<h2><strong>Turkish airstrikes in Syria</strong></h2>

<p>The conflict in the region escalated nearly a week after the Kurdish militants claimed responsibility for a bomb attack near the Turkish parliament, which wounded two police officers and killed the two attackers.</p>

<p>Turkey has previously said that the attackers arrived from Syria but the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) denied this. However, this has not stopped Ankara from launching a barrage of air strikes and attacks in northern Syria and Iraq.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Targets belonging to PKK/YPG terrorists in northern Syria’s Euphrates Shield, Olive Branch, and Peace Spring operation areas were hit strongly all night long,” said the Turkish defence ministry, on Saturday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, Turkey views the People’s Protection Units (YPG) as a terrorist organisation and says that it is indistinguishable from the PKK. “The PKK and the YPG are the same terrorist organisation, they are our legitimate target everywhere,” said the defence ministry official, on Thursday (Oct 5).&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the United States and European Union deem the PKK a terrorist organisation, not the YPG. In fact, the YPG is said to be the spearhead of the main ally of the US-led coalition against the Islamic state, which has soured Washington’s relations with Ankara as well as Paris.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Democratic party official is the latest high-level American official to visit China as Washington seeks to ease tensions with Beijing. He&nbsp;is also leading a bipartisan congressional delegation to Asia, which includes stops in South Korea and Japan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The group of six senators landed at Shanghai's Pudong airport at 2:00 pm (local time).&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>China-US economic ties</strong></h2>

<p>During his meeting with Chen Jining, the ruling Chinese Communist Party’s chief official in Shanghai, Schumer stressed that the US “does not want to decouple our economies” or a conflict and wanted to achieve a level playing field, “as we compete economically.”</p>

<p>Schumer, as quoted by Reuters, said that “many of our constituents feel that in instances China does not treat American companies fairly,” and stressed the need for “reciprocity, allowing American companies to compete as freely in China as Chinese companies are able to compete here.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the Chinese official, Chen said the ties between the two countries were the most important bilateral relationship in the world and that they need to cooperate.</p>

<p>In 2022, after passing a sweeping bill to boost competition with China in semiconductors and other technology.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Schumer and Democratic committee leaders, earlier this year said that they would introduce legislation to limit the flow of technology to China as well as tighten rules to block American capital from going to Chinese companies.</p>

<p>The Senate majority leader during the meeting also raised an issue of Chinese firms’ role in the fentanyl drug addiction crisis in the United States. “This is not the government but this is Chinese companies,” Schumer stressed, as quoted by AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, “They are fuelling the fentanyl crisis that is poisoning communities across the United States.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier this week, Washington also sanctioned a China-based network for producing and distributing chemicals used to make drugs which included those used to make fentanyl which are said to have been fueling the drug epidemic in the US.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Beijing opposing the sanctions has said that the opioid problem is “rooted in” the United States and not China’s responsibility. A report by Bloomberg said Schumer’s delegation has also sought a meeting with President Xi Jinping.</p>

<h2><strong>US restricts trade with 42 Chinese entities</strong></h2>

<p>US Commerce Department, on Friday (Oct 6) added 42 Chinese companies to a government export control list for their support of Russia’s military and defense industrial base which also included supply of US-origin integrated circuits.</p>

<p>Seven entities from Finland, Germany, India, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom were also added to the list.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In my administration, support for Israel's security is rock solid and unwavering."</p>

<p>"Iran has helped fund this war against Israel, and Joe Biden's policies that have gone easy on Iran has helped to fill their coffers. Israel is now paying the price for those policies," said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican running for his party's presidential nomination.</p>

<p>However, a Biden administration official asserted that not a single cent out of the $6 billion has been spent yet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I can't comment on 2024 because of the Hatch Act. <p>Police in New Jersey, USA have opened a homicide investigation after an Indian-origin couple and their two children were found dead in their home. The Plainsboro Police Department in New Jersey said that Tej Pratap Singh (43), Sonal Parihar (42) were found dead with their sons, one 10-year-old and other 6-year-old. They were found dead in their home sometime after 4:30 pm on Wednesday (October 4), said the police.</p>

<p>Plainsboro Police Department Chief Eamon Blanchard and Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone announced on Thursday that homicide investigation has been opened in this case.</p>

<p>"This tragedy remains under investigation and autopsies are being performed today," they said as quoted by Press Trust of India (PTI). They added that initial investigation revealed that there was no threat to public.</p>

<p>The police department has appealed to people to approach police if anyone has information or surveillance footage of the area.</p>

<p>"We are all saddened by this tragic event. What happened in our community is beyond comprehension," stated Mayor Peter Cantu.</p>

<p>"Please be assured that this is an isolated occurrence and there are no additional concerns for the safety and well-being of the community related to this incident," said Police Chief Blanchard as he sought to assure the public.</p>

<p>Relatives of the family called them for a welfare check. The remains were discovered soon after.</p>

<p>Relatives told CBS News that Singh and Parihar appeared to be a happy couple. Singh was even active in the community.</p>

<p>Singh's LinkedIn profile says he was a Lead APIX Engineer for Ness Digital Engineering. Both of them had careers in Information Technology sector.</p>

<p>“The district was informed by local law enforcement of a horrific tragedy involving one of our Plainsboro families with a Wicoff student and a Millstone River School student,” said school district Superintendent David Aderhold, as quoted by PTI. He was referring to two elementary schools in the area.</p>

<p>“As the law enforcement investigation is ongoing, we are unable to provide any additional information at this time. The District joins our community in grief and sorrow over this tragic event.”</p>

<p>The family was described by the neighbours as being friendly.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A man from the United States, who groped a woman passenger while she was sleeping aboard a flight, was sentenced to imprisonment for nearly two years on Thursday (Oct 5).</p>

<p>Hailing from South Carolina, 50-year-old Mohammad Jawad Ansari put his hand on the inner thigh of a woman as she slept in the middle seat of a plane that took off from Cleveland for Los Angeles in February 2020.</p>

<p>The victim woke up and pushed Ansari's hand away, left her seat, and informed a flight attendant about what had happened. The flight attendants observed Ansari during the remainder of the flight and believed he was pretending to sleep, said the officials.</p>

<p>Ansari, who earlier denied the charge of abusive sexual contact, was found guilty after a four-day trial that was conducted in May, said the Department of Justice.</p>

<p>“[Ansari] committed a serious offence that caused immediate and long-lasting harm to [the victim],” prosecutors argued in a sentencing memorandum.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On flights, the victim "now struggles to fall asleep because she is constantly concerned about ‘what if someone touches me.’"</p>

<p>The woman, who did not know Ansari, kept enduring the abusive contact for up to an hour, prosecutors said.</p>

<p>Ansari's attorney, Caleb Mason, stated that they intend to appeal his conviction.</p>

<p>Mason in a court filing asserted that Ansari was a law-abiding person and the conduct that he was convicted of was an aberration.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office issued a public service announcement saying that "Most passengers travel by air without incident, but if you or a loved one encounter sexual misconduct, whether physical or verbal, please alert your flight attendant immediately because timely reporting is important for responding investigators."</p>
