A former employee of tech giant Meta Platforms Inc on Tuesday (November 7) testified before a United States Senate subcommittee and alleged that although the parent company of Instagram and Facebook knew about harassment of teenage users on the platforms, it did not do enough to address the issue.

Arturo Bejar, the former Meta employee, worked as director of engineering for Facebook's Protect and Care team (2009-2015) before working on well-being for Instagram (2019-2021). His testimony took place at a hearing about social media and its impact on teen mental health.

"It's time that the public and parents understand the true level of harm posed by these 'products' and it's time that young users have the tools to report and suppress online abuse," he said in written remarks prior to the hearing, as reported by Reuters.

Meta didn't do enough to protect teens, former employee tells US Senate

Representative Mike Johnson, a Republican from the US state of Louisiana secured the gavel and became the new Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, on Wednesday (Oct 25), ending weeks of chaos in Congress and GOP infighting.

US House finally has a speaker

Johnson has managed to secure the gavel with 220 votes nearly three weeks after Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster.

Notably, the 51-year-old representative from Louisiana who is also the vice chairman of the House Republican Conference was the party’s fourth nominee for the post of speaker.

Meanwhile, 209 votes were in favour of the top Democrat in the chamber, Hakeem Jeffries.

“We will restore trust in this body. We will advance a comprehensive conservative policy agenda, combat the harmful policies of the Biden Administration, and support our allies abroad,” said Johnson shortly after the vote.

In his first act as the speaker, Johnson said he would introduce a resolution supporting Israel in its conflict with Hamas militants.

"The first bill that I'm going to bring to this floor in just a little while will be in support of our dear, dear friend Israel, and we're overdue in getting that done," said the Louisiana congressman, during his acceptance speech.

The Louisiana lawyer backed by former US President Donald Trump was first elected in 2016 and is said to be the least experienced House speaker in decades.

Johnson is best known as the author of the unsuccessful Republican bid to get the Supreme Court to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election where Trump lost.

Republican Mike Johnson becomes Speaker of the US House of Representatives

Representative from the US state of Minnesota and Republican Tom Emmer has abandoned his bid to become the next speaker of the United States House of Representatives hours after he had garnered enough votes to become the latest GOP nominee for the job, on Tuesday (Oct 24), according to American media reports.

Emmer was the party’s third candidate in the last few weeks after the previous two candidates failed to garner enough support in the Congress. He abandoned his bid after it reportedly became clear that he would not get 217 votes on the House floor to become the next speaker.

Why did he quit?

A report by the Associated Press citing Republican sources familiar with the situation said that the House GOP whip, Emmer reversed course after former US President Donald Trump objected to his nomination and hardliners in the House denied the party leader the votes he would need for the gavel.

The House majority Whip had narrowly won an internal Republican ballot to replace ousted speaker Kevin McCarthy. According to US media reports, only 117 of Emmer’s colleagues voted for him in the final round of voting.

McCarthy’s historic ouster and with Emmer recently abandoning his bid to run for speaker, the House has once again been plunged into chaos, not to mention the GOP infighting that has paralysed Congress for over three weeks now.

“The dysfunction in the Republican Party right now seems to be saying we want to lose,” Kentucky Republican Andy Barr told CNN. He added, “That is crazy to me. We were elected as a majority to govern, and we are not doing that right now.”

Emmer, who is said to be a more moderate Republican representative, was also among those who voted to certify Democratic President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory over Trump following the January 6 attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters.

What have the Democrats said?

“Extreme MAGA Republicans have broken the Congress,” said top House Democrat Hakeem Jeffries, on social media referring to the former president’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. “The American people are paying the price. We must pursue a bipartisan path forward and reopen the House.”

Republicans hold a narrow 221-212 majority in the House which means that a candidate can afford to lose just four votes if Democrats remain united in opposition, which they have been during previous rounds of voting.

However, Dems have said that they are open to a compromise candidate if it allows the chamber to function.

What now?

The Republicans have now regrouped and said that they plan on holding an evening forum to hear from more hopefuls.

Representative Kevin Hern is one of about six representatives who have expressed interest again after he dropped his bid late Tuesday to back Mike Johnson, both of whom lost to Emmer in the closed-door party vote.

Representatives Byron Donalds, Chuck Fleischmann, Mark Green and Roger Williams have also put their names forward.

“We’ve got to go back and get another slate of nominees and let them work through the process and see who our next nominee will be, just like we did last night and today,” said Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer.

