Two suspected migrant-smuggling boats sank off the coast of southern California on Sunday (March 12), killing at least eight people, according to rescuers, as reported by AFP.

"We lost eight souls," the lifeguard chief for the city of San Diego, James Gartland, told a press conference.

"This is one of the worst maritime smuggling tragedies that I can think of in California, certainly here in the city of San Diego," he added, with reference to clandestine migration into the United States.

The disaster occurred at night in a place that Gartland called "hazardous" because of sand bars and in-shore rip currents, although it was unclear what specifically caused it.

He stated that just before midnight on Saturday, a Spanish-speaking person called the 911 emergency line and reported that two small, open boats — one carrying eight people and the other carrying 15 — had capsized at Torrey Pines beach in San Diego, a city close to the Mexican border, trapping about 23 people between them.

A device with radioactive material is missing in the Houston region as per local authorities. They said they want to find it before someone is harmed, as reported by NBC news.

According to state health services officials, the radiography camera contains radioactive material that is "sealed within multiple layers of protection," so unless it is completely disassembled, it is unlikely to pose much of a threat.

"It does have a radioactive symbol on the side of it, but if somebody were to get into the part of the capsule where the radioactive material is, it's extremely hazardous, like losing fingers," said Lara Anton, spokesperson for the Texas Department of State Health Services, who spoke to NBC News.

"Our goal is for people to let us know if they see it so that we can take back possession of it," she added.

A murder suspect in Oregon, US, who was about to stand trial gave the slip to the security personnel manning the courtroom and fled. A video of the incident has gone viral.

According to Oregon state law, all of the suspect’s restraints, such as handcuffs and leg shackles, were removed during the jury selection process.

The incident took place on February 28, but the Washington County Sheriff's Office made the video public on Thursday.

Edi Villalobos Jr, 28, was supposed to stand trial for murder and other charges. After entering the courtroom, a cop removed the shackles placed on him. Sensing an opportunity to escape, he dashed down the hallway and out of the courthouse.

“At around 11 am (local time), the court took a break, and restraints were placed back on Villalobos. When the break ended, deputies again removed all restraints from Villalobos, as directed by Oregon Law. Once the restraints were removed, Villalobos ran out of the courtroom and the courthouse,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement, according to Fox News.

A conservative group in Colorado in the US has spent millions to identify priests who used gay dating and hookup apps, as per reports. This data was then shared with bishops across the country. This project was carried out by Catholic Laity and Clergy for Renewal, reported the Washington Post.

The news outlet obtained tax records of the non-profit and found that the project was carried out to “empower the church to carry out its mission” and provide bishops with “evidence-based resources”

As per the news report, the group spent USD 4 million to obtain the data which was then sent to bishops located across the country. It is not yet fully clear what will be the ramifications of this. The report quoted an annonymous source to say that the data may mean that some of the clergymembers are kept from getting promoted and some of them being pushed to early retirement.

“The power of this story is that you don’t often see where these practices are linked to a specific person or group of people. Here, you can clearly see the link,” said Justin Sherman, a senior fellow at Duke University’s public policy school. Sherman was quoted by the Washington Post.

“Revealing information that harms a person’s reputation without an objectively valid reason – even if it’s true – is considered a sin,” said a member of United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) as quoted by the Post.

Jayd Henricks, president of Catholic Laity and Clergy for Renewal defended collection of information.

“After all, data is used by all major corporations, so why not the Church?” he wrote in his blog.

US lawmakers in the House of Representatives voted unanimously for declassification of US intelligence about origins of COVID-19. The development has come nearly three years after the start of the pandemic which became one of the biggest globe-spanning phenomenon in recent times. US lawmakers voted 419-0 for declassification. The bill will now be sent to US President Joe Biden's desk for his signature.

“The American public deserves answers to every aspect of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Representative Michael Turner, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. He represents the state of Ohio.

Turner said that the information that needs to be public includes "how this virus was created and, specifically, whether it was a natural occurrence or was the result of a lab-related event.”

China was the first country to come into the clutches of coronavirus pandemic. The first cluster of infections was found in the city of Wuhan. The virus soon spread all over the globe bringing economies to standstill due to lockdowns that sometimes lasted for months. It is widely alleged that the coronavirus was a man-made virus and was developed in Chinese labs. China denies all such allegations.

The intelligence that would be declassified as a result of of the legislation will also have information about China's Wuhan Institute of Virology. There are varying opinions within the US intelligence community as to whether the pandemic was a result of a lab leak of coronavirus or its jump to humans from animals.

