The United Nations General Assembly will be holding an urgent meeting next Monday regarding Russia’s annexation of four regions of Ukraine following referendums which were considered to be “shams” by western countries. A UN spokesperson announced on Monday that the member nations will be discussing a resolution regarding the annexation and their possible responses.

Sources told Reuters that the resolution is currently under preparation after Russia vetoed a condemnation of the move in the Security Council. According to General Assembly spokesperson Paulina Kubiak, the meeting was called at the request of Albania and Ukraine on October 10.

The referendums held in the four Ukrainian regions – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia – caused a lot of controversy in Europe as it was completely dismissed by the United States and other European countries. On the other hand, Russia claimed victory thanks to “huge number of votes”.

The annexation plan has already been ratified by the lower house of parliament in Russia – the State Duma – and the official announcement was also made by President Vladimir Putin. While Russia was able to veto any action against it in the security council, no such power will exist in the UNGA.

With the Ukraine-Russia crisis not showing any signs of slowing down, several countries have already expressed their concern regarding the referendums. Another major point put forward by a number of UN members has been the lack of control Russia exercises on the four annexed regions.

If it is passed, this will become the fourth resolution against the Russian invasion since April.

UN General Assembly to hold emergency meeting on Russian 'annexation' in Ukraine

Mahatma Gandhi made a 'historic appearance' at the United Nations, where he spoke on the value of education as the organisation marked the International Day of Non-Violence to commemorate the anniversary of the founding father of the country.

The General Assembly's decision in June 2007 created the International Day of Nonviolence. The occasion presents an opportunity to "disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness."

Gandhi's life-size hologram was on display for the occasion at the UN's New York headquarters on Friday during a panel discussion. The event was organised by the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development and India's Permanent Mission to the UN (MGIEP).

"Join us today for 5th Ahinsa/#NonViolence Lecture in Commemoration of #InternationalDayOfNonviolence featuring a life-size hologram of #MahatmaGandhi," tweeted Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj of India, who is also the permanent representative of India to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/live-putin-set-to-officially-annex-occupied-ukrainian-regions-at-official-event-today-521193">UN</a>.

Average world leader is a 59 years old man, reveals analysis of UNGA session data

India's&nbsp;external affairs minister (EAM) Dr S&nbsp;Jaishankar on Saturday addressed the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and batted for reforms, especially at the high table of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).&nbsp;

"The call for reformed multilateralism – with reforms of the Security Council at its core enjoys considerable support among UN members," said Jaishankar.

The Indian external affairs minister did not mince words and stated that the current setup of the UN was&nbsp;anachronistic and ineffective&nbsp;and hence needed urgent reforms.

"It does so because of the widespread recognition that the current architecture is anachronistic and ineffective. It is also perceived as deeply unfair, denying entire continents and regions a voice in a forum that deliberates their future," Jaishankar said in his address.&nbsp;

The EAM also reminded the assembly of New Delhi's capabilities by stating, "India would be completing its tenure as a member of the Security Council this year. In our term, we have acted as a bridge on some serious but divisive issues confronting the Council."

It is not the first time that India has raised the issue. However, according to Jaishankar, something has shifted this time around.&nbsp;

"In respect of UN reform, every General Assembly (session) you revisit that issue, but this time something has shifted. You can see that, you can sense that. I think everybody sensed a shift and it's something which others actually brought up with me," the minister told reporters.&nbsp;

Earlier this week, Jaishankar hosted a meeting of the G4 countries, a grouping that includes Japan, Germany and Brazil seeking a permanent seat at the Security Council.&nbsp;

After the meeting, Jaishakar took to Twitter and set the agenda which he reiterated at the UNGA address on Saturday.&nbsp;

“Reiterated our joint commitment to work towards text based negotiations that lead to reformed multilateralism. Will continue our cooperation towards the goal,” he tweeted.&nbsp;

One of the biggest roadblocks to India's accession to a permanent seat in the UNSC is China. The neighbouring country of India has shown rhetorical commitment toward reforms at the UN but behind the scenes, Beijing has actively worked to ensure that the status quo is maintained.&nbsp;

Thus, New Delhi has its task cut out. However, India's stint in the Security Council in the&nbsp;last year-and-a-half ought to bring some much-needed change.

Indian diplomat Mijito Vinito has slammed Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after the latter's address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for raking the Kashmir issue and making anti-India remarks.

