Valerii Zaluzhnyi, former commander-in-chief and current ambassador to the UK revealed the US-Ukrainian military headquarters in Germany, calling it a "secret weapon" for planning military operations during the war with Russia.
Zaluzhnyi said the headquarters is located in &nbsp;Wiesbaden, Germany, adding that it has become a secret weapon for our partners.&nbsp;
"This headquarters has truly become a secret weapon for our partners and me in planning operations and formulating the requirements for their implementation," Zaluzhnyi said in a post on Facebook on April 8.&nbsp;

China&rsquo;s top leaders are expected to meet as soon as Wednesday (Apr 9) to discuss measures to boost the economy and stabilise capital markets amid escalations in the trade war with the United States, Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
Economists have warned that US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s tariffs on the world&rsquo;s second-largest economy could result in a decline of one to two per cent in the country&rsquo;s growth, worsen industrial overcapacity, put domestic jobs at risk, and further fuel deflationary forces.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Sanjay Malhotra on Wednesday said it is not inflation but US President Donald Trump's trade tariffs which is more concerning to the central bank. During the first bi-monthly press conference of the fiscal year, the governor also mentioned that the tariff-related uncertainties are the reason the RBI has lowered India's GDP growth forecast.
Donald Trump has been on a tariff spree; the reciprocal tariffs on India include a 26% tax on goods. Now, India is not the only country; these taxes range from 10% to 49%, the highest.

In his address Malhotra said, "The recent trade tariff-related measures have exacerbated uncertainties clouding the economic outlook across regions, posing new headwinds for global growth and inflation."
"Amidst this turbulence, the US dollar has weakened appreciably; bond yields have softened significantly; equity markets are correcting; and crude oil prices have fallen to their lowest in over three years," he added.
Talking about the impact on the country, he said, "We have a comparative advantage." Indicating that this is better than that of other countries.
<h2>More on Trump tariff:</h2>
Trump has been imposing tariffs on the left, right, and centre. This will affect goods worth millions of dollars entering the country. Will this add to the woes of Americans? So far, Trump has imposed taxes ranging from 10% to 49%; the latter is for 'worst offenders'. Canada and Mexico have currently been exempted from these scathing tariffs, though they, along with China, are already paying taxes on select products.
These tariffs have hit even on the world's remotest region &ndash; a place ruled by penguins, seals, and birds. Heard and McDonald Islands &ndash; the icy archipelago does not have a single human on the land. The last time people visited is believed to be about a decade ago.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday hailed the Supreme Court's "big ruling" for clearing the way for his administration to move further with the deportation of certain immigrants under the "Alien Enemies Act".&nbsp;
Trump might continue to use a 1978 law to deport alleged gang members to Venezuela, the US top court said, however, it will apply certain limits to it.&nbsp;
The Supreme Court's ruling included deporting alleged gang members under a wartime law dating back to 1798 called the "<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-targets-venezuela-gang-with-alien-enemies-act-of-1798-used-in-world-war-i-8857510">Alien Enemies Act</a>".

"Thanks to the Supreme Court yesterday and today, we had a big ruling, too,&rdquo; Trump said. &ldquo;We had a very big ruling today, but we will continue to deport these monsters under the Alien Enemies Act.&rdquo;
He further took to the Truth Social, saying "Last month, we officially designated Tren de Aragua, MS-13 and the Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations&mdash;and thanks to the Supreme Court yesterday... we will continue to deport these monsters under the Alien Enemies Act.&rdquo;

While reacting to the order, Trump posted, "The Supreme Court has upheld the Rule of Law in our Nation by allowing a President, whoever that may be, to be able to secure our Borders and protect our families and our Country, itself. A GREAT DAY FOR JUSTICE IN AMERICA!"&nbsp;
Trump on March 15 invoked the Aliens Enemies Act to deport alleged gang members of the Tren de Aragua gang.
The 18th-century law was used only when the country was at war. Trump created a buzz when he invoked the law - an aggressive and unprecedented use of presidential power.&nbsp;
The US officials flew 250 accused gang members to El Salvador, Trump's favourite prison.&nbsp;
At the El Salvador prison, the alleged criminals &mdash; including 238 members of Tren de Aragua and 23 MS-13 operatives &mdash; were met by heavily armed commandos, chained, and transferred to the infamous Terrorism Confinement Centre (CECOT).

