A Florida woman is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday (Dec. 2), after she was found guilty of second-degree murder for zipping her boyfriend in a suitcase and leaving him inside for hours until he died.&nbsp;

47-year-old Sarah Boone, who was found guilty in October, now faces up to life in prison. Her prosecutors said that she zipped her boyfriend Jorge Torres, Jr., into a suitcase and recorded a video of herself taunting him before leaving him stuck inside the suitcase overnight to die.&nbsp;

State Attorney Andrew Bain issued a news release, stating that the couple was drinking alcohol and playing a game of hide-and-seek in February 2020.&nbsp;

They then thought "it would be funny" to get in a suitcase as part of the game, according to an arrest affidavit from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

Boone said that Torres voluntarily hopped into the suitcase, and she zipped it, the news release read. She then recorded herself "taunting" her boyfriend as he asked her to let him out. However, she then went upstairs to sleep, the release added.&nbsp;

Boone thought that since two of his fingers stuck out from the suitcase, he would be able to open it, according to the affidavit.&nbsp;

When Boone woke up in the morning, she found Torres unresponsive in the suitcase and called 911, a release from Bain's office stated.&nbsp;

Videos found on Boone’s phone that included Torres “frantically pleading to be released while Boone laughed and rebuffed him several times” were presented at trial, it added.&nbsp;

“In the videos she recorded, the victim could be heard telling the defendant he could not breathe and asking to be let out of the suitcase,” the release read. “Boone responded with, ‘That’s what you get,’ ‘That’s what I feel like when you cheat on me’ and other taunts.”

According to the release, her boyfriend was seen saying, "I can't f*****g breathe, seriously." He was also pushing in the suitcase and trying to get out, the video showed, as per the affidavit.&nbsp;

Boone testified in her own defence for around five hours, according to CNN affiliate WESH. Her defence team argued that she suffered from "battered spouse syndrome" and was afraid of Torres, WESH reported.&nbsp;

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has instructed police to ban mosques from broadcasting the Adhan, or Islamic call to prayer over loudspeakers, confirmed a Channel 12 report.&nbsp;

He further directed the police to confiscate the loudspeaker equipment found to be used in the mosques, according to the report.&nbsp;

The mosques found to be using the loudspeakers to call for prayer would also be fined.&nbsp;

Ben Gvir in a post on X, said that he is "proud" to introduce the policy, which according to him, will put an end to the "unreasonable noise from mosques, which has&nbsp;become a hazard for the residents of Israel.”

“In our debates, it arose that most Western countries, and even some Arab countries, limit the noise and have many laws on the matter. It’s only neglected in Israel,” Ben Gvir’s office said in a statement.

Moreover, the leader of the United Arab List condemned the decision and accused Ben Gvir of fuelling divisions and targeting mosques after failing to provoke violence at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque.&nbsp;

Israel bans mosques from using loudspeakers to broadcast call to prayer, opposition slams decision

The missing US-Israeli soldier Omer Maxim Neutra was killed in the Hamas's attack on southern Israel on October 7 last year, and his body is being held hostage in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed on Monday.&nbsp;

The 21-year-old lone soldier from New York served as a tank platoon commander in the 7th Armored Brigade's 77th Battalion.&nbsp;

He was called a "lone soldier" because his parents were not in Israel.&nbsp;

Until the IDF confirmed his killing, it was believed that Neutra was alive and being held hostage by Hamas.&nbsp;

On the day of the attack last year, October 7, he was stationed in a tank on the Gaza border near the southern community of Nahal Oz.&nbsp;

During the attack, their tank was attacked by the Hamas group with RPG fire and explosive devices. Then, the four people, including Neutra, Sgt. Shaked Dahan, the driver, Sgt. Nimrod Cohen, the gunner, and Sgt. Oz Daniel, the loader, were abducted to Gaza.&nbsp;

Dahan's death was confirmed in November, while Daniel's death was confirmed in February.

Now, after 14 months of the deadly attack, Neutra's death has been confirmed by the Israeli military.&nbsp;

However, nothing has been confirmed about Cohen. His father on Monday told Ynet news, "We have received indications that Nimrod is alive. I am sure my son is alive, and I am fighting.”

