring mission called ERS-2. It was launched on April 21, 1995, and after a 16-year career, it retired in 2011.

During the time it was active, the ERS-2 collected data on polar ice, changing land surfaces, sea-level rise, warming oceans and atmospheric chemistry. Additionally, the satellite was also pressed into service during natural disasters in remote regions.

US President Joe Biden's recent encounter with King Abdullah II of Jordan at the White House has made him the butt of jokes once again. A video of Biden from Monday (Feb 12) is going viral on social media. Ahead of the King of Jordan's speech at the White House, the 81-year-old leader was seen dithering around behind the Jordan leader in confusion.

Another gaffe?

What unfolded in front of the press was a scene of bewildering uncertainty as the US President shuffled around, seemingly unsure of his place during the royal's address.

Welcoming the King, Biden tells him "Your majesty, over to you," before embarking on a display that bordered on comical. Biden, with a puzzled expression, paced behind the king, seemingly searching for the optimal position as Abdullah began his remarks.

His movements behind the podium resembled a hesitant dance, shuffling between spots as if seeking a cue on where to stand. Ultimately, he settled beside Abdullah, his initial choice, albeit after a brief confusion that prompted a light-hearted exchange between the two leaders. "I switched sides on you," Biden told the king, as reported by the New York Post.

This incident follows closely on the heels of a report by special counsel Robert Hur, which refrained from recommending criminal charges against Biden concerning his handling of classified documents.

Hur's assessment pointed to concerns about Biden's memory, painting a picture of an "elderly man with a poor memory," whose recollection faltered, notably in recalling key periods of his vice presidency and the passing of his son, Beau Biden.

Biden’s blunder: US Prez’s confusion during Jordan King’s speech reignites concerns over age. Watch

Harry Potter fans are known for their love of everything magic. This includes, but isn't limited to, wands. In England's Leicestershire, a fan of the iconic series caused a full-blown panic after firearms' officers swarmed a hotel after receiving reports of a man carrying a large knife — which later turned out to be just a Harry Potter fan carrying a wand.

What happened?

Over the weekend, police in Enderby near Leicester responded to a report about a person carrying a large knife near the hotel lifts. The mix-up, as per The Guardian, happened at a large hotel. The concerning call prompted a number of police officers to swarm the hotel.

Upon reaching the hotel, they discovered that the offending weapon was in fact a Harry Potter wand carried by a fan.

A witty post on local police's Facebook page, on Sunday, revealed the goofy incident and jokingly reassured people that "there was no sign of 'Voldemort'."

Writing on behalf of the Blaby police, an officer said: "I attended a large hotel in Enderby this morning with a number of firearms officers, following a report of a male inside near the lifts carrying 'a large knife'."

What makes a proposal 'perfect'? If you are planning on popping "the question" to your partner this Valentine's Day, an Oxford University mathematician has revealed the formula behind the perfect proposal.

Before we reveal the formula, what do you think makes for a perfect proposal? Flowers, a fancy meal, a sandy beach at sunset? Turns out, it is none of these. As per Dr Tom Crawford, a mathematician from Oxford University, the recipe for success is hidden in numbers.

The formula for a 'yes'

"If you follow this recipe for success, you'll be giving yourself the best possible chance of getting that 'Yes'," said the mathematician.

The maths of a perfect proposal has a perfect score of 100. For a 'yes', the proposal must be based on four key factors that are worth 20 points each — the time of the proposal meal, the timing of the proposal itself, the amount of planning you put in and finally the cost of the engagement ring (yes, you need one).

Based on a survey of 2,000 people, Dr Crawford recommends that you start your meal at 8:06 pm, and pop the question after the main course, but before dessert. The engagement ring should cost at least 2.5 months of your salary and finally, you must dedicate at least 68 days to planning the proposal.

It is rightly said that dogs are man's best friend. A canine companion has once again proven this by his unmatched loyalty. In India's Himachal Pradesh, a dog stood and guarded his master's body from wild animals amid snow for 48 hours.

The incident is from Bir-Billing, where Alpha, a German Shepherd stood guard over his human Abhinandan Gupta and his friend Parnita Bal Sahib's bodies at the daunting height of 9,000 feet.

What happened?

Pune residents Gupta and his friend Sahib, as per a Tribune India report had gone to the popular tourist destination Billing on Sunday (Feb 4th) afternoon by a private car. While returning to their base camp at Chogan near Bir, the friends due to heavy snow left their car midway and started making their way on foot along with the dog, Alpha.

But the duo reportedly slipped due to the snow and fell into a deep gorge. Footprints at the scene of the incident suggests that they tried to climb out of the gorge, but failed. They died there, probably due to the acute cold and injuries.

Revenge is a dish best served cold, and what's colder than paying to have your ex neutered? In the United States' South Jersey area, an animal shelter is offering people some harmless fun this Valentine's Day. If you are a resident of Blackwood, New Jersey, at the small price of $50, you can "Neuter Your Ex," or rather, a cat named after your ex.

Valentine's Day gimmick

In recent years, gimmicks like naming a cockroach after your ex have become all the rage, especially around Valentine's, a day which can be hard for jaded/jilted lovers.

A video of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the Pakistani Sufi and classical singer with tremendous fan-following in the Indian subcontinent and the world, has emerged on various social media platforms purportedly showing him beating another man using his footwear. The clip has gone insanely viral.

In the video, not fully clear, one can see the singer beating a man and at one point also dragging him down to the floor before resuming the attack. The man being beaten shows no resistance.

Words like "Kahaan hai meri bottle?" (Hindi for "Where is my bottle?) can be heard being said in the video. Towards the end, Khan asks the man he was beating to leave the room and bring back the bottle.

WION can, however, not independently verify the authenticity of the video.

The ardent but heartbroken fans said they couldn't believe that this was the same man who sang beautiful songs like "Mann ki Lagan", "Afreen Afreen" (Coke Studio version) and many many more.

In a world where food vloggers don’t shy away from trying their hands on weird concoctions, a new emerging trend is taking internet by storm. We all know how both ‘chai’ and ‘Biryani’ are loved by Indians like nothing else. Have you ever wondered what a mix of the two good tastes would be like? A viral video does the job of finding the answer to the exact same question, which has left the online world scratching its head.

The viral clip shows a woman telling the recipe of ‘Biryani chai,’ prompting an intense user engagement on social media.

The video, featuring ‘Neha Deepak Shah’, starts with the woman putting cinnamon, star anise, black peppercorn, cardamom and fennel seeds, and tea leaves in boiling water. Once the water reaches boiling point, she puts in crushed ginger and honey in a glass and adds the boiling water into it. This is how she prepares the exotic ‘Biryani Chai.’