Tom Emmer drops out of US House speaker race hours after becoming latest Republican nominee

Republican Steve Scalise said late on Thursday (Oct 12) that he was dropping out of the race to be speaker of the US House of Representatives.

Scalise informed his GOP colleagues during a private evening meeting of his decision, refraining from endorsing anyone, including his main rival, Rep. Jim Jordan, the far-right Judiciary Committee chairman favoured by former US president Donald Trump, who had already withdrawn from seeking the position.

The future steps remain uncertain, as the House is essentially closed while the Republican majority seeks to elect a new speaker after ousting Kevin McCarthy from the role in an unprecedented vote orchestrated by party hardliners.

When asked about supporting Jordan, Scalise told journalists the need for selfless individuals, stating, "It's got to be people that aren't doing it for themselves and their own personal interest."

Scalise had been striving to gain the support of over 100 representatives, mainly from those backing Jordan. However, many hardliners aligned with Trump were determined to prolong the fight to replace McCarthy after his historic removal from the position.

The hold-outs argued that Scalise as majority leader was not a better choice, should focus on his health amid his battle with cancer, and did not align with their vision of leadership.

The House adjourned late in the night, with plans to reconvene early on Friday (Oct 13).

Meanwhile, Kevin McCarthy, the first speaker to be ousted in a vote, said that Scalise would continue as majority leader.

While McCarthy had briefly considered a comeback bid, it seemed unlikely, Associated Press reported.

"I just think the conference as a whole has to address their issues, find a solution, and select a new leader," he concluded.

Steve Scalise of Republican Party drops out of US House speaker race

US President Joe Biden is considering largest ever funding package for Ukraine that will fund the war till the next presidential election, reported The Telegraph. The bill, termed 'one-and-done' is being sought in an effort to overcome impasse with the Republicans. After Russia invaded Ukraine last year, US-led Western alliance has poured in billions of dollars in humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine. However, there are voices within the US political circles that are skeptical about having to fund Ukraine 'continuously' and without an end.

The concern, if it becomes widespread in American public, is perceived to potentially damage Biden's chances in next year's presidential election.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) have expressed concern that US support may dry up entirely. This will create a shortfall of USD 2.7 per month and may require European Union (EU) nations to do the heavy lifting, a considerable endeavour if US stops helping altogether.

Experts quoted in media reports say that if Biden is able to clinch funding of USD 100 billion from Congress, it may be enough for the war until after next November's election. Former US president Donald Trump, the current frontrunner to win the Republican Party nomination for 2024 elections, has repeatedly attacked Biden over Ukraine war. He has argued that the money would be better spent on domestic issues.

Polls reflect this thinking. An Reuters/Ipsos poll cited by The Telegraph said that in last five months, there has been a decrease of 5 per cent among respondents who say that US should continue sending weapons to Ukraine..

The White House is “not making any decisions about whether to do one big package or about how much it would be” until after the Speaker’s election to replace Mr McCarthy, a source told the news outlet. However, the official reportedly said that the 'one-and-done' package is "one option" that is under consideration.

Passage of such a package will not be easy. It is bound to be opposed by at least some Republicans. The politicking may make Biden give some concessions on border control and even other Republican demands.

Since the Ukraine war began, US Congress has greenlit four packages of cumulative total of USD 113 billion.

It is believed that Ukrainian forces would struggle against Russia if US support dries out, especially in southeast and north of the country.

The Telegraph reported citing an unnamed administration official that President Biden is planning a "major" speech on Ukraine that “tries to unify America behind why it’s so important to support Ukraine and just how much is at stake,”

“He will directly address and rebut the criticisms of Ukraine funding,” said the official.

Henry Cuellar, a member of the US House of Representatives on Monday, became the victim of a carjacking. The incident took place right outside his Washington residence.

Carjacked

The democrat, as per a BBC report, was parking his vehicle about a mile or 1.5 kilometre away from the US Capitol, when three armed men stole his car.

Confirming the theft, Cuellar's Chief of Staff, Jacob Hochberg told AFP that "Three armed assailants approached the Congressman and stole his vehicle" as he was parking. The incident happened around 1:30 GMT (21:30 local time) in Washington's Navy Yard neighbourhood.

Along with his car, the 68-year-old was robbed of his phone and iPad. The police later recovered the politician's car. However, it is not known if the other valuables were tracked down.