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday hailed the Supreme Court's "big ruling" for clearing the way for his administration to move further with the deportation of certain immigrants under the "Alien Enemies Act". Trump might continue to use a 1978 law to deport alleged gang members to Venezuela, the US top court said, however, it will apply certain limits to it. The Supreme Court's ruling included deporting alleged gang members under a wartime law dating back to 1798 called the "Alien Enemies Act". Also read: Alien Enemies Act: Trump says 'GREAT DAY FOR JUSTICE' after US top court lifts order barring deportations "Thanks to the Supreme Court yesterday and today, we had a big ruling, too,” Trump said. “We had a very big ruling today, but we will continue to deport these monsters under the Alien Enemies Act.” He further took to the Truth Social, saying "Last month, we officially designated Tren de Aragua, MS-13 and the Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations—and thanks to the Supreme Court yesterday... we will continue to deport these monsters under the Alien Enemies Act.” Also read: 'Nazis got better treatment than Venezuelans' under Alien Enemies Act by Trump administration, says US court While reacting to the order, Trump posted, "The Supreme Court has upheld the Rule of Law in our Nation by allowing a President, whoever that may be, to be able to secure our Borders and protect our families and our Country, itself. A GREAT DAY FOR JUSTICE IN AMERICA!" Trump on March 15 invoked the Aliens Enemies Act to deport alleged gang members of the Tren de Aragua gang. The 18th-century law was used only when the country was at war. Trump created a buzz when he invoked the law - an aggressive and unprecedented use of presidential power. The US officials flew 250 accused gang members to El Salvador, Trump's favourite prison. At the El Salvador prison, the alleged criminals — including 238 members of Tren de Aragua and 23 MS-13 operatives — were met by heavily armed commandos, chained, and transferred to the infamous Terrorism Confinement Centre (CECOT). China trying to be friends with India again? Beijing asks India to 'stand together' amid Trump's tariffs

It was April 9, 2003 that changed the geopolitical realities of West Asia: on this day, Iraq's capital Baghdad fell to the US forces within a month after the US invaded Iraq. Who would forget the televised visuals of the toppling of the statue of Saddam Hussein in Baghdad's Firdos Square by the US forces?
While no 'weapons of mass destruction' were found in Iraq as claimed by then-US President George Bush, the war changed Iraq's contemporary political and social realities and America's position in West Asia. More than a decade later, the US-Iraq relations remain crucial amid larger regional complexities. The shadow of Saddam Hussein's reign has long gone but the US troops continue to be in the country "to support the mission against the Islamic State in northeastern Syria and in Iraq."
<h2>What happened in Iraq after&nbsp;Saddam Hussein's fall?</h2>
In May 2003, Paul Bremer, the head of the Coalition Provisional Authority, disbanded the Iraqi army and barred Iraq's Baath Party from participating in the government formation process. The decision alienated hundreds of Iraqis who had been part of the Baath Party out of compulsions under Saddam Hussein.&nbsp;

A new constitution was adopted in 2005 amid instability and Iraqis voted in the same year giving the Shia majority control of parliament. Under the new governing system, the prime minister was a member of the Shia Muslim majority, the president a Kurd and the speaker a Sunni.&nbsp;The first prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki ran the government for eight years with America as a partner of sorts. However, he fell out of favour in 2011 due to his close ties to Tehran. He faced strong Sunni rebellion and reportedly sought support from Shia-majority Iran and not the US. Nouri al-Maliki finally stepped down as prime minister in 2014 and Iraq got a new PM in Haider al-Abadi. Though, Washington and Tehran supported al-Abadi, tensions in Iraq remained and he faced similar Sunni opposition to that of Maliki. Subsequent governments in Iraq also couldn't deal with Iraq's complex politics amid the shadow of the US.