Indian diplomat Mijito Vinito has slammed Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after the latter's address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for raking the Kashmir issue and making anti-India remarks. In his right to reply, Mijito Vinito, first secretary, Indian Mission to United Nations, said, "It is regrettable that the Prime Minister of Pakistan has chosen the platform of this august assembly to make false accusations against India." "He has done so to obfuscate misdeeds in his own country and to justify actions against India that the world considers unacceptable," said Vinito. Notably, Pakistan PM Shehbaz while addressing the general assembly had mentioned Kashmir more than 10 times and India more than nine times. Pakistani PMs in the past have used the famous green podium during the annual general assembly to rake up Kashmir, something that hasn't come as a surprise this time as well. Indian diplomat Mijito, raising the issue of Pakistan's support for terror, said, "A polity that claims it seeks peace with its neighbours would never sponsor cross border terrorism." He pointed out how Islamabad continues to "shelter planners of the horrific Mumbai terrorist attack, disclosing their existence only under pressure from the international community". Read more: At UNSC, EAM Jaishankar slams China for putting hold on listing of Pakistan-based terrorist Terror remains a key concern for New Delhi when it comes to Pakistan. As a policy, on multiple occasions, New Delhi has stated that no talks will happen unless Islamabad takes action against terrorism. The first secretary also highlighted the situation of minorities in the country, saying, "When young women in the thousands from the minority community are abducted as an SOP, what can we conclude about the underlying mindset?" Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, and Ahmadiyya's continue to face prosecution and discrimination in Pakistan, which has been well documented "Desire for peace, security and progress in the Indian subcontinent is real but that will surely happen when cross-border terrorism ceases and when governments come clean with the international community and their own people. When minorities are not persecuted and not least, when we recognise these realities before this assembly," the Indian diplomat concluded by saying. Addressing the Council briefing were UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs James Cleverly and Foreign Ministers of other UNSC members. Jaishankar told the Council that in a globalised world, the impact of the conflict is being felt even in distant regions. On Wednesday, Jaishankar met Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal at the UN headquarters here and apprised him of India's principled position that emphasises cessation of all hostilities and return to dialogue and diplomacy.

British Prime Minister Liz Truss accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of “sabre rattling” and said that the nuclear threats were just an attempt on his part to justify the “catastrophic” failure in Ukraine.&nbsp;

"He is doubling down by sending even more reservists to a terrible fate. He is desperately trying to claim the mantle of democracy for a regime without human rights or freedoms. And he is making yet more bogus claims and sabre rattling threats,"&nbsp;she was quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;

United Nations Secretary Antonio Guterres has urged countries around the world to impose some form of “windfall taxes” on fossil fuel companies. During the UN general assembly, he said that the money should then be distributed among nations which are suffering from major climate crisis.

In a speech that outlined a number of environmental issues plaguing the planet, Guterres said that the “polluters must pay” for the damage caused by natural disasters in a number of countries.

“Today, I am calling on all developed economies to tax the windfall profits of fossil fuel companies,” Guterres said in a speech to the UN general assembly on Tuesday, according to AFP.

According to the plan put forward by Guterres, the revenue that will be generated from the taxes can be used for getting early warning systems and provisions for countries who are generally prone to major natural disasters. He described it as a “climate-related and justice-based” global tax.

“Let’s have no illusions. We are in rough seas. A winter of global discontent is on the horizon, a cost-of-living crisis is raging, trust is crumbling, inequalities are exploding, and our planet is burning,” he told the assembly. “We have a duty to act and yet we are gridlocked in colossal global dysfunction. ‘Polluters must pay’: UN chief urges countries to impose tax on fossil fuel companies

One person is dying of hunger every four seconds, warned over 200 NGOs in an open letter to world leaders gathering in New York for United Nations General Assembly.&nbsp;

238 NGOs from 75 countries have taken the initiative to sound the bell for global policymakers. The list includes NGOs like Oxfam, Save the Children and Plan International. The NGOs expressed outrage at skyrocketing levels of hunger globally.

"A staggering 345 million people are now experiencing acute hunger, a number that has more than doubled since 2019," they said in a statement.

"Despite promises from world leaders to never allow famine again in the 21st century, famine is once more imminent in Somalia. Around the world, 50 million people are on the brink of starvation in 45 countries," they said.

The NGOs pointed out that an estimated 19,700 people were dying of hunger every day. This translates to one person dying every four seconds.

"It is abysmal that with all the technology in agriculture and harvesting techniques today we are still talking about famine in the 21st century," Mohanna Ahmed Ali Eljabaly from the Yemen Family Care Association, one of the letter's signatories, said in the statement.

"This is not about one country or one continent and hunger never only has one cause. This is about the injustice of the whole of humanity," he said.

"We must not wait a moment longer to focus both on providing immediate lifesaving food and longer-term support so people can take charge of their futures and provide for themselves and their families."

A person is dying every four seconds due to hunger: NGOs

Bringing the country in accord with global biodiversity targets, nearly a third of China's land is now off-limits to development under a scheme known as the "ecological protection red line".

In order to put an end to decades of "irrational development" that had encroached on forests, wetlands and other precious ecosystems, China first proposed its "red line" scheme in 2011.

According to China's vice-national resources minister Zhuang Shaoqin, the establishment of national parks and the restoration of ecosystems have now helped bring the total area under protection to more than 30 per cent of the country's territory.

Supported by more than 100 countries to protect at least 30 per cent&nbsp;of the earth's land and ocean areas by 2030, the figure is in line with a target recommended by the United Nations.

China will discuss the target during talks on a new global biodiversity pact that will lead and is set to take place in Montreal in December.

With some also cracking down on farmers for illegally expanding plantations onto protected land, Chinese authorities have been demolishing houses, workshops and hydropower plants in order to meet their own local "red line" targets.

While Chinese governments are still authorised to redraw "red lines" if they interfere with major development projects,, critics say the enforcement of the scheme has remained uneven.