"Luckily, he was not harmed and is working with local law enforcement," said Hochberg, thanking police for their "swift action and for recovering the congressman's vehicle."

Crime rise in Washington

Recently, the United States capital has seen a steep rise in the number of carjacking cases. As per the city's police department, so far this year, 750 offences have been reported. BBC reports that 75 per cent of these offences involved guns.

This, as per news agency AFP, is almost double the number of car-jackings recorded during the same period last year in the national capital Washington.

Recently, another member of the US Congress, Representative Angie Craig of Minnesota, also became the victim of a crime. Craig was attacked in the elevator of her Washington apartment back in February this year. At the time, her office said that the attack was not believed to have any political motivations.

The Minnesota representative escaped the incident relatively unharmed. Her assailant, who was later identified as Kendrid Hamlin, as per CNN, suffers from "mental illness and homelessness". Hamlin punched Craig in her neck and grabbed her by the collarbone. The Congresswoman escaped by throwing hot coffee at her attacker.

Henry Cuellar, a member of the US House of Representatives on Monday, became the victim of a carjacking. The incident took place right outside his Washington residence. Carjacked The democrat, as per a BBC report, was parking his vehicle about a mile or 1.5 kilometre away from the US Capitol, when three armed men stole his car. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to make an appearance at the White House and Capitol Hill next week during his visit to the US during the United Nations General Assembly, reported American media citing sources, on Friday (September 15). This comes as the United States Congress is in the midst of debating President Joe Biden’s request to provide $24 billion in military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

According to reports, the Ukrainian president is also slated to deliver a speech to the assembly at the UN headquarters in New York.

The media report citing two anonymous congressional aides said that the Ukrainian president will also visit Capitol Hill to lobby for more US aid to fight the war against Russia.

Both Biden and Zelensky are also due to attend the meeting of the UNGA next week where the Ukrainian president is also planning to hold meetings with other visiting world leaders, reported CBS News.

However, the request comes amid signs of softening support for Ukraine among Americans and Congress becoming increasingly divided over providing additional funding for Ukraine as the war is well into its second year.

Ukraine’s Zelensky to meet Prez Biden as US Congress debates $24 billion aid for Kyiv: Reports

US Congress has cleared a much anticipated India-US fighter engine deal with no objection. The Congress nod now paves the way for the implementation of the deal between the US-based General Electric (GE) and India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Historic deal to jointly make jet engines for Indian Air Force cleared by US Congress

In a major breakthrough in India-US defence relations, the Congress in Washington on Wednesday (August 30) cleared GE Aerospace's agreement with state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to produce fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force.

It was during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official state visit to the US that GE Aerospace and HAL signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to produce the jets.

“It is all clear from the legislative end. The sale was approved before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit itself. But, as per the process, the State Department notified the House and Senate Foreign Relations Committee on July 28. There has been no objection. The administration can go ahead with the next steps," an official familiar with developments on Capitol Hill was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

US-based GE Aerospace is regarded as the world's leading provider of jet engines, components and systems for commercial and military aircraft. The deal becomes all the more significant because the US never shares similar tech, even with its closest allies. The fact that Washington is willing to share such information with New Delhi suggests that it has high hopes from India in the region.

The approval by Congress paves the way for the implementation of the agreement with HAL, which includes unprecedented technology transfer, manufacturing of jet engines in India and licensing arrangements.

Additionally, the deal includes the co-production of 99 jet engines, which will be less costly due to the technology transfer.

According to reports, during US President Joe Biden's visit to New Delhi to attend the G20 leaders summit, both countries are expected to flesh out more details to take the deal forward.

Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna has said that China needs to respect India’s borders and that he will work towards New Delhi getting critical US technologies like some other key allies including Israel, Japan and South Korea.

Ro Khanna, co-chair of the Congressional India Caucus who is leading a bipartisan Congressional delegation here, hoped that India can play a role in effecting peace between Russia and Ukraine.

Diwali, celebrated by millions of Americans from various faiths and religions including Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains, should be declared a federal holiday, Congresswoman Grace Meng has said.

Meng, a lawyer-turned-politician, who represents the sixth Congressional District of New York, has introduced the Diwali Day Act in the US House of Representatives, for making Diwali a federal holiday in the country.

“It’s not just about a day off. It is about making sure that people beyond those who celebrate Diwali, truly understand the holiday and the culture and the contributions of the so many people who celebrate Diwali,” Meng told PTI in an interview on Thursday.