"Transparency is a cornerstone of our democracy,” said Rep. Jim Himes, of Connecticut, the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, during the debate.

Passage of the legislation was indicative of a rare bipartisanship between Democrats and Republicans.

If the legislation is signed into a law, it will require release within 90 days “any and all information relating to potential links between the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the origin of the Coronavirus Disease."

US President Joe Biden's team had reportedly extended an invitation to Modi for a bilateral summit later this year. India's prime minister Modi met Biden last on the margins of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Bali, Indonesia, where both the leaders discussed global and regional developments.

At the time, Biden said that he looks forward to continuing to support the G20’s work under India’s Presidency. The visit will be crucial against the backdrop of Ukraine war. India's recent G20 meetings have been overshadowed by the West with no consensus over the ongoing conflict in Europe.

US and India have a strategic alliance. The leaders in their last in-person meeting in Indonesia took into account areas like crucial and emerging technologies and artificial intelligence.

“They reviewed the continuing deepening of the India-US strategic partnership including cooperation in future oriented sectors like critical and emerging technologies, advanced computing, artificial intelligence, etc,” the MEA had said in a statement.

In the wake of the Ukraine conflict the leaders also discussed “topical global and regional developments” in the meeting held on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Bali. Modi and Biden underlined the close collaboration between the US and India in groupings like Quad and I2U2.

India, Israel, the US, and the United Arab Emirates are the members of the I2U2, whilst the Quad is made up of India, the US, Australia, Japan, and the Quad.

The United States is planning to further tighten restrictions on export of semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China, said Bloomberg citing people familiar with the developments. As per the report, the US government is has briefed US companies about the plan and has told them that the restrictions may be announced as early as next month.

The Biden administration plans to coordinate with the Netherlands and Japan, according to the report.

This week, Dutch government said it plans new restrictions on semiconductor technology exports to China to protect national security.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Thursday that China was firmly opposed to the restrictions as a means "to intervene and limit normal economic and trade exchanges between Chinese and Dutch companies."

The US had imposed a slew of export restrictions late last year including a measure to cut China off from certain semiconductor chips made anywhere in the world with US equipment.

The relations between the US and China are strained on multiple fronts. In addition to tech field, the two sides often spar on the issue of Taiwan. China considers Taiwan its own territory and has not ruled out use of force to capture it. US is the biggest international backer of Taiwan.

A man from Texas allegedly broke into the house of a woman in Washington and killed her and her husband early Friday (March 10), before dying by suicide. According to reports, the victims were identified as Zohreh Sadeghi, 33, and her husband Mohammed Naseri, 35. Sadeghi was a podcaster and the attacker Ramin Khodakaramrezaei, a 38-year-old trucker, listened to the podcast she hosted.

Police discovered the bodies of Sadeghi, Naseri, and Khodakaramrezaei following officers probing a call reporting shots fired within a home in Redmond, Washington, around 24 kilometres (15 miles) from Seattle.

Authorities said that Sadeghi's mother, who was at home at the time of the attack, escaped and called 911 from a neighbour's house at 1.45 am on Friday. In a statement, the Redmond Police said that first responders pulled Naseri out of the house and performed CPR on him but were unable to resuscitate him.

"Upon entering the home, officers discovered a male and female deceased inside from gunshot wounds. The stalking suspect, 38-year-old Ramin Khodakaramrezaei, was the deceased male inside the home," the police said.

It added Khodakaramrezaei had reportedly listened to Sadeghi's podcast and started communicating with her. "The victim and suspect became friends, but when things escalated, she filed a no-contact order against him," the Richmond Police further said.

Days before the attack, Sadeghi and her husband petitioned a Washington state judge for a protection order against Khodakaramrezaei. The attacker was facing stalking and harassment charges filed on March 2, a report by Fox News on Friday said.

Redmond officers and detectives were familiar with the victim and residence because of the ongoing stalking investigation. Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe, meanwhile, said that the investigation would continue.

"Our hearts go out to the victims' family and the Redmond community following this horrific tragedy. This is an incredibly sad situation and the worst possible outcome of a stalking case," Lowe said.