From the cultivation and logging of commercial forests to the exploration of mineral resources, some human activities have still been permitted inside the red line zones.

With pollution and habitat destruction still not fully under control, China also acknowledged earlier this year that its marine ecosystems remained in relatively poor health.

Humanity is "going in the wrong direction" on climate change due to its addiction to&nbsp;fossil&nbsp;fuels, the UN said Tuesday in an assessment showing that planet-warming emissions are higher than before the pandemic.

The UN's World Meteorological Organization and its Environment Programme warned catastrophes will become commonplace should the world economy fail to decarbonise in line with what science says is needed to prevent the worst impacts of global heating.

They pointed to Pakistan's monumental floods and China's crop-withering heatwave this year as examples of what to expect.

"Floods, droughts, heatwaves, extreme storms and wildfires are going from bad to worse, breaking records with alarming frequency," said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.&nbsp;

The UN warned last month that the drought gripping the Horn of Africa and threatening millions with acute food shortages was now likely to extend into a fifth year.

"There is nothing natural about the new scale of these disasters. They are the price of humanity's&nbsp;fossil&nbsp;fuel addiction," said Guterres.

The UN's United in Science report underscores how, nearly three years since Covid-19 handed governments a unique opportunity to reassess how to power their economies, countries are ploughing ahead with pollution as normal.&nbsp;

It found that after an unprecedented 5.4 percent fall in emissions in 2020 due to lockdowns and travel restrictions, preliminary data from January-May this year shows global CO2 emissions are 1.2 percent higher than before Covid-19.

This is largely down to large year-on-year increases in the United States, India, and most European countries, the assessment found.&nbsp;

"The science is unequivocal: we are going in the wrong direction," said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.

"Greenhouse gas concentrations are continuing to rise, reaching new record highs.&nbsp;Fossil&nbsp;fuel emission rates are now above pre-pandemic levels. The past seven years were the warmest on record."

'Uncharted territory'&nbsp;

Last week the European Union's Copernicus climate monitor said that summer 2022 was the hottest in Europe and one of the hottest globally since records began in the 1970s.&nbsp;

Tuesday's report said there was a 93 per cent chance that the record for the hottest year globally -- currently, 2016 -- will be broken within five years.

It warned the continued use of&nbsp;fossil&nbsp;fuels meant the chance of the annual mean global temperature temporarily exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels in one of the next five years was roughly even (48 per cent).&nbsp;

Keeping longer-term temperatures below 1.5C is the most ambitious goal of the 2015 Paris Agreement.&nbsp;

Despite more than three decades of UN-lead negotiations, rich polluters show little sign of being willing to make the kind of swingeing emissions cuts that would keep the 1.5C goal in play.&nbsp;

The UN's Environment Programme, in an update to its annual "emissions gap" assessment following new pledges made at last November's COP26 summit in Glasgow, said Tuesday that even these promises were far from adequate.

In fact, it said the ambition even in countries' most recent pledges would need to be four times greater to limit warming to 2C, and seven times higher to make 1.5C.

All told, current worldwide climate policies put Earth on course to warm 2.8C by 2100, UNEP said.&nbsp;

Guterres said that Tuesday's assessment showed "climate impacts heading into uncharted territory of destruction".&nbsp;

"Yet each year we double-down on this&nbsp;fossil&nbsp;fuel addiction, even as the symptoms get rapidly worse," he said in a video message.

Tasneem Essop, executive director of Climate Action Network, said that the forthcoming COP27 climate conference in Egypt needed leaders to agree to new funding to help communities in at-risk nations rebuild after extreme events.

"The terrifying picture painted by the United in Science report is already a lived reality for millions of people facing&nbsp;recurring climate disasters," she said.

World going in 'wrong direction' due to addiction to fossil fuels, will worsen climate impact: UN

Slavery is a scourge in human history, where people were held by someone else or treated as their property without the privileges of a "free person". Surely this menace doesn't exist in the modern world, does it? According&nbsp;to the United Nations, it does and it is called "modern slavery".

The UN's International Labour Organization (ILO) announced Monday that 50 million people worldwide are subject to forced labour or forced marriage, and warned that the number of these people has substantially increased in recent years.

AFP reports that as per the new report, despite the United Nations' 2030 deadline to end all forms of modern slavery, the number of individuals subjected to forced labour or forced marriage increased by 10 million between 2016 and 2021.

The most recent statistics show that in 2021, there were 27.6 million people who were forced into forced labour, more than 3.3 million of whom are children, and 22 million who were forced into forced marriage. That means that almost one in every 150 individuals worldwide is a victim of modern-day slavery.

One in five people who are compelled to work are children, and the survey stated that more than half of them are engaged in commercial sexual exploitation.

The most vulnerable groups are by far women and children as per the report. It also issued a warning that this is a persistent issue because estimates show that forced labour can last for years and forced marriage is frequently "a life sentence."

According to the ILO, migrant workers were more than three times more likely to experience forced labour than domestic workers, with more than half of all cases occurring in upper-middle-income or high-income nations.

In the lead-up to the FIFA soccer World Cup, which begins in November, Qatar was mentioned in the report. The nation is under fire for allegedly violating labour laws in relation to migrants working there.