As a kid growing up in Queens, New York City, Meng said she always wanted to make sure that US holidays match those of the communities.

“It is important to me as an Asian American that Diwali, which is a holiday that is celebrated by hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and billions of people literally around the world, that we are able to have this day off,” the 47-year-old Democrat said.

The legislation introduced in May has gained positive traction from her Congressional colleagues.

“We haven’t really heard anything negative. So, in the world of politics and Congress, that is a very positive sign. This piece of legislation is a bipartisan piece of legislation,” she said.

“We have members signing on every week, and so we are excited to keep talking about it and hopefully be able to pass it. We are very heartened by the steps taken by New York State, for example, in making Diwali a New York City school holiday, which is long overdue. We’ve been fighting for about 10 years or over 10 years on that legislation. And so we think that that also provides some momentum for our federal legislation,” Meng said.

Indian Americans, she said, have contributed so much to New York City, New York State, and the US.

Indian Americans comprise one of the largest Asian American populations in this country, and they have provided so many benefits to the US.

“They have contributed so much to our culture to academia, to our economy. And so we want to make sure that we recognise the important contributions and holidays that Indian Americans celebrate,” the Congresswoman said.

Responding to a question on the recent visit of the Prime Minister and his address to the joint session of the Congress, Meng said the speech was well received.

“His presence was received by both sides of the aisle, very bipartisan. We know that there are Indian Americans in both Republican and Democratic districts throughout New York and across the country. Many of our constituents back at home in New York were excited to see him come to Congress and we were able to hear him speak about the strong alliance between India and the United States,” she said.

“It is a long-time relationship. As we hear about certain spots around the world, we know that it is very important for both countries and for democracy to continue to strengthen the alliance between the two countries,” the Congresswoman said.

“Both sides are finding more ways to collaborate and new areas of partnership,” she added.

On Wednesday night (July 26), three former US military officials said they believe the government knows much more about UFOs, officially known as unidentified aerial phenomena or UAPs, and aliens than it was letting on during a remarkable Congressional hearing.

On Wednesday night (July 26), three former US military officials said they believe the government knows much more about UFOs, officially known as unidentified aerial phenomena or UAPs, and aliens than it was letting on during a remarkable Congressional hearing. The otherwise divided Congress looked seemingly in unison over the potential discovery of alien life, UFOs and everything in between. Our universe is ever-expanding and houses trillions of galaxies, stars and planets which makes one believe that we, humans, might not be alone on this pale blue dot that we often refer to as Earth. Renowned astrophysicist and TV personality Carl Sagan once famously said that the universe is a "pretty big place" and it would seem like an "awful waste of space if it was only us in it". Naturally, a significant portion of the planet believes that we may have been contacted by extraterrestrial beings because it certainly appears mathematically probable. Now, some chilling, otherworldly revelations have been made during the House Oversight subcommittee hearing on UFOs that solidify this theory. US government knows the truth? David Grusch, a former US intelligence official, has become an overnight internet sensation after he claimed in his testimony that there was absolute certainty that the federal government remains in possession of UAPs. Grusch cited interviews he had conducted with over 40 witnesses over a four-year long period as the basis of his claims. Under oath, Grusch disclosed that he had been informed of a long-standing UAP crash retrieval and reverse-engineering programme during his official duties, from which he was denied access Asked by one of the committee members, how such a programme was funded, Grusch claimed that the effort is "above congressional oversight" and bankrolled by a "misappropriation of funds." Grusch said he had "specific knowledge" of money going into the alien exploration programme when it was meant for another scheme. However, he could not give the specifics due to the information being classified. When asked if there were bodies of pilots piloting these craft, he confirmed the existence of "biologics" that were non-human, based on information from individuals with direct knowledge of the programme. To which Grusch replied: "Yes." “I directed people with that knowledge to the appropriate authorities," he added on being quizzed if he heard of anyone being murdered. Besides, other witnesses, David Fravor, a former Navy commander, and Ryan Graves, a retired Navy pilot, also made similar claims. Fravor recalled seeing a strange object in the sky while on a training mission in 2004, while Graves, who has founded Americans for Safe Aerospace, a UAP non-profit, said he saw UAP off the Atlantic coast “every day for at least a couple years”. Also watch | UAPs are 'in our airspace': Witnesses testify at UFO Congressional hearing in US Other incidents of ‘alien invasion’ The hearing on Wednesday was not the first time that evidence has pointed towards the existence of non-human life. In May 2022, Ronald Moultrie and Scott Bray, two top officials of the Pentagon appeared before the subcommittee and showed the declassified UFO videos. They said that reports of UFOs are 'frequent' and have been on the rise for more than a decade. They also added that US officials were unable to explain some of these sightings. ALSO READ | US Navy says it has several UFO videos, won't release them due to 'national security' The US Navy, however, responding to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request last year, announced that it will not be releasing any more unseen UFP videos in the public domain as it will harm national security. “The release of this information will harm national security as it may provide adversaries valuable information regarding Department of Defense/Navy operations, vulnerabilities, and/or capabilities. No portions of the videos can be segregated for release,” said Gregory Cason, deputy director of the Navy's FOIA office. So what do we know? Despite the US government's unwillingness, a pandora's box of questions, assertions and conspiracies has opened up after the meeting. While UAPs are certainly a yardstick to gauge if alien life exists out there, space agencies such as NASA are on the lookout for exoplanets to find other life forms. Currently, there are around 4,000 exoplanets in our galaxy alone which makes the quest all the more exciting. Since our solar system (4.5 billion years) is relatively new compared to the universe's age (13.8 billion), physicist Enrico Fermi had in 1950 posited that given enough time, alien civilisations should have been able to cross our neighbourhood. It is a paradox that takes into equation that we haven't been visited by these aliens. However, if the 'guests' have paid a visit and the US government has remained secretive all this time, it changes our understanding of the universe. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) told a senior agent to "decline to respond" to questions about the Hunter Biden investigation posed by the US Congress' House Oversight Committee, reported The New York Post. In his letter to the agent, FBI's general counsel Jason Jones described the Hunter Biden case as "ongoing". The letter was reportedly sent on Sunday. The New York Post reported, citing sources, that the FBI knew that a deposition was scheduled on Monday.

