As US President Donald Trump's administration released the final set of JFK files on Tuesday (March 18), it came to light that the State Department was allegedly warned about assassin Lee Harvey Oswald's plan to assassinate John F Kennedy months before the incident.&nbsp;
A man named Sergyj Czornonoh told the US British Ambassador how he kept on warning authorities about Oswald's plan to murder JFK multiple times, according to the documents released on Tuesday evening.&nbsp;
Czornonoh said he was detained in London on July 18, 1963, and was then questioned by authorities, adding that he told them that Oswald is planning to kill the president.&nbsp;

Around four months later, the 35th president of the US, John F. Kennedy was assassinated while riding in a presidential motorcade through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas, on November 22.&nbsp;
Czornonoh said that he warned American Vice Consul Tom Blackshear about the plans of Oswald, who was trying to defect to Russia.&nbsp;
He added that Wasilev Consul, who at the time time was working at the Soviet embassy in Bulgaria, provided the information about Oswald.&nbsp;

Czornonoh alleged that Consul's partner 'came into my room' and repeatedly claimed that Oswald was an 'assassin' and 'will kill President Kennedy.'
According to the letter, Czornonoh told a State Department official on August 19 that Oswald was in possession of a weapon.&nbsp;
However, his concern was disregarded, Czornonoh alleged, claiming, "Director told me you too can have a weapon &mdash; so what if Oswald got a weapon."
The killing of JFK happened a month after Czornonoh's alleged conversation with the US State Department.&nbsp;

Days after Palestinian activist and Columbia graduate Mahmoud Khalil was detained by US federal immigration authorities, he made his first public remarks, stressing that he was being targeted by President Donald Trump's administration for his political beliefs.
Calling himself a "political prisoner", Khalil highlighted the conditions faced by immigrants in US detention.&nbsp;
Khalil was arrested by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement recently for allegedly leading pro-Palestine protests at the Ivy League campus in New York City in 2024. He was taken from his apartment on March 8.&nbsp;

Khalil explained that he had to sleep on a "cold floor" at an ICE field office in Lower Manhattan, before being transferred to the Elizabeth Detention Centre in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where he "slept on the ground and was refused a blanket despite my request."&nbsp;
<h2>'Trump targeting me...'</h2>
Khalil said that the Trump administration is "targeting me as part of a broader strategy to suppress dissent."
"Visa holders, green-card carriers, and citizens alike will all be targeted for their political beliefs," he added.&nbsp;
Khalil further said that his arrest was a "direct consequence of exercising my right to free speech as I advocated for a free Palestine and an end to the genocide in Gaza."&nbsp;
&ldquo;With January&rsquo;s ceasefire now broken, parents in Gaza are once again cradling too-small shrouds, and families are forced to weigh starvation and displacement against bombs. It is our moral imperative to persist in the struggle for their complete freedom," he stressed.&nbsp;

<h2>'The only concern at that time...'</h2>
In his letter dictated by phone from a detention facility in Louisiana, Khalil said that his only concern at the time of his arrest was the safety of his wife Noor Abdalla, who was about eight months pregnant then.&nbsp;
"I had no idea if she would be taken too, since the agents had threatened to arrest her for not leaving my side," Khalil said. "DHS would not tell me anything for hours &mdash; I did not know the cause of my arrest or if I was facing immediate deportation."

<h2>'Justice escapes contours of US immigration facilities'</h2>
As Khalil continued to explain his ordeal at the detention centres, he said, "Justice escapes the contours of this nation&rsquo;s immigration facilities."
&ldquo;Who has the right to have rights?&rdquo; Khalil asked. &ldquo;It is certainly not the humans crowded into the cells here. It isn&rsquo;t the Senegalese man I met who has been deprived of his liberty for a year, his legal situation in limbo and his family an ocean away. It isn&rsquo;t the 21-year-old detainee I met, who stepped foot in this country at age nine, only to be deported without so much as a hearing.&rdquo;
After Khalil's arrest, Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social, saying Khalil's arrest is "one of many to come" against pro-Palestine students, adding that these protesters are not students but "paid agitators".

Trump-Putin Talks: US pushes for truce between Russia & Ukraine

The Trump administration plans to lay off hundreds of scientists and researchers from the US federal government as part of drastic cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), lawmakers warned Tuesday.
The firings would result from the EPA, which tackles environmental issues including pollution, clean water and climate change, eliminating its scientific research arm that employs over 1,500 people.
Documents reviewed by Democratic staff of the US House Committee on Science, Space and Technology said the cuts would mean a majority of employees "will not be retained," while the remaining positions would be moved to other departments within the agency.

The layoffs, which have not been finalized, would further President Donald Trump's goal of slashing government spending by reducing the federal workforce as well as rolling back environmental and public health regulations.
Trump in February said EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, his pick to oversee the agency, plans to slash around 65 percent of the agency's 17,000-strong staff.
When asked about the planned cuts, EPA spokesperson Molly Vaseliou said the agency "is taking exciting steps as we enter the next phase of organizational improvements."