<h2>How the US-Iraq relations fared post-2003?</h2>
Iraq&rsquo;s relationship with the US has been governed by a series of framework accords. The first such document was the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). The agreement mandated the withdrawal of all US troops by the end of 2011. This process was completed under Barack Obama between 2009 to 2017. However, the vacuum created by the withdrawal of US troops amid political instability and sectarian conflicts eventually paved the way for a fertile ground for ISIS. US troops were once again back on Iraqi soil within only three years to fight ISIS which seized much of the north of the country. This time, the American presence came at the invitation of the Iraqi government and involved both combat and training missions.
Another agreement between Washington and Baghdad is the Strategic Framework Agreement (SFA) which outlines productive ties across sectors, including security, economic development, and health. The accord continues to be the foundation for the bilateral relationship between both the countries.

Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani became the prime minister of Iraq in 2022. Sudani is in the midst of massive internal turmoil and pressure from the Coordination Framework which has backed his leadership. However,&nbsp; analysts say that Al Sudani understands that the stability that Iraq has in troubled West Asia is because of the economic and security guarantees provided by the US.&nbsp;
US soldiers are still in Iraq. In December 2021, the coalition announced it had transitioned from a combat to an advisory role in Iraq.&nbsp;However, US forces have continued to participate in partnered raids in Iraq, the latest being in August 2024 in western Iraq targeting ISIS.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned that the United States would &ldquo;not allow&rdquo; China to exert influence over the Panama Canal. His remarks come during a visit to the Central American nation on Tuesday (Apr 8).
&ldquo;Today, the Panama Canal faces ongoing threats,&rdquo; Hegseth said in a speech at a police station located at the entry to the canal. &ldquo;The United States of America will not allow communist China or any other country to threaten the canal's operation or integrity.&rdquo;

Hegseth met with Panama President Jos&eacute; Ra&uacute;l Mulino before heading to a ribbon-cutting for a new US-financed dock at the Vasco Nu&ntilde;ez de Balboa Naval Base.

&ldquo;Our relationship is growing in part to meet Communist China&rsquo;s rising challenge,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;China-based companies continue to control critical infrastructure in the canal area. That gives China the potential to conduct surveillance activities across Panama. This makes Panama and the United States less secure, less prosperous and less sovereign. And as President Donald Trump has pointed out, that situation is not acceptable.&rdquo;
Although Hegseth did not many statements after leaving the meeting, he shared photos from their talks on X.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned that the United States would “not allow” China to exert influence over the Panama Canal. His remarks come during a visit to the Central American nation on Tuesday (Apr 8). “Today, the Panama Canal faces ongoing threats,” Hegseth said in a speech at a police station located at the entry to the canal. “The United States of America will not allow communist China or any other country to threaten the canal's operation or integrity.” Also read | Trump admin tells migrants who entered US via CBP One app to leave immediately Hegseth meets President José Raúl Mulino Hegseth met with Panama President José Raúl Mulino before heading to a ribbon-cutting for a new US-financed dock at the Vasco Nuñez de Balboa Naval Base. US ‘will not allow’ Chinese influence over Panama Canal: Defense Secretary Hegseth

The United States will slap a 104% tariff on Chinese goods starting from 12:01 AM Eastern Time (12:01 PM Beijing time) on Wednesday, according to a White House official. The move comes after China failed to remove its retaliatory tariffs on American products before a deadline set by Donald Trump for noon on Tuesday.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Donald Trump is taking a &ldquo;custom, tailor-made&rdquo; approach to trade with each country. That could include talks around military presence or foreign aid, depending on America&rsquo;s priorities.
&ldquo;Negotiations will be based on America&rsquo;s needs,&rdquo; she said.