Neutra’s death was declared by the Military Rabbinate based on findings and new intelligence information, according to the IDF.

His family spoke with him last on October 6. Later, when his parents, Ronen and Orna, heard what was happening on October 7, Neutra's father tried contacting his son.&nbsp;

The mother of Neutra, Ronen, told CBS News that her&nbsp;son was interested in peace-building and had looked forward to returning to Long Island and college.&nbsp;

“They said that he’s been taken captive,” said Orna Neutra. “So many have died that it’s just insane that you feel relief to think that your son is not dead, you know?" Orna said.

Reportedly, 97 of the 251 hostages taken by Hamas on October 7, are still in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 35 confirmed dead by the Israeli military.&nbsp;

The missing US-Israeli soldier Omer Maxim Neutra was killed in the Hamas's attack on southern Israel on October 7 last year, and his body is being held hostage in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed on Monday. The 21-year-old lone soldier from New York served as a tank platoon commander in the 7th Armored Brigade's 77th Battalion. He was called a "lone soldier" because his parents were not in Israel. Until the IDF confirmed his killing, it was believed that Neutra was alive and being held hostage by Hamas. During the attack, their tank was attacked by the Hamas group with RPG fire and explosive devices. Then, the four people, including Neutra, Sgt. Shaked Dahan, the driver, Sgt. Nimrod Cohen, the gunner, and Sgt. Oz Daniel, the loader, were abducted to Gaza. Dahan's death was confirmed in November, while Daniel's death was confirmed in February. Now, after 14 months of the deadly attack, Neutra's death has been confirmed by the Israeli military. His father on Monday told Ynet news, "We have received indications that Nimrod is alive. I am sure my son is alive, and I am fighting.” Neutra’s death was declared by the Military Rabbinate based on findings and new intelligence information, according to the IDF. His family spoke with him last on October 6. Later, when his parents, Ronen and Orna, heard what was happening on October 7, Neutra's father tried contacting his son. The mother of Neutra, Ronen, told CBS News that her son was interested in peace-building and had looked forward to returning to Long Island and college. “They said that he’s been taken captive,” said Orna Neutra. “So many have died that it’s just insane that you feel relief to think that your son is not dead, you know?" Orna said. Reportedly, 97 of the 251 hostages taken by Hamas on October 7, are still in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 35 confirmed dead by the Israeli military. Justin Trudeau had an "excellent conversation" with Donald Trump at the president-elect's Florida estate, Canada's prime minister said Saturday, as the United States' neighbours scramble to blunt the impact of Trump's trade threats.

Trudeau flew for a dinner at Mar-a-Lago on Friday, after Trump earlier this week announced plans for import tariffs against Canada and Mexico and rival China.&nbsp;

"It was an excellent conversation," Trudeau told reporters Saturday morning as he was leaving a hotel in West Palm Beach to catch a flight back to Canada.

Trudeau was the latest high-profile guest of Trump, whose impending second term -- which starts in January -- is already overshadowing the last few months of President Joe Biden's administration.

A photograph released by Pennsylvania Senator-elect David McCormick showed Trump and Trudeau side-by-side at the table, surrounded by a dozen guests including Howard Lutnick, Donald Trump's pick for commerce secretary, and Mike Waltz, his choice for national security advisor.

In a social media post on Monday, Trump said he would slap a 25 per cent tariff on Mexico and Canada, accusing the two US neighbours of allowing an "invasion" of the United States by illicit drugs, namely fentanyl, and undocumented migrants.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke with Trump by phone on Wednesday, though the two leaders' accounts of the conversation differed drastically.

Trump claimed that Mexico's left-wing president had "agreed to stop migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border."

Sheinbaum later said she had discussed US-supported anti-migration policies that have long been in place in Mexico.

She said that after that, the talks had no longer revolved around the threat of tariff hikes, downplaying the risk of a trade war.