"We are committed to enhancing our ability to deliver clean air, water, and land for all Americans," Vaseliou continued.
"While no decisions have been made yet, we are actively listening to employees at all levels to gather ideas on how to increase efficiency and ensure the EPA is as up-to-date and effective as ever."
Plans to obliterate the EPA's research office sparked outcry from Democratic lawmakers.
"Every decision EPA makes must be in furtherance of protecting human health and the environment, and that just can't happen if you gut EPA science," said Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren of California, the top Democrat on the House science committee.

"Last time around, Trump and his cronies politicized and distorted science...now, this is their attempt to kill it for good" Lofgren said, adding that the "EPA cannot meet its legal obligation to use the best available science" without the researchers.

"Every decision EPA makes must be in furtherance of protecting human health and the environment, and that just can't happen if you gut EPA science," said Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren of California, the top Democrat on the House science committee. Trump administration to fire hundreds of government scientists amid drastic cuts to EPA

The Trump administration’s decision to expel the South African ambassador is its latest move against a country it has singled out for sanctions and accused of being anti-white and anti-American.

US President Trump's feud with South Africa escalates

The United States conducted a series of airstrikes on March 15, targeting Houthi-controlled sites in Yemen. The strikes, carried out by F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, focused on demolishing weapons storage facilities and command centers linked to recent Houthi assaults in the Red Sea.

US President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Iran, demanding an end to Houthi attacks on US warships or face consequences. This comes after the Houthis launched their third attack in 48 hours on a US aircraft carrier. As tensions rise, the UN has called for restraint while oil prices continue to climb. The situation in the Red Sea remains volatile.

Canadian entrepreneur and actor Jasmine Mooney, popular for her role in American Pie Presents, said that she was detained for almost two weeks in "inhumane" conditions by the US border authorities over an incomplete visa.&nbsp;
Mooney was detained on March 3 in San Diego, California, as her work visa to the US was reportedly revoked in November 2024 while traveling from Vancouver to Los Angeles, and she was attempting to file a new application.
Mooney was detained at the San Ysidro border crossing between Mexico and San Diego, the busiest land border crossing in the world, her mother, Alexis Eagles, said. &nbsp;
Eagles said that instead of sending Mooney to Canada or asking her to fix her application, the US Customs and Border Protection officers arrested her.

&ldquo;Every single guard that sees me is like, &lsquo;What are you doing here? I don&rsquo;t understand. You&rsquo;re Canadian. How are you here?&rsquo;,&rdquo; Mooney said in an interview with ABC 10 last week from the Arizona immigration detention centre where she was being held.

The Canadian actor spent three nights in detention, and then she was transferred. Mooney's mother said, "We eventually learned that about 30 people, including Jasmine, were removed from their cells at 3 am and transferred to the San Luis detention centre in Arizona."
She complained that they were housed together in a "single concrete cell with no natural light, fluorescent lights that are never turned off, no mats, no blankets, and limited bathroom facilities.&rdquo;

The Chinese state media gladly welcomed the Trump administration's decision to cut down government spending for news outlets Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Asia, which had a record of reporting on authoritarian regimes.&nbsp;

After Israeli army launched a wave of deadly strikes in Gaza, Palestinian militant group Hamas accused the US of exending "unlimited political and military support" to Israel, stressing that Washington holds full responsibility for the massacres in Gaza.&nbsp;
The Palestinian militant group blamed Trump's administration for "unlimited political and military support" to Israel for a deadly wave of air strikes in Gaza that killed hundreds of Palestinians.
"With its unlimited political and military support for the occupation (Israel), Washington bears full responsibility for the massacres and the killing of women and children in Gaza," Hamas said in a statement.&nbsp;
It further said that the US has coordinated with Israel in the "criminal occupation" and resuming the genocide.&nbsp;
The Palestinian militant group issued a statement on Telegram, saying that "the criminal occupation, with prior American coordination, is resuming its genocide and committing dozens of massacres against our people.&rdquo;
Hamas spokesperson Abdel Latif al-Qanua said that the US coordination confirms its partnership in the genocide.&nbsp;
&ldquo;The occupation&rsquo;s prior coordination with the US administration confirms its partnership in the genocide against our people and provides cover for its war crimes," the spokesperson said.&nbsp;

&ldquo;Israel waited three weeks for Hamas to begin serious talks on the Witkoff outline,&rdquo; the official added. &ldquo;That didn&rsquo;t happen.&rdquo;

The White House on Monday (March 17) dismissed a suggestion from a French member of the European Parliament to return the Statue of Liberty, saying that France would be "speaking German" without American intervention during World War II.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to the French MEP's comments on Monday, stating, "My advice to that unnamed, low-level French politician would be to remind them that it's only because of the United States of America that the French are not speaking German right now, so they should be very grateful to our great country."