“[T]he Department expects that you will decline to respond to questions seeking non-public information likely covered by one or more components of executive privilege or other significant confidentiality interests, in particular information about deliberations or ongoing investigative activity in law enforcement matters,” Jones wrote as quoted by The New York Post.

“You should instead refer such questions to the FBI’s Office of Congressional Affairs,” the FBI lawyer added

“Consistent with longstanding practice, this will afford the Department the full opportunity to consider particular questions and possible accommodations that may fulfil the Committee’s legitimate need for information while protecting Executive Branch confidentiality interests.”

PM Modi lauds VP Kamala Harris, talks about 'Samosa Caucus' flavour of US Congress

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi lightened the atmosphere during his address to a joint sitting of the US Congress on Thursday by playfully invoking the deeply divided state of the House. Experts have compared the current level of division to that seen during the Civil War. Upon entering the chamber at the US Capitol, Modi received a warm welcome with a standing ovation and chants of "Modi, Modi" from Indian-American members of Congress.

After exchanging greetings with Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Vice President Kamala Harris, who occupied their customary seats on a raised platform behind the speaker's podium, Modi highlighted the "beauty of democracy." He expressed his delight at witnessing the celebration of the bond between India and the United States and continued to engage the audience with his wit.

In reference to the political divide in Congress, which is primarily along party lines, Modi amusingly admitted the challenges faced by Speaker McCarthy, evoking laughter in the chamber. Modi said, “Mr Speaker, I can admit you have a tough job." He then concluded with a punchline, “I am always happy to help out whenever the US Congress needs a strong bipartisan consensus.”

The remark was well-received, prompting good-natured laughter from the members of Congress.

However, Modi concluded this portion of his speech on a serious note, emphasising the significant burden and responsibility that comes with living in a democracy. He acknowledged the inevitability of differences in ideologies, politics, and parties but stressed the importance of presenting a unified front to the world.

"There must be a contest of ideas at home, but we must also come together as one when we speak for our nation," Modi told the US Congress.

The divisions within the US Congress were particularly evident earlier this month when the nation faced a looming debt crisis. However, in early June, the House managed to avert a default crisis by approving a debt ceiling and budget cuts package. President Biden and Speaker McCarthy worked together, rallying a bipartisan coalition of centrist Democrats and Republicans to counter opposition from both conservative and progressive factions.