Prosecutors have signaled to trump that he could face criminal charges relating to his alleged role in hush money payments to porn star stormy Daniels. As per the New York Times, Trump was told he could appear before a Manhattan grand jury next week; if he wished to testify. Stormy Daniels says that she had an affair with trump. She claims trump gave her $130,000 before the 2016 election to not discuss the encounter. Trump has maintained that nothing of the sort ever happened, and in 2018, told reporters he knows nothing about any payment made. A grand jury is hearing evidence and criminal charges may follow. A lawyer for trump confirmed to Reuters that Trump had been invited to testify. If Trump is charged, it would mark the first-ever indictment of a former U.S. President. Trump is seeking the Republican nomination for the 2024 election. Trump has been citing a political witch-hunt. He says it is an attempt to take down the leading candidate in the republican party.

US intelligence warns of risky confrontation between India and China at LAC

US President Joe Biden on Thursday (March 9) proposed spending of more than USD 25 billion, mostly to be spent in the Indo-Pacific region with an eye on growing Chinese assertiveness. The huge expenditure will be focussed at critical infrastructure sector and defence sector.

The proposed expenditure includes over USD 15 billion of proposed investment in the infrastructure sector in the Indo-Pacific and USD 9 billion for shoring up American defence in the region.

“This Budget cements our commitment to confronting global challenges and keeping America safe. It outlines crucial investments to out-compete China globally and to continue support for Ukraine in the face of unprovoked Russian aggression,” Biden said in his message to the Congress.

Biden said it also continues his administration’s work to restore America’s global leadership – reviving key alliances and partnerships, strengthening the military, fostering democracy and human rights, protecting global health, honouring the veterans, fixing immigration systems at home, and advancing cybersecurity through implementation of the National Cybersecurity Strategy.

China is the United States’ only competitor with both the intent to reshape the international order and, increasingly, the economic, diplomatic, military, and technological power to do it, according to Biden’s budgetary proposals sent to the Congress Thursday noon.

During these unprecedented and extraordinary times, the Budget requests both discretionary and mandatory resources to out-compete China and advance American prosperity globally, the White House said.

Ned Price to step down as US State Department's spokesperson; Vedant Patel to be interim spokesperson

China now has an advanced fifth-generation fighter jet J-20 because it copied US military tech and could pose more challenges for the American military in future if necessary steps aren't taken to safeguard weapon information, US defence experts claimed.

In an interview with Fox News, former Acting Under Secretary of Defence for Policy James Anderson said, "They have profited greatly from their thievery over the years. They've put it to good use, and they've come up with an advanced fifth-generation fighter."

Anderson explained how Beijing has been using espionage techniques, including bribery, to US contractors and government officials in more advanced cyber activity to obtain key data.

He claimed that such techniques have saved the Chinese both time and money. "Ultimately, this puts our men and women at greater risk on the battlefield."

According to Fox News, the differences between the two militaries have somehow closed due to intellectual theft.

The Asian country began developing fighter jets back in 2008 that could compete with the US. The J-20 first took flight in 2011, with its introduction to the service in the year 2017.

Many reports back in 2015 began noticing similarities between the technology and capabilities of the Chinese and US fighter jets.

News agency AP reported that some reports even stated that the technologies turned out to have come from the US itself.

China has now developed a fifth-generation stealth fighter that is similar to the U.S. F-22, further closing in a once virtually insurmountable gap between the two militaries in terms of technological capabilities, and experts claim the country managed to do so only due to continued intellectual property theft.

The rising military tensions between the US and China are receiving renewed focus after officials continue to discuss a possible invasion of Taiwan by Beijing.

A senior fellow for the Institute for the Study of War's China programme, Matt McInnis, highlighted China’s focus to make jet engine technology after struggling for decades to keep up with the US and western countries.

Mclnnis joking about China's capabilities said, "That’s always the joke … will the Chinese ever be able to produce their own jet engine?" According to him, the drive to understand the sophisticated jet engines of the US has always remained significant for Chinese spies.

He even pointed to the case of Yanju Xu in 2022, where the Chinese spy was convicted of stealing trade and engine secrets from multiple US aviation, and aerospace companies.

They've put it to good use, and they've come up with an advanced fifth-generation fighter." Anderson explained how Beijing has been using espionage techniques, including bribery, to US contractors and government officials in more advanced cyber activity to obtain key data. Also read | China-Russia courtship to continue despite global backlash, informs top US intelligence official He claimed that such techniques have saved the Chinese both time and money. "Ultimately, this puts our men and women at greater risk on the battlefield." According to Fox News, the differences between the two militaries have somehow closed due to intellectual theft. Watch | US intel chiefs say China likely to press Taiwan and seek to undercut US The rising military tensions between the US and China are receiving renewed focus after officials continue to discuss a possible invasion of Taiwan by Beijing. China is slamming a decision by the Biden administration to approve a $619 million potential arms sale to Taiwan that includes hundreds of missiles for F-16 fighter jets. Tensions are already high between Washington and Beijing, amid Western fears that Beijing may supply weapons to help Russia's war in Ukraine.