&ldquo;These countries greatly respect President Trump in the sheer power of the American market. These countries realise they've gotten filthy rich by imposing substantial tariffs on American-made products,&rdquo; she said.
She also described Trump as having a &ldquo;spine of steel&rdquo; and insisted he would not back down in the face of retaliatory tariffs, including those from China.

In another Truth Social post from Monday, Trump had warned that if China did not roll back what he described as a &ldquo;34% increase above their already long term trading abuses&rdquo; by April 8, the US would respond with an additional 50% tariff, effective from April 9. He also said talks with China would be cancelled, and the US would immediately begin negotiations with other countries that had requested meetings.
&ldquo;Thank you for your attention to this matter!&rdquo; Trump added.

‘China wants a deal, badly’: Trump slaps 104% tariff after Beijing defies ultimatum, says 'waiting for their call'

Tesla CEO Elon Musk made direct appeals to US President Donald Trump over the weekend to lift the tariffs amid the rising tensions with US trade allies, according to a Washington Post report.
The report, citing two people familiar with the matter, said that confirmed Musk&rsquo;s attempted intervention has not brought success so far. On Monday (Apr 7), Trump threatened to impose additional 50 per cent tariffs on Chinese imports unless Beijing withdraws the 34 per cent retaliatory tariff on US goods. Although the US president mentioned that he was open to revising some aspects of the plan.

<h2>A divide between Musk and Trump?</h2>
The recent encounter between Trump and Musk appears to be the most significant disagreement, which comes after Trump announced sweeping reciprocal tariffs on dozens of nations.
Some analysts believe Musk&rsquo;s inability to persuade the US president highlights the growing divide between Trump and his top advisor.
The world&rsquo;s richest person has been sharing his views on tariffs through his social media. Recently, Musk posted a video of the late conservative economist Milton Friedman, who touted the benefits of international trade cooperation through what he referred to as &ldquo;the impersonal operation of prices&rdquo;, describing the source materials that make it possible to produce a simple wooden pencil as an example.

Musk and Trump growing apart? Billionaire tried to persuade US president to lift tariffs, report claims

Israeli Prime Minister <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/white-house-cancels-trump-netanyahu-press-conference-before-israeli-pms-arrival-8936890">Benjamin Netanyahu</a> has warned that military action against Iran could become unavoidable if ongoing talks between Washington and Tehran fail to produce results.
In a video statement released on Tuesday after meeting with US President Donald Trump, Netanyahu said, &ldquo;We agree that Iran will not have nuclear weapons. This can be done in an agreement, but only if... they go in, blow up (Iran's) facilities, dismantle all the equipment, under American supervision.&rdquo; He added, &ldquo;If talks drag on, then the military option becomes inevitable.&rdquo;
<h2>Trump confirms direct talks with Iran</h2>
Earlier on Monday, President Trump revealed that the US and Iran would hold direct negotiations on Saturday over a possible new nuclear agreement. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re having direct talks with Iran and they&rsquo;ve started, it'll go on Saturday. We have a very big meeting and we&rsquo;ll see what can happen,&rdquo; Trump said from the Oval Office.
Trump, during his first presidency, withdrew the US from the 2015 nuclear agreement during his first term, described the upcoming talks as being at a &ldquo;very high level&rdquo;. He added, &ldquo;Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and if the talks aren&rsquo;t successful, I actually think it'll be a very bad day for Iran.&rdquo;
<h2>Iran says talks will be indirect</h2>
Following Trump's announcement, Iran&rsquo;s foreign minister said that the negotiations set to take place in Oman would be &ldquo;indirect&rdquo;, but admitted that they could present &ldquo;as much an opportunity as... a test&rdquo;.
Iran has long claimed that its nuclear programme is peaceful. However, it has steadily increased its uranium enrichment since the US reinstated sanctions seven years ago. The country is now believed to have enough enriched uranium to build several nuclear weapons, according to recent assessments.
Netanyahu&rsquo;s comments follow his meeting with Trump at the White House, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to stopping Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Netanyahu has previously threatened military strikes against Iranian nuclear sites.
Trump said, &ldquo;I think everybody agrees that doing a deal would be preferable to doing the obvious. And the obvious is not something that I want to be involved with, or frankly that Israel wants to be involved with, if they can avoid it.&rdquo;
He added, &ldquo;But it's getting to be very dangerous territory, and hopefully those talks will be successful.&rdquo;