‘I’m happy to help,’ PM Modi’s quip on divided House in his US Congress address evokes laughter

US senators on Thursday introduced two separate bipartisan artificial intelligence bills on Thursday amid growing interest in addressing issues surrounding the technology.

One would require the US government to be transparent when using AI to interact with people, and another would establish an office to determine if the United States is remaining competitive in the latest technologies.

Lawmakers are beginning to consider what new rules might be needed because of the rise of AI. The technology made headlines earlier this year when ChatGPT, an AI programme that can answer questions in written form, became generally available.

Senators Gary Peters, a Democrat who chairs the Homeland Security Committee, introduced a bill along with Senators Mike Braun and James Lankford, both Republicans, which would require U.S. government agencies to tell people when they are using AI to interact with them.

The bill also requires agencies to create a way for people to appeal any decisions made by AI.

"The federal government needs to be proactive and transparent with AI utilization and ensure that decisions aren't being made without humans in the driver's seat," said Braun in a statement.

Senators Michael Bennet and Mark Warner, both Democrats, introduced a measure along with Republican Senator Todd Young that would establish an Office of Global Competition Analysis that would seek to ensure that the United States stayed in the front of the pack in developing artificial intelligence.

Indian PM Narendra Modi to address joint session of US Congress during state visit

At least nine members of the US Congress sold banking stocks before and during the banking turmoil in March, sparking suspicions of possible insider trading, The Financial Times has reported.

According to Quiver Quantitative's analysis of public declarations of stock sales, Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat from New Jersey and member of the financial services committee, disclosed selling his shares in Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) on March 9. This transaction was valued between $1,000 and $15,000 and took place a day before the bank collapsed, sending U.S. banking stocks plummeting.

Gottheimer, the Financial Times noted, reportedly sold his shares in Charles Schwab Corp. on March 6 and March 14 for a similar amount. Gottheimer also sold his shares in Seacoast Banking, a troubled Florida bank, on March 29. The share price of Seacoast Banking has fallen by 10 percent since the transaction.

According to Quiver Quantitative's analysis, the New Jersey Democrat was one of the most active stock dealers in the House of Representatives in 2022, with over 380 transactions. The Congressman's representatives, however, stated that his financial decisions were made at the discretion of a third-party financial consultant.

Gottheimer was just one of the several Congress lawmakers who sold their banking stocks last month when the industry was in upheaval.

Daniel Goldman, a House Democrat representing a New York district, sold a Schwab position worth between $15,000 and $50,000 on March 6. On March 15, he sold his shares in San Francisco-based First Republic Bank. Since then, First Republic shares have dropped by more than half.

Conflict of interest?

The allegations of stock sales by US lawmakers have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, as lawmakers may access non-public information that could impact stock prices. Insider trading, which involves using non-public information to gain an unfair advantage in stock trading, is illegal and unethical.

Public advocacy groups worry that enabling government officials to own or trade stocks could create a conflict of interest with their official obligations, even if they are legally compelled to declare them.

"It exemplifies why public trust in the elected officials is so low," Danielle Caputo, legal counsel for ethics at the Campaign Legal Centre, a campaign watchdog organisation, told Financial Times.

At least 9 US lawmakers sold banking stocks prior to market turmoil: Report

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been asked to address a joint session of Congress on his visit to Washington later this month.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and other officials announced Thursday that Republic of Korea President Yoon Suk Yeol has been invited to address a joint meeting of Congress in honour of the 70th anniversary of the US-ROK connection. The meeting is scheduled for April 27, as reported by the Associated Press.

“With this year marking the 70th anniversary of the alliance between our two countries, it is an especially important time to reflect on the achievements of our partnership and to reaffirm our shared commitment to democracy, economic prosperity, and global peace,” the leaders wrote.

They stated that the US-Korea relationship is "of great importance and significance," and that the meeting "would provide an ideal platform for you to share your vision for the future of the US-Korea alliance."

President Joe Biden will host Yoon at a state dinner on April 26, his second as president.

The invitation to address Congress comes as the US strengthens its connections with Asia and sharpens its focus on China. This week, McCarthy risked infuriating China by having a bipartisan meeting with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in a diplomatic show of US support for the island government, which Beijing claims as territory.

South Korea and the US have recently intensified collaborative security measures as concerns about China's intentions in the region increase. The country is also concerned about US restrictions affecting the tech industry and trade with China.

Congress often invites heads of state to deliver speeches during joint sessions, providing a high-profile chance to highlight ties between the United States and other countries.