Sweden's Ericsson will pay a $206 million fine and plead guilty after violating a 2019 deal with U.S. prosecutors that required the telecoms firm to properly disclose information on its activities in Iraq, China and Djibouti.

The plea agreement with the US Justice Department follows a scandal over possible payments made to the Islamic State militant group through its activities in Iraq.

The Justice Department said in a statement the telecommunications firm fell short in disclosing activities after entering a deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) in 2019 to resolve a probe into years of alleged corruption in China, Vietnam and Djibouti.

Under the DPA, the Justice Department had agreed to hold off prosecuting Ericsson for three years if it paid a steep penalty, implemented "rigorous internal controls", complied with U.S. laws and cooperated fully on any ongoing investigations.

"Ericsson breached the DPA by violating the agreement's cooperation and disclosure provisions," the Justice Department said in a statement.

Though such agreement breaches have been historically rare, the Justice Department has warned a number of companies under President Joe Biden as it cracks down on corporate misconduct and repeat offenders.

The company will be required to serve a probation term through June 2024, and agreed to a one-year extension of an independent compliance monitor, the department added.

Ericsson previously paid a total criminal penalty of more than $520 million and agreed to the imposition of an independent compliance monitor for three years, the Justice Department said on Thursday, referring to the 2019 settlement.

"This resolution is a stark reminder of the historical misconduct that led to the DPA. We have learned from that and we are on an important journey to transform our culture," Ericsson CEO Borje Ekholm said in a statement.

Ericsson last year disclosed that a 2019 internal probe had identified payments designed to circumvent Iraqi customs at a time when militant organizations, including Islamic State, controlled some routes.

The internal probe did not conclude the firm made or was responsible for any payments to any terrorist organization, and the firm continues to probe the matter "in full cooperation with the DOJ and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission," Ericsson said.

Bribery case: Ericsson to pay $206 million for breaching US prosecutor deal

Google has informed staff that there would be fewer senior-level promotions this year than in the past. Google's parent firm Alphabet Inc. laid off over 12,000 employees in January.

“The process (of promotion) is manager-led and will be largely similar to last year – though with our slower pace of hiring, we are planning for fewer promotions to L6 and above, than when Google was growing quickly,” the email stated, according to CNBC.

The term "L6" within Google refers to the first layer of employees; they are people who are regarded as senior and have experience of 10 years or more.

The purpose of this, according to the company, is to guarantee that the increase in the share of "Googlers" holding senior positions corresponds to the organisation's expansion.

These modifications occur as Google introduces its new performance review system, Google Reviews and Development (GRAD). The approach will result in an increase in the number of "Googlers" obtaining negative performance evaluations, and even fewer would receive great ratings, according to a report published by CNBC in December of last year.

Google said in January that it was slashing 12,000 jobs. For several employees, the layoffs were a shock even though there had been months of rumours about them.

Cuts were done after careful consideration, said Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai. "We've decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles. We've already sent a separate email to employees in the US who are affected. In other countries, this process will take longer due to local laws and practices," Pichai said in a statement.

Google to see fewer promotions to senior roles this year: Report

One of the youngest persons ever to get a juris doctorate is reportedly a 15-year-old Mississippi boy, who is gearing up to join law school later this year, as reported by the Guardian.

James "Jimmy" Chilimigras took the law school admission test last year when he was just 14 years old and achieved a 174, the best score in his native Mississippi, as well as the states of Alabama and Louisiana, reported Mississippi-based TV station WLOX.

Jimmy, who has an accounting master's and a bachelor's degree from the online, nonprofit Western Governors University, told WLOX that he is giving himself time until May to make up his mind about going to law school. But, he made it clear: “I’m going to be law school in August – that’s going to be in person, so that’s interesting, [and] I’m really looking forward to it, actually.”

John and Erin Chilimigras, Jimmy's parents, told WLOX that they were aware of Jimmy's intelligence from an early age. Although he was just two years old, he began speaking in complete sentences.

“We always knew he was bright, but I don’t think we expected he would accomplish so much so fast,” Erin Chilimigras said to WLOX.

Jimmy described his journey by stating that he simply enjoys learning and pushing himself, and that his parents were committed to fostering that passion.