"Nothing can justify the persistence of this fundamental abuse of human rights," said Guy Ryder, head of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

It's 21st century and yet 50 million people across the world are still bound in 'modern slavery': UN

The Kurdish administration in northern and eastern Syria&nbsp;announced on Saturday that three people had died from cholera and appealed for outside assistance to stop the outbreak.

Health officials issued a warning about "a substantial number of cholera cases in Raqa province and the western countryside of Deir Ezzor province."

Diarrhea and vomiting are common symptoms of cholera, which is typically spread by tainted water or food. It can spread in residential areas without sufficient sewage systems or main water supplies.

The Kurdish government requested assistance from foreign organisations, "particularly the World Health Organization," to stop the spread of cholera.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Syrian health ministry also disclosed 15 cases of cholera in Aleppo province, which is largely under government control.

They are now receiving medical care in a hospital, it stated.

The disease had spread to western Deir Ezzor, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, after local officials stopped adding chlorine to water pumping stations.

The British monitoring group, which has a large network of sources in Syria, reported that hundreds of locals were reportedly experiencing headaches, diarrhoea, and vomiting.

The Deir Ezzor water authority has begun distributing 1,000 litres (264 gallons) of chlorine to water stations in rural areas of the province, the Kurdish administration said.

Syria's water supply and sewage facilities have been destroyed by a civil conflict that has lasted more than ten years.

According to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the war has damaged two thirds of water treatment plants, half of pumping stations, and one third of water towers nationwide.

According to UNICEF, about 50% of the population relies on alternate, frequently dangerous water sources, and at least 70% of sewage is not treated.

For the first time since 2015, cholera outbreaks this summer in neighbouring Iraq.

United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in its recent report has painted a grim picture of the workforce in the region. The report states that two-thirds of Asia-Pacific's workforce, 1.

United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in its recent report has painted a grim picture of the workforce in the region. The report states that two-thirds of Asia-Pacific's workforce, 1.4 billion to be precise, is meandering on the verge of poverty by surviving on only $5.5 per day. The report, released at the seventh session of the Committee on Social Development also added that more than half the region's population is excluded from any social protection. “Our region spends less than half of the global average on social protection. Almost 60 per cent of the population has no social protection coverage against normal life events such as pregnancy, child-raising, sickness, disability, unemployment or simply getting old,” said Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, executive secretary of ESCAP. Read more: Why is China so angry over UN report on Xinjiang? The vulnerability due to lack of social protection has far-reaching consequences. 85 million unprotected people have been pushed into extreme poverty, only managing on less than a meagre income of $1.9 per day. Meanwhile, 158 million of this class have plunged into moderate poverty, surviving on $3.2 a day. According to the report, Asia-Pacific's labour productivity has fallen below the global average. "During the pandemic, the lack of affordable health care and social protection contributed to pushing 243 million people into poverty," added the report. The report also took into measure the climate change the Asia-Pacific region was witnessing and its effect on the labour class. "The region is highly exposed to climate-induced natural disasters with detrimental welfare consequences for workers, as jobs disappear and businesses relocate." The workers in the informal sector, especially in the agriculture sector, constituting one-third of the labour force were the most vulnerable group due to climate change. To protect such class of citizens across the region, UNESCAP, on the sidelines of the meeting launched a Social Protection Online Toolbox (SPOT) that will help countries to broaden the social protection net for them. 1.4 billion workforce in Asia-Pacific surviving only on $5.5 or less: UN Report

Why is China so angry over UN report on Xinjiang?

Ahead of the 27th International Climate Conference, India has reiterated its commitment to adopt a climate-friendly and cleaner path to combat climate change.&nbsp;

Recently, India’s environment ministry submitted its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) on climate change under the Paris Agreement to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) recently, in which it listed out several goals.&nbsp;

India has updated three out of eight NDCs. One of them is reducing emissions intensity of its GDP by 45 percent by 2030, from 2005 level.&nbsp;

India said that it will “put forward and further propagate a healthy and sustainable way of living based on traditions and values of conservation and moderation, including through a mass movement for ‘LIFE’– ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ as a key to combating climate change.”&nbsp;

The third update is to achieve about 50 per cent cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030, with the help of transfer of technology and low-cost international finance including from Green Climate Fund (GCF).&nbsp;

“This update to India’s existing NDC is a step forward towards our long-term goal of reaching net-zero by 2070,” Indian government said while reaffirming its commitment to the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement on climate change.&nbsp;

India made the updates to the NDCs which were last submitted to the UNFCCC in 2015, for the period up to 2030.&nbsp;

Other NDCs include adopting a climate-friendly and a cleaner path than the one followed hitherto by others at corresponding level of economic development; creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tons of CO2 equivalent through additional forest and tree cover by 2030; mobilizing domestic and new and additional funds from developed countries to implement the above mitigation and adaptation actions in view of the resource required and the resource gap.&nbsp;

India also aims to better adapt to climate change by enhancing investments in development programmes in sectors vulnerable to climate change, particularly agriculture, water resources, Himalayan region, coastal regions, health and disaster management. &nbsp;

“To build capacities, create domestic framework and international architecture for quick diffusion of cutting-edge climate technology in India and for joint collaborative R&amp;D for such future technologies,” is another NDC of India. &nbsp;