The congressional minority leaders, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, signed the letter.

US invites South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol to address Congress

In his first-ever appearance before the US Congress, TikTok’s CEO Shou Zi Chew was grilled for almost five hours.

The hearing, which took place on Thursday in front of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, saw the combative US lawmakers raising concerns over the app’s alleged ties with the Chinese government and privacy practices.

“Let me state this unequivocally: ByteDance is not an agent of China or any other country,” he said as he began his testimony.

Defending TikTok’s privacy practices, Chew said, “There are more than 150 million Americans who love our platform, and we know we have a responsibility to protect them.”

Here are the key takeaways from the hearing:

China’s shadow over TikTok

In a rare bipartisan call, many of the lawmakers—Democrats and Republicans—called for a complete ban on the video-sharing app, claiming that it has links with the Chinese government.

The committee members sought to know how frequently Chew was in contact with them, and questioned whether the company’s proposed solution, called Project Texas, would offer sufficient protection against the Chinese laws under which companies operating in the mainland are obligated to make user data accessible to the government.

A Democrat from California, Tony Cárdenas, asked Chew if TikTok is a Chinese company.

Chew responded that TikTok is global in nature, and headquartered in Singapore and Los Angeles, and not available in mainland China.

The CEO rubbished claims that TikTok poses national security threat in the US, saying that a lot of the risks pointed out were “hypothetical and theoretical”.

He said that under the company’s US$1.5 billion Project Texas plan, the handling of US data will be stored into a separate division of the company, co-controlled with Austin-based company, Oracle.

“American data is stored on American soil by an American company, overseen by American personnel,” he said.

“So the risk would be similar to any government going to an American company, asking for data,” he added.

TikTok and data collection

The congressmen also question about TikTok’s data collection practices.

Chew responded by emphasising that the data TikTok collects is the data “that’s frequently collected by many other companies in our industry.”

“We are committed to be very transparent with our users about what we collect,” Chew said. “I don’t believe what we collect is more than most players in the industry.”

He was then asked if the app collects data on health and GPS. He told the committee that it doesn’t.

The CEO also said that American tech firms “don’t have a good track record” when it comes to data privacy, singling out Facebook over the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Youth safety and mental health

One of the important topics that came up for discussion was what kind of impact the app has on children.

The lawmakers raised concerns over reports that the app promotes harmful content and wanted to know whether TikTok was taking any measures to moderate t.

“Your technology is leading to death,” Republican Representative Gus Bilirakis said.

Chew said that as a father of two, the issues around youth safety were “personal for me”.

He asserted that the app provides users with “age-appropriate settings and controls”, and that it offers a “separate experience” in the US for children under 13.

The 40-yeear-old said that that videos are first vetted by a third-party expert Common Sense Network, and then made accessible to children to give them a “curated viewing experience”.

Those under 13 also cannot post videos, comment or message others, he said.

United States Representative Lauren Boebert expressing her gratitude revealed that her eldest son is expecting a baby boy with his girlfriend this year in April. The 36-year-old US lawmaker shared the news publicly during a 'Moms for America' event on Tuesday. Boebert said she and her husband, "are so excited to welcome this new life into our family." As per her Twitter account, Tyler, the oldest of her four boys, turned 17 on March 21, 2022.

Her early life

Lauren herself was a teen mom. During the event, she said, "I was a brand-new mom, I had to make hard decisions on successfully raising my child, or getting to high school biology class. And I chose to take care of my child."

After dropping out of high school, she took a job as an assistant manager at McDonald's in Rifle.

She then got married to Jayson Boebert in 2007 and started working for job filing for a natural gas drilling company and then became a pipeliner, a team member that builds and maintains pipelines and pumping stations.

Later in 2020, she earned a GED certificate, a month before her first selection primary.

'The MOM Talk'

Boebert told the audience of the event that she had a conversation with her son when she learned about the pregnancy.

She said that the rural conservative communities are special because their teenage girls who become pregnant tend to "value life" and the preciousness of life that is about to be born.

A backlash for Lauren

This big announcement comes days after the woman leader received criticism for speaking against funding "comprehensive sex education " in public schools during a Conservative Political Action Conference event.

According to the interview clip posted on Twitter, she spoke on her belief that schools shouldn't teach students how to have or enjoy intercourse, regardless of their relationship. However, she did not mention if she thinks "prevention or abstinence" should be taught to students or not.
