According to Axios, the Biden administration may announce sanctions against the IDF's Netzah Yehuda battalion for alleged human rights violations against Palestinians in the West Bank for the first time. The IDF's Netzah Yehuda group has previously been at the heart of various controversies involving right-wing extremism and violence against Palestinians. The battalion was relocated out of the West Bank in December 2022, however, Israel denied this was due to their conduct, and it has since operated mostly in the country's north. It has been deployed to the Gaza Strip as part of the ongoing conflict against Hamas. According to sources, sanctions would prohibit the supply of US weaponry to the primarily ultra-Orthodox infantry unit, as well as block its men from training with US forces or participating in any activity funded by the US under the Leahy Laws. A major protest group Kaplan Force said, “We will not allow Netanyahu to turn Israel into a dangerous messianic dictatorship, taking us to a constitutional crisis.” 
 
“The protests will be amplified over the coming weeks until the Knesset’s return from holidays,” it added.

<h2>Pro-Netanyahu protests also take place</h2>

Times of Israel in one of its reports said that some conservative groups also appeared in New York to show their support for the Netanyahu administration.

They chanted “64 mandates,” referring to the coalition’s majority in the 120-seat Knesset, and “their money will not help you.”

Netanyahu and his supporters believe the protests against the government are fueled by overseas funding but have failed to provide any evidence.&nbsp;

“We very much support democracy and the Israelis elected democratically Bibi Netanyahu, so sorry that these people are upset that they lost but a democracy is a democracy,” Netanyahu supporter Hillary Barr was quoted as saying by Times of Israel.

During the trip to the US, Netanyahu on Wednesday also had a meeting with US President Joe Biden where the US leader raised “hard issues,” including protecting the “checks and balances” in a democracy.

Heavy protests erupt in Israel and US against Netanyahu’s judicial overhaul

US President Joe Biden had formally extended an invitation to Israel's President Isaac Herzog to visit the White House. The invite came even as Washington's ties with the government in Israel remained icy. Israel's president is now in Washington. He is also expected to address a joint session on the US Congress in honour of Israel's 75th anniversary.

It comes with the United States and Israel in the process of negotiating a new 10-year defence aid pact to replace the current one&nbsp;which expires in 2018 and grants the Jewish state more than $3 billion per year. 
 
Lieberman leaves on Saturday and is set to meet US defence secretary Ashton Carton on Monday. 
 
He will also attend a ceremony in Dallas next Wednesday marking the development of US defence firm Lockheed Martin`s F-35 fighter jet&nbsp;which Israel is purchasing&nbsp;and tour a factory of Israeli weapons manufacturer Elbit Systems. 
 
Following Lieberman`s nomination, US state department spokesman Mark Toner, in a rare comment on Israeli internal politics, said the Jewish state`s new ruling coalition raised &quot;legitimate questions&quot; over Israel`s commitment to a two-state solution in its conflict with the Palestinians. 
 
Lieberman`s appointment tilted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu`s cabinet, already seen as among the most right wing in Israeli history, even further to the right. 
 
He has in the past spoken of harsh measures against Palestinian &quot;terrorists&quot;. 
 
Both Netanyahu and Lieberman have however sought to allay concerns over the appointment, saying they are committed to peace and the two-state solution. 
 
Netanyahu himself has also had a&nbsp;rocky relationship with US President Barack Obama`s administration, but the two leaders have sought to move past their disagreements in recent months and negotiate the new defence deal.