<h2>Billions in trade&nbsp;</h2>

Biden warned that same day that Trump's tariff threats could "screw up" Washington's relationships with Ottawa and Mexico City.

"I think it's a counterproductive thing to do," Biden told reporters.

For Canada, the stakes of any new tariffs are high.

More than three-quarters of Canadian exports, or Can$592.7 billion ($423 billion), went to the United States last year, and nearly two million Canadian jobs are dependent on trade.

A Canadian government source told AFP that Canada is considering possible retaliatory tariffs against the United States.

Some analysts have suggested Trump's tariff threat may be bluster or an opening salvo in future trade negotiations. But Trudeau rejected those views when he spoke with reporters earlier in Prince Edward Island province.

"Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out," Trudeau said. "There's no question about it.

Morning news brief: Trump threatens BRICS nations; Hamas releases hostage video, and more

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te said in the United States on Saturday that we have to "fight together to prevent war", as he kicked off a week-long tour of the Pacific that has sparked fiery rhetoric from Beijing.

Taiwan faces the constant threat of a military attack by China, which it considers part of its territory and regularly deploys fighter jets and warships around the self-ruled island to press its claims.

Washington is Taipei's most important partner and biggest provider of weapons, but maintains a "strategic ambiguity" when it comes to putting boots on the ground to defend the island from China.

Speaking at a dinner in the US island state of Hawaii on Saturday, Lai said there were "no winners" from conflict and "we have to fight, fight together to prevent war."

Lai earlier received a standing ovation as he walked down a red carpet for the gathering with US government officials, state politicians, members of Congress, and Taiwanese expatriates.

He said the US flag and Hawaii state flag given to him as a gift "symbolise the longstanding friendship between Taiwan and the United States and lays the foundation for further cooperation in the future."

The chairperson of the American Institute in Taiwan, the body that serves as the de facto US embassy, said the partnership between Washington and Taipei was "rock solid".

"The opportunity for you to engage with thought leaders, the diaspora's community and state and local leaders is invaluable, and I know will contribute to further strengthening the rock solid US-Taiwan partnership," Laura Rosenberger said in a pre-recorded video played at the dinner.&nbsp;

Like most countries, Washington does not recognize Taiwan diplomatically but maintains close unofficial ties.

Beijing opposes any international recognition of Taiwan and its claim to be a sovereign state and especially bristles at official contact between the island and the United States.

In a statement, China's foreign ministry said it "strongly condemns" the United States for Lai's stopover and that it had "lodged serious protests with the US".

"China will closely follow the developments and take resolute and strong measures to defend our nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity," it said.

Lai, who is travelling abroad for the first time since taking office in May, was welcomed with red carpets, flower garlands and "alohas" as he began the two-day stopover in Hawaii.

Looking relaxed in a Hawaiian shirt, Lai flitted around, visiting a Pacific island history museum, an emergency management centre and the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbour.

On his arrival, he was given the "red carpet treatment" on the tarmac of Honolulu's international airport, according to his office, which said it was the first time a Taiwanese president had been given such a welcome.

He was met by Ingrid Larson, managing director in Washington of the AIT, Hawaii Governor Josh Green, and others.

Taiwanese government officials have previously stopped over on US soil during visits to the Pacific or Latin America, angering China, which has sometimes responded with military drills around the island.

<h2>'We are all Team Taiwan'</h2>

After Hawaii, Lai will visit Taiwan's allies the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu and Palau -- the only Pacific island nations among the 12 countries that recognize Taiwan's claim to statehood -- and stop over for one night in the US territory of Guam.

Lai said shortly before take-off in Taipei that the trip "ushered in a new era of values-based democracy" and thanked the US government for "helping to make this trip a smooth one".&nbsp;

He said he wanted to "continue to expand cooperation and deepen partnerships with our allies based on the values of democracy, peace and prosperity."

"I once again emphasize that we are all Team Taiwan. We all work together, and we can successfully achieve our goals," Lai told reporters on board the plane.

An AFP journalist is travelling with the president for the duration of the trip.