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in COP26 in Glasgow announced that the country will become net zero by 2070.&nbsp;

Recently, former United Nations General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon had said that 2070 is too far and that India should aim to become net-zero by 2050.&nbsp;

Indian government says, “India’s NDC is ambitious, and it is a significant contribution towards achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement. Environmentally sustainable, low carbon initiatives are underpinning all key sectors of the Indian economy.”&nbsp;

UNFCCC COP27 is scheduled to be held in November this year in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.&nbsp;

US: UN diplomat accused of raping a woman. He was arrested but released after claiming immunity

In a clear message to China at the United Nations Security Council, India called on countries to respect territorial integrity and various pacts that have been signed. India's Permanent Representative to United Nations Ruchira Kamboj said that the "underlying principles behind common security" is "premised upon respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all Member States" and "any coercive or unilateral action that seeks to change the status quo by force is an affront to common security."&nbsp;

Ties between India and China have nosedived after the 2020 Galwan aggression by the Chinese military in eastern Ladakh. The aggression lead to the death of 20 Indian soldiers, and while China also suffered casualties, only after much delay it accepted casualty count of four.&nbsp;

The Indian envoy to UN explained "common security is only possible when countries respect each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as they would expect their own sovereignty to be respected." China has indulged in military action at the Line of Actual Control in the past, including the 2017 Doklam incident in which it tried to build a road on Bhutanese territory.&nbsp;

Ambassador Ruchira Khamboj pointed that "common security is also possible only if countries respect agreements signed with others, bilateral or multilateral, and do not take unilateral measures to nullify those very arrangements to those they were party to". During the current Indo-China crisis, New Delhi has several times highlighted that it is due to Beijing not respecting the 1996 and 1993 border pacts that called for not amassing troops at the border.&nbsp;

The Indian envoy's address had a message for Pakistan as well on the issue of terrorism mentioning that "common security is also only feasible when all countries stand together against common threats such as terrorism and do not engage in double standards while preaching otherwise". The address was made at a UNSC meet on "maintenance of International Peace and Security' which was the key signature event under Chinese presidency of the council.&nbsp;

A substantial focus of the speech of the Indian envoy was on the reforms of the UNSC. She said,"a truly representative Security Council is the most pressing need of the hour" warning that there is a "real danger of the United Nations being superseded by other plurilateral and multilateral groupings which are more representative, more transparent and more democratic and, therefore, more effective."&nbsp;

UN and its key body UNSC are seen as dysfunctional amid rise of other groupings like the G20, BRICS, SCO. The ambassador said, "In my country, which now represents more than 1/6th of humanity, we believe that until we reform, perform and transform multilateral governance structures, we would be found wanting".&nbsp;

The travel ban exemptions for 13 Taliban officials ended on Friday after the United Nations failed to achieve consensus on possible extension. Thirteen Taliban officials were given exemptions from travel ban to enable them to take part in negotiations and meet foreign officials abroad. These 13 officials were among 135 Taliban officials who were subject to sanctions as per a 2011 UN Security resolution.

In June, the 15-member UN Security Council's Afghanistan Sanctions Committee removed two Taliban education ministers from the exemption list over the regime's curtailment of women's rights.

At that time exemptions for others were renewed until August 19. An extension of a month was possible if no member objected but AFP, quoting diplomatic sources, said that Ireland objected last week.

China and Russia were in favour of an extension.&nbsp;

China and Russia were in favour of an extension. Travel ban exemptions for Taliban officials end, no consensus in UN for extension

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday (August 20) inspected a grain ship anchored off Turkish coast. A boat took the secretary general from Istanbul to the grain ship. The ship was chartered by the United Nations to transport Ukrainian grain on the southern shores of Istanbul.

Ukraine, a leading producer of foodgrains&nbsp;has been under attack from Russia since February 24 this year. The invasion created obstacles in the path of grain export from Ukraine raising the spectre of global food crisis. But a deal was brokered by the UN and Turkey between Ukraine and Russia that resulted in agreement for safe passage for grain ships from and to Ukraine.

The agreement also guarantees Russia a right to sell fertilisers and agricultural products despite western sanctions. Guterres said that Russian fertilisers and agricultural products should be able to reach global markets 'unimpeded'. He warned of a global food crisis next year should this not happen.

"It is important that all governments and the private sector cooperate to bring them to market," he said from the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC).

The JCC oversees the implementation of the Ukrainian grain export agreement signed in July by Kyiv and Moscow.

"What we see here in Istanbul and in Odessa is only the more visible part of the solution. The other part of this package deal is the unimpeded access to the global markets of Russian food and fertiliser, which are not subject to sanctions," Guterres said, adding that despite this, Russian fertiliser and agricultural exports still faced "obstacles."

