'Deadbots' or digital recreations of lost loved ones are fast becoming a reality, with many companies offering services that can bring back the dead digitally. As amazing as it may sound, AI ethicists have warned that such services would do more harm than good and can even "haunt" users.

What are 'deadbots'?

Deadbots or 'griefbots' are AI chatbots trained to simulate the personality and speech patterns of a dead loved one using the digital footprints — messages, etc — they've left behind.

The ethical dilemma

As per the University of Cambridge researchers, "Artificial intelligence that allows users to hold text and voice conversations with lost loved ones runs the risk of causing psychological harm and even digitally 'haunting' those left behind, without design safety standards."

Researchers from Cambridge University's Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence in a paper published in the journal Philosophy and Technology have highlighted how these deadbots can cause psychological harm or be misused.

'Overwhelming emotional weight'

As per the researchers, such deadbots can distress users, especially children, by insisting their dead parent is still "with you". They contend that while initially, these digital recreations may offer some semblance of comfort, in the losing term, they can cause psychological distress.

An ethical minefield

As per study co-author Dr Katarzyna Nowaczyk-Basińska, "Rapid advancements in generative AI mean that nearly anyone with Internet access and some basic know-how can revive a deceased loved one", it is an "ethical minefield".

"It's important to prioritise the dignity of the deceased, and ensure that this isn't encroached on by financial motives of digital afterlife services, for example."

One potential scenario the researchers propose is the misuse of the "data donor" or the digitally recreated dead loved one, to push products and advertising.

"People might develop strong emotional bonds with such simulations, which will make them particularly vulnerable to manipulation," said co-author Dr Tomasz Hollanek.

They suggest that deadbots should be retired in a "dignified way".

"Methods and even rituals for retiring deadbots in a dignified way should be considered. This may mean a form of digital funeral, for example, or other types of ceremony depending on the social context."

"We recommend design protocols that prevent deadbots being utilised in disrespectful ways, such as for advertising or having an active presence on social media," added Hollanek.

They also call for age restrictions for users and "meaningful transparency" to ensure users are consistently aware that they are interacting with an AI.

"These services run the risk of causing huge distress to people if they are subjected to unwanted digital hauntings from alarmingly accurate AI recreations of those they have lost.
Sensational and even salacious stories about North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in the Western media are nothing new. And now the British publication Daily Star is claiming that every year North Korea'S supreme leader chooses 25 virgin girls to join his "Pleasure Squad".

As per the report citing a North Korean defector, Yeonmi Park, these young girls are picked based on their attractiveness.

Scouting schoolgirls

Park, a 30-year-old who claims to have been scouted twice for the dubious honour of servicing Jong-un, said that to choose the virgins, the leader's 'cronies' visit "every classroom, and they even go to school yards in case they missed someone that was pretty".

"Once they find some pretty girls, the first thing they do is check into their family status—their political status. They eliminate any girls with family members that have escaped from North Korea, or have relatives in South Korea or other countries," she added.

Virginity test

Park has previously said that the Kim dynasty are "paedophiles who expect to be worshipped as gods."

She claims that once the pretty girls are selected, they are made to go through a virginity test. This, the report claimed, is a detailed medical examination where "even the smallest defect" like a minor scar, leads to disqualification.

Why do people allow this?

As per the North Korea defector, conditions in the nation are so grim that families happily allow their daughters to be recruited by the squad scouts because it would at least mean that the girls won't starve.

He devised the idea of these "Pleasure squads' in the 1970s when he would pick pretty girls and place them with his father Kim Il-sung, thinking "he might find that very pleasurable." This eventually helped him get the throne.

With the Lok Sabha elections going on in full swing in India, political parties and their supporters are going the extra mile to reach voters and convince them to vote in their favour. Amid the campaigns and rallies, politicians are also using social media to connect to the citizens and talk about their manifestos. At the same time, some fake videos are making their way to social media that are making people question how much they can trust what they see or hear on the internet.

After Aamir Khan and Ranveer Singh, Allu Arjun has become a victim of fake claims online. An old video of the Pushpa actor is being circulated online, claiming that the actor is campaigning for the Congress party. However, the truth is that the video was originally shot in 2022 when Allu represented India at one of the most well-known annual events organised by the Indian diaspora in the US – the India Day parade. The actor was honoured with the title of grand marshal.

To mark 75 years of India's independence, Allu shared at the time, "It was an honour being the grand marshal at the India Day parade in New York." Check it out below!

With the Lok Sabha elections going on in full swing in India, political parties and their supporters are going the extra mile to reach voters and convince them to vote in their favour.

Japanese capital Tokyo has for some time been battling with 'murder(s) of crows' which have become a problem for people, especially on trash days. The scavenger birds are known to tear open garbage bags and create a mess. However, a machine that tells the birds to "buzz off" has shown success.

