In an effort to make these expensive therapies more accessible to senior citizens in the United States, Medicare is planning to haggle pricing for 10 different drugs with manufacturers. Analysts predict that, at least in the short term, the medication pricing negotiations will have little financial impact on manufacturers.

The backlogs for employment-based green cards are at a new record high with more than 1.8 million immigrants waiting for news on their application.

These immigrants include those who have been sponsored by American businesses or investors but are unable to enter the country because annual limits on green cards available in these categories. The country caps, which restrict any country from acquiring more than 7 per cent of the green cards unless they are left unused by other countries, also have an impact on the line.

Due to this, immigrants from India, who make up 1.1 million of the backlog, must endure the longest before they receive their green cards.

Manu Saigal, General Staffing Directorat Adecco India, noted that given the current circumstances, the potential that India’s experts bring to the global stage cannot be ignored. However, the delays that skilled Indian workers encounter when applying for employment-based green cards not only hamper their personal goals but also create a barrier for companies hoping to capitalise on their skills.

“The uncertainty and protracted processing times act as a deterrent for highly skilled individuals, who could otherwise contribute significantly to their host countries,” she added.

There were 80,324 petitions pending as of March 2023, representing a total of around 171,635 persons, including the spouses and children of the workers. 289,000 people were waiting for the processing of their green card applications, and another 1.3 million people were on hold.

“Efficient immigration policies play a pivotal role in capitalising on the capabilities of international talent. Streamlined processes for green card allocations could unlock India’s workforce potential even further, allowing companies to access the right skills at the right time. Reforming immigration systems can help strike a balance between safeguarding national interests and nurturing global talent mobility,” Saigal said in a statement.

She continued by saying that while it is true that India is becoming a talent hotspot, it is crucial to solve the problems caused by prolonged wait times for green cards for both individuals and the global business landscape.

United States President Joe Biden has approved military aid for Taiwan under the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) programme which is normally used for sovereign states.

United States President Joe Biden has approved military aid for Taiwan under the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) programme which is normally used for sovereign states. As per a notification sent to Congress and seen by the news agency Reuters on Wednesday (August 30), congressional committees have been informed of the US State Department's s intention to obligate up to $80 million in FMF funds in support of Taiwan. "FMF will be used to strengthen Taiwan's self-defence capabilities through joint and combined defence capability and enhanced maritime domain awareness and maritime security capability," the notification read. Taiwan's defence ministry thanked the US but did not give any details about this military aid. The ministry noted that Washington has already been helping strengthen Taiwan's combat capabilities under existing policies and laws. What is FMF? According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSAC), which is part of the US Department of Defense, FMF is a source of financing and may be provided to a partner nation on either a grant (non-repayable) or direct loan basis. FMF enables eligible partner nations to purchase American defence articles, services, and training through either Foreign Military Sales (FMS) or, for a limited number of countries, through the foreign military financing of direct commercial contracts (FMF/DCC) programme, the DSAC says. On Wednesday, Representative Michael McCaul, the Republican chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, said he was glad the administration was "finally" providing FMF to Taiwan. "These weapons will not only help Taiwan and protect other democracies in the region but also strengthen the US deterrence posture and ensure our national security from an increasingly aggressive CCP (Chinese Communist Party)," McCaul said in a statement. China claims Taiwan as its territory and has warned against any forms of "official exchanges" between the US and Taiwan. Beijing has repeatedly complained to Washington about military aid and sales to the island. US announces Taiwan weapons aid package worth $345 million On July 28, the US announced a Taiwan weapons aid package worth up to $345 million. Citing sources, Reuters reported that the package was expected to include four unarmed MQ-9A reconnaissance drones. Taiwan thanked the US for the package but did not disclose any details about it. Last week, the United States also approved a possible $500 million sale to Taiwan of infrared search and track systems for F-16 fighter jets, as well as other equipment. As Hurricane Idalia reached Tallahassee, Florida, a 100-year-old oak tree fell on the governor's mansion. Casey DeSantis, the state's first lady and wife of Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis, was inside the house with their three children, Madison, Mason, and Mamie, when the tree fell. However, no one was injured during the incident. She posted a picture of the giant fallen tree that had split through the trunk on X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, "Our prayers are with everyone impacted by the storm." The original mansion, built in 1907, is located a few blocks away from the Florida State Capitol. After it became structurally unsound, it was rebuilt in 1955. Designed by Palm Beach architect Sims Wyeth, the Greek Revival-style mansion is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Florida governor, a Republican party candidate for president, moved into the mansion with his family in 2019. ALSO READ | Man gets two-year jail for buying alpaca farm with COVID relief money During the storm, he gave regular news conferences from Tallahassee and said he was informed about the tree's collapse. On Wednesday, the storm moved on from Florida to Georgia. However, the storm's bands were still affecting the northern region of the state. Authorities were expecting the floods to worsen as the tide rose, and thousands of people were out of power. People in 28 Florida counties were either ordered or advised to evacuate ahead of Idalia, particularly along the Gulf Coast in places most vulnerable to the storm's heavy flooding. The Category 3 hurricane made landfall Wednesday morning near Keaton Beach in the Big Bend area, where the Florida peninsula meets the panhandle. Tallahassee is around 90 minutes away from Keaton Beach. Storm surge in certain regions was forecast to reach 12 to 16 feet, according to the National Hurricane Centre. Videos and photographs showed rapid floodwaters rising in coastal communities. Tallahassee, in the state's northwestern corner, is not an evacuation zone. The storm, on the other hand, went over that region, inflicting damage. The National Weather Service in Tallahassee issued a flash flood warning for Valdosta, Remerton, and Dasher, Georgia. Tallahassee also issued a warning about power outages that might disrupt traffic lights. Wind gusts of up to 35 mph were predicted for Tallahassee throughout the storm. The National Weather Service warned of the possibility of damage and even impassable roadways due to fallen trees and debris. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

With former US president Donald Trump still having high approval ratings and current President Joe Biden not so much, there is an apparent stir within the Democratic Party ranks about prospects of its hold on the power post-US Presidential Election 2024. RadarOnline[dot]com has reported that secret back-channel talks have started within the Democratic Party to convince former first lady Michelle Obama to run for president.