"Without fertiliser in 2022, there may not be enough food in 2023. Getting more food and fertiliser out of Ukraine and Russia is crucial to further calm commodity markets and lower prices for consumers," he said. &nbsp;

UN chief inspects Ukraine grain ship off the coast of Turkey

A report by an independent UN expert has concluded that the minorities have been drafted into forced labour in China's Xinjiang region. They are forced into the manufacturing and agriculture sectors.&nbsp;

Some Western countries have accused China of human rights violations in the Xinjiang region against the Uyghur Muslims, which China has repeatedly denied. The US has even accused China of mass detention, torture, forced labour and genocide in Xinjiang.&nbsp;

As released on Tuesday (August 16), the report by UN special rapporteur on modern slavery Tomoya Obokata pointed to two "distinct state-mandated systems" in China.&nbsp;

The report highlights that forced labour has occurred, citing think tank and NGO reports as well as victims.&nbsp;

One of the two distinct state-mandated systems is a vocational skills education and training centre system. In this, the minorities are detained and subject to work placements. &nbsp;

Meanwhile, another one involves attempts to reduce poverty through labour transfer, in which rural workers are moved into "secondary or tertiary work".

The report said, "While these programmes may create employment opportunities for minorities and enhance their incomes... the special rapporteur considers that indicators of forced labour pointing to the involuntary nature of work rendered by affected communities have been present in many cases."&nbsp;

As per the report, the nature and extent of powers exercised over the workers include excessive surveillance and abusive living and working conditions.&nbsp;

The report further stated that it could "amount to enslavement as a crime against humanity, meriting a further independent analysis."&nbsp;

In response, China's foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin on Wednesday accused Obokata of "choosing to believe lies and disinformation fabricated by the US... as well as anti-China forces".&nbsp;

Minorities drafted into forced labour, possible 'enslavement' in China's Xinjiang: UN expert

The UN's new special envoy for Myanmar began meetings with top junta officials on Wednesday but did not respond to questions about whether she would seek to meet ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Noeleen Heyzer's visit to the crisis-wracked country, which began on Tuesday, "will focus on addressing the deteriorating situation and immediate concerns as well as other priority areas of her mandate," the UN has said.

Heyzer did not respond to AFP questions on whether she would meet Suu Kyi on Wednesday as she left her hotel in a motorcade escorted by police and plainclothes security forces.

Suu Kyi, 77, has been detained since the military's coup and on Monday received another prison term in a secretive junta court -- raising her total sentence to 17 years.

Heyzer was set to meet the junta's foreign affairs minister and chief Min Aung Hlaing later on Wednesday, spokesman Zaw Min Tun told a press conference.

"We are hoping to get good results (from the meeting)" he said.

Myanmar has been embroiled in turmoil since the military seized power in February 2021, prompting fierce resistance and spawning informal militias.&nbsp;

Over 2,200 people have been killed and over 15,000 arrested in the military's crackdown on dissent, according to a local monitoring group.

Diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis led by the UN and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations regional bloc have made little headway, with the generals refusing to engage with opponents.

Last month the junta triggered renewed international condemnation when it executed Phyo Zeya Thaw, a former lawmaker from Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party, for offences under anti-terrorism laws.

Singaporean sociologist Heyzer was appointed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres last year, replacing Swiss diplomat Christine Schraner Burgener.

Schraner Burgener had called for the UN to take "very strong measures" against the military and was the target of regular broadsides in Myanmar's state-backed media.

Military leaders blocked her from visiting the country, where she had hoped to meet with Suu Kyi.

In December state media reported the junta had closed her Myanmar office, saying her work in Myanmar had "concluded".

There have been no reports in state media about whether Heyzer will be allowed to open an office in the country.

Rights groups said they had little optimism her visit would persuade the military to end its bloody crackdown and engage in dialogue with opponents of its coup.

"UN envoys have visited when the military told them to, stayed where the military told them to, met who the military arranged for them to meet and then left when the military told them to," tweeted Mark Farmaner, director of the Burma Campaign UK.

United Nations Myanmar envoy begins talks with junta chief

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday (August 1) said that a small misunderstanding can cause nuclear annihilation of humanity. His words came as the US, Britain and France urged Russia to stop "its dangerous nuclear rhetoric and behaviour." Guterres was talking at the time of opening of a key Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty conference in New York. UN secretary general warned that world faced &nbsp;"a nuclear danger not seen since the height of the Cold War."

He mentioned Russia's invasion of Ukraine, tensions on the Korean peninsula and in West Asia and said that crises "with nuclear undertones" could escalate.

"Today, humanity is just one misunderstanding, one miscalculation away from nuclear annihilation," Guterres told the 10th review conference of the NPT, an international treaty that came into force in 1970 to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.

"We have been extraordinarily lucky so far. But luck is not a strategy. Nor is it a shield from geopolitical tensions boiling over into nuclear conflict," he added, calling on nations to "put humanity on a new path towards a world free of nuclear weapons."

The meeting is being held at UN headquarters in New York it will run till August 26. The meeting was postponed several times since 2020 due to Covid pandemic. Guterres said that the conference was "a chance to strengthen" the treaty and "make it fit for the worrying world around us."

"Eliminating nuclear weapons is the only guarantee they will never be used," the secretary-general implored, adding that he would visit Hiroshima for the anniversary of the August 6, 1945 atomic bombing of the Japanese city by the United States.

"Almost 13,000 nuclear weapons are now being held in arsenals around the world. All this at a time when the risks of proliferation are growing and guardrails to prevent escalation are weakening," Guterres added.

