Naomi Osaka's hopes of a third US Open title were dashed in the first round itself on Tuesday as the Japanese star slumped to a straight sets loss against Danielle Collins.

Four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka, a winner at Flushing Meadows in 2018 and 2020, was beaten 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 by 19th-seeded American Collins in a battle of two big hitters. Collins, the finalist at this year's Australian Open, now advances to a second-round clash with Spain's Cristina Bucsa.

The 28-year-old right-hander from Florida will head into that assignment brimming with confidence after showing great composure to put away Osaka at Arthur Ashe Stadium. No one was more surprised at the victory than Collins, who had skipped tournaments in Silicon Valley and Toronto to allow herself time to recuperate from a neck injury.

"I'm just really still kind of speechless in a way because I took the summer off," Collins said. "To kind of come out here, play a tough opponent first round, someone that's won two Grand Slams here, it's not easy."

"Just really over the moon about being able to get through this first round because I don't think most players want to face Naomi in the first round."

Former world number one Osaka, whose ranking has fallen to 44 after an inconsistent year, made a smooth start with an early break to take a 3-0 lead. But Collins battled back into the match and took the first set after winning a hard-fought tie-break. With both players producing some booming groundstrokes, the second set was a question of who would blink first.

Collins put herself on the threshold of victory after breaking Osaka for a 5-3 lead in the eighth game. Osaka, 24, came within touching distance of securing the break of serve needed to keep the match alive after taking a 15-40 lead in the ninth game.

But Collins rallied back to deuce and then seized victory on her first match point when Osaka hit a return long. Osaka later said she had been bothered by a niggling back problem. "I tried as hard as I could. I wanted to play without my back being in pain. I only really started serving two days ago," she said.

Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu slammed Nike after suffering a wardrobe gaffe during her round 1 clash against Harmony Tan in US Open 2022 on Monday. Andreescu was left in a spot of bother after windy conditions on the court forced her to approach the chair umpire for an extra break to change her dress.

The Canadian star went on to defeat Tan 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 to progress to the second round with a comfortable victory. However, the game was marred with drama as continuous winds ket blowing Andreescu's skirt away and left her disgruntled as she asked the umpire if she can go and change.

However, before leaving the court to change her dress, Andreescu confirmed the break would not be counted as the one allotted bathroom break to each player. As she approached the umpire, she was heard blaming Nike for her 'bad dress' calling it the sponsor's fault.

Rafael Nadal will begin his quest for his 5th US Open title when he faces Australia's Ricky Hijikata in his opening round clash on Wednesday (August 31). Nadal has won the US Open in 2010, 2013, 2017, and 2019. With no Novak Djokovic -- due to his Covid-19 vaccination status -- the onus is now on Nadal to stretch his lead in terms of most Grand Slam titles in men's singles (22). He is one ahead of the Serbian and the Spaniard will look to add another title under his belt.

Nadal is a frontrunner to lift the US Open 2022 title in the men's singles. While he still has a lot to play for despite Djokovic's absence, the 36-year-old will aim to start off on a good note and not give any chances to the Australian wildcard Hijikata. Given that the US Open has already seen some upsets -- with Stefanos Tsitsipas and Iga Swaitek bowing out with their respective opening round defeats -- Nadal will aim to make a strong start on the hardcourt event.

While there are speculations regarding the forthcoming US Open 2022 edition being Serena's last Grand Slam appearance, her message was clear to the tennis world that the superstar is set to call it quits post the showpiece event, which commences on August 29.

Ahead of her last major event, Serena is sweating hard for a memorable farewell from the game that she given her a lot of recognition and applause worldwide. US Open: Big boost to Novak Djokovic's participation after USA confirms changes to COVID norms

Former world number one Serena Williams returned to the court after a year during Wimbledon 2022, where she bowed out in her opening round in the women's singles. Since then, speculations were rife that the 23-time Grand Slam winner will very soon announce her retirement from the game.

On Tuesday (August 09), Serena dropped a bomb and claimed she is set to retire, in her unique style. She said she is "evolving away from tennis" as she hinted at retiring from her beloved sport. This comes after Williams' second singles match post her return, where she beat Spain's Nuria Parrizas Diaz to reach Toronto Open's second round.

"I have never liked the word retirement," Williams wrote in an article in Vogue. "It doesn`t feel like a modern word to me. I`ve been thinking of this as a transition but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people. Maybe the best word to describe what I`m up to is evolution. I`m here to tell you that I`m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me," she said.

Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios handed wildcard for U.S. Open 2022, to tune-up in Cincinnati

Wimbledon 2022 champion Novak Djokovic has been dealt with a huge blow. The Serbian's Covid-19 vaccination is not a hidden fact anymore and his reluctance to take the jab is set to rule him out of the US Open 2022 edition, i.e. the last Grand Slam of the calendar year.

With the tournament organisers set to abide by the US government's guidelines on Covid vaccination, Djokovic's refusal to get vaccinated will eventually prevent him from entering the country for the forthcoming showpiece event. Despite this, he has been named on the entry list. If he doesn't participate in the tournament, the 35-year-old will also miss a golden opportunity to level with Rafael Nadal in terms of most Grand Slam titles in men's singles (22). After the Wimbledon win, over Nick Kyrgios, Djokovic has 21 major titles.

Just after winning Wimbledon 2022 on July 10, the Serbian superstar had pointed out, "I'm not vaccinated and I'm not planning to get vaccinated so the only good news I can have is them removing the mandated green vaccine card or whatever you call it to enter United States or exemption." He added, "I don't know. I don't think exemption is realistically possible. If that is possibility, I don't know what exemption would be about. I don't know. I don't have much answers there."

I don't have much answers there." Novak Djokovic to be ruled out of US Open as organisers to follow govt's guidelines on COVID-19 vaccine

Novak Djokovic defeated Nick Kyrgios in the men's singles final on Sunday to clinch his fourth straight Wimbledon title. The Serbian ace extended his dominance at the All England Club with his seventh Wimbledon singles title equalling American great Pete Sampras' record. He is now just one short of equalling the legendary Roger Federer's record of most Wimbledon triumphs (8).

The Wimbledon 2022 title is Djokovic's first Grand Slam of the year as he has now closed the gap on Rafael Nadal on the list of most Grand Slam singles titles won by male players. He is now just one short of matching Nadal's feat of 22 Grand Slams but his participation at the upcoming US Open 2022 remains in doubt.

Djokovic, who has maintained a strict stance against getting COVID-19 vaccine, has reasserted that he will not get vaccinated anytime soon. The Serbian ace, who is regarded as one of the best players in the world, said he is not vaccinated and doesn't plan to take the vaccine but would love to take part in the US Open this year.

"I'll wait hopefully for some good news from USA because I would really love to go there. If that doesn't happen, then I have to see what the schedule will look like," he added.

Novak Djokovic on his US Open participation: 'Not planning to get vaccinated but would love to go there'

Novak Djokovic repeated his hardline refusal to get a Covid-19 vaccination Saturday as he resigned himself to sitting out the season's last Grand Slam at the US Open. Djokovic was deported from Melbourne in January over his single-minded but controversial stance, forcing him to abandon an assault on a 10th Australian Open title.

With no sign of the US authorities relaxing their rule requiring all visitors to be vaccinated, the 35-year-old Djokovic admitted Saturday that Wimbledon, which starts Monday, will be his last Slam of 2022. When asked if he had completely closed his mind to getting vaccinated, he was unequivocal. "Yes," he said.