The news report has said that numbers suggest Michelle Obama would have greater approval ratings (48 per cent) than Biden (36 per cent) if she declared right now that she would be running for president.

“If Michelle announced, the election would go immediately from a hotly contested footrace to a landslide,” a Democrat source reportedly said.

Trump is currently facing a slew of legal troubles. From hush money to a porn star to charges of attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 US elections, he has been forced to make appearances in a number of courts across the US, becoming the first sitting or former US president to suffer this fate. Many of the hearings in these cases are likely to take place just when the race to win the Republican Party nomination to contest the 2024 election heats up in the coming months.

US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said that she rebuffed a Chinese appeal on Tuesday (August 29) to reduce US export controls on technologies that may have possible military uses. However, she said that the two governments have agreed for a meeting of experts to discuss disputes on the issue of protecting trade secrets.

During her Beijing visit to revive frosty relations, Raimondo said that she spoke with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and conveyed complaints to other officials. She said conditions for foreign companies are getting worse following an expansion of an anti-spying law and raids on consulting firms.

High level US officials have been visiting China in past three months in bid to restore relations between the two countries which are at their lowest in decades. The disputes range from those in the field of technology, security and also related to Taiwan.

One of the main complaints from China is curbs on access to processor chips and other US tech. The restrictions have been imposed on security grounds. The curbs are threatening to affect Chinese Communist Party's ambition to develop artificial intelligence and other allied indutries.

The restrictions have hampered Huawei's smartphone business. Huawei is China's first global tech brand.

“Their asks were to reduce export controls on technology” with possible military uses and to retract an order by President Joe Biden that restricts U.S. investment in Chinese companies that might be involved in military development, Raimondo said.

“Of course, I said no,” Raimondo said. “We don’t negotiate on matters of national security.”

The US and China agreed on Monday to exchange information about US export curbs. Raimondo said US hopes this "will increase compliance".

Meanwhile, the two governments agreed to have experts meet to “start to resolve trade secrets issues,” Raimondo said.

“That is one of the big things I hear constantly from business, protection of trade secrets,” she told reporters.

Raimondo also met Premier Li who made an appeal for "concrete actions" by the US to improve relations between the two countries. This was seen as pressure for changes in US policies in variety of areas of conflicting stands.

“We do hope that the US side will work in the same direction as the Chinese side, show sincerity and take concrete actions,” Li said.

The American Embassy said earlier that Raimondo-Li meeting would be a 10-minute "courtesy call". But the meet lasted one hour and 15 minutes.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s government is trying to revive investor interest in China and reassure foreign companies as part of efforts to reverse an economic slump. Raimondo said, however, she didn’t discuss the Chinese economy during her meetings and didn’t get the sense her Chinese counterparts were motivated by the downturn.

Tiger Global, a US-based investment company, concluded its exit from the online food delivery service Zomato on Monday (August 28) by selling all of its shares for a total of Rs 1,123.85 crore ($136 million) through its venture capital fund Internet Fund III Pte Ltd, CNBC TV18 reported.

Tiger Global exited Zomato by selling about 12.35 crore of its shares, realising a transaction value of Rs. 1,124 crore ($136 million) at an average share price of Rs. 91.01 ($1). Tiger Global’s investment relationship with Zomato, a significant participant in India’s food delivery and restaurant discovery markets, came to an end with this transaction.

The sale of Tiger Global’s 1.44 per cent equity ownership in Zomato demonstrates the investment company's strategic choice to make money off of its stake in the online meal delivery service. It’s important to note that Tiger Global had long been a substantial Zomato investment.

Along with Tiger Global, DST Global participated in the share sale through its investment vehicle Apolleto Asia Ltd, selling over 3.2 crore Zomato shares for Rs 288 crore ($34 million).

According to shareholding information with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Tiger Global owned a 1.44 per cent investment in Zomato at the end of the June quarter. Tiger Global sold more than 18.45 crore shares on the open market in August 2022, cutting its ownership in the business by nearly half to 2.77 per cent. Before the deal, Tiger Global’s Internet Fund VI Pte owned 5.11 per cent of the online food delivery service.

In the June quarter of this fiscal year, Zomato saw profits for the first time. The company’s food delivery margins increased to 13.6 per cent and operational improvement in the food division both contributed to the profitability.

When contrasted with a net loss of Rs 186 crore ($22 million) during the same period last year, the company’s combined net profit for the first quarter of this fiscal year was Rs 2 crore ($242,000). Comparing the same quarter of the previous fiscal year to the current one, the consolidated revenue from operations increased 71 per cent year over year to Rs 2,416 crore ($292 million) from Rs 1,414 crore ($171 million).