"During this incident, soldiers from the intervention brigade of the MONUSCO force returning from leave opened fire at the border post for unexplained reasons and forced their way through," the UN mission in Kasindi said in a statement. "This serious incident caused loss of life and serious injuries."

Kasindi has been a volatile area for quite some time and UN forces have been observing peace in the region since 1999. In 2010, UN went on to form the peacekeeping mission MONUSCO — the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The forces have not been received warmly by the locals as they continue to hold demonstrations in protest. The presence of an offensive force has stoked the fears in the local population since over the years, over 200 people have lost their lives in clashes.

Two dead as UN peacekeepers open fire in Democratic Republic of Congo

The world affairs were progressing normally till the COVID pandemic and Ukraine-Russian conflict shattered the dynamics of geopolitics.
&nbsp;
The pandemic put severe stress on all nations as fingers were pointed at China for the origin of the virus which claimed millions of lives. The subsequent developments led to a shift in geo-politics and led to the demand for UN reforms and more accountability.&nbsp;

China’s aggression on Hong Kong and Taiwan and its border clashes with India further exposed chinks in the world order. India adopted a tough stance that reflected in the Galwan clash and resisted consistent pressure to take sides in the Russia-Ukrainian war and kept abstaining from voting against Russia while reiterating that the war needs to stop.&nbsp;

Strategic readjustments in geopolitics

The deepening partnership between India and the US created a robust power dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region to keep a check on China.&nbsp;

Besides, India’s regular engagements with France, Germany, Britain helped it strengthen its ties in the west.
For a long time, India was seen as a nation with huge consumer base but it is now seen as an influencing power.

The European way

India’s relations with Europe are also undergoing a change and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) will open the gateway to Latvia and the Baltic region and provide seamless connectivity.&nbsp;
The proposed INSTC crosses Iran (through Chabahar), Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, via central Asia to Russia and then finally to Europe and will double the cargo speed as compared to the current Suez Canal route.&nbsp;

India had been eyeing market in Baltic nations for long but the long sea route had been a hindrance.&nbsp;
The ongoing greenfield Rail Baltica project will connect the Baltic States to the existing European rail network, by linking Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania with Poland and from there with the European rail network, further enhancing trade opportunities and ties.

Besides, India and European nations are collaborating in the field of science and technology, marine research, and artificial intelligence.

West Asia consensus

India also has strategic, economic relations with nations in the Gulf region, including reliance for energy security. Countries in West Asia are diversifying their economies and opening new areas of engagement and India is keen on increasing trade ties.

African axis

India-Africa relations, both economic &amp; cultural, date back to the pre-colonial era and were strengthened during the national independence movement due to the success of M K Gandhi’s non-violent methods.&nbsp;
India started engaging actively with African nations from 2014 onwards, as a result of which it opened 18 new Indian Missions in Africa.

India had announced a line of credit to finance capacity building, IT education, and higher education projects in African countries.&nbsp;

Indian Navy’s 2021 Maritime Strategy document and the African Union’s 2050 Africa Integrated Maritime Strategy (AIMS 2050) aim for a free and open Indian ocean for the benefit of all nations and can be a game-changer in the region.

Russia beyond defence

Ties between India and Russia had waned since the USSR split, but in the past two years, both countries set out to correct them and are ramping up economic ties.&nbsp;

The China conundrum
&nbsp;
For the last 6-7 years, the Indian Ocean region has been the centre of tussle between India and China. India came up with its necklace of diamonds strategy to counter to counter China’s string of pearls scheme.
Two-thirds of the world’s oil, a third of the bulk cargo and half of all container traffic travel through IOR, that’s the reason why it’s important to expand India’s reach.&nbsp;
India wants peace and stability in the Indian Ocean since it is vital for its economic transformation and has been improving relations with Vietnam, Mauritius and other nations in the region to counter the growing Chinese influence.

Island connect

India has also been increasing interaction with island states under Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Pacific Island Forum (PIF) which contribute for more than 40 members at the UN. Their impact on voting in the UN and other multilateral forums draws even major powers to these island states. India has also pledged financial support to each island country and is increasing cultural and people to people connections with these nations.

Under its Neighbourhood First Policy, India has been supplying power to Bangladesh and Nepal while championing a South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation electricity grid. Besides, India has been liberal in extending aid to its neighbours whenever required.
India must work to a well thought out strategy to achieve its well-deserved place in the emerging world order.

