Donald Trump promised a new "Golden Age" for America. In the Oval Office, at least, he has lived up to his promise with a blingy makeover. Watch in!

US President Donald Trump brings 'the bling' to oval office makeover

The United Kingdom and Germany have updated their travel advice for citizens visiting the United States, following several incidents where European travellers were detained under what appear to be increasingly strict entry policies.
The developments come as President Donald Trump’s approach to immigration and border control raises concern abroad.

UK strengthens warning

The UK Foreign Office has revised its guidance, now warning that travellers could face arrest or detention if they fail to comply with US entry rules. The updated advice highlights that laws are “strictly” enforced.
“You should comply with all entry, visa and other conditions of entry. The authorities in the US set and enforce entry rules strictly. You may be liable to arrest or detention if you break the rules,” the advice states.
Earlier this year, the travel warning was less severe, saying, “The authorities in the US set and enforce entry rules.”

Tourist detained for 19 days

The update follows the widely reported case of Rebecca Burke, a 28-year-old graphic artist from the UK, who was held for 19 days by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement over what was described as a “visa mix-up.”
Her parents, Paul and Andrea Burke, spoke to the BBC about the ordeal, describing how their daughter was taken in “leg chains, waist chains and handcuffs.”
“She is not Hannibal Lecter,” said Paul Burke, adding that the experience left Rebecca “traumatised.” She has since returned home.

Germany issues similar advisory

Germany has also updated its travel advisory to reflect the increasing number of detentions involving its citizens. The German government stressed that having a visa or an entry waiver does not guarantee entry into the United States.
Several German nationals were reportedly detained at the border, with one incident involving a traveller carrying tattoo equipment.

Travel warnings and tourism impact

These high-profile cases, combined with revised travel warnings, are raising concerns in the tourism industry. Experts say that international coverage, Trump’s tariffs, and his rhetoric against other nations are making the US less appealing to foreign visitors.
In a recent Fox News interview, Trump claimed the European Union was created to “screw” the United States and accused the EU of having “raped and pillaged” the country.

A federal jury convicted an Indian national working for smuggling 174 pounds of MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy across the US-Canada border. Jaskaran Singh, 31, was working for a transnational drug-trafficking organization that supplied from Canada.
Singh was found guilty of possession with intent to distribute. His trial began on March 17, while sentencing is expected on June 25. He could face a maximum prison term of 20 years and may also face deportation from the US, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.

Singh travelled from California to Washington’s northern border to meet three men who were carrying the drugs from British Colombia.
The conviction comes amid the heightened tension between the two countries over US President Donald Trump’s accusation that Canada is becoming a dangerous centre for fentanyl production and export.
“Mr. Singh trafficked more than 170 pounds of illegal drugs across our northern border into the United States,” said Acting United States Attorney Richard Barker. He added that the seizure was one of the largest ever in Eastern Washington and had a street value of more than $7.8 million.

Minutes later, Singh was stopped while driving a rented Honda Odyssey away from the US-Canada border. He was found with the same backpacks and the suitcase that were carried by the three individuals. Border Patrol Agents found 173.7 pounds of MDMA in the van. Investigators also found a map of the area on his phone and details of plans in the messages.
While the three couriers were able to get away back to Canada, Singh was arrested.
“The transnational drug trafficking organization for whom Singh worked had identified the ideal, isolated location in rural Washington to smuggle illegal drugs across the northern border,” said Barker. “Fortunately, our team of experienced Border Patrol agents were ready, and they intercepted this poison before it could harm communities in Eastern Washington.”

US authorities nab Indian national smuggling 170 pounds of ecstasy from Canada

Taliban authorities on Thursday freed US citizen George Glezmann after more than two years of detention, in a deal brokered by Qatar, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced.
The release was announced after the Taliban government's foreign minister hosted US hostage envoy Adam Boehler and other US officials in the Afghan capital.
"Today, after two and a half years of captivity in Afghanistan, Delta Airlines mechanic George Glezmann is on his way to be reunited with his wife, Aleksandra," Rubio said in a statement.
"George's release is a positive and constructive step. It is also a reminder that other Americans are still detained in Afghanistan," he added.

Glezmann was en route to Qatar, a source with knowledge of the release told AFP.
Ahead of the announcement, Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi hosted Boehler, who was accompanied by Washington's former envoy to Kabul, Zalmay Khalilzad, the ministry said.
"Today is a good day," Khalilzad said on X.
The Taliban authorities decided to free Glezmann on "humanitarian grounds" and as a "goodwill gesture".
The prisoner release reflects "Afghanistan's readiness to genuinely engage all sides, particularly the United States of America, on the basis of mutual respect and interests", a foreign ministry statement said.
The US delegation was the first from Washington since US President Donald Trump took office in January, foreign ministry spokesman Hafiz Zia Ahmad told AFP.
Contacts between the two sides since the Taliban returned to power in 2021 has usually taken place in third countries.

Taliban authorities announced late last month the arrest of a Chinese-American woman on February 1 in the province of Bamiyan, a tourist attraction west of Kabul known for its giant Buddhas until they were destroyed in 2001 by the Taliban.
Officials have refused to detail the reasons for her arrest.
At least one other American, Mahmood Habibi, is detained in Afghanistan.
In July, Kabul announced it was in discussions with Washington over a prisoner exchange.
The talks took place in Qatar during an international conference that brought together UN representatives, Taliban authorities, and envoys for Afghanistan -- generally those based in neighbouring countries or within the region.
In January, two Americans detained in Afghanistan -- Ryan Corbett and William McKenty -- were freed in exchange for an Afghan fighter, Khan Mohammed, who was convicted of narco-terrorism in the United States.
Two weeks later, a Canadian former soldier, David Lavery, was released after more than two months held in Afghanistan, in a deal brokered by Qatar.
Trump signed a peace deal with the Taliban authorities during his first term in office and, following his re-election, the Kabul government expressed hopes for a "new chapter" with Washington.
The government in Kabul is not recognised by any country, but several including Russia, China and Turkey have kept their embassies open in the Afghan capital.
Delegations from these countries, both diplomatic and economic, make frequent visits to Kabul.
The Taliban government also reports less frequent visits from Western officials, notably British and Norwegian.