In a swift response to news of Lai's trip on Thursday, Wu Qian, a spokesperson for China's defense ministry said: "We firmly oppose official interaction with China's Taiwan region in any form" and vowed to "resolutely crush" any attempts for Taiwan independence.

Lai's trip follows the US approval on Friday of a proposed sale to Taiwan of spare parts for F-16s and radar systems, as well as communications equipment, in deals valued at $385 million in total.

The Taiwan president's trip comes as Republican US President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office in January.&nbsp;

During his campaign, Trump caused jitters by suggesting Taiwan should pay the United States for its defence.

We have to 'fight together to prevent war', Taiwan's Lai says in US

Former Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro appears to be searching for a silver lining for himself in Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 United States presidential elections. Facing serious allegations of plotting a coup in the South American nation following the 2022 election loss, Bolsonaro is now hoping to stage a political comeback.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday (Nov 28) that Bolsonaro is hoping for Trump to threaten Brazil with sanctions if courts bar him from running for the top office until 2030 for attacking the country’s voting system.

“Trump is back, and it’s a sign we’ll be back, too,” the US newspaper quoted Bolsonaro&nbsp;as saying.

<h2>The alleged 2022 coup plot</h2>

Bolsonaro’s statement comes just days after Brazil police released a damning report linking the former president to an alleged design to overturn the 2022 election that he lost to his left-wing rival and incumbent&nbsp;President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The report claimed that Bolsonaro “planned, acted and was directly and effectively aware of the actions of the criminal organisation aiming to launch a coup d’etat and eliminate the democratic rule of law.”

Bolsonaro on the other hand alleges political witch-hunting and denies any wrongdoing.

Record-breaking travel numbers meet stormy conditions

The storm arrives just as Americans are set to embark on what is expected to be one of the busiest travel periods in recent years. With roads already crowded and airports bracing for delays, the storm could make conditions even worse, especially in the Midwest and along the East Coast.

To improve looks and artificially making their features look better, teenagers have been using filters on social media platforms to alter their real look. The billion-user social media company, TikTok, is now imposing several restrictions on the use of beauty filters due to rise in anxiety concerns and falling self-esteem.&nbsp;

In the upcoming weeks, teenagers will be restricted from artificially making their eyes bigger, plumping their lips, and smoothing or changing their face tone.&nbsp;

These restrictions will be applied to filters, including&nbsp;'Bold Glamour'&nbsp;that changes people's features in a way that makeup cannot.&nbsp;

However, comic filters that add dog's ears, noses, or bunny ears would not be affected.&nbsp;

TikTok announced this change during a safety forum at its European headquarters in Dublin.&nbsp;

These filters on such platforms, some provided by TikTok, meanwhile, others created by users, have caused pressure on teenagers, specifically girls, to adopt a polished physical appearance with negative emotional repercussions.&nbsp;

Earlier, TikTok also announced that they were bringing changes in their systems to block users under 13 from the platform, which could potentially remove thousands of British children from accessing the platform.&nbsp;

Billionaire Elon Musk, tapped by US President-elect Donald Trump to slash federal government spending, lashed out at modern fighter jets on Monday, saying that drones were the future of air combat.&nbsp;

"Manned fighter jets are obsolete in the age of drones anyway. Will just get pilots killed," said the head of SpaceX, Tesla, and X, in a post on his social media platform.

Musk singled out the F-35 –&nbsp;a next-generation fighter jet manufactured by US-based Lockheed Martin that entered service in 2015 –&nbsp;for criticism.

"Meanwhile, some idiots are still building manned fighter jets like the F-35," he posted, alongside a video of hundreds of drones hovering in formation in the sky.

For Mauro Gilli, a researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, "what makes the F-35... expensive is the software and the electronics, not the pilot per se."

This is significant "because a reusable drone would need to get all that flashy electronics of an F-35," he said on X.

He also pointed out that the existence of the F-35 had forced US rivals to develop their own aircraft and advanced radar to match it.

"By simply existing, the F-35 and the B-1 force Russia and China into strategic choices, they would not have to make otherwise (i.e. budget allocations)," Gilli said, referring to B-1 heavy bomber aircraft.