A video posted on social media by an X user showed a Swiggy delivery man stealing shoes from the doorstep of a customer. The video was posted by a user named Rohit Arora, who saw the incident unfolding on a CCTV camera outside the gate.

Gujarat Titans (GT) edged past hosts Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a last-ball thriller in match 24 of the IPL 2024 edition on Wednesday (April 10), in Jaipur. Chasing 197, Gujarat needed 73 off the last 30 balls and also lost skipper Shubman Gill (72 off 40 balls) before Rashid Khan's 11-ball 24* and Rahul Tewatia's 11-ball 22 took GT to a win in a last-ball thriller.

Not many had given GT a chance, especially after their below-par bowling and very poor fielding effort. In the run-chase, they were reduced to 79 for 3 in 10.4 overs and further complicated their task by needing 73 off the last five overs. However, Rashid and Tewatia ended things in style after Gill played a captain's knock. At the post-match presentation, Gill's epic one-liner went viral when presenter-cum-commentator Harsha Bhogle said, "Some of us thought you had left it too late."

To this, Gill was quick to respond by saying, "When Gujarat is playing, never think that again (smiles)." Here is the video -

The video of the incident shows the dramatic moment when the girl who is yet to be identified leaves her tricycle and rushes towards the house. Just moments later, the crane can be seen toppling over as the container smashes down on the house's drive.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the freak accident. However, the crane, as per Mirror UK, caved in a bedroom wall, "slicing through" the house at around 10:30 in the morning.

In a statement, the Greater Manchester Fire Rescue Service (GMFRS) said, "At around 10:30am today (Saturday, April 6), firefighters were called to reports of a crane that had fallen through the side of a residential property in Atherton, Wigan."

What caused the crane to topple?

At the time this report was published, the cause of the incident was not confirmed. However, on Saturday, parts of the UK were under a weather warning due to high winds from Storm Kathleen, which could've contributed to the accident.

Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, and enquiries are ongoing to find out how this happened. A scene is expected to remain in place until later today, and we ask members of the public to please avoid the area. We would like to thank you for your patience while we respond to this incident," said the police in a statement.

Just moments later, the crane can be seen toppling over as the container smashes down on the house's drive. Thankfully, no one was injured in the freak accident. However, the crane, as per Mirror UK, caved in a bedroom wall, "slicing through" the house at around 10:30 in the morning. In a statement, the Greater Manchester Fire Rescue Service (GMFRS) said, "At around 10:30am today (Saturday, April 6), firefighters were called to reports of a crane that had fallen through the side of a residential property in Atherton, Wigan." Following the incident, the little girl and her family have been placed into emergency accommodation. What caused the crane to topple? At the time this report was published, the cause of the incident was not confirmed. However, on Saturday, parts of the UK were under a weather warning due to high winds from Storm Kathleen, which could've contributed to the accident.
We already know Artificial Intelligence can be biased, a number of recent incidents have shown as much. But, exactly how biased can technology be?

As per a new study: Very. A study used AI to analyse social media to see whether the technology can pick up signs of depression from posts made online. The results speak volumes.

Biased AI

The analyses found that while artificial intelligence (AI) can detect signs of depression in white Americans through social media use, it may not be as effective for Black individuals.
In western Canada, an animal welfare group faces a daunting task: caring for approximately 300 cats, all seemingly healthy. The challenge arose when a man, feeling "overwhelmed," reached out for help, revealing a home overrun by cats and kittens.

How did the man collect 300 cats?

The answer to the question is Bruce Robinson who rescued them. He explained to the British Columbia SPCA that he had taken in abandoned cats during the pandemic, but after losing his job, the cost became overwhelming.

As per the Guardian, responding to his request, the BC SPCA sent staff to his home to assess the situation, revealed the animal aid organisation's Eileen Drever. There, they were met with a situation Robinson himself described as trying to count bubbles in boiling water.

"When asked how many cats he had, I think he said it was like counting bubbles in boiling water."

A big heart

Despite his struggle, Robinson had a big heart, ensuring the cats were cared for. The BC SPCA staff said that the cats were sociable and seemed to be in a good condition.

"You know, he had a huge heart, and he was caring for them," Drever told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

With one cat capable of three litters a year, their numbers quickly multiplied, and Robinson now had 298 cats, including 15 pregnant ones, at his home.

There, they were met with a situation Robinson himself described as trying to count bubbles in boiling water. "When asked how many cats he had, I think he said it was like counting bubbles in boiling water." A big heart Despite his struggle, Robinson had a big heart, ensuring the cats were cared for. The BC SPCA staff said that the cats were sociable and seemed to be in a good condition. "You know, he had a huge heart, and he was caring for them," Drever told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