A deepening trade row with China could cost US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/blame-china-not-trump-piyush-goyal-says-beijings-malpractices-created-trade-imbalance-8940424">Donald Trump</a> more than he expected; it might threaten his dream aircraft, the F-47 fighter jet that's named after him.
<h2>Beijing hits back with rare earth restrictions</h2>
In response to Trump&rsquo;s decision to raise tariffs on most Chinese imports to 54%, Beijing has imposed new export controls on rare earth elements and key finished products. These materials are vital for advanced electronics, especially in military aircraft.
The move could deal a blow to the US defence industry, just weeks after Trump announced that Boeing had won the contract to build the F-47, a new fighter jet designed to replace the F-22 Raptor and form the core of the US Air Force&rsquo;s future fleet.

<h2>Rare Earths: The hidden weak spot</h2>
China controls around 90% of global rare earth production. These 17 elements are used in a range of industries, including defence, energy, electric vehicles, and electronics. For defence specifically, around 5% of US rare earth usage supports applications like radars, electric motors, and targeting systems.
The F-35 stealth jet, for example, needs about 920 pounds of rare earth materials per aircraft. These are essential in its advanced avionics, radar and flight control systems. The same will likely apply to the F-47.

<h2>What&rsquo;s being restricted?</h2>
China&rsquo;s new rules apply to seven types of medium and heavy rare earths, including samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, lutetium, scandium, and yttrium. The controls also cover finished goods such as permanent magnets.
Other strategic metals such as tungsten, tellurium, bismuth, molybdenum, and indium are also under export restrictions, according to the state-run Global Times.
Yttrium, in particular, is key for jet engine coatings, high-frequency radar, and lasers. It helps create thermal barriers on turbine blades, preventing engines from overheating during flight.
Although these measures are not a full ban, they limit export licenses, potentially creating shortages for US manufacturers who rely heavily on Chinese suppliers.
Industry insiders told Reuters that some US aerospace manufacturers are entirely dependent on Chinese sources for rare earths used in avionics. With China able to tighten supply at will, companies may struggle to find alternatives quickly.

<h2>What is China saying?</h2>
China&rsquo;s Ministry of Commerce defended the decision, saying, &ldquo;The Chinese government has implemented export controls on relevant items in accordance with the law in order to better safeguard national security and interests and fulfil international obligations such as non-proliferation.&rdquo;
This response shows that China is prepared to use its dominance in the rare earths market as a geopolitical tool, especially in the face of Trump&rsquo;s aggressive tariff policies.

‘Things are looking good’: Trump holds phone call with South Korea's acting president

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday (Apr 8) said that the US holds a substantial advantage over China as the two nations engage in a growing trade war.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I think it was a big mistake, this Chinese escalation, because they&rsquo;re playing with a pair of twos,&rdquo; Bessent told CNBC during an interview. &ldquo;What do we lose by the Chinese raising tariffs on us? <h2>Trump&rsquo;s reciprocal tariffs</h2>
Bessent&rsquo;s remarks come a day before the US is set to raise its levies on China and several other nations as part of the reciprocal tariffs. The duties will bring US trading allies to the negotiating table and jobs back to the US, said the treasury secretary.
He added that so far Japan has been at the forefront of nations willing to negotiate, and the White House expects many others as well.
