Reports from Ukrainian and Spanish media revealed a grim discovery last week - the body of Maxim Kuzminov, a Russian pilot who defected to Ukraine with his helicopter in August of the previous year, was found in an underground garage in Spain. His body bore the markings of multiple bullet wounds.

The Spanish state news agency EFE said that the body was found on February 13th in Villajoyosa, a town near Alicante in southern Spain. Kuzminov had been residing in Spain under a Ukrainian passport using an alias.

A spokesperson for Ukraine's GUR military intelligence confirmed the tragic demise of Kuzminov in Spain, though the precise cause of his death was not specified. The Ukrainian outlet Ukrainska Pravda also reported his death, noting that he had been discovered shot dead. Meanwhile, Spanish authorities, while confirming the discovery of the body of a gunshot victim in Villajoyosa, withheld the victim's identity. A source within Spain's Guardia Civil police force, as cited by Reuters hinted that Kuzminov might have been living under a fabricated identity.

Russia-Ukraine war | Zelenskyy urges US & other allies to support Ukraine

Hours after Kyiv announced it had pulled out troops from Avdiivka, Russia on Saturday (Feb 17) said it had assumed "full control" of the eastern Ukrainian city. Kyiv said it had taken the decision to save the lives of its soldiers.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said President Vladimir Putin had congratulated the military on "such an&nbsp;important victory".&nbsp;

The&nbsp;capture of Avdiivka, which lies in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, represents Russia's biggest victory in the war since May last year and signals that the conflict could drag on.

Former Ukrainian Armed Forces chief&nbsp;General Valery Zaluzhnyi had warned in December last year that&nbsp;Avdiivka would be taken over by the 'enemies' due to their persistence.&nbsp;

"The enemy has the ability to concentrate its forces, including artillery and aviation, in one direction or another. And they can make it so that in two-three months the town [Avdiivka] will have the same fate as Bakhmut,” said&nbsp;Zaluzhnyi at the time.&nbsp;

Ukraine's new military chief and&nbsp;Zaluzhnyi's successor, Oleksandr Syrsky&nbsp;Zaluzhnyi explained the decision to recall his troops.&nbsp;

"I decided to withdraw our units from the city and switch to defence on more favourable lines,” said Syrsky on Facebook.

"Our soldiers performed their military duty with dignity, did everything possible to destroy the best Russian military units and inflicted significant losses on the enemy," he added.

Kremlin has claimed Avdiivka to be part of Russia since a 2022 annexation that remains unrecognised by nearly all United Nations members. In July 2014, the region briefly fell into the hands of pro-Russian separatists before returning to Ukrainian control.

Prior to the war, the city housed around 30,000 inhabitants but since then, most of the houses have been destroyed and fewer than 1,000 residents remain, per local officials.&nbsp;

Ukrainian visa holders who arrived in the UK to escape the ongoing war with Russia will be given an additional 18-month extension&nbsp;to stay in Britain until at least September 2026, announced the Home Office on Sunday (Feb 18).&nbsp;

Since the start of the war nearly two years ago, more than 200,000 Ukrainians have sought sanctuary in the UK. Now, with the first visas issued in March 2022 set to expire next year, the Home Office said the new scheme would provide&nbsp;“certainty and assurance” for Ukrainians in the UK.

“This new visa extension scheme provides certainty and reassurance for Ukrainians in the UK on their future as this war continues, and we will continue to provide a safe haven for those fleeing the conflict,” said migration minister Tom Pursglov, adding that the&nbsp;extension would affect more than 283,000 Ukrainians.&nbsp;

Currently, Britain has two schemes for Ukrainian refugees - one for those having a family in the UK while the other allows Britons to offer accommodation to those fleeing the war.&nbsp;

Apart from extending the visa duration, Britain also said it would supply thousands of drones to Kyiv and urged US lawmakers to vote for a $95 billion security aid package for Ukraine and other allies.

Hungary Prime Minister Victor Orban said on Saturday (Feb 17) that Hungary was "on course" towards ratifying Sweden's NATO bid this month. Hungary remains last holdout before Sweden can join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Orban was delivering state-of-the-nation address when he spoke about the issue.

"The good news is that our current dispute with Sweden is moving towards a conclusion," Orban said in his state-of-the-nation address.

<h2>'Nothing to negotiate'</h2>

Earlier this week, Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom expected hope that Hungary soon ratifies Sweden's accession to NATO. The minister made it clear that there would be no negotiations on the ratifications. Orban has invited Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to "negotiate" Sweden's accession.

"There is nothing to negotiate, if there is a visit, it's not going to be a negotiation, that has been made very clear by my prime minister," said Billstrom earlier in the week.

Hungary supports Sweden in-principle but it has prolonged the ratification process. It has asked Sweden to stop "vilifying" Hungarian government. It is often accused of taking authoritarian turn.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. The West has poured in billions and billions into Ukraine in humanitarian and military help. It was expected that after military help, Ukraine would stage a counteroffensive to win back territory lost to Russia. But this has not happened so far and Russian forces have been able to defend and dig-in.

It was expected that after military help, Ukraine would stage a counteroffensive to win back territory lost to Russia. Ukraine's General Oleksandr Tarnavsky early on Saturday (Feb 17) said that the Ukrainian forces withdrew from the eastern town of Avdiivka, where the situation had considerably deteriorated in the past few days. The step was taken by Ukraine, hours after it signed the French security deal.

"Based on the operational situation around Avdiivka, in order to avoid encirclement and preserve the lives and health of servicemen, I decided to withdraw our units from the city and move to defence on more favourable lines," said Tarnavsky, on Telegram.

"In a situation where the enemy is advancing over the corpses of their own soldiers with a ten-to-one shelling advantage, under constant bombardment, this is the only right decision. Encirclement was prevented, personnel were withdrawn, and our soldiers took up defence at the designated lines,” he added.

Avdiivka, which is a gateway to Donetsk,&nbsp;a city seized by Russia, has been completely destroyed after seeing fierce fighting in recent months.

Since 2014, it became a battlefield town after large swathes of the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions were seized by the Russian-backed fighters.

The fall of Avdiivka marks the most significant change in the front line since Russia seized Bakhmut in May 2023. On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine.

This was also the first major decision taken by Ukraine's new military chief Oleksandr Syrsky after being appointed on February 8. Syrsky said that the troops were withdrawn to preserve the lives of soldiers and stop their encirclement.

"I decided to withdraw our units from the city and switch to defence on more favourable lines,” said Syrsky on Facebook. "Our soldiers performed their military duty with dignity, did everything possible to destroy the best Russian military units and inflicted significant losses on the enemy," he added.