The European way India’s relations with Europe are also undergoing a change and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) will open the gateway to Latvia and the Baltic region and provide seamless connectivity. The proposed INSTC crosses Iran (through Chabahar), Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, via central Asia to Russia and then finally to Europe and will double the cargo speed as compared to the current Suez Canal route. India had been eyeing market in Baltic nations for long but the long sea route had been a hindrance. West Asia consensus India also has strategic, economic relations with nations in the Gulf region, including reliance for energy security. Countries in West Asia are diversifying their economies and opening new areas of engagement and India is keen on increasing trade ties. African axis India-Africa relations, both economic & cultural, date back to the pre-colonial era and were strengthened during the national independence movement due to the success of M K Gandhi’s non-violent methods. India started engaging actively with African nations from 2014 onwards, as a result of which it opened 18 new Indian Missions in Africa. India had announced a line of credit to finance capacity building, IT education, and higher education projects in African countries. Indian Navy’s 2021 Maritime Strategy document and the African Union’s 2050 Africa Integrated Maritime Strategy (AIMS 2050) aim for a free and open Indian ocean for the benefit of all nations and can be a game-changer in the region. Russia beyond defence Ties between India and Russia had waned since the USSR split, but in the past two years, both countries set out to correct them and are ramping up economic ties. The China conundrum For the last 6-7 years, the Indian Ocean region has been the centre of tussle between India and China. India came up with its necklace of diamonds strategy to counter to counter China’s string of pearls scheme. Two-thirds of the world’s oil, a third of the bulk cargo and half of all container traffic travel through IOR, that’s the reason why it’s important to expand India’s reach. India wants peace and stability in the Indian Ocean since it is vital for its economic transformation and has been improving relations with Vietnam, Mauritius and other nations in the region to counter the growing Chinese influence. Island connect India has also been increasing interaction with island states under Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Pacific Island Forum (PIF) which contribute for more than 40 members at the UN. India emerging as ‘influencing power’ in new world order

The International Court of Justice (ICJ), United Nations' highest court ruled on Friday (July 22) that Rohingya genocide case against military-ruled Myanmar can go ahead. ICJ in The Hague has rejected all objections from Myanmar to a case filed by west African nation of Gambia. The case was filed in 2019. The decision means that full hearings can take place at the court over Myanmar's violent crackdown on the Rohingya.

ICJ president Joan Donoghue said the tribunal "finds that it has jurisdiction... to entertain the application filed by the republic of the Gambia, and that the said application is admissible".

Five years ago, Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims fled Myanmar to escape the crackdown. There were reports of murder, arson and rape.

Around 850,000 Rohingya are languishing in camps in neighbouring Bangladesh while another 600,000 Rohingya remain in Myanmar's southwestern Rakhine state.

At ICJ initially, Myanmar was represented by Nobel laureate and former leader Aung San Suu Kyi. However, her regime was toppled last year by Myanmar military.

Mainly-Muslim Gambia filed the case in November 2019 alleging that Myanmar's treatment of the Rohingya breached the 1948 UN Genocide Convention.

Myanmar had argued that the court had no jurisdiction in this matter. It had demanded that the case be dismissed in preliminary stages. However, Myanmar assertion that Gambia was acting as "proxy" of Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC) was rejected unanimously by the judges.

Only states, and not organisations, are allowed to file cases at the ICJ, which has ruled on disputes between countries since just after World War II.

Judges also unanimously dismissed Myanmar's contention that Gambia was not direct party to the alleged genocide and hence could not file the case.

Finally, they threw out by 15-1 Myanmar's claim that there was no formal dispute at the time Gambia filed the case, and that the court therefore had no jurisdiction.

It could however take years for full hearings and a final judgment in the case.

UN top court says Myanmar genocide case can proceed

A United Nations report published on Monday projected India to surpass China as the most populous nation in the world by next year. The report - The World Population Prospects 2022 by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division – also said that the world population will be reaching eight million by November 2022.

The growth is expected to remain constant as the projections show that world population will reach 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050. The report went on to say that the population of the world will most probably hit its peak in the 2080s at around 10.4 billion before plateauing and staying at the same level till the end of 2100.

“This year's World Population Day (July 11) falls during a milestone year, when we anticipate the birth of the Earth's eight billionth inhabitant. This is an occasion to celebrate our diversity, recognise our common humanity and marvel at advancements in health that have extended lifespan and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality rates,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said according to PTI.

"India is projected to surpass China as the world's most populous country during 2023,” he added.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

China and India remain the two most populous countries in the world while most than half of the total population growth will be concentrated in just eight countries - Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania.

While China is ahead of India when it comes to total population at this point, projections showed that by 2050, the situation can be completely reversed.

India projected to surpass China as world's most populous country in 2023, says UN report

Russia decided to veto a United Nations (UN) Security Council resolution to extend aid to northern Syria without the backing of Damascus. The aid is crucial for roughly 2.4 million people who live in the Idlib region of Syria under rebel control and the permission for aid supply across the Syria-Turkey border at Bab al-Hawa is set to expire on Sunday. While thirteen out of the 15 members voted in favour of the resolution, Russia suggested a six-month extension with the option of adding another six months. China did not express their stance and decided to abstain from the voting on Friday.

While the deadline is almost coming to an end, experts believe that the nations can still find a middle ground. One option for the other countries is to agree with Russia’s proposal but most of them believe that it can create major organisational challenges for NGOs on the front line.

“We need to reach a solution in the immediate term, a solution which renews the mandate for cross-border aid. There is simply no time to waste. The Syrian people are counting on us,” Ireland’s UN representative Geraldine Byrne Nason said after the vote according to CNN.

The US envoy - Linda Thomas-Greenfield – also criticised Russia’s stance in the issue.

“It is unfathomable that one security council member, Russia, put their own political interests above the humanitarian needs of the Syrian people,” she said.

Russia has been an ally to the Syrian government and the decision is being considered to be an attempt to bring the aids under the overview of Damascus.
