One person was killed and 22 others, including children, were wounded in a mass shooting at the Kansas city chiefs' victory parade in Kansas city, Missouri on the St. Valentine's day. Two men have been charged with second-degree murder over the shooting. But ruling out any nexus to terrorism or homegrown violent extremism, the police said the shooting was the result of a personal altercation that escalated. America, once again, was left stunned, paranoid and grieving. This is the 49th incident of mass shooting in America this year alone. With more guns than inhabitants, the United States has the highest rate of gun deaths of any developed country. Surveys have established that 57% of Americans are in favor of stricter gun laws. But the Republicans, the staunch defenders of America's constitutional right to bear arms, have repeatedly, for years, opposed any effort to tighten gun control measures.

"We will continue to process the evidence that has been gathered to ensure that there is justice for Audrii," Lyons said.

Polk County District Attorney Shelly Sittom disclosed that her office is in the process of preparing arrest warrants for Don Steven McDougal, 42, in connection with Audrii's disappearance. McDougal, who had been identified as a person of interest, is facing the possibility of capital murder charges.

In a comprehensive survey conducted by political scientists Justin Vaughn and Brandon Rottinghaus, 154 scholars, predominantly affiliated with the American Political Science Association, were tasked with evaluating the greatness of all US presidents, from George Washington to Joe Biden. This survey aimed to provide a thorough ranking of presidential greatness, a task previously undertaken by Vaughn and Rottinghaus in 2015 and 2018.

Respondents were asked to assign a rating to each president on a scale of 0 to 100, representing their overall greatness. A score of 0 indicated failure, 50 represented an average rating, and 100 signified greatness. The average score for each president was then calculated, resulting in a comprehensive ranking from highest to lowest.

The top positions in the ranking remained relatively stable compared to previous surveys. Abraham Lincoln retained the first position for his remarkable leadership during the Civil War and his pivotal role in abolishing slavery. Franklin Delano Roosevelt and George Washington, recognised for their significant contributions during times of national crisis, closely followed.

Impact of racial justice movements

A noteworthy aspect of the survey was the observed shifts in rankings for presidents associated with racial injustice. Andrew Jackson and Woodrow Wilson, previously ranked higher, experienced downward trends due to reevaluations of their treatment of marginalised groups.

Barack Obama, the first Black president in US history, saw a notable rise in his ranking, ascending nine places to seventh. This elevation reflects his historic presidency in consecutive terms.

Ulysses S Grant witnessed an improvement in his ranking, attributed to his efforts in protecting the rights of freed slaves despite facing corruption allegations during his presidency.

In stark contrast, Donald Trump ranked at the bottom of the list, even behind presidents who failed to prevent or heal the Civil War. His tumultuous tenure, marked by a contentious post-election period and numerous legal challenges, contributed to his low standing in the survey.

In a concerning incident at the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska, visitors' thoughtless actions endangered the life of a rare white alligator named Thibodaux. This 36-year-old alligator, renowned for its leucistic condition, which results in translucent white skin and striking deep blue eyes, had to undergo an emergency veterinary procedure after ingesting an alarming 70 metal coins thrown into its cage by unaware visitors.

Thibodaux's leucism makes it a unique resident of the zoo, drawing visitors from far and wide to catch a glimpse of its ethereal appearance.

However, this condition also makes Thibodaux more vulnerable to harm, as evidenced by the recent incident. Veterinary examinations revealed the presence of the metal coins in its stomach, posing a grave threat to its health and well-being.

The zoo's animal health team acted swiftly to address the situation, recognising the urgent need for intervention to prevent any potential complications.

With Thibodaux's health hanging in the balance, veterinarians sprang into action, employing their expertise and specialised equipment to perform a delicate procedure.

Anesthetising Thibodaux ensured its safety during the procedure, while a carefully inserted plastic pipe protected its mouth and facilitated the safe extraction of the coins. Advanced tools, including a camera, aided in the precise retrieval of the foreign objects, minimising the risk of further harm to the alligator, as reported by The Independent.

Following the procedure, X-ray imaging confirmed the presence of the coins in Thibodaux's stomach, validating the necessity of the emergency intervention.

With the coins successfully removed, Thibodaux began its road to recovery under the watchful care of the zoo's animal health team. Despite the ordeal, Thibodaux showed resilience, displaying signs of improvement and resilience in the days following the procedure.

In response, the zoo issued a plea to the public, urging visitors to refrain from throwing coins into animal enclosures. Instead, they encouraged guests to use designated souvenir coin machines, promoting a safer and more respectful interaction with the zoo's inhabitants.

“Any loose change can instead be turned in for a souvenir coin in one of the several machines around the Zoo or in our coin wishing well located in the atrium of the Desert Dome,” the zoo said in a statement.

Russian and Turkish officials have acknowledged the challenges posed by the sanctions, with the Kremlin expressing awareness of the tightening regulations imposed by Turkish banks. Meanwhile, a senior US State Department official spoke on the importance of foreign financial institutions adhering to sanctions and reiterated ongoing discussions with Turkish counterparts. Preliminary trade data reveals a significant decline in Turkish exports to Russia, signalling the initial impact of the sanctions on bilateral trade. Machinery exports have been particularly affected, raising concerns about the broader implications for non-oil trade. (With inputs from Reuters)

What happened?

A domestic abuse incident escalated into a deadly armed encounter in Minnesota on Sunday (Feb 18) after a man shot dead two Burnsville police officers and one paramedic.

The shooter, who has not yet been publicly identified, barricaded himself inside a house in Burnsville with multiple children early on Sunday morning. Three first responders were killed and one was injured when the confrontation turned into a gunfight.

The state officers said that the assailant was dead and the seven children trapped inside the house, all ranging between two to 15, were all safely rescued.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz released a statement saying that the two police officers, Paul Elmstrand, 27, and Matthew Ruge, 27, along with fire paramedic Adam Finseth, 40, were killed "while responding to a call of a family in danger."

"This is heartbreaking," Walz told a press conference Sunday evening.

Emergency dispatch got a call on Sunday from inside a home in Burnsville at around 1:50 am "where a man was reported to be armed and barricaded with family members," said Drew Evans, superintendent at the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

"We later learned that there were seven young children in the home, ranging from ages 2 to 15 at the time this event occurred. When officers got to the scene, the individual was barricaded and they spent quite a bit of time negotiating with this individual who was barricaded in the home, and additional officers responded, at that time," Evans said.

"At one point during that barricaded situation, the subject opened fire on the officers in the home and officers Elmstrand, Ruge, and Finseth from the fire department, Mr. Finseth. were killed by the gunman during the response. One other officer, Sergeant Adam Medlicott was injured and was shot as well where he's suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but has been treated, is in the process of being treated. At approximately 8 am, the subject was reported to be deceased in the home, and later that morning those other children and family members were able to escape from the home,” he added.

The investigation

Numerous firearms were recovered from the property, however, the authorities did not specify if the weapons were pistols or more powerful semi-automatic rifles.

"We are in the very beginning stages of this investigation," Evans said.

"Today three members of our team made the ultimate sacrifice for this community. They are heroes," Burnsville Police Chief Tanya Schwartz told reporters.

Shooting incidents are more common in the United States where there are more guns than people and one-third of adults possess a handgun.
